 Please read as far as the line
before posting in this thread

The Good League of Good is a Nexus organization devoted to the care and support of those in need, a sanctuary for those that need it, and the redemption of evildoers. The organization strives to make the campsite a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

If you are brand new to ffrp, please come to the Nexus OOC thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=279910) and introduce yourself. We all want to meet you!

Charitable Activities
GLoG performs good works such as caring for distressed individuals in need, housing and feeding evacuees from the city during disasters, and healing sick and injured people in GLoG's infirmary - renowned as the most advanced place of healing in the Nexus.

Our Redemption Program
Individuals who come in search of redemption should be interviewed by a member to see how their needs can be best met, and then assigned to a mentor who will assist them. Graduation from the redemption program will occur when both the redemee and his/her mentor agree that they have made sufficient progress.

Attention Villains
Conflict is great! It's the heart of any story, and there isn't much to roleplay without it. However, as a player to player courtesy, please check in with the players who are active at any given time before launching an attack. Not everyone wants to roleplay combat scenes, and sometimes there are other things going on (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0497.html) that players don't want to interrupt for a random fight. Either a PM/IM to players, a short post in thread to say ((Mind if I introduce a villain here?)) or a longer post in the OOC thread if it's a larger plot is appreciated.

Also, please don't plan any villainy that will result in destroying the base or having the same effect (poisoning the lake, burning down the forest, etc.) without the consent of the majority of the players who would be affected.

Base Defences
he GLoG campsite is now under the effects of the spell Plaza of Downcast Eyes. Almost all teleportation and scrying spells are blocked.

A Spirit Charm has been placed on the GLoG grounds. A number of willing spirits serve to protect the grounds. See the Miscellaneous Inhabitants section for more information.

There is a perimeter of cactus plants to encourage anyone on foot to enter by one of the main entrance points.

If any of your characters add more defences, please PM them to Gulaghar so they can be added.

If you're a newbie, and you've read this far, you should know enough to join in the fun.
Everything beyond this point is Bonus Material.

Members/Residents

Please PM Gulaghar to be added to the list when you bring a character into the thread with the intention of redeeming or of having them reside here on a regular basis. IC, we'll assume there's a sign in log somewhere. :smalltongue:

Description of the GLoG Setting
Map
http://i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx135/oots12321/Other/GLoGMap7_zps7ebebcdb.png
By Gulaghar
After the original GLoG building was destroyed by an army of catpeople, the survivors took out a mortgage and purchased Phoenix Lake Campground. Facilities include the main lodge house, a bathhouse with separate male and female sections, a stable (one horse present, a chestnut mare named Fancy owned by Dr Burnett), various picnic shelters, and a few scattered cabins. It's set in the foothills of the Acro mountains, and mainly surrounded by woods. There are many hiking trails nearby leading to mountaintop vistas, waterfalls, seacoves, and various other locations, both within this thread, and in the Outside thread. The campground is also within easy walking distance of the city of Inside, though there is also a Riftline station just outside the campground for those who prefer to take the train or who have farther to go.

At the lake, there is a small dock with a little shed nearby where a few canoes and paddleboats are stored. The swimming area has a GIANT slide and a rope swing. Because GIANT slides and rope swings are awesome. There is a sandy volleyball court not far from the slide, a playground under the trees, set back from the lake somewhat, and a set of horseshoe pits.

The lake:

Buildings
Main Lodge: This large building contains an industrial kitchen with a cafeteria style serving area, and an open space that was once used as the dining hall. The space is warmed by a massive fireplace. Bunk beds are lined up on one end of the hall, opposite the kitchen, and a few comfy chairs and sofas are beginning to appear around the fireplace as they are procured. The building itself is made of stone.

Infirmary: If no PC is present in the Infirmary, patients are tended to by Nurse Piper, a ghost NPC who haunts the infirmary. Despite being a ghost, she is solid enough when managing anything to do with nursing. She has a tyrannical bedside manner, but will always put the welfare of her patients first. She is able to generally stabilize patients and do general nursing care, but cannot provide magical healing or any type of advanced medicine that would normally be performed by a doctor.

Infirmary staff include:

Quinn (The Bushranger)
Tobias (Firefox)

(PM Gulaghar if you want your character to be added to this list)

The outside of the infirmary looks just like all the rest of the buildings. Nothing distinguishes it at all. But inside, everything is white, with silver highlighting. Even though it doesn't seem possible, when looking from outside, sunlight filters inside. Giving the place a warm feeling with natural light. A soft, soothing music filters through the whole building and voices can barely be heard saying words of healing and comfort, like: "You are going to be okay." "We'll take care of you." "You are dear to us." and so on.

Each room is walled off for a limited amount of privacy, because the pixies know that humans seem to need this. Strange. But it is limited. There are no doors. The wall's angles are severe, so that people on the other side of the hall can't see into anyone's room. Only someone intentionally looking in, can see you.

Somewhat like this:

__________________________________---
_\___\___\___\___\___\___\___\___\___\_
__\___\___\___\___\___\___\___\___\___\

Cabins: Individuals can have their own room within a cabin, but they are unlikely to have a full cabin to themselves unless they come equipped with a family. Some of the cabins have been rebuilt, so may have more space than the 4 room cabins the campground came with, and a few cabins have had private bathrooms installed. All cabins are named after trees, and players are free to invent further details about their own cabins.

Main Lodge - Willow
Infirmary - Cedar
Nursery - Sapling
Visitor's Cabin - Apple

Cabin 1 - Oak
Cabin 2 - Ash
Cabin 3 - Redwood
Cabin 4 - Maple, full
Cabin 5 - Balsa, full
Cabin 6 - Cherry
Cabin 7 - Elm
Cabin 8 - Birch
Cabin 9 - Ironoak
Cabin 10 - Elm - full
Cabin 11 - Rowan, family
Cabin 12 - Poplar, family

Forest Hut 1, family
Forest Hut 2, family
Main Lodge Cellar - Mushroom, family
Cabin - Denim, family

New cabins can be added to this list as needed; just pick a tree name and start posting for it. PM Gulaghar to have it added to the official list.

