I am looking for a free software that you can use to create landscapes, place cities, note information ect. I have tried google but to no avail. If it can double as a decent dungeon maker then that works as well.

you'll honestly be quite hard-pressed to find this kind of software for free, but there are quite a few decent programs out there that don't cost too much and are definitely worth it. Dundjinni is a pretty popular one.

Well, in terms of GENERATORS, there's a whole slew of stuff on Donjon (http://donjon.bin.sh/), including world and dungeon generators. There's also Dave's mapper (http://davesmapper.com/) for tile based dungeon generation. Unfortunately, both of those are generators, so you don't really get individual feature placement, though you can set the initial values and, in the case of Dave's mapper, rearrange, lock, and rotate tiles.

It's not free but Campaign Cartographer is a very powerful program for large area maps, definitely look into it!
