As title. What are the most nastiest encounters you've thrown at your players or experienced?

I once threw a glass cannon monster that could not be hit or affected by magic since my group wanted to reroll after they realized their characters could be better.

Meikin.

A 1st level Bard. She was owned by an unsavory fellow the PCs had to kill. As she had been sold by her family, socially she couldn't return home and was very dependant others to take care of normal social interactions.

Party came to a halt for 4 hours (real time) trying to figure out what to do with her. The discussed it for the next week until the next gaming session when they decide that they had to take care of her.

Almost had a party melt down between who wanted to do what with her. Not exactly a TPK, but could have completely destroyed the party....

Constrict (Ex) Varanthian deals 2d8+12 points of damage with
a successful grapple check. She can make six rake attacks
against a grappled foe as well.
Improved Grab (Ex) To use this ability, Varanthian must hit a
creature with her bite attack. If she wins the grapple check,
she can attempt to constrict the opponent or swallow the
opponent on the following round.
Swallow Whole (Ex) Varanthian can try to swallow a grabbed
Medium or smaller creature by making a successful
grapple check. If she swallows an opponent, she can use
Cleave to bite and grab another opponent. A swallowed
creature takes 2d8+12 damage plus 8 acid damage each
round and can cut its way out by using a light slashing
or piercing weapon to deal 25 points of damage to the
gizzard (AC 15). Varanthian’s gizzard can hold 2 Medium
or 8 Small opponents.
Disease (Su): Any creature hit by a wendigo’s bite attack
must succeed on a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 wendigo’s
HD + wendigo’s Con modifier) or become infected with
the wendigo’s hunger. The incubation period is 1d3 days,
and the disease deals 1d3 points of Wisdom damage. Additionally,
each day that a victim takes Wisdom damage from
the disease, he must succeed on a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2
wendigo’s HD + wendigo’s Cha modifier) or become overwhelmed
with an insatiable hunger for the flesh of its own
race. The victim stalks and tries to kill the closest member
of its own race; if it does so, it feeds on the victim’s body
and then returns home with no memory of the tragic
event. If a victim of this hunger is reduced to a Wisdom
score of 0, he transforms into a wendigo immediately and
races off into the night sky at such speed that his feet burn
away into bloody, charred stumps.

Kobold snipers against 1st-level characters, attacking with heavy crossbows from the other side of a canyon, 200 feet away.

A 3e/3.5e mix-and-match.
A sole Vorr.
A split party.

It viciously and easily murdered the two level sixes it encountered, then shifted into DR50/+5 form and found and obliterated the other two.

"WHAT THE F**K IS THE CR ON THAT THING, WE'RE ONLY SIXTH LEVEL!"
"… Four."
"-Teen?"
"Nnnnnope."

A temple of Kyuss.

First comment I got was "Aren't they moving a bit fast for zombies ?"

Eventually the party had a plan, but the Wizard screwed up and they almost caused a Wormapocalypse.

I was inspired by the spaghetti western A Fist Full of Dollars. Instead of a town with two bosses, I had a dungeon with two dragons. Two white dragon sisters were fighting over their deceased Mother's horde. One had goblin minions, and the other had Kobold minions. The two factions were at war. In walks the party and they get caught up in the middle. Long story short, both Dragons eventually end up dead. They break the seal to the Mother's horde chamber, and discover that the Mother has become a Dracolitch. They defeat her, but there just so happens to be a fresh dragon corpse around. So they then had to defeat the proto- dracolitch. Oh yes.... there was a 2nd Dragon corpse around. So they have to fight it a 3rd time. :smallamused:

That was one of my favorites. My players probably would point to others, but that one was fun.

to this day some of my players still swear they're more terrified of dragons than anything else. it may have had something to do with myself playing a great wyrm fang dragon intelligently and making full use of all its abilities. (like the line where it can use its sorcerer casting on cleric spells)