Cabins coloured green are currently unavailable for new inhabitants, with the reason listed next to the cabin name. Typically this means a cabin is occupied by a family or has all its rooms filled.

The bolded buildings are not cabins of the usual sort and are not usually occupied by normal members. Few exceptions exist.

Visitor's Cabin - Apple is reserved for visitors who do not want to stay at the lodge. They are requested to check in at the main lodge, where any member can give them permission to stay for a few days. Longer than that, and unless they are in need, they would be requested to either join or move to their own place or one of the local inns.

Bathhouse: This building is divided into the men's and women's bathhouses, with entrances at either end. It has shower stalls, a line of sinks, and toilet stalls in each.

Workshop: A well built cabin designed by Reelshka, containing nothing at present but the Mainframe installation. It is locked. Drones fly in and out of a small entrance that opens for them when they send an encrypted signal.

Miscellaneous Inhabitants
The Spirits
Recently in the history of GLoG, a protective charm has been placed over the GLoG grounds. The shaman Pathfinder bid all the willing spirits that perished in and around GLoG to protect the grounds from those that would wish to do it and its inhabitants harm.

At the current time, Morty controls the spirits for the most part.

The Drones Mk 2
The drones are back at GLoG (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10099372#post10099372). Drones are NPCs who can be played by anyone, within the guidelines below:

Their Primary Function is member safety.
They no longer have teleport beams or alignment scanners.
They do have stun beams, little arms, and the ability to record what's going on around them.
They follow orders, unless those orders conflict with their Primary Function.
There are only 4-5 in operation at any one time.
They can be destroyed, but if so, they'll be restored from backup.
A few have been supplied with medical programming, and thus can be godmodded for infirmary duties.
They often have weird personality quirks and are prone to malfunctioning.
Statement: They speak in DarkOrange FixedSys
The only named drone (so far) is Caretaker, who is a private drone charged with protecting Brinika and controlled by Morty.

The Ghosts
Having been built on a Generic Ancient Burial Ground, Phoenix Lake Campground is haunted by various ghosts. They are generally harmless, and for the most part glad to have some company, though pranks and hijinks may occur. Ghosts can be NPC'd by anyone unless they are listed as PCs in the following list. They tend to speak in Gray, and mostly appear for comic purposes, but this is by no means a requirement.

The fox-pokemon might run into a tiny goblin girl as she exits the Ironoak Cabin. She's followed by a floating metal drone.

"Well, there's nothing stopping you from making words. You just have to make the right word. It might be kind of hard with the english alphabet, but you can probably get some kind of name. I bet other languages would have closer words for it. Ones made by beings that are more used to magic and supernatural things. Maybe draconic?" Bella closes her eyes for a moment, and when she next speaks it's in the language of the dragons. "<Huh, I expected the language to be more elegant, but this is a bigger mess than English. I guess that happens to any language that's around long enough.>" Bella suddenly looks tired, like she finished a good amount of activity. "And I didn't learn a word for what you want to be, either."

"Everything had to be named for the first time at some point," Sophie observes. "No reason why you can't be the first one to name some things." She then peers at Bella. "What was that language you just spoke?"

"I didn't find anything in draconic, and the closest thing in abyssal is like... blind-light-torturer? But that's almost exactly opposite of what I want to be." She shrugs at Bella before turning to Sophie and addressing her.

"But if I don't name it the right thing, then it will be wrong until someone makes a better name, and by then everyone will like the old, wrong name, and it'll be stuck being wrong." Prism looks down at her feet, shuffling them self-consciously, "Words are so hard, they get made and accepted without anyone even caring if what they're saying is right. It's..." She just trails off, pulling the end of a lock of hair into her mouth, chewing it nervously, "I don't like talking." A gentle knock can be heard, or seen, depending on if anyone is nearby the front gate/door/thing to GLoG. If some passing member decides to investigate they'll see Garn Kubo, the 5'5" Jedi Master in his tan uniform and billowing brown cloak. He requests entrance into the camp and an audience with one of the leaders.

The entrance to the Good League of Good is not a door, but a pathway, representing the path we all must walk towards righteousness. Actually it was just too difficult to build a wall around the whole thing. However, a child's mechanical car bounces down the path to meet Garn as he enters. A speaker mounted on its right mirror pops and buzzes a voice.
"Welcome to the GLoG. The leaders are not *static* but can be usually found in the Main Cabin, to which I can direct you if *static*. Alternately I can record a message for them."
Other than the lack of driver, Garn might note the pot containing a miniature forest in the passenger seat.

The other important splash of color is the bright orange hair that reaches down her back to her waist. She's not unusually tall or short, thin or fat, beautiful or ugly, she's rather plain all around. "This evil woman came up to me whilst I was out in the woods. She showed me some dead animals- at least, I thought they were dead. I hoped they were. But, the badger was still struggling, so I didn't look long and threw up. She said I could come with her or join them, so she took me through a portal. I escaped, eventually. I tried opening my own portal, but I couldn't, so I made a dimensional rift instead. It was unstable, and tried closing around me. I had to fight to keep it open all the time I was using it." She's covered in scratches and cuts from where it tried to close around her, and she's temporarily exhausted her entire magic supply, so she can't summon anything until it's recovered, which will take a while.

Jamie's eyes widen as Natalie tells what had happened, and when she finishes she goes to pull her friend into a very tight hug. While using her abilities to try to take away whatever discomfort Natalie is feeling from the scratches.

"That's...that's terrible! I wish I'd been there. I should have been there to help. I'm sorry..."

Assuming the door is knocked on, there's a young girl that answers. pitch black skinned and with a third eye in the center of her forehead, it's Scylla! This new Kate may be a bit surprised to find that Scylla also has a nest of tentacles for a lower body instead of legs.

Her face goes from surprise, to confusion, to joy, and Kate will suddenly find a pseudo-preteen launching herself for a hug, "Auntie Kate! You're here!"

Uh oh.

And even if it was, a tesseract drive is 67% safeguards to keep anything like that from happening! And you're telling me that this has happened twice now? It was only a matter of time until someone had multiple copies of themselves land here, if that holds true. And if I'm right, you're absorbing the essence she left here in the Nexus."

