So... if next is coming up, and they do a modification of the rules in 3 years, will that make it next.5?

I'm more concerned with what happens 5+ years after Next comes out.
What do they call it then?
Do they go back to numbers?
After-Next?
Later?
Prior-to-Penultimate?
Next-Next?

They call it "NEXT! I said NEXT!"

And then the next one is "Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?"

Slipperychicken

Every edition will be "NEXT", since logically speaking, each one they produce is the next edition of D&D.

Since "next" is next relative to 4e, maybe they can revamp 3rd edition (again) and call it "D&D PREVIOUS".

Well, let's see how they've handled it previously. Let's ignore Basic for this purpose.

Dungeons & Dragons
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2E
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2E Player's Options
Dungeons & Dragons 3E
Dungeons & Dragons 3.5
Dungeons & Dragons 4E
Dungeons & Dragons Essentials
Dungeons & Dragons Next

As you can clearly see, there's no strict pattern to the revisions, beyond some of the Essentials line having Player's Option in their title. Who knows what they'll do for the revision of Next, if they do one at all; remember, it's ~MODULAR~. Maybe Advanced D&D Next.

In the most recent livestream the R&D team were referring to it as 5th edition. Which included Mike Mearls and Greg Bisland, both of whom would have corrected the others if that wasn't the name they were planning to publish it under at this point. So I suspect this whole discussion is sadly moot.

After D&D Next, they will release D&D Text. An all text-based game played online on your computer, to try to appeal to old school MUD players.

After that, in an ill-fated attempt to appear "hip" and "edgy" to appeal to younger gamers, they'll release D&D Sext. It...goes poorly.

To: All members of D&D Next DevTeam
From: Robert York, Head of Department Zero
RE: Special Announcement

Well, the cat's out of the bag, it seems that Lester got hit by a bus and discovered that he cannot die. We were going to save the announcement for the annual Pizza Lula and Employee Appreciation day this Friday, but seems the secret is out, so lets make it official!

Accounting has been crunching the numbers and discovered that a great deal of cost is eaten up with retirement, illnesses, and paying out life insurance policies when our employees commit suicide in a way that makes it look like they were assassinated. (We shall refer you to the Jan 10th memo requesting employees stop shooting themselves in the back of the head with long ranger sniper rifles.) Originally, we thought it would be cheaper to kill everyone, but when you add in the cost of training your replacements, it's just not cost effective. So, we contacted the dark oracle that was keeping **** van Dike alive and found out he was currently between jobs, so we hired him to take your souls and hearts out of your bodies and place them in containers where we could keep them safe.

Congratulations! Nobody in the D&D Next DevTeam can die! The savings to the company should be staggering, because it is only a few pennies a day to keep the cooler running where we store your still beating hearts. Much cheaper then retraining, let me assure you, and should also help dramatically to cut health care costs. Omabacare be damned, we take care of our own.

Which reminds me, Jenkins, that thumping sound of a hundred beating hearts and the wails of the damned that keeps wafting up from the ventilation? You were right all along, so you can stop going to therapy. Also it will only last until Friday when maintenance will close off that vent completely. I know you've been complaining that the air blows on you directly, so it's a Win-Win for everyone!

Please note, this is a pilot program and the rest of the company is unaware of your new condition. Let’s not brag about it to anyone else, shall we? If this works out, we'll look into expanding the program to include all key personnel.

Oh, one other thing. You may, from time to time, find yourself craving human flesh. HR is aware of this and has prepared for the occasional attack of the "munchies". The rotating refrigerated snack kiosk has had packets of human flesh added to it under the snack name, "Red Rum Cake". And is available of 5.95 each. We know this is a little expensive, but it's only because the cost of raw human flesh is rather high and we need to recoup our costs. Also, it will discourage the other departments from buying it, which I'm sure is something nobody wants.

Any rate, Congratulations and hope to see you all at the Pizza Lula and Employee Appreciation Day Extravaganza!

Have a nice day and thank you for working for Wizards of the Coast!

Jesus, I'd like to see that just to quench my curiosity of what would happen.

You can only download sourcebooks through iTunes (it wipes all other PDFs off your computer periodically), it automatically collects data on your gaming patterns, then immediately sends the data to the NSA before using it as blackmail to make you buy the Premium edition.

Also, it voids your warranty if you use any unapproved houserules, 3rd party books, or homebrew material (a practice known as "Jailbreaking" your campaign).
