View Full Version : [Edge of the Empire] Upon the Knife's Edge

I Am Clockwork

It is evening in Bon Kroma Spaceport. You all have been on the planet Kyrsis for a week now, laying low the dusty mining settlement of Bon Kroma. You each have your reasons for being here: a place to hide, a place to find work, a rest-stop for your next great adventure. No matter your reason's it's time to move on, and you may just have found it.

Yyrgess Flink, a man known for shady business requiring shadier characters to complete them. This job is better than many you've seen. The credits are good and the task isn't as unsavory as most. Take a ship to the Hurndora system, nab a stolen shipment of hyperdrive parts, and bring it to Flink's fence on Nar Shaddaa. Flink told you to meet his representative in hanger 2-D, where your ship, the Knife's Edge will be waiting for you.

The dingy hanger is a fitting setting for the ship, an old YT-1300 Light Freighter that looks like it's spent more times in a scrap yard than out of it. In front of the ship sits the familiar shape of a GONK droid, a large antenna welded to its chassis. The droid powers up, slowly grinding to life as you approach. Rather than making the "GONK" sound that made this model of power droid famous, the tinny voice of Yyrgess Flink echoes around the hanger.

"{{Glad you could make it. This little droid is ICU-2, my own little high-powered com-unit. He'll bounce a signal off the ship's communications system so I can keep in contact. And this, this is the Knife's Edge. What do you think of the ship? She's a beauty, isn't she? If you all are ready, I'll let you get on-board, familiarize yourself with the layout... pick out bunk space... the important stuff. Come on, come on, don't be shy.}}"

Welcome, welcome! This is the time for you guys to introduce your characters and sus out what ship positions you want, etc.

NOVA-32 walks about the front end of the YT-1300, sensor array scanning the ship up and down. Satisfied after a few seconds of observation NOVA-32's voice unit chimes in the sound coming out slow, grating as if the sound itself was laden heavy with rust.

"Beauty? Flink, you know I'm the first to appreciate antiques," NOVA-32 knocks the side of his head for effect. "but come on, this thing has more holes in it than I do."

A metallic chuckle rattles out from 32's voice unit.

"No, no it'll do great I'm sure. Ship got a maintenance bay? Something tells me I'm going to be spending a lot of time in there..."

32 trails off, his sensors scanning the others next to him.

"Ah, right where are my manners. NOVA-32, rust-bucket extraordinaire! Anyone care to mention why they're here? Truth be told I have little clue myself, targets have been slow this far out recently and Flink...uh Flink offered me some work to make up the downtime."

Dardo's big dark gloomy eyes wanders from person to person before he turns towards the GONK droid.

"Looks like a diverse crew you manage to gather Flink. But how are the computer systems in that letter opener?, I figure it might need a few patches and updates. I'll guess I can get around to that once we get settled."

"I'm Dardo. Me and mr. Flink has gome to an agreement where I will assist him on a few jobs and he pays me, not much more to say about that realy."

The Rodian adjust the straps on his fully packed backpack and starts moving towards the loading ramp.

"A Corelian freighter? You mock me." The female Selonian snarled at the "communications" droid. "I'd lay even odds this craft was built over my homeworld." She growled, her voice trailing off. "If it wernt for the money..."

Turning to the others, she nodded curtly. "I am called Talara, and I'm the closest thing your fearless leader could find to a medic. ust so you know, I never payed attention to human biology, so it will probably be to your best interests to seek care elsewhere."

Dau looked over the rest of the group, most of them were much better equiped than he was and the first thought that crossed his mind that perhaps he should have cut a better deal with Flink. The next thought was that the Selonian sure could use an attitude adjustment, mind you he wasn't exactly the first person on the list of people who play nicely with others either. Nonetheless, it would be better to let the girl know that he wouldn't stick his neck out for a hostile medic if they didn't even do their job."Well, that's a rather friendly introduction, isn't it? Makes me feel warm and tingly inside, you know like we're a big happy family."

Dau turned to look specifically at Talara, "That being said, I sure hope you don't expect me to put my life on the line if I'm not going to get at least a shot of anesthetic. So, I hope we can come to a proper professional relationship, you know the kind where I protect you in a firefight and if I get hurt you'll not slip me a little bit of neurotoxin or something? How's that sound?" Dau grinned and turned back to the rest of the party, "Excuse my manners, my name is Dau Sessa, and Flink was kind enough to offer me a position on the ship to do some good works around the galaxy, helping the poor and downtrodden, freeing the oppressed...or you know commit some crimes for some good money?" Dau shook his head, chuckling to himself, wondering if there was another reason Flink would hire them other than to make credits doing his dirty work. He followed Dardo towards the ramp to get settled in, sounds like they were going to be a good old fashioned dysfunctional gang of criminals.