He walks her through it mentally, so I'll avoid posting that here. Instead, he extends a single hand, and an hourglass - illusory, but there all the same - appears above it, the sand slowly draining. "Time moves differently in different dimensions. Sometimes it's slower, sometimes it's faster, but it's never the same, down to the second." Scylla herself lifts up her hands, and a pair of glowing balls appear above them. Eric moves the hourglass into one, and the drop of sand, impossibly, slows to a crawl. Then, he moves it into the other ball, where the sand begins to flow shockingly fast.

"Her world was likely just a little ahead of yours, and so she arrived first. that's all."

Scylla lets the balls drop, and breathes out. that had been a big effort for her, "Did I do that right?" she asks her father

"Two reasons. The first, which you've said already, and the second is because the temporal rate changes constantly. Even here in the Nexus, some things go faster than others. to our perceptions, everything happens at the same rate, but that's because we're moving between different positions that are moving at different rates. In some cases, an event that might take five minutes for the people involved may seem like a week has passed outside the conversation they were having." Eric shrugs, "You learn to live with it, but there is one thing you should be aware of; This place is as much a trap as it is a paradise. the Nexus has everything you could ever desire, but it has a way of keeping you here, at least until it's tired of you. Vanilla humans have a tendency to experience physical changes while they're here; vampire transformations, the addition of cybernetic limbs, faeries deciding to play tricks on us; it happens because humans are basically an open canvas, and being the 'extremely average' appearance that you have, save your orange hair, you're a prime target." He scratches his chin, "Just... if something happens to you, keep an open mind about the change. If it's useful, attractive, or similar, then you'll probably end up keeping it. It's the debilitating changes that are a real problem, and Julie and I will be here to help if you need the help."

He honestly doesn't seem too disturbed by it, "I was actually a vanilla human when I first arrived, then became a star spawn of yog-sothoth, and then I was human again for a while, and now I'm essentially a human shaped mass of grey matter. You're more of a magnet for it than I am. Or, rather, you might be; you've only just arrived, and we don't know yet. Natalie will listen for about five minutes, joining in the tune if she knows it but otherwise remaining silent. Afterwards, she'll slowly release the hug and go back to sit on the bed. "Thank you for being such a good friend. If you've still got my pain, can I have it back please? It's nice to be without it, but I earnt it and had gotten used to it enough to ignore it." So she doesn't want to stay painless for too long, or she'll have to acclimatise to it again.

Jamie blinks in surprise, then slowly shakes her head. "I...it doesn't work that way," she says apologetically. "Once I take someone's pain from them, it...doesn't go back. One way."

Natalie might have caught the brief moment of shocked horror on the Magical Girl's face at the suggestion Natalie had 'earned' pain.

[Somewhere Incomprehensibly Distant, and Yet Near]

She stood alone.

Alone. Alien. Displaced in time to an era as wrong to her as the others no doubt felt about her. And yet she still stood. She had faced down the King himself at his strongest, when his burning heart was dissolving him from within. He had died in a cataclysm of radiant death while she was battered and broken, yet she endured. She still stood.

She stood alone.

But standing alone was all she ever needed, for she was a legion unto herself.

Without mother, without father, without a name of her own save for epitaphs whispered in her wake, without any connection to the world she carved our her own place in a hostile time where the very air itself worked to annihilate her. But carve out a place she did. And she reveled in the destruction she wrought.

There were others who weren't fond of her tastes in decorating. Chief among them the young Prince and his allies who saw her as a challenge to be overcome. Those were pitched battles, epic in scope. Some lost, some won. But regardless of outcome, she always endured. But in the end it wasn't another titan that struck her down. It was the little ones. The humans with their champions of steel and sword and burning light. It was an inglorious defeat, really. If it could even be called a defeat. A weapon meant to cast its target adrift in space and time. To render the afflicted someone else's problem.

It was an awful feeling, to have one's self ripped away atom by atom and cast to the winds of an unseeing, uncaring Cosmos. But as she felt herself being eroded by that horrible nothingness that ate away her magnificent body, something did see.

Something acted.

[The Forest]

A star was born in the middle of a clearing, a three foot wide lamp of incandescent light and howling wind that begin spitting out matter in all directions, spraying the surrounding glade with a hurricane of rocks, soil, water, and bits of twisted metal. The anomaly slowly shrunk as it disgorged its cargo indiscriminately, gradually contracting until at last there was nothing more than a brilliant pin-prick that vanished with a WHUMP! of displaced air.

And deposited a naked human woman rather unceremoniously on a bed of moss, alive, breathing, and wholly unconscious. Her hair was ruddy and disheveled, a muddy red shot through with brown and black. Aside from her violent arrival the only thing odd about her would be her strangely ivory complexion, almost as if her flesh were made of some sort of pliable bone rather than simple skin.

It would seem the Nexus has gained another Castaway.

Conscious thought tickled at the edge of her mind, vague, half-formed memories. The battle. The weapon. What she had been sure would be her death.

She felt exposed. Small. Diminished. Less.

The choir of voices in harmony, the legion that was her self, was smaller. Vastly smaller. Whatever the horrible weapon had been, that devouring hole in the sky itself, had left her ravaged. Crippled. There was no telling how much of herself had been eradicated. At least not until she could open her eyes and gain her bearings. Just just had to stand up...

Her body, however, seemed to have other ideas. An attempt to move was met with pain and a hissing intake of breath. With that breath she expected the familiar sensation of caustic, toxic gas burning at her insides as she struggled to neutralize it, but instead...

Instead she tasted only clean air.

How long had it been since she last tasted clean air?

With a groan and some effort she pushed herself upright, rubbing her hands over herself. She felt... soft. Weak. What had that awful weapon done to her? The sensation of alien feelings only grew when she finally opened her vibrantly orange eyes. No... no this was wrong. This couldn't be right. She was one of those things. One of those soft, mewling, scurrying, poison-breathing things.

