:belkar: :belkar: :belkar:

To honor the old Halfling tradition of addressing others with spontaneous nicknames (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0957.html) that make sense (instead of the garbage some questionable 'authority' has given them) and in spirit of the thread Belkar's colorful names for other characters (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?351753-Belkar-s-colorful-names-for-other-characters) (who brought this madness upon us), I want to collect all 'names' the one and only Belkar Bitterleaf (which probably is a name the Belkster bestowed upon himself) uses.

So without furder ado, here is a table containing the so far used 'names', presented in a sortable table - so if you find the chronological order boring, you can simple sort it by alphabet or character addressed :smallwink:

*Several of these were contributed by Belkar, but it is not possible to discern which came from him.
Some things to be aware of:

If you find something not listed, please point it out (best with the strip, so I can put it in the right place). To make this a complete collection I need some help :smallwink:
I will collect any reference from Belkar to anyone/anything else (including himself and non-character stuff like Evil Father Patrol or Happy Fun Sunshine Land - because it is way too awesome not to list )
I will track multiple usages from different strips (though not within one strip) and/or bonus material
I will not be overly strict (in fact I will not dismiss any finding) on what count as 'name' or whether something can be listed or not. If it is something said by Belkar that addresses some character I consider it as fair game :smalltongue:
Any type of feedback/questions/comments/improvement ideas are welcome, so feel free to post

I dunno if we can count Bloodfeast there. As far as we know, that's his real name after joining up with the Order.

I know - I have considered to put Bloodfeast into the original name column, too :smallwink:. But either way I think it should be listed.

Minor quibble: if I remember correctly, Belkar didn't call himself Ali S. Fakenamington. I thought the mayor called him that because he forgot to give his name. (Will have to double check my PDF when I have time for more than a drive-by posting.)

The panel before the newspaper ends with the major questioning a leaving Belkar "Wait - what IS your name, brave adventurer?".
So while we technically don't have the confirmation that Ali S. Fakenamington is used by Belkar, I think if Belkar wouldn't have answered the question, a better headline would be "Ankheg slain by anonymous hero". Asking someone for their name and then just inventing something sounds not that reasonable to me.

Edit: On page 11 the mayor greets him with "Oh, it's you, Fakenamington." - this imo makes only really sense if Belkar said he was Ali S. Fakenamington.

Edit: some additional detail

In the case of a name like "ears", which Belkar uses frequently, do we count each instance or just the first one?

I would list all instances - it allows to see which alternatives Belkar uses regularly and which are only a one-off.

Alright, he calls Vaarsuvius "ears" in 107. In the same strip he calls them "pointy-eared, purple-haired, ambiguously-gendered pain in my ass."

Not sure if that second one really qualifies as a name.

Title should be "What characters should really be called," not "How ..."

The answer to "How" would be an adverb (loudly, cautiously, rudely, etc.) or a methodology. The answer to "What" is the actual word or phrase being used to address them.

Thanks for all the input . I will add them later, when I have the time to do so.

Not sure if that second one really qualifies as a name.

I personally don't really want to draw any lines what qualifies and what not. Unless there is objection against it, I will collect any non-trivial* statement Belkar uses instead of the "normal" name.

*So I don't want to collect every time Belkar calls V "elf" or Miko "paladin". If Belkar provides additional important content about that person, I think it is fair game.

Title should be "What characters should really be called," not "How ..."

The answer to "How" would be an adverb (loudly, cautiously, rudely, etc.) or a methodology. The answer to "What" is the actual word or phrase being used to address them.

Wowww I made this grammar-police post from my phone last night while a bit drunk, and completely forgot about it until just now. I apologize for being an obnoxious nitpicker. =)

:smalleek: Wow, and I thought the first thread would feature a rather large amount of nicknames.
I now have the feelings that this was only the tip of the iceberg. Thanks for all contributions - and massive update incoming soonish.

That's a standard euphemism for sex, not a personal name for Haley and Elan.

well if were allowing things like "Ambiguously gendered pain in my ass" I don't see how that wouldn't fit the criteria.

As basically outlined above I personally don't want to open the discussion "is X a name or not". If someone points to something (that hits the bar minimum, i.e. Belkar addressing another character (or group of characters) with something else than their normal name*) I will include it.

