Round 18 hath come:

Initiative 99
Pompey takes the last point of damage from the Assassins' Shuriken
Hilgya neglects to use the Prophecy to Cure Wounds. Read too much Goblins, I guess.

Initiative 20
Yikyik pokes Julia to Distract her. Damsel in Distress prevents the damage but her action is now thoroughly stolen.
Sabine continues to assault the Black Dragon. Life Drain negates the Scales and gives her 1 HP.

Initiative 19
Julia is busy chasing Yikyik and cannot act.

Initiative 18
The Centipede joins the fight and bites the Dragon for 1 damage.

Initiative 12 and 9
Both of Leeky's Tree Servants help to beat up the Dragon

Initiative 6
Leeky chooses to let the others fight and Heals himself.

Initiative 5
The Oracle's Hydra starts to beat up Julia

Initiative 3
Hilgya creates a Sanctuary around her and can't be attacked.

Initiative 2
The Oracle has a malevolent Prophecy against Julia's Missile. Attention Seeker kicks in and grants Julia 2 HP.
Pompey summons reinforcements: Another Centipede for the Wizard.

Not much happened. The Black Dragon was brought a bit closer to extinction, The Oracle continues its feud against Julia and Xykon resurfaces out of his Phylactery. The game continues at a slower pace since the easy target are long gone and the survivors either have defensive ressources or managed to take precautions for this scenario.

The Oracle looks into the future and has a benevolent prophecy for Hilgya to use Cure Wounds

Initiative 16
The Hydra attacks Julia, removing her action with Damsel in Distress and thus protecting her from the malevolent prophecy.

Julia is busy with the Hydra

Yikyik kills off one of the Centipedes
Hilgya Cures Pompey’s wounds and grants him 4 HP

With the death of Black Dragon, there are only 8 player characters left, each one with real chances to win the game. Interestingly, there are various kinds of characters. There is powerhouse Sabine with two strong defense mechanisms and lifegain, there are Leeky and Yikyik who stay alive by disencouraging attackers, there is Xykon who will probably have one to give his phylactery to until the very end, there are the Oracle and Julia with more passive defense mechanisms and finally there are Hilgya and Pompey: Two characters who are rather defenseless on their own but have abilities that make them popular for alliances. It will be interesting to see where and when the next bandwagon will occur.

It's up to you to decide. Please send me your actions until Saturday, 6 AM Eastern. Don't forget to send it extra early if you plan to be away for easter.

Initiative 99
Hilgya uses the Oracle’s Benevolent Prophecy to Cure the Kobold’s Wounds.

Initiative 22
Sabine Drains Yikyik’s Energy. He loses 2 HP and an action. The Combat Reflexes are soaked by Sabine’s damage reduction.

Initiative 15
Yikyik can’t act due to Sabine’s effect.
The Hydra attacks Julia. Damsel in Distress prevents the damage at the cost of Julia’s action.

Initiative 14
Julia is unable to act…again.

Initiative 12
Pompey sends another round of Buff Spells to one of his female friends. This time it is Hilgya’s turn.

Initiative 9
The Centipede runs into Xykon’s Trap and is promptly annihilated. But not before dealing 1 damage to the Lich.

Initiative 7
Leeky’s Tree Servant deals 1 damage to Yikyik and is dealt 1 in return.

Initiative 5
Hilgya joins the attack against Xykon. Her Hammer deals 5 damage and kills him.
With his dying uhm…words, Xykon sends a Symbol of Pain to Julia. It deals 1 damage to Julia but not more.
Leeky chooses a rather non-violent path and heals himself.

Initiative 3
The other Tree Servant exchanges blows with Yikyik as well.
The Oracles sends once again a Benevolent Prophecy to Hilgya for her to cure.

Stuff happened. Yikyik is brought a bit closer to death while Xykon has to retreat to his Soul-Hidey-Place once again. He will choose his new carrier while the others may continue to beat up each other. But with the NPC joining the fray and Hilgya distributing Heals, the game could continue for a while.

Symbol of Pain: (attack) Deals 1 damage to any target and 1 damage at the beginning of each following round until one of them dies or a new target is chosen.

Since Xykon is dead, shouldn't the hurting stop? Or does he have to die permanently?