"What did it do to me!" she shrieked as she began tugging at her own pliable flesh. "What did that thing do to my beautiful body?"

In her hysterics the woman hadn't noticed Reelshka yet.

A voice not at all her own.

If she had been thinking the strangeness of talking would have already struck her. There hadn't ever been a need to talk. She was legion. She had only her self and others. And communing with others was pointless. They weren't her. But, caught up as she was in the moment, the alien actions taken by her alien body seemed natural and she didn't think to question them.

She hissed through her teeth at the tiny, mewling thing that was glubbing at her. She had seen the humans up close before when she was small, when she was scattered across ten thousand bodies. But this creature wasn't a human. It was something altogether different. It was an unknown. And she knew well enough that the unknown was dangerous.

Quite in spite of the creature's insistence to the contrary.

It was strange that she understood it, but she didn't question this, either.

"There's always danger. Even if it's just the poisoned air eroding us from the inside," she said. It felt like the right thing to say, even if she couldn't feel the poison eating her anymore. "I'm human. And you aren't. Why?"

Mother and father.

She knows what those words mean, somehow, in a vague sense. Creatures that communed without being one. Things giving rise to more things. Discordant, without unity. Alone in themselves. She had tried to grasp the idea of absolute aloneness, the idea of a single voice railing against the uncaring Cosmos rather than a choir in harmony. But the idea was just so... alien. She imagined that they must be perpetually lonely without the fellowship of a vast self.

Maybe that's why they huddled together for protection.

They couldn't hold fellowship with themselves, so the held fellowship with others.

Wrong. Perverse. Alien. Unnatural.

And yet...

Wasn't that what she was doing even now, by speaking to this other?

"Banished. I was banished. And diminished. And..." she paused, looking over her own disgusting, soft flesh. She felt almost compelled to rip it off in hopes of finding something right under it. "And changed."

Being social with others hasn't ever been high on her list of priorities. Others are a source of danger. Or a source of food. Never a source of fellowship. Fellowship only came from herself. But... her self seems so quiet, now. She can still hear the choir, but it's dulled and muddled and blended together. Her voices sound more like a voice. And that disturbs her deeply.

"You did nothing wrong. You weren't the others that did this to me," she replies, her face contorting as if it hadn't the slightest idea how to properly represent the emotions roiling inside her. Help from an other... she should be shunning this, but again, she didn't question it. Not as much as she should have. Slowly she gathered herself to her feet, shaky and unsure. Her balance was all wrong. This body's shape had a few superficial resemblances to her own, but it was wrong. Alien. It felt sluggish and congealed, like a metastasized tumor that refused to heed her song of self. It moved when she willed it, but it didn't move as she willed it.

This frightened her.

Terrified her.

Would she be trapped in this body?

Would she be a prisoner as it rotted out from under her?

Would she simply... stop being?

She didn't look dangerous. Just confused and dismayed. And naked. That wasn't precluding any kind of weird magical powers, of course. One never knows with the Nexus...

After a moment's hesitation the woman began to follow. Because... forests were no place to talk? There were specific places to talk? This puzzled her. No doubt there were many rules for talking with others she didn't know about. After all, she hadn't ever done it before. As she walked she winced every now and again from stones or sticks poking her in the soles of her soft, fleshy feet. It was just another reminder of how wrong this frail body was.

A bubble of gnawing anxiety began welling up inside her. This body was so fragile, what if it were destroyed? There would be nothing left of her. As far as she knew she was the last fragment of herself in the vast, uncaring Cosmos. She would be gone. Extinct. The feeling of exposure and vulnerability grew all the more pronounced with each biting step.

She did her best to banish the rebellious thoughts and focus on something else.

"That other," she began, pointing at the small mewling thing the larger other thing was carrying. "Did you make her with... the help of another? She's only half-you?"

Dimorphic sexes were another thing on a long list of things that she had trouble understanding. She understood though, in a vague and nebulous fashion, that two different others would come together to make a new other. It seemed better to her to just take an other's lifesong and use what verses of it one could. But maybe these things couldn't do that? Maybe that's why they were so congealed and calcified, so cut off from each other.

"He," she repeated the word aloud. "And... you couldn't just make more of yourself? You had to make an other?"

This was important.

If they had to partake in this perversity then that was somehow less offensive. Less an affront to nature. It was just a new nature that she had never encountered before finding herself displaced in time. The world changed. She knew that. She had watched it change for so long before falling into her long slumber.

Then a question. How was she to answer a question like that?

"I... am me. I never needed a name. But if I must fellowship with others then... I need one... yes?"

A name.

A thing that others would call her self. Something that was her and not any other. Something that made her unique in this alien, hostile world of things and poisoned air. Her voice, her lifesong, her choir, it rose up in her mind and briefly crystallized the muddled haze into clarity. A name. Her name.

Well of course making more of one's self is pleasurable. Even if it's only half of one's self. Giving a species a carrot to encourage them to reproduce is a good way to make sure they don't go extinct.

Also, it might be a good idea to get her some clothing. Unless no one would mind her wandering around naked? That'll probably confuse her, too. But she has already reserved herself to the fact that there's a great deal about fellowshiping with others that she doesn't understand. Though in spite of this she watches everything curiously. She has, of course, seen the homes of tiny others before. In those times when her self was scattered across many smaller bodies she had seen them, devoured them, was killed by them. But they were others. She didn't fellowship with others.

Unlike now.

Would she be trapped like this, forced to make others that were only half her so that at least some part of her self would survive?

It was a horrifying idea.

A tiny jeep covered with things. That talks. Somehow.

Now she's confused. Her experience fellowshipping with others is fairly tentative and doesn't include talking tiny jeeps. The jeep wheels away, then closer. One of its arms unfolds and produces a stethocsope, which is draped over a microphone and then held up towards Choir's chest to listen to her breathing.

Her choir sounded less like a harmony and more monotonous to her, now. But she didn't voice it to these others like that. She was sure they wouldn't understand. They couldn't understand. They were too different, too alien. They had no context for what it was like to be her before she was warped by that horrible weapon.

"I just want to be my self again. I don't want to die like this. I don't want my self to go extinct."

