A fantasy novel I read many years ago. To be honest, it was a pretty poor one, and I doubt I could be bothered to read it again, but it's been bugging me for ages not knowing what it actually was.
The protagonist was a fighter with what was essentially a split personality caused by a trauma in his past. But, being fantasy, this meant he actually had two souls. One was a decent person and highly skilled swordsman, the other was an evil, savage (and even more skilled) berserker.
Other characters included a pacifist wizard, a female general who was a tactical genius (although the author clearly didn't know enough about tactics and strategy to demonstrate this other than by having her win). I think there may have been an "evil" wizard working with the good guys as well (At any rate, I seem to remember the pacifist wizard objecting to some "sorcery" that someone else was using).
The plot involved the return of and fight against some supposedly extinct giants/monsters.
Does anyone recognise it from the description?