^Neither I'm afraid, this is just like Pompey and my Poisoned Shuriken - even though I died he still took damage. When that damage ended, that was the last thing that showed I was still in this (apart from the corpses of Teen Goblins, Thor and Trigak)

Yikyik starts coughing with Inactivity Flu again.
The Hydra attacks Julia. Damsel in Distress replaces damage with action stealing.

Initiative 17
Leeky’s Tree Servant attacks the Oracle. Field of Memory Loss kicks in and prevents him from attacking again next round.

Initiative 10
Pompey summons a new set of two Centipedes.
Sabine Life Drains Yikyik, She gains 1 HP and soaks the Kobold’s Combat Reflexes with her Damage Reduction. With her attack, Yikyik dies.

Round 22 begins and we are down to 7 contestants. Five of them are still hovering over 20 HP while Xykon keeps returning and Julia just refuses to take damage. This time she might even be able to take an action at the cost of being able to take damage later on. Meanwhile Sabine acts unusually low, while Xykon's return can't be prevented. It will be interesting to see who will be the next one to be killed terminally.

Well thats not really an exploit... so much as getting Durkon to heal you a ridiculous number of times.

I mean, anyone who Durkon heals ten times is going to be on incredibly high HP. But Durkon and Thor, and "Other people" aren't going to play along unless you give them a real good reason.

I think that in #3, there shouldn't be any NPC limits. The Oracle would never prophesise again! He'd be to busy making his own personal Hydra army!!!!!!

And Silkenfist, Durkon CAN'T be Lawful Good! He is a cleric of THOR, the CHAOTIC GOOD Norse god of thunder! He is NUETRAL GOOD with MANY LAWFUL TENDENCIES and a STRONG SENSE OF HONOR!

Ok there is many a thread throughout this sites history on this sort of thing, but I don't feel like tracking the links. Suffice it to say your wrong, it is said specifically in On the Origin of PC's that Durkon is lawful. Remember that The Giant has said that he reserves the right to change the rules as needed for his story, so while Thor is chaotic good in DnD he doesn't have to be for OOTS. Also The Giant has stated that he thinks of the Thor in OOTS as more like the Thor in the comic books. So in short, Silkenfist is right, Durkon is Lawful Good.

Hmm I guess the oracle was somehow convinced Leeky was still allied with him, unless thats a template prophecy firing up. Doesn't matter either way since Leeky is inactive, but still, I will watch this with interest over the coming rounds.

Slowly the Oracle is worn down, while Xykon can already look forward to yet another stay in the phylactery. It will be interesting to see whether the Lich's undead/dead cycle will actually bring him victory.

Ahh good to see the oracle finally retaliating. Excellent play with the malevolent prophecy as well. If I were the oracle I would try and find an ally at this point, as he's unlikely to survive if he doesn't. Unfortunately he seems to have prevented that with a fairly unprovoked attack on Pompey with his hydra.

Focus your fire Oracle, that way you take one person down fast, and they can't hurt you anymore. If you split the fire, they both die at once, but get to hurt you for twice as long.

The Oracle is still alive but I think we can already prepare to say farewell to the last Kobold in the game. Xykon retreats to the Phylactery but will have no problem to find a host. Pompey, Sabine and Leeky are each solid on hitpoints and will certainly survive the next round. Together with Hilgya, that triple also forms the pool of top candidates to win the game. It should be a nice example of asymmetrical warfare between these four, especially since Xykon and Julia still have to be factored in as threats.

Where will the next beating take place. Tell me until Monday, 4 PM Eastern.

To my utter surprise, the Oracle is still alive. Which can't be said for Julia who became beaten into a pulp and the Centipedes leaving behind barely enough for a burial. This removes her as factor and if we assume the Oracle to not suvive for long, leaves five characters with realistic chances each. Even Xykon has a good shot if the others continue the game exterminating each other sequentially. Although it might be more realistic to see a 2 on 2 - which might happen as soon as two players figure that hey can take out the other ones on their own. But this only my guess...

Cuz I fully expected to die this round, and wanted to hurt Sabine. (friggin' Energy Drain wrecked the game for me) and a Hydra would've been a waste of a round, as I'd die before it could attack. I am fully, completely screwed. I have 1 HP, the rest of the game is in an alliance that excludes me, and both healers are against me. There is no way I am winning this game, so I'm gonna go out spiteful and hex a couple of people before I die.

