Another idea just popped into my god awful excuse of a brain.

No strings attached, just let's create a world together, starting from major scale to micro scale.

Each post defines one thing in the world.

The world is called "Aedron"

The god of Darkness hates anything pertaining to light because once, when he tried to steal the sun, he was instead blinded by it.

Objection, contradicts a previously established fact! Aedron is lit not by a sun, but by the Sphere of Fire which encloses it!

There are a total of Fourteen Spheres.

While the Kings of Ancient Night do have a certain infamy and stigma attached to them within the Inner Spheres, their role as guardians in obscuring all the other spheres of Aedron from That-Which-Lies-Beyond is acknowledged and respected.
So you are saying although the Kings of Ancient Night are precieved as evil, in their portfolio is defense (slightly too much detail for right now but I would like clarification)

TheFamilarRaven

Aedron is predominantly dry land, rather than water.

There is no "sphere of earth" or "sphere of air", Aedron is the result of the two colliding in ancient times. The few pockets of water on Aedron fell from the "Sphere of water" after several collisions with other comet-like celestial objects.

Addendum:

Aedron was created by 6 gods and/or goddesses

It took the powers of the 6 gods/goddesses to collide the spheres of Earth and air.

More like, the sphere of darkness obscures all attempts to look beyond, either outward from Aedron, or inward into the machinations of the other Spheres and the mortal inhabitants at it's core.

This is important because That-Which-Lies-Beyond would very much like to get a foothold through the Kings of Ancient Night into Aedron.

So...

Aedron, the World So Far

Spheres

Sphere of Fire - Acts like the Sun of Aedron. Inner most sphere. Occasionally, the light from the sphere dies down, allowing for twilight in some places of Aedron.

Sphere of Water - Acts like the moon by reflecting light fro mthe Sphere of Fire, also houses a terrestrial sphere within, which is known as Mosal, and is home to elven kind.

Sphere of Gold - Established, but purpose remains unclear, except that the Skald are adept at channeling it's magical powers

Sphere of Mirrors - Houses dead souls, a ferry comes every "full moon" to transport the deceased to this sphere. Is the sphere most associated with the deity Maarkhoosa.

Sphere of Life - Home to Sslarkasz, Goddess of Wisdom and Life. As as a conduit for healing magic, as positive energy is defined as healing magic.

Sphere of Darkness - Outermost sphere, home to the Kings of Ancient Night. The sphere obscures the rest of the know universe from "That Which Lies Beyond". This Sphere also happens to be the god, Aelon.

Sphere of Sparks - dynamic and ever changing, one of the outer spheres.

Sphere of Cogs - Artificial sphere created by Batte'for, God of all things mechanical. Houses a race of sentient automatons known as Orlots

Sphere of Form -

Sphere of Dreams -

There are 4 spheres left to be named and defined.

Deities

Maarkhoosa - God/Goddess (was not defined) that is the patron deity of Western Caldonia. Most associated with the Sphere of Mirrors. Exact portfolio/domains have yet to be specified.

Ssalarkasz - Goddess of Wisdom and Life. She inhabits the positive energy sphere and is the patron deity of the Snakemen

Aelon - Half God, half "That-Which-Lies-Beyond, his entire being makes up the Sphere of Darkness.

Batte'for - God of all things mechanical, created the artificial Sphere of Cogs

Creator of Energy ,, (i'll look up name in a bit

There is 1 major gods/goddesses to be named and defined

Lesser Deities

-War

Races

Note - All races are reptilian or avian, with the exception of a few subterranean races

Athidians - Insectoid race that are known for the blacksmiths.

Orinthians - Race resembling flightless ravens (so Kenku). They are the most dominant race across Aedron. They can be found in almost any surface nation, but have the highest population density within Western Caldonia and Imperial Caldonia

Skald - Anthropomorphic komododragons that dwell atop the northern plateaus of Aedron. They are adept at channeling magic from all the spheres, but in particular, the Sphere of Gold.