NOVA-32 glances at the little exchange haphazardly, considering that he'd frown were he capable but leaving it at merely narrowing the shutters on his sensor array. His eyes trailing after the individuals headed for the docking ramp 32 moves his arms in imitation of a shrug before following suit.

"Well then, I imagine we can continue our introductions when we're all aboard...doubt there will be any room left if we wait for pleasantries."

Ducking into the docking ramp NOVA-32 immediately begins looking for the ship's machine bay.

Dardo shakes his head and lets out a disappointing sigh, "Well that started earlier than expected."

He notices the human coming after him and slows down to let him catch up. Once Dau is by his side he reaches out his long hands and gives him a friendly smile, hoping to make friends rather than enemies the first day on this job.
"I 've heard that Selonians are very fast learners so i think you'll be alright" Dardo says, hoping the fury lady hears him,. he meant it more as a compliment towards Talara than to reasure Dau.

I apologize for any spelling errors and such. Enlish is not my first language.

From around one of the rear landing struts, a tall lanky Duros comes into sight. Quietly speaking, he appears to be inputting into his datapad. Looking up again in the well, he shakes his head and muttering, taps a few more times on the pad. He begins ambling towards the front of the ship suddenly stopping at the sight of the communications droid. Shaking his head, he makes a sharp right towards the ramp.

Talara turns to Dau and completely loses it for a full minute. The gist of her tirade seems to be that she really does have very little medical training, but that it is more than the rest of you have. Also, something about her Sept sending her off to the edge of the galaxy to keep imperial inspectors looking the wrong way.

Dau was about to turn to Dardo and shake his hand, but was struck speechless. As it turned out the Selonian had a much sharper tongue than he himself possessed. Resembling a fish out of water he opened and closed his mouth several times before realizing he had nothing to say. Finally mustering up his composure he managed to speak,"I'm...sorry?" He glanced around at the others in the crew, rubbing the back of his neck, "I think we got off on the wrong foot. Uh...I'm sorry, I hope that my sticking my foot in my mouth won't cause too many hard feelings. I...uh...right, I'll just shut up now."

Dau turned to Dardo, "Looks like I'm going to be the one learning fast around here." He shook Dardo's hand quickly and gave him a sheepish smile, "So what's your specialty Dardo? Looks like you've got a lot of equipment."

I have to say that I think this party is going to have some awesome issues, and the Scathing Tirade is made even better by your profile pic, Rakaydos.

NOVA-32 falls in next to the Human and the Rodian, looking the two up and down before speaking hushing the volume on his voice unit.

"Selonian's a little thin-skinned hm? Hope that doesn't become an issue later. Anyways, proper introduction seems to be in order. NOVA-32, Bounty Hunter. Care to mention any relevant skills?"

The Duros comes to the ramp and begins to ascend before realizing his way is blocked by others. Startled, he tilts his head to and fro looking for a way around this obstacle. "Uh, excuse me..."

Dardo retract his hand and try too avoid eye contact with Talara as se walks past and into the ship. then turns his eyes back at Dau and NOVA-32.
Yes, well...my speciality is dealing with anything digital. Let's just say I speak binary code better than i speak Galactic Basic....So if you and need to get a hold of any vital information and have "forgotten" the password to "your" datapad, you call me.
How about you guys?

Dardo steps aside to make room for the seemingly confused Duros making its way towards them.

As you begin your exploration of the Knifes edge you find it's insides are not that much different from the outsides. Bits of wiring poke out of odd corners and the many of the walls are marred by scorched holes that look suspiciously like blaster scars. Despite these cosmetic deficiencies, the ship seems to be in working order. Engines, shields and weapons all seem to at least be powered.

The ship is bare, almost everything that wasn't nailed down seems to have been striped. The engine room is in working order, but there are suspicious blue stains on the walls, floor and ceiling. The cargo bay is sadly empty (something you hope to change in the coming days), though there seems to be a small workstation with tools in the corner. The two small crew quarters consist of three uncomfortable looking bunks each and a small storage locker per bunk. there is a "common area, near the center of the ship which has some chairs and a table bolted to the floor. There are three smaller rooms which do not currently have any function and can be converted to whatever the crew needs.