Inky, I think you're reading too much into it. All four of us (Pompey, Sabine, Hilgya, Leeky) have been allied since round 1. We've been focussing fire and supporting eachother pretty much the whole time.

We basically play to our strengths.
Sabine has been the recipient of most of my buff spells, because she is the one who can employ it the best.
- she is female (gets the +4 bonus)
- hilgya does better healing than attacking

Enlong, nothing personal, but we basically made a pact to get down to the final four. Thats the only reason you were targeted the last couple of rounds. Same reasoning behind attacking Julia this round.

I'm actually surprised Pompey is still around. He has done much better than I expected him to.

Hmm apparently I wasn't reading enough into it then, as I thought only 2 of you were allied. I'd update the little alliance notecards that I made at the beginning of the game, but I'm dead, so there wouldn't be much point to that.

For the record, I knew Hilgya-Sabine-Pompey were allied from just about the start, but I always figured Leeky was part of a mini alliance including the Oracle, Leeky and a few other minor characters.

And I like reading to much into things, its what I do. :smallbiggrin:

The Oracle dies after all, another victim of the Centipede horde. Without it, there are only five contestants remaining. Also it looks like Leeky is the next target of the sequentially chosen bandwagons. But maybe it is a 2 vs. 2 with Hilgya on his side, it is hard to find out right now.

Actually, just to explain things a little bit (because its been happening behind the scenes, and people might be interested)

This rounds attack against Leeky is because of his actions last round, or rather lack there-of.
The Oracle should have died last round from a tree attack.
Alarra had posted a message to all of us in the Linear Guild team saying she was going to be energy draining Julia.
Instead of being killed the Oracle stayed alive to do a prophecy against Sabine's Energy drain.
DLD/Leeky was the only one who could have killed the Oracle, and didn't
DLD let the Oracle take that action, and that just happened to target what Alarra broadcast as her move last round.

Coincidence?
Maybe, maybe not.

On perusing the actions last round, I realised it was a very sneaky indirect way that DLD targetted Alarra, while not actually seeming to. (Kudos to DLD)

The only reason it didn't work in the end, is that I pointed out to Alarra that Julia would already have lost her action from a previous attack anyway, in which case life drain was the better choice. I did this via private PM and Alarra changed her action.

Ah the betrayals and counter-betrayals. Such fun.

They should let Xykon help their own bandwagoning. Leave him undead a while, y'know? Whittle down the candidates for Soul Hidy-Place holder. Then take him out, and then the Last Who Lives.

Yeah, maybe you're right.
Spending actions every couple of rounds to kill Xykon is just going to make this game last longer.
The thing is once Xykon gets in, he will be very expensive to take out again.
If he gets the chance to set a trap, thats 4 points of damage to the next person who attacks him.
Maybe next time we should put a limit on how many times he can be pounded into the dust? Its not like we want to act as hosts for him - we're the ones who pounded him in the first place!

edit: And as long as there are NPC's around, my set trap is a bit useless aswell.

edit2: And since symbol of pain goes away after I die, thats quite useless too. I dont have many options here.

Also I think they're bitter because I told them not to side with the OOTS, but they didn't listen, and look at them now :smalltongue:

That plan only works if all evil characters are at the point when any can be killed in a single round.

Randomly hitting Sabine? That just makes Xykon shift his carrier over to Pompey.

Pompey was actually carrying the phylactory one round.
And it was actually possible to kill him that round if everyone (including Pompey) supported eachother. I wasn't really in favour of that option though ;-)

Take a look at Sabine's special action:

Tactical Escape: (passive) Whenever Sabine is dealt more than 2 damage in one round, prevent all further attacks against her until the end of that round.Max we could do against Sabine 7 damage per round. (get to the edge and then hit her with a buffed attack). In practice it normally means damage of 3-4.

Attacking Leeky with the centipedes was suicide for the centipedes - the animal companion would have slaughtered them.
It was either you or Alarra. Or maybe leave the centipedes inactive. I did consider that option. Sorry, but I wasn't ready to attack Alarra while Leeky was alive.

Backstabbed you? I suppose. Following a buff up with an attack on you could be seen as a backstab. But as far as I was concerned, the last couple of rounds have been a semi free-for-all.

