I wasn't sure to put this with Media or Gaming, so I went with Gaming.

So, what songs do you all like in videogames? My personal favorites are

With Lyrics: 1000 Words (FFX-2)
Without Lyrics: You're not alone (FFIX) or ...er.. I dunno the name of it, it was that one theme on Halo...

I personally prefer the Halo 2 theme: Mjolnir Mix. Go hard rock!

Oh god....videogame music! Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalal~!

Prepare for the longest list this thread has ever seen! (Considering the only other list is only two songs long :smallwink: )

In no particular order:

Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra - Boss Fight
Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose - The Image Theme of Xenosaga II - Yuki Hajiura
" " - Here He Comes - Yuki Hajiura
" " - Assault - Yuki Hajiura
" " - Fatal Fight (Jin and Margulis) - Yuki Hajiura
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness - Red Moon
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories - Sinful Rose
Final Fantasy VII - Aeris' Theme
Final Fantasy VII - Those Who Fight Further
Final Fantasy VIII - Force Your Way
Final Fantasy VI - The Decisive Battle AND
Final Fantasy VI by S.S.H. - The Decisive Battle (Remix)

Final Fantasy IV - Battle 2
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - Opening Theme

Man with the Machine Gun from FFVIII. But only the version on FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC. Basically they made a CD of the FFVIII music, they just...made it better. The original is too "beepy" for my tastes.

Street Fighter 2 had excellent music, particularly Vega's, Ryu's, Ken's, Zangief's and Guile's themes.

Sonic 2: Chemical Plant zone is simply a classic. Metropolis zone wasn't bad either and I've heard a fine remix of Casino Night zone as well.

X-Men, Children of the Atom: Magneto's stage.

Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles: Hydrocity zone, sub-boss fight (S&K version), Flying Battery zone, Lava Reef zone 2/Hidden Palace zone, Sky Sanctuary zone, plus many more. There's a (near) full remix of the game's soundtrack at Overclocked Remix that is well worth downloading just for the remixes of Sky Sanctuary and Hidden Palace.

Final Fantasy VI: all of it, but particularly Dancing Mad, Terra's theme, Celes' theme and Kefka's theme.

I'm a real FF music fanboy, so it's great that this kind of topic is here at last.

FF7: Still More Fighting, Main Theme were my highlights I think.

Can't really go through each one actually, since generally I think they have fantastic soundtracks. I doff my cap to Uematsu-san.

FF aside, I've loved the Soul Calibur, Zelda and Dark Chronicle soundtracks most of all. Skies of Arcadia, Shadow of the Colossus had some really great tracks, while I adore the MGS2 main theme as well.

Every song from every Metroid game ever made. Megaman X and Megaman X3 had some great songs too, but the Metroid series has the best music overall.

Utada Hikaru's wonderful work on Kingdom Hearts games. Metal Gear Solid final credits tracks. Snake Eater. Prince of Persia tracks for the Sands of Time cycle.

Why can't I find such tracks for PC games?

Final Fantasy 6 - Overworld Theme
Final Fantasy 6 - Celes's Theme
Those 2 are particularly good played by a live orchestra.

Final Fantasy 7 - Aeris's Theme

Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (The entire fricking soundtrack is great)

Chrono Trigger - Undersea Palace

Soul Reaver Theme song (Ozar Midrashim?)
Soul Reaver 2 Theme song - Ariel's Lament

Maybe the beginning song in KH 1 or 2.

Some of the faster songs in EVE online. Others I cant remember.

One thing I find funny is that when heavy metal music would fit a fps, they instead put in something that doesnt fit.

hmmmm ~ponders~

Still in the dark - Milia Vs Zato-1/Eddy music from Guilty Gear X2, awesome guitarage.

Vicious 1915 - Europe battle theme - Shadow hearts 2, I love the harmonic vocals that waver through it, used to go fight things just to listen to the tune heh ^-^'.

Boss battle music from Breath of Fire 3, always loved the uptempo nature of the music, gives you the feeling you're fighting something important

And many others, of which a few have been mentioned already by others, I'll add more as I think of them heh

I was just about ready to scorn this thread for the lack of Guilty Gear, up until I saw your post.

Anyways, I'd say that pretty much the entire Guilty Gear X2 soundtrack takes the top position, followed by Time's Scar from Chrono Cross's opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B97Ir8Q7e0), followed by... just about everything Nobuo Uematsu's ever composed, really. I especially like his stuff from Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII, but it's all brilliant, really.

