View Full Version : 3rd Ed Build Kobold mounting Dire Weasel (ranger?)

Hello,
I have some questions about an optimization for a character in a Kobold campaign.

I am gonna play into a full kobold fellowship, from the 1st level.
I would like to play a kobold riding a weasel, and i was wondering if it would be better to make a archer-like or a charging-like rider.
I'm not used to play a distance ranger, so I don't really know about the penalty of shooting arrow while riding a mount, maybe it would be too much of a handicap.
I was also thinking about doing a mounted-charging kobold (paladin, or others), because of the size of the weasel, it could be used in a dungeon for instance.

Our GM is willing to let us use all official books of the 3.5, including the Tome of Battle, Dragon Magic, Races of the Dragon, Draconomicon and is using the Races of the Dragon Web Enhancement.

Were I running the character, I'd definitly go ranged and work on mounted combat feats.

Lvl 1 - Ranger -1
Lvl 2 - Fighter -1
Lvl 3 - Ranger -2
Lvl 4 - Fighter -2

Go for Mounted Combat/Mounted Archery early. This lets you fight better at range.

After a few levels you should be good for charging. With Ranger in there, you can even get an animal cohort for your mount!

A lance would be hard to pass up with its additional damage, and it's (somewhat less) feat intensive than ranged combat.

I only took him to 15th level, because I wanted to give him a little room to grow in my upcoming campaign. We have assigned stats of 12,13,14,16,16,18, allocated as follows...

Wow WeaselGuy, that is a really interesting character progression, I'm gonna do some research and ask for my gm about the class Halfling Outrider, to see if he is willing to make it available for the Kobold.
Damn that sounds exciting !

it actually says in the halfling outrider description, under adaptation, that it can be used to exemplify any racial mounted class such as lizard riding elves, worg riding goblins, etc, etc. best of luck to ya!

Though I agree with WeaselGuy on Wild Plains Outrider and Halfling Kobold Outrider, I'd at least take 1 level of Beastmaster and the Natural Bond feat. Both are from Complete Adventurer.

Going into the late game , you m ay want to switch your mount to something that can eventually fly.


Am going to say dragonrider , with a late game feat of dragon cohort