Orlots - Sentient automatons that swell upon the Sphere of Cogs

Erneans - Also known as eagle-kin, are the most numerous race capable of unassisted flight. The are renowned mages, who often draw upon the power of the Spheres of Sparks, Water and Mirrors. Highly militaristic. They have a "master race" attitude which causes them to clash often with other nations/races.

Elves - Not defined, except that they dwell upon a piece of earth within the sphere of water.

Snakemen - Not defined, except that their patron deity is Sslarkasz.

Lizardfolk - Race used as slaves by "other countries". Occasionally riot, making lots of carnage.

Grolen - Subterranean humanoids that create constructs to keep themselves safe, or to do tasks their skinny frames can't handle. Their patron deity is Batte'for, and they etch his symbol upon all of their creations.

Nations

Skald - Once simply a bunch of squabbling city-states, the Skald were united by Protige Fald into one nation. They resides atop the northern plateaus of Aedron.

Western Caldonic Sultanate - Was formed after the 9 years rebellion, with their capitol being Western Caldonia.

Eastern Cladonic Sultanate - Better known as Imperial Caldonia, led by Emperor Jurica Mormosa II

Fillia - Small but wealthy nation that thrives on its mineral exports.

Athrion - A walking city-state, powered by battery urns filled with pure fire, from the Sphere of Fire. Collects resources by raiding other nations with power magic.

Organizations

The Scaled - One of many groups that began with the intention of ending the enslaving of the Lizardfolk, but has since degrading into a terrorist organization, masked by noble ideals. They are lead by Calos Din'Drak, who resides in Western Caldonia.

King of Ancient Night - Stigmatized as evil, they never the less guard the rest of the know universe against "That-Which-Lies-Beyond". They dwell within the Sphere of darkness

Notable People

Calos Din'Drak - Leader of The Scaled, has a hideout in Western Caldonia

Protige Fald - Powerful mage who united the Skald into one nation.

Emperor Jurica Mormosa II, ruler of Imperial Caldonia.

Magic

-Magic is tied to altitude, so many great cities are built on mountains and boast tall towers for their mages.

-"Lowlies" is a derogatory term for the magically inept

-Deities do not empower their worshipers directly with magical power, instead, there are certain locations/artifacts which patrons may draw the god/goddess' power from.

Planar travel (that is to say, travel between the spheres), is restricted to certain times of the year, unless a group of two or more powerful mages invoke the tedious ritual.

Magic is common, but some places on Aedron distrust its practitioners.

Magic is based on proximity to spheres, therefore, on Aedron, magic drawn from the sphere of fire is direct and powerful, while magic from the sphere of darkness is more subtle. But that reverses if say the caster draws upon the power of the sphere of darkness, while in the sphere of darkness.

Lore

-There was once a common amphibious ancestors, but it has long since vanished into the annals of time. However, ruins of their civilization dot the swamps of Aedron.

-Some locations are known to be places of "True Night", where the power of Aelon's magic blocks out direct light from the Sphere of Fire.

-The seasons of Aedron are due to complex interactions between the various spheres. The flaring and guttering of the Sphere of Fire and the pseudotidal motions of the Sphere of Water have the greatest direct effect, but all of the Spheres play their part. The seasons are irregular, but predictable. Imperial Caledonia has the most accurate and refined calendrical system, but even this needs to be constantly adjusted.

I think that's everything ... if I missed something, say so.

Question: It has been stated that magic drawn from spheres is related to proximity. That implies that magic itself can be drawn from one of more spheres without divine assistance. However it has also been stated that the God/Goddesses do not empower their worshipers directly, instead having specific places/items that act as fonts of power. So how can one draw upon the power of the sphere of darkness, if the Sphere of Darkness itself is a deity?

Perhaps it isn't a deity in the common sense of the word, but the sphere itself is intelligent and has many qualities ascribed to the divine, and so rules over itself rather than letting another being control it. It has much less of these fonts of power, but those that exist are very powerful because of its connection not just to the deity but to the sphere the deity is.