Have anyone heard the piano version of the song they play in the overworld when you're in 600 AD from Chrono Trigger? It's very good.

Also, Ozar Midrashim from Legacy of Kain is a classic.

I've heard several. I take it you're talking about one that's actually made by Square-Enix/Squaresoft/whatever, in which case that'd be the one that I haven't heard.

The opening theme to Chrono Cross.

Possibly also the "Theme of Laura" from Silent Hill 2.

What? No love for Donkey Kong Country 2?

Stickerbrush Symphony, Life in the Mines, Gang Plank Galleon? All amazing.

Personally, I've never been much of a fan of the Faux Operatic thing they do in the new big RPGs to make them seem all grandiose and professional, I prefer the older, rythmically catchy soundtracks.

Command + Conquer red alert - the various incarnations of Hell March
Mechcommander 2 - the opening music
Mechwarrior vengeance - the opening
Mechwarrior Black Knight - the music for the mission where you get betrayed
Mechwarrior Mercenaries - There's a track that always just seems to fit whenever my back's to the wall and I'm in a brawl with a critically hit sniper mech (for that read totally screwed). Don't ask me what it's called though
FF7 - JENOVA, Turks theme, Main theme, One Winged Angel, Cids theme, Highwind theme.

*gives you a banana*

I'm listening to Stickerbrush Symphony right now! But you left out the enchanted woods and the lava :(

Almost everything from Donkey Kong Country 2, the Waterfall and snow music from DKC3, about half of DKC's music... Super Mario RPG's music, especially the ending, Froggy's theme in Tetris Attack, some of the music from Final Fantasy 6, Chill Penguin's stage in Mega Man X... what can I say, I loved the SNES.

Super Mario 64's credits and underwater level music also deserves mentioning.

Ok, it's not the most interesting battle music but it draws you into the game like no music I've ever heard in a game before.

I'm fond of the "Infinite Dungeons" theme from the eponymous Neverwinter Nights Premium Module; that and other songs by David John (http://david-john.com) are very nice.

Someone mentioned Civ songs; I'd like to specifically note its original theme, "Baba Yetu" arranged by Christopher Tin, as especially gorgeous.

The whole Planescape: Torment soundtrack by Mark Morgan should get a mention.

I generally prefer any music which is either fully orchestrated or, if performed on a synthesizer, was actually appropriately written for synthesizer/electronic music, and therefore takes advantage of the medium rather than simply tries to poorly mimic the sound of another instrument. I hate a lot of console game music, including much of the lauded Final Fantasy music, because I can't stand that certain canned synthesized sound so many of them have (I have heard some FF songs played on piano, and they're gorgeous--but I'll listen to that and not the music as it is in-game). Some synth/electronic music is absolutely freaking gorgeous, but some console game music in that medium just sounds like someone's not trying hard enough.

And all that said, for console games and for "sung songs"/theme songs rather than incidental music, the ending theme song for Final Fantasy IX is lovely--it's well written and performed nicely (the one that the character Blade is always la-la-ing; I can't remember the name).

So many good songs, but the first that jump to mind are from Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime: Echoes.

Specifically, Dark Samus Battle, Final Battle (From Echoes), Echoes, Samus vs Metroid Prime.

Those are especially good "action" music pieces.

1. Monster Hunter when you're fighting Lao Shan Lung
2. Xenosaga III: Also Sprach Zarathustra when fighting the Blue Testament in the church
3. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess during the duel with Ganondorf
4. Onimusha Demon Siege when fighting Guildenstern
5. Final Fantasy VIII during the first fight with Edea

Let's see...

Chaotic Dance, one of the boss themes from Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean was pretty good.

Other favourites include:

Finish the Promise (final boss theme from Tales of the Abyss)
Battle on the Big Bridge (Gilgamesh's theme from Final Fantasy V)
Time's Scar (Chrono Cross opening theme)
Everlasting Fight (special battle theme from Tales of the Abyss)

And this may sound odd but I also liked the FF8 normal Boss them (not the, Super-Boss themes, the ones you get when fighting most GFs)

That's not odd. It's one of the greatest boss battle tracks in my opinion, second only to Fighting The Spirit from Tales of Phantasia, and followed closely by Dancing Mad from FF6 and Still More Fighting (aka boss battle) from FF7.

About non-RPGs... Guilty Gear XX also has, as mentioned before, awesome music. I especially like Kliff's theme (whatever the name is), Noontide (Sol vs Ky) and Suck a Sage (Chipp's theme).

