Optimization wise? Wizards. Always wizards. Anything besides blaster or illusionist.

we already have a 10th lvl half-amethyst dragon wizard and a 13th lvl halfling rogue and i have a total of 13 levels, but i can hire rogues, sorcerers, bards and wizards along with all divine casters

You have a 10th level wizard in the party, but you can get an 11th level wizard cohort because he took an unnecessary level adjustment. Seriously, he could should have gradually gained half-dragon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20030912a) (not in uninterrupted succession (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20030824a)) to go Half-Dragon 1/ Wizard 3, buy off the +1 LA (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm), gain the second level of half-dragon, three more wizard/PrC levels, buy off that +1 LA, gain the third level of half-dragon, three more wizard/PrC levels, and then buy off that point of LA. That ends up at 9th level without any level adjustment and works with any classes except racial HD. You end up 18,000 xp behind, in a 13th level party that's only one and a half levels and he would have been gaining more xp per encounter starting at 4th level so he should have actually caught back up and been the same level as the rest of the party by now!

Get a Conjurer and follow this guide (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=394).

Edit: On second thought, make an Illumian Beguiler 1/ Wizard 4/ Ultimate Magus (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?296176-Ultimate-Magus-Is-it-any-good#4) 6 cohort, and use everything I recommended in that linked post.

Get an Archivist (Divine Wizard from Heroes of Horror) of Boccob. Stat the Archivist out as a "Knows Everything" Librarian.

Archivist (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20051007a&page=3) is indeed a good choice, especially since they get their best class feature at 11th level. Note they can learn any divine spell in the game (http://community.wizards.com/forum/previous-editions-character-optimization/threads/1023251).

Depends on what optimization level your group is at. At higher levels I would suggest either an Artificer or Midgard Dwarf for an endless supply of magical items. Magic items make the whole party better!

At lower levels of optimization I would probably grab dragon fire inspiration bard as a cohort to make the party awesome, and at very low levels probably a Marshal (since their best features are stacked at level 1.)

don't take anything that makes another player feel useless. its a **** move.

A really small Savant... Have him focus in riding and various skills he can assist within the range. Free's up your skills, he has Knowledge [All] as a class feature at maximum ranks, assists others with their skills, and 1/round potentially ignore a attack through ride optimization... Possibly more [I don't follow ride].
And you get the occasional useless spell that turned out to be not so useless because you needed it.

May not be the most OP, but still very useful, and not just for you. You've just become the parties scout and turn the entire party into scouts...

Keep in mind that, unless this is explicitly a high-power game, following many of the suggestions in this thread run the risk of getting the DMG thrown at you by the DM, and possibly other players as well.

If it's a casual, low-optimization type game, then take something that looks cool and does something nobody else in the party can.

if teh party has no healer then just get the pre built healer cleric in the phb2 i believe. helps the whole party, is powerful. but takes a back seat and your DM will not care.

he prepares buffs and healing spells and spontaneous cures.

Agreed. This is why I suggested a Librarian of Boccob.
