Seems reasonable. Okay, we'll enchant an officer.

I picked out a prisoner and had Coral stare deep into his eyes.

"You want to bring me the object I am about to show you", then I handed him a drawing of the amulet.

"I want to bring you the object you are about to show me", he repeated mechanically. Then he smiled and handed the sketch back. "Job done!"

Smartarse. It took a few tries but eventually we got him steered back through the portal and he returned a few weeks later with my belongings.

It took a few weeks, but the spell was duly cast. The amulet flared brightly in my hands as the holes between the worlds snapped shut, trapping the remains of the enemy army on our side of the rift.

The time I had spent living off the land had given me some insight as to Daria's own natural needs. I handpicked several of the prisoners who were hunters or foresters in better times and offered them the chance to earn their freedom on a variety of projects to improve our ecology. Most accepted, and their strong work ethic greatly helped Daria.

Enchantment : +10

Now all that remained was to solve the problem of the now-surrendered army.

* I had the prisoners executed.

All right, we have two votes for Duchy so that's what we'll do.

An interesting real-world analog is the Duchy of Normandy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Normandy), which was ceded to Vikings by France in order to give them a reason to defend against northern raids rather than leading them. How well that worked ... is worth reading the article! :)

I met with the leader of the soldiers, pointed to the deserted northern areas, mentioning how useful it would be to have a settled country which could act as a buffer against northern invaders. It wasn't an offer I had to repeat, although a certain amount of dickering went on.

The only really tricky part came after the signing when it was necessary for the new duke to swear allegiance to the King and then take up his ducal residence. The ritual required kissing the king's foot. The proud soldier found this repulsive, but eventually acquiesed this far -- he jerked the king's foot up to his mouth, carefully pecked it, and then let it drop. This possibly foreshadowed bad times for the future, but for the present the soldiers went to their new homes, set up farms, and began producing taxes for the kingdom. They also fulfilled their commitment to repel the barbarians. Perhaps not a permanent solution, but at least it would work in my lifetime.

Warcraft: +10
Diplomacy: +10

Warcraft and diplomacy are now MAX.

On to the next problem. King Travis, being a weak and vacillating king, had been bullied by the nobles and had signed away most of his powers. He was now almost a figurehead, while the nobles were becoming ever more exploitative with the free hand they were dealt. The people were beginning to grumble against the greed of the nobles, and revolutionary conditions seemed quite possible.

Vote 216

* The citizens demanded that power be returned to their king [100 kingdom faction]
* I tricked the nobles into returning power to King Travis [90 illusion]
* I found reasons for each noble to return power to King Travis [90 divination]
* I made the nobles return power to king Travis [90 enchantment]
* I killed all of the nobles and replaced them with people who would serve me better.
* I did nothing.

All right, we'll lead a citizen's revolt.

I made contact with some of the leading citizens through the church of Blamorb, and within short order we had hundreds of thousands of people in 'Occupy Daria' protests underway. Since the soldiers were not ordered to restrain the populace -- and in fact sympathized with it anyway -- we were able to reverse many of the concessions. Order was restored. He would eventually become known as King Travis the Kind, one of the greatest kings to ever rule Daria -- with help, of course.

Vote 218:

FINAL KINGDOM IMPROVEMENT

Tax System: Tolerable
Agriculture and Farming: Good
Kingdom Defense: Good
Foreign Relations: Excellent
Kingdom Faith: Excellent
Culture and Education: Excellent
Infrastructure: Excellent
Ecology: Excellent

Options:
* Hire an advisor [5000 gold; we have 6760]
* Improve Agriculture and Farming [80]
* Improve Kingdom Defense [100]
* I took some time off for myself, doing nothing to improve the kingdom.

We do not have the option to improve taxation because our skill is too low to raise it above it's "tolerable" level. To do this, we can hire an advisor ONE time, to raise it to "good". This will bring us to the minimum kingdom requirements to attempt a golden age.

Note that we can hire an advisor AND take one other action. Because of this, I recommend we spend 5000 to hire a tax advisor then improve either agriculture OR defense.