Then the other holds out... something... at her.

She looked at it. Flimsy. Of a rather bland color. Like a skin flayed off something, but not. What was it for? Was it some ritual she wasn't aware of? There was so much involving fellowshiping with others that she didn't grasp.

After whirling back and forth a short distance in a sort of nod to Reelshka, the not-a-toy turns its attention back to Choir.

"Can you identify the realm you were banished from? It is likely that a majority of your symptoms are due to having what is simply referred to as a body, specifically, a living human body which exists in three full spatial and one partial temporal dimension."
Her speech is consistent with bound minds attempting to explain their bodies, although her command of language is oddly fluent despite the lack of context.

"There is little danger of your self becoming extinct in the near future. The current shell you inhabit has a limited lifespan, but its time is relatively long, and will almost certainly last long enough to restore you."

"The item being offered to you is referred to as a 'medical gown', an instantiation of the 'clothing' type. It is used for temperature regulation, partial concealment, and light protection of the body. You may wear it if you wish...I can assist if its shapeform is unfamiliar to you in a degree precluding its unassisted use."

The poor thing seems rather lost.

"If it will help you communicate, you should know that this unit is only a part of myself, and is superior in several ways to the human form you currently possess. Alternate: I am also outside of my native realm, although I am a voluntary visitor, and not a product of banishment."

I survived my battle against the King at his strongest, and there is none stronger. But he is dead and he had no equal. The humans used a new weapon, not like the other ones. It didn't freeze or explode or pierce or cut or burn. It threw a patch of blackness at me so dark that it was painful to look at. I felt it ripping my self apart. I could feel my bodies dying. And then when I had only a few bodies left I was here and I was human," Choir recounted, her face once again contorting with emotions uncertain of how to shape her expression. "That blackness did something terrible to me. I don't want to be human. I want to be my self again."

She paused, considering.

"I've always had bodies. Many, many bodies. Sometimes I let my bodies scatter to forage for food. Sometimes I brought my bodies together to fight or hunt. But now... I think I only have [i]one body. Having only one body makes me feel very vulnerable. It's a large body..." she continued, rubbing one hand against the other. "But humans are so fragile. Even if they can breath poison without being hurt. I don't like it. It doesn't feel right."

Suddenly she gasped, eyes widening at some horrible truth suddenly dawned on her. Something so incredibly simple and yet so totally alien that she hadn't ever considered such a thing before. "I can still think... I only have one body, but I can still think. When I have fewer bodies together thinking becomes harder... I always assumed that since humans only had one body they couldn't... ...can they? Can humans think?"

When the machine spoke of the 'medical gown' Choir hesitantly picked it up to examine it. Smell it, eye it, lick it. Finally she settled on draping it over her back like a cape. Though at the mention that the machine was only a fragment something not altogether different from a hopeful smile tugged at her face. "You have many bodies, too? You're like me? I've only ever found one other like me, many bodies and a choir of voices. But it was discordant and vile. Unnatural and perverted and full of deadly poison. I tried to exterminate it, but it was resilient like I am. Or... like I was..."

The machine listens patiently to her explanation, trying to think of what she could have been. At the mention of breathing poison, all the previous models leave its mind and it starts afresh, finally admitting that it doesn't know. A new experience!

It folds its arms back up as it answers. "Affirm: humans can think. They are in fact renowned for their exceptional ability to think, among singular animals. A great deal of thinking capability is concentrated in the organ known as the brain, which can equal several lesser creatures combined in cognition."

The machine backs away a half turn of its wheels, shaking back and forth, negative. "I believe that I am more similar to a human than I am to you, but I do possess similarities to you that they lack. You appear to be a colony organism, whereas I am a hive. However, there are others in this realm of existence more similar to your described means of existence. I know of one whose component bodies are each semi-distinct humans."

"Allow me to clarify, the garment is meant to be placed on the opposite side of your body. Did the humans have a name for what you were? It may be familiar to us and allow us to help you return."

Is that... guilt she's feeling at having killed so many humans? She never felt guilt before over her actions. But then, she had been sure that humans weren't aware since they only had a single body. When she had a single body she couldn't think, and so it stood to reason that humans were the same. By the same token, she had tried to kill that disgusting toxic abomination even though she was sure it was aware. But she had a good reason for that.

Guilt...

It had to be because of the human body. It was warping her thoughts.

"Colony and... hive? I don't understand the difference. Those words mean the same thing, don't they?" she asked, though she wasn't sure how she knew this. Simply that she did. She simply knew a great deal of language were before she knew none. Her thoughts had been a great deal more visceral before, she recalled. Thoughts of sensations and images and scents. Thoughts of actions. But now her thoughts were words. So many words were pouring out of her mind. Including the words that the humans screamed when her smaller bodies slew them.

"Destroyer. They called me destroyer."

She fiddled with the garment until she managed to cover herself with it. It seemed silly, but thinking back the humans she had seen always covered themselves with such things. She hadn't ever understood the purpose of it.

"I was told I needed a name by... Reelshka... I never had a name before, so I picked one. Choir. Call me Choir, because that's what I am. Or was... many voices in harmony to make a whole. I can still hear my song, but it's muddled and monotonous now."

The patient appears upset. This may have been a difficult revelation for it. Hopefully it doesn't try to reinterpret humanity all at once, that would likely tax it severly. Besides, thinking can be dangerous when one lacks as much information as this one apparently does.

"There are subtle detinctions in the words; a colony is gestalt, whereas the hive is an extension of certain of its parts." The machine is fairly sure of the difference, having participated in several modes of thought. Why, it once had only a single body itself. That was not a good time, although not because it couldn't think.

Destroyer. Apparently a description of Choir's action-state relative to the humans. But it could also refer to one of at least 5 mythological figures known to it, a classification of aquatic war vessel, several types of aircraft, spacecraft, fighting machine, and military units, a type of autonomous vehicle not known to have any thought, several musical groups, sports teams, and low-importance 'supervillains'. Most of these can be immediately discounted for relevance. Even the one example of a voracious dangerous many-bodied entity does not seem to match the patient. "Choir. As it is customary for introductions to be relatively symmetric, I am called 'Kestrel', and this is 'Andy'. Are you sure that the song has changed, and not your perceptions of it?" It inquires cautiously.

