As present in this OOTS comic www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0871.html

Is there such a spell? If not what level do you think would be appropriate for self research?

Cloak of shade (Sand, 112) seems to do this pretty well. It reduces heat category by one, it protects the target from sunburns, and it has a single target and a long duration.

If it exists, it sits in Libris Mortis. That book deals with a lot of ways around sun, in feats and alchemical items. If there's a spell, it would be there.

To my knowledge, the spell does not exist in any book. If what you're looking for is a way to make a vampire less Sun-vulnerable, then there are a few ways I do know of though.

1) becoming a vampire by over-ennervating as a Shadow Sun Ninja. This will make you straight up immune to the sun, but costs you your soul. Or if you're a vampire, it means that your soul is insufficiently dead, and you need to go make a deal with Dispater to have it properly inhumed. Also, specifies that you become an NPC when the soul is lost.

2) the Vampire Lord template found here http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20021018a. This will leave you taking penalties, but noticeably more still-undead. Again, great for NPCs, requires a bit of questing, and at least a hundred years time, for a PC, assuming your DM even let you.

3) This feat http://dndtools.eu/feats/libris-mortis-the-book-of-the-dead--71/endure-sunlight--864/ from Libris Mortis. This is by far the easiest and most PC-friendly method, although still highly limited.

Since you asked for the spell level though, I'd say somewhere around fourth level or so. Death Ward is at that level, and it seems appropriate. Longer duration for fewer effects covered, Abjuration school, ought to be a standard action to cast, for sunlight and dispel emergencies.

I don't know of any spell in 3.5 that does this for sure, but Pathfinder has Protective Penumbra (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/p/protective-penumbra). It explicitly protects vampires from sunlight, for 10 minutes/level as a 2nd level spell.
