View Full Version : Building a Chef theme

Not a very serious idea and more an exercise in making a primarily roleplay build that can hopefully be mildly competent at actually battling and adventuring too. Just wondering what suggestions as to class and build and theme people would use toward building a character that's all about being a chef. Obviously I'm hoping to get more then just maxed Craft: Cooking and Profession: Chef. If anyone's seen Toriko, the way the powerful chefs have combat abilities that are somehow in a weird way related to the preparation of food (like Setsuno's air pressure manipulation "like a pressure cooker!" or several chef's swordsmanship with cooking knives.) I'm imagining something that uses cooking knives/daggers and maybe some fire stuff (because like...ovens and searing.) To that end, maybe Swordsage? Though I was thinking Psionics might have a good variety of options to choose from and flavor (hehhh) as cooking-based. Any other suggestions?

What about Exemplar? You could be the Iron Chef!

The spell prestidigitation is a must. Then you can always have clean cooking surfaces and utensils, and it can flavor food!

EDIT: A wizard with maxed knowledge skills will know about every creature and the best way to cook them. Perhaps he seeks to travel the multiverse to sample every creature. How crazy of a villain/recurring character would that be? Incredibly powerful, but utterly apathetic about the plights of the PCs. He just wanted to try green dragon.

Well, if you're looking for food or food-related material, I just so happen to have this old project of mine that may well suit your needs.

The Omnomnomicon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?262419-The-Omnomnomicon-BIG-magic-system!-PEACH!)

Unfortunately, the project died before the classes could be finished, but I'm sure you can work something out with your DM.

For brew potion there is a variant rule that they can be made into food rather than potions, so the Brew Potion feat might be called for

No ideas about crunch, but you could play a ghoul/ghast(the latter's stench is somewhat problematic) who disguises himself as a chef(or maybe was a chef) and is in charge of preparing food for the adventuring part(from "leftovers").

You would want to ask the rest of the people you are playing with and your DM though(it is also squicky).

Maybe a bit of Exemplar just for the skill checks. Although I do rather like the idea of being a Warforged and calling myself the Iron Chef. Forever feeling the agony of making delicious food and never tasting it.

Spellbook=>Cookbook? Now that's something I could get behind. And the maxed knowledges are a good call. Maybe Archivist and having the Archivist's Dark Knowledge be recipes.

That is definitely relevant, and also hilarious. I forgot about Spell Thematics, but it fits really well for making anything "food themed." But I'd still need to think of good spells which can be used in a cooking-type way.

Haha, that's very cool, but I try to stay away from Homebrew if I can.

I had thought of that, and there's that Master Alchemist PrC which lets you make potions of up to 9th level, but I don't know if I just want to say "potions are now food" if there are more flavorful options out there.

Very true that any kind of undead or otherwise creepy thing is made much better if it's a chef with a quality taste in creepy, but I'm more interested in ArcanistSupreme's suggestion of playing it straight and just wanting to eat tons of monsters and the like as opposed to being creepy and eating humanoids.

Absolutely hilarious. Perhaps he is forced to use share memory (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/share-memory) to experience the food? Maybe he even force-feeds his enemies, and then uses the spell (if you want to be extra metal).

Make sure that the recipes are written in dozens of languages (and maybe even a few invented ones) that only the wizard can read. Use secret page for the absolute best recipes, which must be guarded jealously. The book is your entire life, containing recipes, spells, journal entries describing the foods, and so on. It should be protected using every tactic available.

Nobody says that my idea and his are mutually exclusive. :smalltongue: But seriously, would you perhaps seek the immortality of undeath to have enough time to try it all? Or perhaps you have had the reincarnate spell cast on you several times already so you could keep coming back in a fresh, young body.

Other random ideas include (but are not limited to):

Polymorphing into something with a better/more sensitive sense of taste than a human
Avoiding elemental spells to avoid burning/contaminating/damaging the meat
Trying to kill the monsters humanely (i.e. knock them out first, either via non-lethal damage or spells like the sleep line)
Getting a refrigerated bag of holding to store meat until adequate cooking facilities are available
Purchasing a reusable item of gentle repose to further aid in food preservation
Lots of divination to track down the next recipe/dish

You could nab the metamagic feat that turns all spell damage into subdual damage, and make vague jokes about tenderizing dinner.

Gentle Repose to preserve your victi...I mean ingredients.

Might want to also nab a few ranks in Profession (butcher) so you can harvest your meat and such safely.

Some kind of extradimension storage space to house your wares and kitchen gadgets.

The mass version of Unseen Crafter to be your army of kitchen hands.

Something's Cooking (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20010413a) (no longer hosted, but found here (http://www.pathfindermodules.com/uploads/3/2/8/9/3289119/somethings_cooking.pdf)) should be relevant.

There is a possibly official joke PRC called Adamantine Chef in the Knowledge Arcana 9(Some sort of web magazine made by the people in the wizards forums).

You may have to look in archive.org to download it though as I think the downloads were removed from the wizards website.

Also Pie Fiend (https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fools/20030401a).

If you go the Potion Route

Brewing is a very good support to any Chef. Gotta always have the right drink to go with that Hero's Feast you just created.

I once built Gordom Ramsey... a half-fiend half-elf, I went Rogue (fighter feat ACF) 13/ Exemplar 1/... went for knowledge devotion, and some other stuff, it was fun.

I've made a BBEG build for a Obese Gluttonous Butcher that would eat everything and everyone... using Deformity (Obese), Swallow Whole, and a giant Cleaver with Monkey Grip.

Dip into either Psion or Psywar for a level, and pick up Synesthete.

Now you can taste your food by touching it (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/synesthete.htm).

Pick up Control Flames and/or Matter Agitation if you go Psion, and you can cook food pretty much anywhere, anywhen.

Also Pie Fiend (https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fools/20030401a).A 13th level Neraph with a Psionic class and maybe Expanded Knowledge can turn into one of these at level 13 with Metamorphasis, and Metamorphic Transfer is a thing. I'd recommend Ardent or PsyWar so you can stay Wis focused and pump that Profession (Chef) skill.

Maybe go with a Tash build if you want to spice it up (excuse the pun). Real world Buddhist monks have lots of cultural mythology surrounding their appetites, due to the fact that they eat their daily meal before noon, and hence tend to consume a lot in a single sitting.

This is the sort of thing I want more suggestions about, what spells and powers that as they are can be used in a cooking capacity.
