I don't play Pathfinder but I do occasionally crib ideas from it, and I was thinking of porting over the Summoner for a player of mine.

I know the Eidolon is extremely powerful (maybe more so then Astral Construct armor cheese) but what about the Summon Monster line itself? Is the Pathfinder version more or less potent then the 3.5 version?

Summoning in Pathfinder is more potent, because it's more generous about giving you creatures of higher CR. Generally, it shifts creature access down a spell level, and allows for creatures like glabrezus, nalfeshnees, trumpet archons, and astral devas at SMIX.

The Summoner gets 1 min/level for their summons which gives some out of combat uses. There are feats (Summon Good Monster, Summon Neutral Monster) which expand the list of summonable monsters further.
