Hey guys. A question just came to me, and since the playground will answer it way faster than I can look it up (that's why I love this forum) I'll ask you guys. Does taking a five foot step provoke an AoO from movement? Thanks, and as always, go nuts this is just a simple question, I don't think one can go nuts upon it.

The whole point of the 5-foot step is that it does NOT provoke an Attack of Opportunity.

Remember that not every move of no more than five feet counts as a five-foot step. In difficult terrain, you can't take a five-foot step, because even a move by which you travel no more than five feet counts as 10 feet or more. Therefore, moving no more than five feet in difficult terrain out of a threatened space provokes attacks of opportunity.

You can read about this here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm#move5FeetthroughDifficultTerra in) and here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/movementPositionAndDistance.htm#terrainandObstacle s). You can read more about the kinds of terrain that qualify as difficult in the SRD document Surroundings, Weather, & Environment (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/wildernessWeatherEnvironment.htm).

The only way I know of that a 5' step (an actual 5' step, not the other 5' movements that Duke of Urrel referred to) provokes an AoO is if your opponent has the Thicket of Blades stance (Tome of Battle, page 61). (That stance also makes Withdraw actions provoke.)
