How do they see or know where they are going underground?

They are native to the Plane of Elemental Earth, where everything is underground/in solid ground, and their natural behavior is just moving about at random. If they are enslaved by the dao, they probably are working around tunnels, and can see normally in the tunnels.

In short, vision isn't hugely important, and they don't really go anywhere. I seem to remember some fluff to the effect that they use percussive blows on the ground to communicate with each other via subsonics over vast distances, but earth glide's remarkably not-thought-out mechanic doesn't seem to support this.

They also have darkvision, allowing them to see inside tunnels on the plane of earth.
