Awakened Psionic Cactus (Savage Species)

So I was reading Savage Species over the weekend, and I noticed it mentioned using Awakened Plants and animals as PCs. So I devised the goofiest, adorable PC ever. My friend suggested using Psionics, as those don't require somatic components. Imagine a small, potted cactus, being born on a litter by a team of mind-controlled squirrels. Can you imagine anything more intimidating?
This thread is just to get some suggestions for class + feats to take.

Thrallherd is the most natural fit. All of the squirrels now belong to you. Some are above level 1, for good measure.

If you want something already established, Dragon Magazine 352 presented the Cactacae race from China Mieville's Bas-Lag setting. They have some great lore, specialized weapons, and other fun features.

You don't need to play an awakened plant.
Polymorph any object(cactus->human)
True mind switch
Turn back into a cactus