Or maybe its just that Pompey thinks that Sabine is hotter than Hilgya ;-)

No hope of winning the game? Against Sabine agreed. You can't beat the damage reduction on your own.
Against anyone else? Possible, but not very likely.
If you get first in initiative order sanctuary would mean you have two rounds free from attack. So you can do 1 damage every two rounds, while the other person does nothing. At that point it comes down to the luck of the dice - how often you get initiative first.

By comparision, Julia in a 1 on 1 would invariably win, because if you can only do one attack, it just turns into an "energy drain" on her. She would never lose HP, and eventually missile you to death. You would need two characters, or a NPC helper to kill her 1 on 1.

Yes I have thought about this game too much.

Aww man, this is where I wish I would've picked the Sacrificing Minions attack instead of symbol of pain.

Sacrificing Minions: (attack) Deals 1 damage to target character for every three dead evil player characters (rounded up.).

I counted 11 dead evil players ATM, so that would make an attack of 4 damage :smallbiggrin:

The game continues although it could soon be decided as Sabine becomes more and more frightful with each Heal she receives. She is probably still stoppable but with the amount of quarrel between her three adversaries, it doesn't look likely. Unless a lineup against the fiend comes into effect soon, the game threatens to come to a quick end. Pompey might have a nice set of abilities against Sabine in the endgame, but 28 HP will be a lot to overcome.

Next round ends Saturday 7 PM Eastern or whenever I have all actions.

Pompey, Xykon and Sabine are the trio that enters the final standoff. Which is a great achievement for evnafets, since his character is one of the few that is well-equipped for a 1 vs. 1 against either Sabine or Xykon. And if it weren't for Sabine's ridiculously high HP total, he would be calling the shots now. But even with Sabine at 30+ HP, Alarra will have to work hard for the win. Sabine is a strong character, but she can't get rid of people quickly and a team of Xykon and Pompey would easily beat her even with her massive defensive abilities. The main question remains, whether there is an alliance of 2 vs. 1 to be forged and how long it will hold. The only sensible alliance is Xykon/Pompey and surprisingly, killing Xykon with a Centipede is a good sign for it - as in the current state of the game, the Centipede attack equalled a delayed +5 Healing spell.

So...everything is possible now. I'd give Sabine 40% chances and Xykon/Pompey 30% each. But this is only my guess.

What will actually happen? For this round, this round the actions seem rather obvious but just in case of interplayer communication or template constructions, I'll formally set a deadline. Send your actions until Sunday, 4 PM Eastern.

Waiiittt. If theres only evil heroes, Xykon can't lose, he will just keep returning again and again. You'll probably rule that when hes in his soul hidey place and theres noone else around he loses, but that reeks of arbitrarily getting rid of a power hes perfectly entitled to. Just my opinion though.except my opinion is the right one of course :)

I have indeed assumed that xykon would be invincible if only one other evil player is alive. It's just gonna be a matter of time. Thats why my biggest concern so far has been eliminating Hilgya. Thanks for declaring your healing actions in advance!!! :smallbiggrin:

Hey Silkenfist, are you going to house rule that his soul-hidey place can no longer be used once only Xykon and one other random evil player are left alive? Cause by RAW theres no way Xykon can loose in that situation. And you would be letting a lot of Xykon fans down. :P

inky: The wording is perfectly fine. If Xykon is in his phylactery, he is technically dead. If all but one characters are dead, the remaining characer survives. That is the RAW and it will entitle Sabine/Pompey the win if they have defeated their counterpart and forced Xykon back into his Soul-Hidey Place. Xykon would come back later but it doesn't matter since the game has already ended.

Aahh, too bad.

Oh well, second place is still pretty good I suppose.

Will The honorable lankybugger, god of MS paint and founder of the house of horrors, still be making a custom golden sig image for the winner? And if so, could he be persuaded to make a silver sig image for second place? Xykon would look better in silver anyway.

I considered Life Drain Centipede to be the best choice clearly. If Alarra doesn't do something against the Centipedes, she will lose to them.

Considering Xykon: The Lich will meet a rephrase as well as a lot of the other characters. But this is already the best-case scenario for Xykon. Two evil characters remain and they are of roughly equal strength when going 1on1.

It seems like Sabine will be cut down to a more huggable size by Pompey and Xykon. It will be interesting to see how long that 2 on 1 will last.

