So what do you think is going to happen when OOTS reaches 1000 comics? Major plot twist? Splash page? Lampshading the fact that nothing significant happened? Nothing at all?

I think hes going to skip 1000 and go right on to 1001

On the one hand, Rich has been ignoring numeric milestones for about, what, 350 strips now?

On the other hand, 1000 is a really big milestone. I am actually kind of expecting a nod of some sort.

He hasn't bothered with the round numbers in a long time. If there's a nod I'm guessing it will either be extremely subtle or a glaring parody.

On Twitter, when asked if he was doing anything special for the 1000th strip, Rich said "Posting it shortly after 999 and not long before 1001, hopefully." So, he's going to do a fast update, if all goes well.

The comic will end on strip #999. Books Six and Seven will be less than 30 strips each.

This post may not be entirely serious.

However, the strips will be around 20 pages long each, so it's being made up for.

From Twitter (https://twitter.com/RichBurlew/status/435634371840585729):

Q: Are you planning anything special for 1000th OotS strip?

Posting it shortly after 999 and not long before 1001, hopefully.

I really do not expect any special treatment for 1000 - and a new OotS is good anyway :smallwink:

From the X00th strips:

(50): The Semi-Secret Origin of Elan & Nale
100: Lampshading
200: Miko revealed
300: End of NCftPB
400: Haley and Elan kiss
500: Pretty long strip, but imo nothing really special (Roy convinces Eugene to scry for the others)
600: Callback to 100
700: Normal strip
(750): That was the best day EVER!!
800: Normal strip
900: Normal strip

And imo it only highlights the transition to a comic following a story. Imo it is better to just unroll and follow the story and not to try and fudge to hit some nice numbers. (Though if it happens to get an awesome strip, I will like it, no matter how it is numbered :smallwink:)

On the other hand, we all have to admit that 1000 isn't in the same leagues as 700, 800 as far as numeric milestones go.

Sure, back when the current comic was in the 800 range, I would've bet on 900 being a normal comic, and I'd have been right, but I wouldn't be so sure about 1000.

The real question is, what's the Giant going to do for strip #1024.

My hunch is that he might make a shout-out to the strip number in the title of the comic, but not in the actual panels themselves. The story is more important than numerical milestones.

Besides, the OOTS characters have three fingers on each hand. To them, strip 1000 was all the way back here. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0216.html)

Obviously, strip #1000 is going to be a Jambalaya cook-out after they crash-land the Mechane in a swamp near the Dwarven lands.

The return of (1.67 * 10^15)Q from #646.

Hmm. While I don't think Rich would sidetrack the narrative at this point, it's kind of fun to speculate on what he would do.

Guest strip? (but who?)
Return of the Dirt Farmers? (Easiest to do, likely)
Conclave of the Gods? (Thor jokes!)
Love letter to Mrs. Giant? (TBH, it'd take a looong strip :smallwink:)
Something even more outstanding I'm not qualified to deduce? (Depressingly likely)

Don't give me too much credit; I double-checked his math before posting so as to not look foolish if I happened to be wrong.

Besides, look on the bright side - at least he didn't write the joke in base thirteen.

Super ultra bonus points to whoever gets that reference. Don't let me down, nerds, I know you're out there.

Real mean split infinitives.

Don't panic; at least one person got the joke. :-)

"What do you get when you multiply six by nine?" if memory serves. Though Douglas Adams did say he wasn't thinking of base 13 when he wrote the question or answer.

Tom Lehrer's not dead yet, he might get around to it one of these days.

More like, who doesn't write jokes in base thirteen? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base_13#Base_13_in_fiction).

Also, there's a really cool bit in there about Lewis Carroll that I didn't know about, but that's done in base 42.

Tom Lehrer's not dead yet, he might get around to it one of these days.
OK, I really need to watch videos of this guy. Thanks!

It'll probably just be a full page picture of a stickified Giant looking annoyed that people keep obsessed with numerical milestones.

Hooray! Downside is the points are as obscure as the reference, so small hit to your bragging rights there.

Also, I'm assuming you're talking about the split infinitive that I totally pulled off well.

Also, for the 1000th comic - I'm putting my money on "advancing the plot without any reference to the number." And yes, I totally whited out the only part of this post that is in any way relevant to the actual thread. I'm awesome like that.

Yeah, showing up somewhere and saying "I have super ultra nerd bonus points" probably won't get me anywhere.

I love to split infinitives, and I appreciate your ability to do so.

I hope it's an animated strip made with creepily shoddy CGI models.

I think it'd be nice if he showed the final fates of every dead character in the afterlife.

Alternatively, dress up Thor like Chris Hemsworth and decide whether or not he likes that look.

Nah, just something he wants to deal with in some detail. The two data sets overlap pretty heavily, but are not equivalencies.

Obviously, Haley will be kidnapped by several dwarf kids dressed as goblins, where she will get an iron skull, and bash the brains out of them, before realizing they were actually kids, and then that leads to the re-introduction of Ivan and Hilygia/Hiilyha/Higgia/however you spell her name.