A gestalt, many bodies and many voices forming a single choir. As opposed to a single voice with many bodies. That... makes sense. When disharmony arose amongst her voices she always simply brought those collections of bodies together in communion. Thoughts and memories became one. Harmony was reached and the song of her self continued.

Her song...

Was it really different?

Or did her human thoughts simply make her hear it differently?

That idea was... troubling...

"I'm not sure... I've never thought like a human before," she admitted. The idea that humans could think with only a single body still disturbed her. Because of their... brain? Which organ was the brain? She had found many organs when she first took the humans she had killed apart. It had been a surprise then, an honest surprise. She had expected the humans to disperse into many bodies like she did when they were injured. She had hoped that she would be able to take communion with them, to share their thoughts, their voices, their life song. She had hoped to find something like herself. But all she had found were congealed organs that couldn't change, bodies bound in a single shape that had no thoughts of their own. Not even small, simple thoughts.

It was why she was sure they couldn't think. They only acted like they could think.

But... she had been wrong.

What else had she been wrong about?

"Is there a way to make me right again... Kestrel?" she asked. She spoke the name only tentatively, as though afraid that she might break some unknown rule of fellowshipping with others.

Success. Choir considers the question without anger. With reasonable concern instead; it is a disturbing thought, that a change of perspective could alter the relative quality of something, so much worse if that thing is part of oneself. What would its own processes seem like from Choir's native perspective?

"It is not in my immediate power to make you right, but I believe we can accomplish it. It is likely possible to end or reverse your banishment. However, the machine and the weapon it used to banish you are both unknown to me; it will likely not be an easy process. There is unfortunately a considerable chance that you have none of your original bodies remaining alive, and that they would not be restored by the ending of your banishment." It speaks warmly, hoping to reaffirm her uncertainty. Choir's mere existence is interesting; in its own region of existence, swarm intellects even vaguely like the one described were considered, but never achieved. Even hives were not properly implemented before it had remade itself.
"Even in that regrettable case, there will be ways to restore you to something like, if not exactly the same as, you were before."

It pauses briefly to consider the possibility that Choir is delusional. This would be the most reasonable conclusion on any other world, but there are enough curious but true beings here that Kestrel takes her at her word.

"Could you describe your bodies? Size, shape, composition, other relevant information. Relative to humans if necessary."

The notion that her original bodies may all be extinct, leaving her only with a horrid, congealed human form, filled Choir with a deep sense of sorrow. She had hope that she would be right again, but she wasn't sure how well founded that hope was.

"But if I can still hear my song, even if it's muddled, maybe there is something of my bodies left in this one? Just... stuck," Choir reasoned. "Maybe there's a way to allow them to become plastic again?"

If that were the case, if her bodies are still with her and simply have their voices muted and driven into a state of slumber, then maybe if she could wake them... If she could wake them then she would be able to make herself right again. Then she wouldn't need to feel vulnerable and threatened. She could begin growing again.

"My bodies are very small," Choir recounted. "When I have many bodies together they're too small to see the individuals. I'm... not sure what they look like. I've never seen them since individual bodies can't see well. They foraged for food and they spawned more bodies. But when I brought them together, when there were enough for them to gain a voice, I could see them. Hard shelled and red. And... eight. I always made eight limbs regardless of the greatness of the voice. I'm not sure why. It felt right. And a tail. With cerci at the end like a pincer."

She focused hard, trying her best to remember details.

"I learned from the lifesong of others I ate. I learned new ways to join my bodies together. To make voices that sang louder and clearer for a beautiful choir of self."

A new question presents itself: should they be helping Choir? An intelligent, alien super-predator, without understanding of how other beings exist, apparently absorbing patterns or chractersistics from its prey. With replicating components of a size beneath the visual range; it is amazing that the humans defeated her, as described.

But she's so adorably clueless. "It is possible. Could the weapon have forced your bodies into this human shape?" The machine rolls along a bit, collecting lenses and scopes before attempting to look at Choir more closely.
"What will you do once you are back?"

"I don't know," Choir admitted. "I felt it ripping my voices apart and killing my bodies. I... don't think it did this to me. Something else did? Maybe whatever brought me here?"

She paused to consider that, then slowly nodded.

"Yes... I don't think the black weapon was supposed to send me somewhere else. It was supposed to make me extinct. Something else did this to me. Something else... saved me. But I don't know why."

Were Choir aware of the inclination of the Nexus to grab strange things (and occasionally cram them into a human shape) she would be significantly more certain about this explanation.

A closer look reveals something curious. All the tissue that would be derived from ectoderm, skin and nails and neurons, isn't human at all. Rather, it's a collection of innumerable discrete organisms mimicking human skin tissue. For whatever odd reason any other part of her body tested, such as a blood sample, could come back irrefutably human. But skin and brain and nerves? All of those are colony organisms locked into a single configuration. It's probably worth noting that they aren't single-celled, though they are quite small, each falling below the millimeter length range.

"What... would I do?" Choir echoed. That question confused her. What does anyone do? "I would forage for food and make more bodies. I would grow and learn new lifesongs to improve myself. What else does one do?"

Other portions of your body are actually human; one third of you is composed of your own bodies, the other two thirds are a human scaffold. The fact that you arrived here may have been the work of the Nexus itself. Clarification: The Nexus is the term for this region of reality."

The car hurries off to replace the lenses after its looks and scans.

"Each being has a reason for existing. Self-improvement is only one of them. Am I taken to understand that there were many beings like yourself, with their own songs, in addition to human-pattern organisms?"

"They've been congealed and now they're slumbering?" Choir reasoned. "If my bodies are slumbering I need to wake them up. I'll need food. And a place without any toxic air."

Hope!

That must be hope she felt. Or at least that's what her mind called it now that it was full of words.