Alternately: where the planes are physical, the gods are more ethereal or ephemeral. In short, their existence in the world is insufficient to enable mortals to syphon their powers. However, Aelon has made himself into a plane, has made himself solid. He is both a god and a plane, and therefore shares the qualities of both. Thus, his physical nature enables his power to be syphoned.

On the subject of night:

Since it is lit and warmed, not by a sun, but by an enclosing sphere of fire, Aedron does not experience night as it would be familiar to residents of a heliocentric system. However, the flames of the Sphere of Fire are not uniform or constant. Often, large swathes of it will die down to relatively low levels, and transmit only weak, dim light, leaving parts of the planet in an eerie twilight. It is during these periods of twilight that the reflected light from the Plane of Water is most visible, and that travel to the planes beyond the Plane of Fire.

There are also a few areas of True Night, being those locations infused with the power of Aelon, or the locations of those objects infused with his power, where the directlight of the Sphere of Fire is magically blocked out, leaving only the reflected light of the Sphere of Water, and, on occasion, glimpses of the spheres beyond.

The Grolens worship Batte'for and all of their successful constructs have his symbol (a cog) inscribed on the part that fulfills the constructs primary function, for example, a lifter construct would have the cog on on it's arm or hands, a battle construct would have it on it's weapon.

The Walking City of Athrion is inhabited by many species, united by a cultural, rather than racial, identity. It is highly egalitarian, which does not mean it is ruled by eagle-people.

Athrion has 9 districts. Each district trains its residents in a different "Art of War" , as Athrion citizens would call it, so they can continue raiding other nations. The city itself is run by a senate, with each district electing one senator (usually a retired commander), every 5 years, (No term limits).

Instead: Aelon's search for power is because he is LN and will do anything to protect Aedron from the Powers Outside.

Since I've been taking notes in spoilers a few posts back, could you clarify one point please. Earlier you stated Aelon's alignment to be Lawful evil, not lawful neutral.

And now some further contribution. Orinthians, Aedron's most dominant race, resemble flightless ravens (essentially Kenku). They are prevelent across many nations, including Athrion, Fillila, and even the Skald lands. But western Caldonia and Imperial Caldonia have the highest Orinthian demographic of any nation by a long shot.

Athrion has 9 districts. Each district trains its residents in a different "Art of War" , as Athrion citizens would call it, so they can continue raiding other nations. The city itself is run by a senate, with each district electing one senator (usually a retired commander), every 5 years, (No term limits).

Did I? I thought I hadn't set that. I meant for him to be conflicted from the start, willing to do Evil things, but ultimately for the protection of all. It's possible I'm just fluctuating on whether that makes him Evil or Neutral.

You did indeed.

Aelon, The god of Darkness, is actually only half god, the other half being That Which Lies Beyond. He also is the plane of Darkness itself, and is Lawful Evil. He does not rule anything.

Anyways, more facts!

The seasons of Aedron are due to complex interactions between the various spheres.

One of the many wonderful inventions by the Grolen is the "Magiflux".

A Magiflux is a specially treated glass sphere around 3 inches in diameter and it glows with a light green glow.

Lowlies tend to love Magifluxes due to the fact it lets them "store" magical energy from higher up.

Roshal is the Creator of all energy, and fashioned Crexul, his son, who is a lesser deity of War, out of energy from the Sphere of Fire.

Bring people back from death is very difficult and dangerous. Once the monthly ferry get's the soul it becomes impossible unless you find a way to get back from the sphere of mirrors. Assassinations of those in high possessions traditionally happen right before the full moon, partly so you won't have to deal with the target again, partly not to keep them waiting.

I think "full moon" should refer to when the entire sphere of water is reflected.

Grolens are unique in that they have developed techniques to harvest the residual magic from the collapsed Sphere of Earth. However, this magic is both weak and hard to harness, which explains the Grolens' use of technology to compensate.

