MM1 pages 175 CREATING A LYCANTHROPE & 178 - LYCANTHROPES AS CHARACTERS -
now I can follow this along and get so far but a couple things that are unclear - the creature portion does it have to be an animal or could it be a magical beast?
and then - “Lycanthrope” is a template that can be added to any humanoid so would this work for a monsterous humanoid?
then on the Hit Die portion it appears that its what ever class levels D ?? and then the creature hit die IE: 6D8
with looks like a level adjustment of +2 or +3

so any help on these questions is great

Must be a non-dire Animal type within one size category of the base creature.

Nope, the base creature can only be of the Humanoid or Giant types.

Well, actually you gain an LA of 2 for acquired or 3 for natural lycanthropy, and then you gain the Racial Hit Die for the animal you choose. You get Hit Die for the animal HD per the animal, but once you're done with that, you go back to class level HD. Basically, you're cross-classing into Animal for a set duration.

Dire animals are allowed, since they are just different kinds of animals. The wererat and the werewolf lord are examples right in the book.
