So in a game someone is trying to use Banish on a PC Barghest (savage species).

Apparently someone is saying that a Devil that is banished back to its home plane cannot return to the material plane unless specifically summoned by someone else.

To me this does not make any sense because Barghests originate in The Bleak Eternity of Gehenna. And it says that part of a Barghest's life cycle they go to the material plane to feed and mature. How do they get to the material plane in the first place if there is no real entrance?

Or do summoners just sit there and say "well, guess we should do our yearly barghest whelp summons to help devils grow up and mature."

(Basically the question is...... If a Barghest is banished back to Gehenna (or any other plane) how can it get back? or can it come back?)

There's nothing in the banish spell that forbids a creature from returning to the plane it was banished from by it's own means. True banishment, which has a truespeak component, does what that player is thinking, preventing them from returning for one month per level, or until they can learn and speak the caster's truename.

That said barghests have no inherent means of planar travel, so he will still need to find a way to return somehow. For more information on how barghests might find their way to the material plane, check out afroakuma's planar questions thread.
