Is Enervate or like effects the only way for an enemy to cause players to lose prepared spells?

As a DM, I designed a creature that made players lose 2d4 spell levels of prepared spells on a failed save, and I was wondering if there was precedent.

Level loss is one option. Penalizing/damaging/draining the casting stat is another.

Yeah, I've used those before, but thanks for the reply.

I've been trying to try some new stuff without being too complex and use existing rules when possible.

You can also use the Spellthief's Steal Spells ability on them.

There is the Epic Spell, Spell Worm. It does pretty much what you are looking for.

If its a temp effect (like after a day the spell levels are back/restoration) then I could see it being non-Epic. Would make for a nice scary monster to throw against casters

There's also the Arcane Ooze (MM3) - DC 25 Fortitude save or lose a random spell of the highest level every round if within 60ft. CR 9, if it's relevant.

That's actually very similar to my home brew.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to check them out once I'm not half asleep.

There's also the 2nd level spell Arcane Turmoil from Complete Mage, which removes one spell of the highest level with a Will save in addition to acting as a targeted dispel.

I recall there's a whip that drains spell levels.

Do you recall the name or source for that weapon?