Hmm, probably the best move if you ask me. Now Alarra will be forced to try and take down Xykon to stop the pain, or continue killing centipedes, which is a garunteed loss. Or she could try killing Pompey, but he has enough HP that that looks like a losing strategy. And of course killing Xykon will leave her with a literal horde of centipedes to deal with.

But on the other hand, she has tons of HP, damage reduction, and flee the scene, making her extremely hard to kill.

My money is currently on Xykon, honestly.

Xykon has one thing protecting him from Sabine. Set Trap. That's four rounds with Symbol of Pain. My money is still on the Centipedes. They have the most kills to date.

If I were Xykon, I'd be going for Pompey.. He's got the fastest way to off the lich should it come to a 1v1, but that's just me.

actually.. He's right. Xykon needs to think towards the future if he wants to win this. The moment one of them dies, he loses his invulnerable status. Therefore he needs to be ready to kill either one of them the moment one drops. If he starts beating up on both of them now, he could sand a chance, but if he focuses his fire, either on Sabine or Pompey, he doesn't stand a chance.

Hmm. But of course I can't think for Xykon, and I know he has a masterplan. :smalltongue:

meh. Pompey and the centipedes can kill xykon in one round. Sabine can do it in two. Right now either of them can kill Xykon pretty easily. But its not in Pompey's interest to kill Xykon right now.
Xykon is going to keep coming back like a bad penny. The obvious tactic for Xykon to win is make sure BOTH of the other characters are taking damage, rather than siding with one over the other, so that when one finally dies, the other is within his grasp. Right now that obviously means concentrating on Sabine as she has the most HP.n

Sabine does 2 damage per turn. Concentrating on Pompey, she can kill him in 9 rounds, but she'll be taking damage doing so. In a one on one Sabine vs Pompey that would probably come down to who wins initiative more often.

Sabine will take 3-4 damage per round max (due to her escape ability) The last few rounds she's only been taking 1-2. I still think she's got the most staying power.

This round goes to Alarra who managed to bring down Pompey at an equal rate with Sabine while keepin Pompey from enlarging his army. Still, these tricks will not work forever. The only question is: Will they work long enough?

I can't make any real estimates about the rest of the battle, and if I could I would pretent not to or not post them here to prevent my opponents from guessing my tactics, but I can predict this is going to take a while before this is finished. :smallbiggrin:

Another strong round for Sabine. Alarra's clever move allowed her to disable the Trap and deal some damage to Xykon without taking excessive damage herself because of the escape ability. Still, the future will look grim for Sabine if she can't convince Xykon and Pompey to go for each other's throats. At least it will be interesting to see when Xykon receives the next Coup de Grace.

:xykon: Sooo, I was just thinking, would it be smart / wise / funny / usable to force all players who are left to write a template for their respective character, and let the rest of the battle take place in a matter of minutes? It would be usable because it would really speed up a potentially VERY long end battle, and it would be funny because the chance of winning would depend on a players template-writing skills. any thoughts anyone?

Let me hear some opinions, suggestions, facts, fantasies.

Xykon has already prepared for this scenario. His Masterplan hits Sabine for 6 damage. Sabine takes them all and flies away.

Pompey's Centipedes can only sit and stare.

Pompey himself summons yet another Centipede for his growing army.

Finally one of Xykon's plans works. Even with Sabine's excellent defensive abilities, she won't be able to take many of these hits.

Concerning Beta's suggestion: It is up to you to decide to run the rest of the game on template ground. I won't urge you in any direction, the game might not take too long anyway. Not if Xykon keeps up this batting average.

BTW that should be 2 damage to Pompey and 1 life to Sabine? It kinda reads that 2 life goes to Sabine. I think the HP end up right, it just reads funny.

@ silkenfist : I think that if some but not all players were to enter a template to run the rest of the game for them, those player(s) not running by template will have the advantage. They will be able to manually pick the best action each round, where as the template players can only hope for the best. So if we wanna do a template contest, it should be all or nothing. All players by template or noone.

Pompey uses his Petty Vengeance for the very first time, although it might be the only time as well, seeing that Buffing one of his Centipedes will be just as good in many cases. Meanwhile Sabine forces Xykon back into his Phylactery for reasons not known to me at all.

And of course...I just noticed...it doesn't even matter who will be chosen by Xykon now. If one of you dies right now, the game is over anyway, no matter who the carrier is. Beta can take two days off, the rest of you please send me something.
