So this game is on sale on Steam and I remember Yahtzee Croshaw being mostly positive about it. However I've mostly been seeing negative reviews elsewhere. I understand that the graphics are a bit dated. Is that the problem or does the gameplay let itself down?

In a word... TERRIBLE.
I've played it a little, managed a whole ten mins before I gave up, the game (for me) felt clunky and unfinished, the mellee was repetitive, using the same animation over and over, took way to many hits to kill anything, guns were ok, but even still other games do it much better.

If your looking for an actual Zombie game I would recomend either:
Dayz (a personal favourite)
Left for Dead 2
Dead Island
or Dead Rising.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've heard and seen from it as well. If need be you can check out the GiantBomb Quicklook (http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-the-walking-dead-survival-instinct/2300-7170/) of it to get a picture.

Dead Island
...

Don't.

That is not a good game. In fact, it's aggravatingly (http://domochevsky.deviantart.com/art/Dead-Island-Observation-1-259068970) bad (http://domochevsky.deviantart.com/art/Dead-Island-Observation-2-259709524). (But the first act is pretty decent, as far as setting and zombie killing goes.)

I remember Yahtzee Croshaw being mostly positive about it.

He was probably talking about the other The Walking Dead game, which is an adventure game rather than an action one.

Pretty sure nobody, anywhere, has ever said anything positive about Survival Instinct. It sucks and is very much the traditional "Make some money on a crappy game from a movie(or TV series in this case) IP".
The other Walking Dead game though, the one from Telltale games, is pretty great.

Yahtzee's review (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/7074-The-Walking-Dead-Survival-Instinct) is actually a lot more positive than I expected it to be, but I feel like he praises the potential of the game more than the game itself.

I haven't played the game myself. That said, judging from what friends have told me, the reviews found online and the user score on Metacritic... Well, it's not a great game.

If you really want to get into the walking dead universe I think you'd be better off with the walking dead games published by Telltale (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/6044-Walking-Dead), which I found to be excellent.
If you're looking for a zombie action game... Well, you can probably do better than Survival Instinct.

I think Yahtzee's positive review is at least due in part to the fact that he doesn't read or watch The Walking Dead and he found Daryl to be kind of a novelty.

He also tends to be a little more gracious to games that try something different and Survival Instinct did have some mildly innovative mechanics.

I haven't played it, but I heard it was buggy as hell.

There was that one moment when he was standing on top of the car completely surrounded by zombies where I thought "Okay, that's pretty sweet" - and then he jumped down and started the QTEs. Oh God, the horror.