In the cockpit rests the only piece of adornment you have seen on the ship: A large, filigreed knife rests on a plaque above the cockpit door, the plaque says "We are all pilgrims of the future. Though dire perils rest to either side, we remain balanced on the knifes edge."

As you explore the ship, Flink's voice emanates from the gonk droid once more.
"{{Do remember to check the nooks and crannies. These old haulers are notorious for having little hidey-holes in the most unexpected places.}}"

As they walk up the ramp into the ship, Dardo gets out his Datapad, a few cables and another, smaler looking datapad. He connects the databreaker to his datapad. The screen lights up his face with a green tint as he initiate a search through records and databases for any information about his new crewmates. He then puts his gear back in his backpack while it does the work.

(Thats a computer check for the information slicing. 1 ability and 2 prof dice. Do you prefer to do this rolls for us Clockwork?) maybe I should have posted this in The ooc thread :P

NOVA-32 walks up behind Dardo, tapping the Rodian lightly on the shoulder once he's sure everyone else is gone.

"Heard you mention data acquisition and recovery. I'd like to take you up on your more than generous offer back there on the ramp," 32 lowers the volume of his voice unit drastically. "Pull up the records on that Selonian, mentioned something about the Empire in it's little spat. Fun to know what that entails don't you agree?"

The Duros abruptly stops at the sight of the exposed wiring and blaster marks. "Oh, what happened to you?" Making a quick inspection, he begins entering more information into his datapad all the while muttering, "Stripped. Stripped. Burnt and stripped. That has to be fixed now."

Moving to the cockpit, he moves to the controls and punches in the command to close all of the hatches and ramp. He watches the board and nods when all the seals come up green. Rising to leave, he finally seems to actually notice some of the others. "The ship's seals are intact. I am going to check the engine room. Do not touch anything. Bad engines make big explosions." He instructs before making his way aft to the engine compartment.

Dau watches the others move around the ship, feeling rather out of place. "Well, if anyone needs any help I'm good with weapons? I guess I'm like the resident combat expert. A poorly equipped one, mind you. Blaster rifles are actually pretty expensive when the local authorities think that you might be up to no good." Realizing that most everyone was rather busy Dau decided to take a look around the ship and see if there was anything resembling an armory on board, perhaps with at the very least some spare energy packs for the blasters. Perhaps he might even stumble on one of those secret compartments that Flink wanted them to find. Maybe there was even some highly illegal good stashed somewhere Flink hadn't looked. He shook his head, that was rather unlikely, Flink had probably found the ship at some junkyard, possibly even 'found' it floating in space without enough crew to defend it properly.

Dau stopped to peer at some of the blaster marks on the walls. His knowledge of ships was highly limited, but he was fairly certain that holes in the ship walls were probably not a sign of good condition. He poked at some of the wires cautiously it seemed like the Duros knew what he was doing, but he couldn't help but wonder who was going to pilot the ship. Hopefully not the Selonian, she seemed a bit too high strung to be a pilot. He chuckled to himself and decided to check out the cockpit and see if he could find out a bit more about at least one of the other crew members.

“eh..well, I don’t think it’s a good idea to draw any attention from the Empire at the moment. Maybe we should just get this job going. But I’ll see what I can do once we are settled. “Dardo replies trying not to reveal that he already has thought of that, but probably with other intentions than the killer bot. With a more than average hatred towards the empire, Daardo is more interested in finding out if there is something he can do to help the situation, if there even is one.

Dardo then turns around to walk away from NOVA-32 . Looking for one of available rooms that Flink mentioned to set up a small computer lab, preferably close to ether the engine room or the cockpit.

3 Successes, 3 Threat You manage to uncover some info a few of your crew members, however your slicing was a bit sloppy. however, you have left obvious evidence that you were snooping in their records. Anyone who checks will get 3 boost dice to notice your snooping, if they bother to check, that is.
Here's what you find out:

NOVA-32 is on record with several successful bounties for a variety of crime syndicates. He also has acquired significant gambling debts which are owed to one of Flink's Casino rackets.
Dau Sessa has a long history working as a gun for hire, selling his soldiering skills to various crime bosses and ner-do-wells. He definitely has an official file in the Imperial criminal database, but you can't find what he is wanted for.
Talara was once a Selonian diplomat, before being exiled for "Crime's against the Empire." She has a fairly substantial bounty on her head.

