Hey all so in an upcoming game the DM has allowed me to play a psion, thing is I haven't played one before and don't know really where to start. I want to make a psion similar to Laurin except I'm starting at level one so obviously it won't look like her too much initially. Anyway I'm not trying to make my psion super optimized but some advice would be appreciated!

I want to make a psion similar to Laurin except I'm starting at level one so obviously it won't look like her too much initially. Anyway I'm not trying to make my psion super optimized but some advice would be appreciated!First, this is a guidebook you should read. (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=10238.0) Second, you should consider what you want your focus to be. Look at the class skills of each subtype of psion, as well as the powers in their respective disciplines. If you want some help, come back and let us know what you've decided -- or at least, what your desires are.

Also, what are the other players playing, and how much experience do they have, both in roleplaying and in optimizing?

What level are you starting at? What sources are allowed? What kinds of adventures does your DM run, in general, and what kind of campaign will this one be? What kinds of characters do you normally play?

I don't know how much experience the other players have but right now they have a wizard/rogue and conjurer, while the other three haven't made their characters yet either although one is considering a ranger or rogue. We're starting at level 1, we can use any sources as long as we check w/ the DM and get it approved, the campaign will be a balance of everything but leaning toward roleplay but DM said whatever we found enjoyable would occur most often really, and as for characters I normally play well I'm fairly new to RPing in general but right now I'm playing a paladin, cleric, and a ranger.

Whacking things with sticks? Being clever and using a toolbox of flexible abilities to think outside the box? Battlefield control? Something else, maybe?

I would prefer to be able to deal damage while also being flexible enough to do well outside of combat as well.

I would prefer to be able to deal damage while also being flexible enough to do well outside of combat as well.Look at the shaper. It's got an amazing mix of direct damage, utility, and even a summons-type power at its disposal. There is literally no campaign in which psionics is available that it can't function, unlike, say, telepath in an undead apocalypse campaign. If you decide that you like it, see if you can play a warforged, as they work very well with the Repair Damage power.

You may also want to look at the constructor PrC (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625b) and the crystal master PrC, (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625d) both of which work very well with a shaper.