About western games... umm... the music from Warcraft III's trailer and WoW's intros (both normal and TBC). A very old RTS game called The Chronicles of the Black Moon also had a lot of cool music in it.

You guys are waaay newschool. ;)

Let's turn the clock back a bit.

Megaman 2: Quickman's Theme and Metalman's Theme
Castlevania - pretty much any of the original tracks, as well as the virtually classic "Bloody Tears" from CV2.
Blaster Master - Pretty much all of the first six stage themes are classic stuff.
Ninja Gaiden - Stage V, I believe was my favorite there.

Slightly newer:
Shining Force 3 - Dragon! Clear the Path to Victory (Medion's Theme)
Fatal Fury 3 - Terry's Theme, Geese's Theme
Metal Slug - Stage 1.

Honorable mention to Segata Sanshiro's Theme - not actually video game music, but rather, the theme song for a video game system Mascot. (For those not aware, Segata Sanshiro was the commercial 'mascot' for the Sega Saturn in Japan. He was a martial artist who spent his time beating up people he found who -weren't- playing the Sega Saturn. (I can't make this stuff up.P) He's also, to the best of my knowledge, the only advertising figure who has ever died honorably defending his company's HQ from a missile attack by a crazed terrorist. (Did I mention I can't make this stuff up? Check the Wikipedia!))

On the PC Side, the Hero's Quest...err...Quest for Glory series from Sierra takes my personal prize in this space. Honorable mention to Loom, because, well, they didn't exactly compose their own music. ;P

I liked FF VII's music, ecpessially:
The boss fight music (for most of the bosses in the game, not the end ones.)
and Cosmo Canyon's music.

Urm... That's the only two I can think of from the top of my head =).

And ALL of the original Terran Themes! All 3 of them..

And Cosmic Angel Theme from Sonic Advance one or two... I can't remember.
Sky Chase Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog Two...
And I think I like the music from Flying Battery, on Sonic and Knuckes...

So much for those were the only two I could think off =).

Dancing Mad FTW! Also one of the longest (if not THE longest) FF music tracks. Doesn't sound as majestic as some of the later pieces, unfortunately, no thanks to that tinny synthesizer music they used in the original game.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, try listening to the Black Mages remixes. Nobuo's been keeping active after he left Square-Enix. Two albums so far of rock/techno remixed pieces from various FF games - some aren't that good (the singer in The Skies Above [To Zarnakand] sounds horrible), but the rest of the album makes up for it. Some of the ones I like are The Decisive Battle (FF6, 1st album), The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 2nd album), and Matoya's Cave (FF1, 2nd album). And yes, they remixed Dancing Mad too.

Deionarra's theme (http://youtube.com/watch?v=OZOuy4YM0AI) from Planescape:Torment remains the single most memorable, haunting tune I have ever heard.

As far as songs with lyrics, try Curse of Monkey Island's "A Pirate I Was Meant To Be!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-9my0tsutw) Hilarious, though the song doesn't start 'til the video is halfway over. One of my favorite parts of the whole game.

The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 2nd album)
I thought for sure Man with the Machine Gun was Barret's theme, and thus appeared in FF7.
But, I despised both 7 & 8, so I will chalk it up to not knowing enough about the FF series if I am wrong.

The Man with the Machine Gun is the battle music in FF8 in the visions of the past, when you animate Laguna. Who is also, in my opinion, the coolest character in this game.

Tough call, but..........
I'd say the no lyrics music from FFX, both songs from FFX-2 (Real Emotion and 1000 Words, in English Jade version), and most definitely Simple and Clean from Kingdom Hearts

"Reminiscence" from the Suikoden series. I could post a linky to where you can dl it. Pretty pretty piano song. "A Song In The Praise Of Peace" is nice too.

Lots of people seem to like Final Fantasy music, I personally think that FFX had the best music in the series. I liked pretty much all of the game music, especially the bit in the snowy Ronzo Mountains (or whatever it's called) and Auron's theme.

Baldur's Gate series has been mentioned, and is good, but I think the music from Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale I and II trumps the Baldur's Gate soundtrack. The Kuldahar themes from the Icewind Dale series are beautiful, melodic, and haunting.

How could I forget Hell March from Command and Conquer Red Alert. And Hell March 2 from Red Alert 2 ?

To quote RA2, you think as I do. The second part was okay, but the first Hell March was simply classical. Also, the Arilou and Thraddash themes from Star Control 2 were incredibly good (the negotiation themes, not the ship victory themes, that is). They've come to my mind countless times.