As the crew familiarizes themselves with the Knife's Edge, the ICU-2 shuffles around from room to room before finally wattling into the Common Area, it's voice box crackling to life as Flink calls out to the group,

"{{Gather round, gather round! It's Time I tell you about the exciting little job I have planned for you!}}"

Flink waits for the group to gather before continuing,

"{{We all here? Good! Now, I have recently... acquired a shipment of Hyperdrive parts which I intended for a contact on Nar Shaddaa, but the shipment went missing several days ago in the Hurndora System. The ship containing the cargo was to dock with the local mining station, drop off the parts, which were then going to be taken by a separate courier to Nar Shaddaa. However, the courier never left the station, and the station itself has dropped out of contact. I want you to get in there, locate my shipment and get it to Nar Shaddaa. And Don't take to long about it. We might be on the rim, but something like an entire mining colony going dark is likely to draw Imperial attention. Any questions?}}"

As far as dice are concerned, I will roll them, so we don't waste time making you wait for me to tell you the number of difficulty dice you need to roll. Just tell me what skill/ability you think is applicable (as well as any bonuses) and what you will want to spend Advantage and Triumph on if they are rolled. Feel free to ask me how difficult a task might be in the OOC forums, if you are hesitant to try something out. If you do end up rolling dice please roll them in the OOC thread, thanks.

Growling at the GONK droid, Talara issued her own complaint. "You didnt mention having to provide my own bacta patches- this ship isnt equipped for triage, let alone actual care."

NOVA-32 stifles a laugh at the Selonian's frustration, the metallic sound reverberating off the ship interior.

"You've got a blaster right? When in doubt cauterize, Flink promised a functional ship fully stocked shouldn't be an expectation. Take it from one who's worked with him before."

32 turns his attention to the GONK droid, his demeanour now far more serious.

"Remember our deal Flink, I'll hold up my end I hope that you'll hold up yours. Now if you'll excuse me I've got some files to look up."

NOVA-32 leaves the crew with Flink's GONK droid, moving for the ship computers in order to look up Imperial Bounty listings on both his crewmates and any potential targets in and around the Hurndora System.

NOVA-32 has an Imperial Peace-Keeping Certificate, alongside his unofficial criminal bounties. If the bounties are listed by the Empire there should be no issue with his surveying them.

The Duros reluctantly leaves off his inspection of the engine room to join the others in the commons. At Flink's explanation of the job at hand, the Duros sagely nods. When asked for questions, he queries, How light can the shipment get? I can probably jury-rig this heap to get us to the Hurndora System, but this ship has been completely stripped. I can't con the hyperdrive into many more jumps than that."

I guess I could assist you in the engine room if needed. the blue Rodian nods at the Duros.
I don’t think I got your name. care to share?

I will run link up the ships computer systems to my lab so I can run updates from there.

Dardo will se what I can do to get det ships data link upgraded and on a more secure line so they can operate without the fear of survailance by third parties. And also record any ingoing and outgoing communications.
But first I got to scan the ship for any “intruders”
Dardo gets out his scanner and datapad and takes a tour around the ship and scans for a variety of “surveillance units”
He sees that the results from his database search on his fellow crew mates has come in and shrugs his face when he sees all the traces he left in the system. "It’s gonna take forever to remove these traces. I better rewrite that automated slice-script for information gathering. Should have done it myself when I got settled in. Luckely I got a bit more to work on when getting to know his new crew."Dardo thinks to himself.

The Duros turns to the azure Rodian. "I am Win. The ship will run... for now. Our pilot needs to know and understand the limitations. This is not a Corellian racing swoop."

Upon hearing Flink's reply, he heads back to the engine room to pick up where he left off in his inspection and inventory.

As everyone finished listening to Flink, Dau paused, wondering what it was Flink was sending them into. He thought for a moment then asked "Whats the chance that we are stepping into, either, a horror story with zombies and or various brain eating creatures or a highly infectious fatal disease here? Or are there any reports of pirates in the area that have that kind of manpower? Or maybe even rebel operations in the area? I'd kind of like to know what we might possibly be facing before we walk into a disappeared mining colony."

Dau crossed his arms and leaned back against the wall of the ship, he was curious as to what could possibly going on and if perhaps they were simply an expendable scouting team to Flink. After all, what had he given them? A particularly run down ship, probably straight from the junkyard, a few credits here and there for some gear and a heavy debt that they might owe him for awhile yet, depending on how this mission went. Maybe they were walking into something a bit bigger than their small ragtag group could handle.