"When my kind awoke we were scattered and discordant. But then we started gathering our bodies together and singing the same songs. We would meet and take communion with each other, combining our bodies and voices into a new, greater song. Our thoughts became bigger as our bodies grew together. Eventually we became me. I'm the sum of the thoughts of my whole kind, our voices lifted up in a single song, in a Choir."

Hence her name.

"That's why I thought the humans didn't think. When I tried taking communion and joining their bodies with mine I only found flesh. They didn't have a voice or thoughts or memories to partake in. There was only meat. How would meat think and remember and sing?"

"What is it that you eat and breathe? As you likely know, this is non-toxic to humans and many other lifeforms."

At this point the machine laughs, as cold and mechanical a sound as all its voice.

"You are also flesh. Your bodies are tiny creatures little different from humans conceptually, although you have a much different size and shape. Thought and song derive from an arrangement, not from the material used to make it. Humans have meat, you have meatless cell-bodies, I have metal, but we all sing."

"I don't breath," Choir states simply. "But this body does. It feels strange, filling my insides with poison... But humans need it to live, don't they? The poison? I remember when I destroyed it so it wouldn't burn me they started gasping and writhing, then they went to sleep and died. When my bodies are woken up the human parts of this body will die. I hope that doesn't hurt..."

She remembers quite vividly the humans dying. How they struggled uselessly. Those that were too close dissolved. She had tried to take communion with them, but their huge, congealed bodies wouldn't join with her. So she had to simply eat their flesh instead. It made her sad now, remembering it. It would have been so much better if she had been able to join their voices with her own. She was sure they knew things and thought thoughts that she never knew nor thought.

"Food is... well... There are different kinds of food. There's flesh and vegetation. I need those. But I need rocks, too. Special rocks that are always warm to the touch and make me feel warm inside. The humans always hid them within great stone towers and under the earth and they fought fiercely to protect them. I'm not sure if the humans eat them, too. I saw them eating flesh and vegetation, but I never saw them eating the special rocks. I never found any inside them, either. Only sealed away deep and hidden. If I don't eat enough rocks my bodies begin to grow weary and fall asleep."

She thought about that. About the elaborate buildings the rocks were inside, deep underground and submerged in water that glowed like the King's fierce flames. Why did the humans go to so much trouble to protect the rocks if they didn't eat them? Was it just to keep them from her out of spite?

"Perhaps provisions could be made for its survival. It would likely cause you pain if you did not separate from it immediately upon waking, as your bodies serve as the sensory system for it." The machine is having trouble finding words to properly describe Choir's mode of life.

"Interesting. You are a radiotroph, and an obligate anaerobe. We have not previously encountered such a combination." How did Choir's type come to exist, especially in a world where it can coexist with humans? From all it can imagine, she should live only deep underground. But then, other worldplanes needn't conform to its models.

"Just as oxygen, the part of air that humans need, is poisonous to you, so are the rocks poisonous to them. Being near to them causes damage to their bodies. They can disrupt my thoughts as well, although my body will not be permanently harmed by the experience. However, they are very useful. The poisonous energies can be converted and used to power machines, or concentrated for use as a weapon. My predecessors used similar rocks in order to fly."

She didn't want to feel pain, but if pain was necessary to wake up her bodies again then she would endured it. She had to endure it. She couldn't stay like this.

The tiny machine spoke some words to her, words she found herself understanding, though she had no reason to. She had no reason to comprehend any of these words. She hadn't ever communicated with words before. It hadn't ever been necessary. Anarobic. She didn't need oxygen, that horrible burning gas, to survive. Unlike the humans. Radiotroph. She fed on the radiation produced by the special rocks. It seemed strange to her that thing that were toxic to one creature were required for another.

Life was so peculiar.

"You know where to find rocks like those, then?" she asked hopefully. "You'll help me wake my bodies up?"

She paused though, thinking. Once she was awake again she would be dangerous to the humans. Everything she touched became poison to them. And if she didn't do that the very air would be poison to her. She was small and weak. The humans would try to drive her to extinction if they thought she was a threat to them, she was sure of that. She would do the same. Maybe...

The machine whirrs noncommitally, unsure of how to proceed.

"As for keeping ocygen away, it could be effected by staying inside some sort of barrier, such as a pressure suit built to your eight-legged shape, or by repelling it with magnetic fields. Both would require some sort of machinery. It may also be possible using what is called 'magic', or be specializing some of your bodies to hold or repel it, if that were possible. That was a good question.

How did she destroy it?

Choir had a dim understanding that her bodies weren't able to do this originally. They had learned it from... something. Something that she had made part of herself while her thoughts were still very small and scattered. Maybe if she described what happened the machine would understand? That seemed to work thus far.

"I make something that takes the poison out of the air and combines it with water. They become something new that looks like water, but has a sharp smell. Others dissolve and sizzle when it touches them, but it doesn't harm me. I usually foraged on the dissolved remains," Choir recounted. "The... oxygen... doesn't hurt my bodies when they're asleep. But they need to be awake for me to feed, so I have to remove all the oxygen from my surroundings. But the liquid that results kills everything else."

She paused to consider the various suggestions. "A suit? Like... a second shell to wear around my self? How would I be able to grow inside something like that?"

Choir had many answers now, many explanations. She had an idea of what she needed to do. What she needed to find.

"I want to wake up my bodies as soon as I can. Who can help me find the food I need? I'm sure there's none nearby. I would be able to smell its warmth on the air. I need someone who can show me where I need to search."

She paused for a time as another thought cross her mind.

If Kestrel could properly feel fear, that might be terrifying. Or it might have lived in a relatively small area of water, perhaps a pond or swamp. The sentence is ambiguous.

"You should see, once you grow free, whether you can live again in the water; it would keep you safely isolated from oxygen and most humans who could pose a danger."

Choir was, for the record, 'born' in a bay. That portion of the bay was inundated with fill and built on top of as a result of a nearby city's explosive and continual growth. Filling in the bay had prompted her to find ways to survive on land and ran afoul with the humans who didn't care for her sterilizing everything she touched. Of course, she lacks the vocabulary and context to properly explain all of this. While she's intelligent, her grasp of how the world works is tentative.