The Krillik of the Morthey Mountains are a race of small, rotund, flightless bird people (think Kiwis), who travel in slings carried by the non-intelligent, long necked, leathery skinned pterranodons known as Quetzes. Individual Krillik can be carried by a single Quetz, but teams of up to eight Quetzes have been trained to fly in tandem carrying larger slings between them.

Allegedly, the Krillik Big Man Twai Twei had a flying palace carried by a team of scores of Quetzes, highly trained enough to be unharnessed and reharnessed during flight, enabling rotation of the Quetzes without landing, but this tale is believed to be apocryphal by most scholars.

The Krillik dwell in villages carved into mountain slopes and practice terrace farming. They have an advanced system of maths and engineering, and those who have studied under the Krillik Kenning Men and Kenning Woman at the Big Knowledge House are sought after across Aedron as architects, siege engineers, and astronomers.

The Third District of Athrion (that is, the third widdershins from the Great Engines), is dedicated to the Art of Siege Warfare, teaching its residents how to design and build siege engines, to tunnel beneath enemy fortifications and lay mines, and to most effectively deploy troops so as to cut of supply to an enemy force.

The Third District's senator is the retired Krillik commander Milmok, affectionately referred to by her supporters as "Little Mother." Rivals would be wise not to dismiss her because of this diminutive title- Milmok has held the position for thirty years, and proved quite adept at the political maneuvering and occasional street-fighting necessary to maintain power.

There is a shadow realm below or sideways, depending on how you look at it, from Aedron. It is ruled by Demons and serves as an afterlife. There is no correlative realm above Aedron, Aedron itself is the realm of the gods.

Bolded statement raises some issues with previously established facts ...

Dead souls reside on the sphere of mirrors. On every "full moon" the Ferry goes to Aedron to pick souls and tow them to the after life. Those who don't want to, or can't pay stay as ghosts.

either clarify, delete or add an addendum that states why there is a second afterlife.

Also question: Are you saying this shadow realm is beneath Aedron .. as in, the core of the "planet" is this shadow realm? Or are you saying this shadow realm is a sphere the is "below" Aedron. I'm just a little confused and would like some clarification. Because if neither of those things, then that also conflicts with the fact that there are no other planes of existence, each sphere represents another plane or "realm".

Anyway, for some contribution!

Athidians communicate with various clicks and chattering of their mandables, as such, they can not speak any other languages other than their own, but they may still be able to understand other languages. Likewise, no other race can speak the Athidian language, but they may be trained to understand it (think Wookies). Athidian "writing" is read by touch, not by sight and sounds.

One of the many dangers of learning magic, is the chance to become a "Jorlak Skor", which is Skaldic for "Cursed Giant". It occurs when an arcane practitioner draws more power than they can control from a sphere, resulting in the mage loosing his mind, and transforming into a giant creature, vaguely resembling their former body, and imbued with the power of the sphere that overwhelmed them. This is a rare occurrence among veteran mages, but overly ambitious apprentices often find themselves losing control of their power.

No "cure" other than death is known to exist.

Jallorn
2014-05-30, 06:54 PM
There is a vacination, of sorts, for becoming a Jorlak Skor; you can deal with a demon. Among other possible perks (the deals vary), the demon can help regulate the power you draw upon, meaning that if you can draw it to yourself, you can utilize it (relatively) safely.

The most common downside is that the demon drains your life force over time, generally cutting your life force in half. This often leads to the spellcaster learning spells to drain others' life forces to make up for the difference.

Deals with demons almost always either lead to, or are straight up for the purpose of, the caster getting access to darker, eviler magics.

The end result of this is that direct travel from Aedron to the sphere of darkness is only possible every 121 years, as all the holes align. Aedron has a green sky, because magic ...

Seriously ... there are billions, if not, gazillions of minute particles hanging in Aedron's atmosphere, although invisible to the naked eye, they can be detected easily enough by magic (if close enough). It is theorized that these particles are minuscule green crystals, that when when they are gathered in large quantities, filter the light from the Sphere of Fire, causing the green hue of the sky.

More academically relevant, it is also common belief (both scientific and superstitious), that these particles trap the air on Aedron, thus without them, everyone would suffocate.

