So I’m compiling a list of how many spells each spell list has by level and I was playing around with the spreadsheet. An observation:

By sheer number of spells the top 20 spell lists are:

1. Sorcerer 1872
2. Wizard: 1849
3. Cleric: 1082
4. Druid: 798
5. Bard: 538

Now here’s where it gets interesting. If you count ONLY the Individual Schools of magic…

6. Wizard (transmutation): 484
7. Wu Jen: 295
8. Wizard (conjuration): 271
9. Wizard (Evocation): 265
10. Ranger: 250
11. Wizard (abjuration): 223
12. Wizard (necromancy): 222
13. Shugenja: 220
14. Paladin: 215
15. Shaman: 195
16. Wizard (Enchantment): 132
17. Assassin: 128
18. Hexblade: 123
19. Wizard (Illusion): 121
20. Wizard (Divination): 112

So, if we look at each individual school of magic for wizards as a separate spell list, Wizard, Sorcerer, and all 8 schools make up 10 of the top 20 spell lists by size.

Now, If we use Sor/wiz as one and DON’T include the Individual schools

1. Sor/Wiz: 1845
2. Cleric:1082
3. Druid: 798
4. Bard: 538
5. Wu Jen: 295
6. Ranger: 250
7. Shugenja: 220
8. Paladin: 213
9. Shaman: 185
10. Assassin: 128
11. Hexblade: 123
12. Beguiler: 111
13. Blackguard: 106
14. Maho-Tsukai: 105
15. Court Herald: 93
16. Vigilante: 90
17. Warmage: 86
18. Dread Necromancer: 86
19. Blighter: 83
20. Duskblade: 73

No point. Just thought I’d share.

So, Beguiler and Dread Necromancer each have fewer spells than any single school of wizard spells?

They definitely cut those lists down...

Also, I hadn't realized how big the gap between transmutation and conjuration was until just now.

I'm not surprised in the least at the disparity between the top 4 and everyone else, bard being so high did surprise me.
That said let's be honest by the time the top 4 have access to all of their spells they have access to roughly 3700 spells anyway.

Did you double count the same spell from multiple sources? Eg Spell Compendium reprints quite a few spells from other books. I think that might narrow the gap between the fixed-list casters and their schools.

Not all spells are created equally, especially in this regard.

Transmutation spells tend to be more specific in their usage, whilst at the other extreme Illusions are more general — especially the Shadow line. This is why I'm more than happy to play an Illusion based Sorcerer — I know all the spells I need. Beguilers benefit from this, but you have to pull some stunts.

You are also ignoring things like domains and Advanced Learning.
