Optimizing the Vampire

Exactly what the title says. I'm building a level 21 character, 32 pt buy, free LA. What are good things to look at? (note that I can use any race, but that LA won't be free, just the template LA is)

By "Free LA" do you mean just the vampire LA is free or ALL template LA is free?

Because if it is all template LA is free than you can stack infinite evolved undead templates (Libris Mortis) and have infinite strength, charisma and natural armor.


Assuming you can't do that, http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20021018a is a good tool as it negates a lot of the weaknesses and adds just bonuses.


Now, for classes. I normally wouldn't suggest this as its overpowered but Thrallherd, http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/thrallherd.htm might be a good choice and somewhat thematic. In an epic game like this the leadership won't be AS much of a problem as it doesn't ever progress to epic leadership and also it's somewhat cool as you and your spawn don't even need to hunt for your drink's. Your drinks come to you :smalltongue:

Entry could be either Psion, Wilder or STP Erudite. I would suggest Psion unless you really want to go pure charisma (Then go wilder) or if you want to break everything (Then go STP erudite).

Sorry, I guess that could've been more clear. I get the vampire LA for free, and I could probably get it for free from the vampire lord also. But I think that infinite evolved undead wouldn't go over well haha Also, I don't know psionics very well...are there other good options, or should I learn psionics?

Oh there are ton of other options, I just offered one that I thought was an interesting idea.

What exactly do you want to do with this character? A caster? A minionmancer necromancer? A melee bruiser? An assassin?

The Vampire Template can be kinda used for every kind of build due to its nice stat adjustments and abilities.

I honestly don't have a preference...I'm just playing an epic level vampire campaign, so I can be whatever I want, there are enough players I don't *need* to be any specific thing.

EDIT: I guess maybe I could've had a clearer direction......should I come back after making a decision?

There's a fairly good vampire PrC called the Lifedrinker (http://dndtools.eu/classes/lifedrinker/) in the BoVD if that's allowed. Sadly, it's non-casting, but if you can find some way to get around that, it's got some pretty nasty options.

It's beyond trivial to get arbitrarily powerful minions (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?327984-3-5-Vampire-shenanigans) as a vampire.