(Superstitions usually don't mention tiny green crystals but something along the lines of the sky trapping the air)

The Sphere of Dreams is the penultimate sphere, next to the Sphere of Shadows, and Psions are capable of manifesting an astral form on that sphere from any other sphere. All psions draw power from the Sphere of Dreams to a degree, but since they don't weild magic, it doesn't work exactly the same. Magic linked to the Sphere of Dreams is most like psionics, and can most effectively affect psionics, and be affected by them in return.

ALSO

One of the few examples of non-evil demon magic, though it is still extraordinarily dangerous, is the method of traveling to the Demon Sphere in order to get to another sphere. It's safer for the entire system of Spheres since it leaves no rips, but much more dangerous for the travelers, since they need to physically travel across the demonic mirrors of the material Spheres.

The Snakemen dwell in tower-cities in a mountainous nation known as Korfyl. The population consists mostly of Mages, Scholars, and Psions, all of whom are known to amass some of the best libraries in Aedron in their pursuit of wisdom. Wisdom and Life are revered by the Snakemen as the holiest things any creature may possess.

The tower-cities are massive spires constructed over decades, though the largest date back at least a couple centuries. They are divided into libraries, universities, forums, markets, housing, etc. in a similar fashion to normal cities, but with expansion being vertical rather than horizontal.

The Elves were created as servants and messengers by Mizukan, the LN (minor?) Goddess of Water and Time. They are tall and slender, with silvery pale skin, pointed ears, and a cape-like aura that resembles water mist.

The Sphere of Gold is not actually made of gold, but is so called because of the abundance of golden-colored life-granting energies that serve as the air there. There is a grove of apple trees on the sphere, and one tree is rumored to bring eternal life and complete restoration to those who eat of its fruit.

Although there are no Spheres of Air or Earth, magic related to those elements can be harnessed from Aedron itself.

CORRECTION:

The Snakemen are a pacifistic race that live in seven isolated villages composed of treehouses connected by bridges, deep within swamps across Aedron. Despite what you would expect from a tribal race, they are quite advanced and are reknowned scholars. The center of each village is a large treehouse (or occasionally a hollowed-out tree) that serves as a community library, and discussion forum for all public matters. Information is recorded in scrolls made of a bamboo-like substance. Most Snakemen will at some point in their life go on an adventure for the purpose of increasing the sum of their tribe's collective knowledge, and as a result just about any information you could desire can be found in at least one tribe's library.

It is also rumored that there are four apple trees on the Sphere of Gold that bring only death to mortals, each horrifying in its own way. The kindest is the most fatal, bringing instant death the moment the apple enters your mouth. The second permits the greatest, yet still slim, chance of survival, inducing a multitude of different, horrible dieases in the ingester; usually at least one of the diseases is contagious. The third makes all food unsatisfying, and no matter how much you eat, you will starve and waste away. The fourth is by far the worst, destroying your mind, turning you insane in the most horrifying ways, making your life a living hell before causing you to turn on those around you. It is rumored that if one were to succeed in killing everyone they knew, they would be cured of their madness, and left for their sorrow to kill them.

Although each nations have their own culture, traditions and stories. There is one common tale that all the peoples of Aedron share. About a mythical box the Gods hid. All similarities end there, as each nation tells a different story of what lies inside. Some claim it's enlightenment, others claim nothing but old bone and other claim it is a creature from That-Which-Lies-Beyond.
Some claim that there is a man inside the box, who calls out, whimpering really, begging pitifully for release. But this is a trap, where he then steals the soul of whoever is foolish enough to peek. But that could just be a legend ... right?

The stories are prevalent enough on Aedron to lead scholars to believe in the actual existence of the box, but they can not agree on its purpose or location.

The second story is in hastily-carved runes, and describes a creature resembling an Elf descending from the heavens and striking the ground, causing the ground to "become as water beneath ou-". The story appears to go on, but the writer never finished carving the next rune.