Very well, my lords and ladies, so random.org must break the tie.

defense: 21
agriculture: 74

We will hire a tax advisor and improve our agriculture.

Agriculture is now excellent, Tax is now good.

We brought in an advisor to improve the tax system so that it became more than merely tolerable. I shared my knowledge of agriculture across all Daria, showing them how to rotate the crops, use fertilizer, market their yield, and harvest more efficiently.

Kingdom: +10

I remember my 80th birthday well; I was very introspective. Prince Kyle was 14 and old enough to begin tutelage under the royal court wizard, but that would not be me. I had grown weary of this world and had already in mind a small pocket dimension to inhabit, with my husband, where we would neither grow old nor die, but before that, there was something else I had to do.

Usher in a Golden Age for Daria, if I could.

I used the surplus food to make sure nobody went hungry.

Trustworthy foreign relations would ensure my motions were carried into every corner of the world.

Daria's strong faith made everyone more at peace with themselves and others.

Our enhanced culture gave everyone a sense of national pride.

The solid infrastructure allowed even the most remote area of Daria to be easily accessible, making everyone feel that they belonged.

Our great ecology gave us pletny of metal and lots of lumber to build with.

I had some options before I could usher in a true Golden Age

Vote 219:

* I used my credentials from the Academy to help my cause [+1]
* I crafted the Sword of Kings [100 transmutation : +1]
* I crafted potions of Enhanced Happiness [100 Alchemy: +1]
* I summoned hordes of demons [or other extraplanar beings] to work for the kingdom [100 summoning: +1]
* I rehabilitated alcoholics, drug addicts, and criminals [100 enchantment: +1]
* I stopped accidents before they occurred [100 divination: +1]
* I stopped plagues and cured the common cold [100 healing: +1]
* I made sure the thieves guild had not started up again [+1 [?]]
* As Archmage, I called upon the Mage Guild to give council during the Council of Peace [+1]

The land was the safest it had been in generations because my party and I had killed Parnaxxus. It made everyone feel safer knowing that if another threat such as the mighty dragon came, there were those who could stop it.

I used my credentials to burnish my case. The people of Daria felt better following a gradually academy. They continually assumed I knew something they didn't, making them feel better about following me. Happily, in many cases I DID know more than they did.

Peace Power: +1 [9]

I crafted a wondrous sword, of which many tales would later be told. I presented it to King Travis as a symbol of the justice by which his reign would be known.

I prayed to Blamorb, and opened a gateway to his realm. It turned out there were a number of beings who wanted to explore the prime material world, and we could find things for them to do, such as turning water wheels, acting as sentries, and so on.

I opened clinics which would use the very best enchantment and alchemy skills to assist those who wished to be freed from addictions and all manner of problems. The courts often gave the choice of treatment or more traditional punishment, so not all of my volunteers were as willing as I could wish, but in the end it enabled people to live healthier, better lives free of the things that had enslaved them.

Peace Power: +1 [13]

I found missing children and kept people away from danger before danger arrived.

Peace Power: +1 [14]

I devoted myself to healing skills, and was able to save thousands of lives from plagues as well as make hundreds of thousands far less miserable by curing things such as fibro or the common cold.

Peace Power: +1 [15]

I called on the wizards to give counsel, which they were happy to do , improving all of these issues as well as many others.

I had definitely impressed the leaders of the other nations. I started gathering the nations' leaders for the council.

I sent a messenger to the queen, warning of potential danger on the road. She took heed, and the elves came with a large honor guard, singing. It was as if spring had come early.

I next sent a messenger to Foli, Low King of the Mountain.

* Used dragonwish
* The dwarves respected my warning of danger and sent the dwarf king with a large honor guard [100 dwarf]
* I didn't send him a personal escort.

I'm going to just go with option 2: They respected our warnings. Why spend the dragonwish when we can get the same result for free? And have we really put in all this effort to NOT send a personal escort, see him get killed, and all our effort go to waste?

King Foli also respected my concerns of potential ambush by assassins, and so he came to the city with five hundred dwarves , all clothed in chain mail of finest make and wielding large mattocks.