"I can still live in the water," Choir confirmed. "I feel safe in the water. It's where I was born, I think. I began in the water. I only moved to the land because I was forced to."

The further explanation only continues to build her hope that she would be right again soon. "If there are rocks that I won't have to fight for then I want those," Choir reasoned. "That's how it was when I was still scattered and my thoughts were small. There was plenty of food and there were no others who fought me for it. I would rather prefer to live and grow without having to fight the humans if I can. Their weapons are unpleasant."

She could almost still feel the sensation of her bodies being torn apart.

"Thank you, Reelshka. Choir intends to set out to find certain radioactive minerals that we believe will allow her to return to her preferred state. Are there any members possessed of a more widely-applicable locomotion system who might accompany her?" If one has not previously seen a junco in a bowler hat double-take, one has now.

Tom peers downwards. Tilts his head.

Or maybe it is in a strange way. Her parents intended to raise her as a deranged cultist, after all.

After Khyli has jotted down a mental note to research that bear creature that is following Cheasadh around so that she can be sure that it won't maul anyone, Khyli steps out of the room for a second. She returns with a tray of hot food and cold drinks which she attempts to set atop a small wooden table she conjured up out of thin air.

No, Khyli, that's not something to worry about. After all, life teaches us that bears of any type that doesn't wanna get you in your sleep are the only natural predator of nightmare demons.

It took several false starts, but eventually Choir managed to get her new clothing on.

The whole process baffled her.

Were humans really so fragile that they had to wrap themselves with false skins? Were they really so poor at thermoregulation?

Choir couldn't imagine how a race like theirs had managed to survive for so long.

"Then... what am I to do while I wait?" Choir asked. Concern had begun creeping into her tone. While she had been assured that she wouldn't die here she couldn't find herself trusting this weak, frail, singular body. She couldn't imagine how these creatures functioned knowing that they could become extinct at any moment.

She idly glanced off in the direction of two others that had just come and gone.

She had to grow accustomed to have a singular body, at least for a time. It made her uncomfortable, but it was something that had to be done. She opened her mouth to speak to the others, but a strange gurgling sound accompanied by a fluttering feeling came from her abdomen. She turned her attention to it quickly, a look of vague horror creeping across her face. This was it, she was sure. She could already feel an awful twisting sensation inside her. It couldn't possibly be something good.

On one hand, she might upset Celica if she recommends that Celica's nightmares are, as a matter of fact, something to worry about because Cheasadh is consorting with something evil, but, on the other hand, if she says nothing, the child could fall prey to whatever unholy creature she is somehow interacting with...

No, this...this matter is not suitable for discussion during breakfast.

Khyli peacefully articulates. There is no judgment in her tone. She is not about to chastise Cheasadh or anything of the sort. If anything, Khyli seems to sympathize with Cheasadh.

The first step is to evaluate the situation. She must know the enemy if she is to break the hold it has on this child.

"But that is no fault of her's. She is merely a child. Do not be too stern with her."

Only now does Khyli speak to Cheasadh directly. Her tone is almost motherly. Almost.

This cabin needs a wood name.

Justin has arrived after a long hiatus from hanging around GLoG, which is sad, because literally all his friends live here.

He feels as awkward as he looks, standing at the cabin door. When he last came to this door it lead to a... a weird situation. That weird situation has left his relationship up in the air, so he's come here to "catch it" to extend the metaphor.

His hand goes up and knocks gently at the door. He silently snickers at himself. He's recently realized that he's weirdly open and friendly with the people he doesn't care about, and horribly awkward with people he does. If he didn't care what Alyca thought of him, he'd probably have come in through a window.

[<Redacted> Cabin]

It's advantageous for Justin, then, that he does care about one of the the inhabitants of this cabin! It takes Alyca and Miriah a couple of minutes to answer the door. They weren't expecting a visitor today; if Justin had broken into the cabin via one of the closed and locked windows, he would be liable to find himself staring down the business end of one of those easily concealable semi-automatic pistols the girls are ever so fond of. The super secret spies simply are not willing to drop their guard so soon after one of them was nearly terminated in the invisible war that they so valiantly wage (except on weekends and holidays).

When Miriah does finally answer the door, it will immediately be crystal clear to Justin what she was up to when he first rapped upon her cabin's door. Glistening beads of hot water trickle down strands of her wet hair. They slowly but steadily drip down onto her solid black tank top. She models a pair of bright red sweatpants and comfortable black slippers with no socks.

She welcomes Justin to her home by swiftly stepping outside and carefully closing the door behind her as quietly as a mouse.

"After Alyca was blasted out of the back of that VTOL we were traveling in, she tried to dive into a hovercraft. She succeeded in that, but she failed to buckle up before the tank hit the pavement. She reported that she was attempting to switch the mode of the tank while the user identity verification program was running so that her landing would be cushioned by a sequence of steady and rapid pulses from the repulsors on the bottom of the tank."

"The repulsors broke her fall, but the mode switch wasn't activated quickly enough to be 100% effective."

"The force that the repulsors didn't negate was absorbed by her legs. She was in critical condition when she was recovered. Thanks to her cranial augmentations, she only just survived the impact."

It took Choir some time to realize that the other was speaking at her.

That's a thing she still had trouble with. The concept that others would speak to her. It was growing more... comfortable with time. More natural. But a not inconsiderable part of her was still repulsed by it. Others were dangerous. Or food. She had her self. That was all she ever needed.

But now...

"Work?" she asked. She hadn't ever heard that word before. But she knew it. Ideas and concepts and other words lit up in her mind when she thought it. Work. It was a thing one did to make one's environment better. Things one did to survive. But there was more to it than that. It also meant... working for others. Working for common good, like she worked for her self. But not for her self. For...

"No," Choir concluded, as much for her own understanding as for the question. "I was banished here. And... changed. The others here said they would help me become myself again."

Hopefully soon. The fear of extinction still ate at the edge of her mind.

This was one of the problems with speaking to others.

Every time she met a new other she had to explain all these things to them all over again.

It was...

Things were so much simpler when it was just her self who she spoke to.

But now? Everything is so muddled and confusing.