This was my understanding as well. That the central sphere is the Sphere of Fire, serving as a sun. Also, Athreos seems to be not so much a planet as a Dyson Sphere/Ring? Also also, I think the Sphere's of Earth and Water combined to become Athreos, and so are no longer seperate spheres?

Or was it that the Sphere of Earth became part of the Sphere of Water, and so the Sphere of Water is a thing that has Athreos, which is kind of the Sphere of Earth, inside it? In which case it could be a planet, except that there's no night as such, just fluctuations of day.

Oh, hey, since there's no night: there are no Owls on Athreos, nor Bats, nor any other kind of purely nocturnal creature. Notably, this includes Vampires. Werewolves might exist, since there's a moon.

The celestial spheres, or celestial orbs, were the fundamental entities of the cosmological models developed by Plato, Eudoxus, Aristotle, Ptolemy, Copernicus and others. In these celestial models the apparent motions of the fixed stars and the planets are accounted for by treating them as embedded in rotating spheres made of an aetherial, transparent fifth element (quintessence), like jewels set in orbs - Source, wikipedia

The way i saw it, the Sphere of Fire was set on an Aetherial rings rotating around Aedron. So, the sphere of Fire it , is the ring on which a massive "planet" of fire (or, the plane of fire), moved about. When you think about it this way, it's easier to visualize, but it may not be the correct interpretation. :smalltongue:

The way i saw it, the Sphere of Fire was set on an Aetherial rings rotating around Aedron. So, the sphere of Fire it , is the ring on which a massive "planet" of fire (or, the plane of fire), moved about. When you think about it this way, it's easier to visualize, but it may not be the correct interpretation. :smalltongue:

The issue with this design is it more or less nullifies the "travel according to seasons" note. Not to mention it makes the Sphere of Darkness utterly useless as a defensive measure to keep stuff out.

There's a secret inner sphere, inside the deepest parts of the planet. The lizardfolk draw can use magic from it, despite them being at such a low altitude.

To clarify, my idea states that
1. The sphere of fire is essentially the plane of fire, the nexus sphere of fire is the closest thing to land/sun.
2. The sphere of darkness is still a good defensive measure, being dark and a barrier. The nexus sphere is a core of perpetual darkness... (I think)

Also, I had forgotten what happened to water.
Atheroas was originally in the core of water but landed on Morsal and due to its original location, is mainly inhabited by aquatic elves.

Spike, can we get an executive declaration of canon?

The Spheres of Air and Earth are fused to create Aedron.

Sphere of Water is not the Sphere of Fire.

The largest and most famous "Mages Guild" is comparable to a City State on it's own in political power. It is on the western coast of the smaller continent, on an area known as "The Wizard Coast."

The Wizard Coast is known for its frequent Mage's towers (many of which also serve as lighthouses.) One particular stretch of land has a Mage's tower visible from every point stretching at least 100 miles.

There is a princess in one of the lands who is rumored to be made of solid pink gold.

There is a kingdom of fey that lives under this princess, and farm mushrooms.

In the sphere of water live a species of intelligent nomadic lobsters that search their plane for their lost orb.

On the Sphere of Water exists Colsalphia, or Mageric for Flesh Ruins, which consists of various buildings built of of Biostructure.

Biostructure- living breathing 'buildings' that uses bone as supports and flesh as walls and ceilings while thin layers of bone make up floors. Anything weighing more than 300 pounds breaks through the floor and so anything or anyone is weighed before entering. Things that weigh more than 300 pounds must rent a floating slab to moved around.

Not that it's by any means high canon, but this was my original idea for the spheres-

The sphere of fire is just that- it is a sphere, and it is made of fire. Because I like non-standard cosmologies. The other significant facts that I remember being established are that at least some of the spheres have celestial bodies embedded in them, and that the spheres are not of uniform or consistent thickness/brightness/what have you, which allows travel through them at various times.

((I was thinking Gramarie Biostructure, but that's just as cool))

In the Sphere of Web, there are towering cities made from silk, where wisp people take residence in.