* I didn't send a personal escort.
*The orcs respected my warnings of danger and sent the Orc Chieftain with a large honor guard [100 orc faction

I'm going to go directly with Harrop. There's no sense in using the dragon wish when there's something else to use, and there's no way we're going to select the auto-fail option.

Harrop went as my personal ambassador. Through his cunning and shrewdness, and the help of Blamorb, Khorong came successfully to the council. Everyone was surprised when he and his retinue showed up, not in scruffy clothes and rags, but with beautifully crafted weapons and impressive black armor, their star as a banner. "I'm making a better world for all goblinoids", the Chief said. "We can start by looking the part."

All right, let's go fetch the barbarian king.

My dragonish partner conveyed me to the barbarian realm. It made quite an impression. I had to come myself because, although Throm, the barbarian king, had reason to remember me with fondness, I could not expect him to simply leave his capital at the beck and call of a woman, especially since he had been my prisoner not so very long ago.

Even though I arrived on dragonback, he was still reluctant to come to the peace conference. The barbarians were not a peaceful people, and to attempt to bring them into the golden age might well mean both the end of his reign and his life.

Diplomacy it is.

I spoke calmly with Throm. I took him on a virtual tour of our capital -- of the freedom from disease, of the working outsiders, of the accidents that did not happen.

I pointed out that all the other nations would soon experience these benefits as well ... and the barbarians could have a part of this, to have a life better than any known by men since the downfall of Atlantis -- or they could be the beggar at the feast, the lone outlaw whom the hands of all the other nations would be turned against.

There was no honor or glory in such a war. Only death.

It took some doing, but Throm at last acquiesced, and returned with me to the capital on dragonback.

Finally, it was the turn of the Emperor of Jilal. He acquiesed almost immediately, and I had the duty to bring him to Tornassa personally.

I flew south on Cephelopada, watching as the green countryside turned to yellow desert sand. The leagues flew by until I reached Jilal.

The Emperor was a powerful man. He mounetd a mighty steed and gathered his guards around him. He knew all the tricks of the desert, and with his airborne draconic escort had no problems crossing. We arrived in Tornassa safely.

This was the first time in history that all the leaders of all the Kingdoms -- Islandi, Foli, Khorong, Throm, Emperor Shaddam, King Travis, Queen Gretchen and Prince Kyle. After a day or so refreshment, we adjourned to the conference room to conduct our business.

I stepped outside for a break and heard a commotion. I had little time to react when a band of assassins burst onto the scene -- professional of a very high caliber. I saw at least a dozen soldiers, a mage, and a cleric of darkness. Seemingly someone else had seen the possibilities of the meeting, and had arranged for it to be a Red Wedding (http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Red_Wedding), rendering the entire world leaderless in a single day.

I had little time to act. They were all wearing masks, and threw a bottle at my feet. It shattered. A nasty mist arose from it. Gas!

THE END

EPILOG

And that's my life story. Even though I eventually became the Archmage, my beginnings wer humble. I came from a terrible home with cruel parents. I fell in love with Goldie, she was my first love. Ilse was my first real friend, and it meant a lot to me. Harrop Otter, a mage I met at the academy, also became a close friend.

I started life as a simpel scribe. I think it was the elf attack on my village that drove me to do greater things. I became a wizard, after graduation from Marlin and Dory's school of Ichthurgy. I ended up riding Cephelopada, my draconic partner, who is sill alive thanks to my magic.

I joined up with a golem I created named Mr. Pump, my friend from the academy, Harrop Otter, and my childhood friend, a gnome named Ilse. We worked tirelessly out of the Full Cup Inn, providing our services for money. Our career culminated with the slaying of the Great Dragon Parnaxxus, which signaled the end of our adventuring days.

I eventually married Mack Erles, whom I met at the academy, and had a wonderful child named Finn who grew up to become a royal wizard. He got married and had Matt, our grandson. It was interesting working for King Travis, whom I put onto the throne myself. Together , we ushered in a new Golden Age, an act that would live on in history for all time.

I think back to the many choice I made in my life, and I wonder how things would have turned out had I chosend differently. Perhaps in another dimension or on another plane, another wizard is thinking the same thoughts as me.