Yes, some things probably are a (more or less) big stretch to call names. But first it somewhat matters in context (e.g. why does Durkon get premium top notch names whereas V only gets some kind of random slurs?), second there are some really awesome things that if I'm honest aren't really names (like Sexy shoeless good of war) and lastly I don't really want to spent that much time to figure out whether something is a name or isn't a name. [And I have seen things while searching a bit that I will not include in the list, because I think there don't fit here - but should someone point them out, I will include them.]

If If there is enough demand for such a distinction, I will not enforce my opinion onto this thread and change that stance. But I think this would shift this thread from "lets find funny things Belkar said" to "is <this> a name or not?". And the second one does sound kinda stupid to me.

*Or nickname with general widespread use. From the top of my hat the only thing that should be in this category is "V" for Vaarsuvius

(plus Happy Fun Sunshine Land if we're naming places too)

On this I'm not sure - what do others think about it? Should we track other things than characters? Should we list places? Or maybe even other things (if that even really happens)?

I'm open to the general idea, but I don't want to "derail" the thread, unless that is what the people here want.

How about extending the list to cover all characters, not just Belkar? So we could have Thog's Talky-Man and Not-Nale, as well as Celia's Soul-Patch.

Basically the same as above (if other people really want it), with a strong personal opinion of not wanting to do it. First of all I think it doesn't add that much (noticeable counterexample would probably be Xykon - but he doesn't even remember any name, so I'm not sure whether that should be count. Belkar on the other side demonstrates more than often that he does remember the names of other characters.) and second of all it adds a whole new layer of problems to the question "how to best organize this collection?" [and keeping is simple isn't that bad].

I agree, don't take “name” too strongly. Further, note that Belkar specifically uses capital letters in many of these examples, and he says “the Beast with Two Backs” with capital letters in particular.

Mh, I will keep track of the issue.

Right now I see it as:

Potential new contentProContra

other things than characters30

names by other characters21

I'm not sure what to do it with it right now (i.e. I don't know when any one side has "won"). I will keep track of things mentioned here (like the Happy Fun Sunshine Land) in my personal file (but not yet(?) in the OP) - so if we decide to change things I don't miss stuff. If you want to share your opinion but do not want to "clutter" the thread, you can also state your opinion by PM to me.

I'm unsure how to organize it in the case we widen the spectrum of this thread. I think I would simple add the places and other stuff into the main table (and rename the Character header - it is already a bit of a stretch with "Vector Legion" and such). If we include names from other characters, I think I would put them into another table (or even multiple tables) - the table in the OP is pretty large already. In fact I ponder if it would be better to split it into multiple tables - but this would massively reduce the usefulness of the sorted table.

As for organizing the table, here's my 2 cents: Reorder columns like this: Name Belkar Uses | Official Name | Instances | Source

Then, instead of adding a new row for every instance of every name, you can just increment the Instances column, and add a new tag to the source.

Name Belkar Uses
Official Name
Instances
Source

Ears
Vaarsuvius
3923
107 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0107.html), 340 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0340.html)

That would also make it easier to record all uses of common Belkarnames (e.g. Ears) without cluttering up the table.

What do you say?

While the idea to group them does sound helpful in the long run (right now I'm hesitant to do so, because we haven't any entry more than three time, and it disrupts the chronological order of the list), I think I might switch to it in the long run.

On the instance thing I'm not sure. While it provides some additional value (i.e. you can sort the table by it), it is information I'm not traking yet (if you mean with instance "times said" - for example in one strip Belkar repeatedly uses Skullsy multiple times.) or it is (imo) misleading and redundant (if it is simple the number of strips). Also I think most of the times (I would assume over 90%) it would be "1" anyway, which doesn't sound that awesome to me.

But I changed my mind from "no way I'm doing this" to "maybe" while writing this post, so I think the chances are quite high that I will actually do it :smallannoyed: ...
[And this would also force me to group the entries]

Do you think Belkar pronounced "Ali S" with a long A, for the better joke, or with the more conventional short A?

Never thought about it - I ever pronounced it short (pretty much like the beginning of "alien" - though after thinking about it, I think it should be better pronounced long). But that is also like I would pronounce alias, so I hadn't any problem matching the joke.

[I'm not sure what is "correct". I can only say that from Wiktionary the pronunciation of alien /ˈeɪ.li.ən/ and alias /ˈeɪ.li.əs/ looks similar (and the hearing example from the alien page (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/alien) is short.]

Mh - I don't think I will start to offer any "pronunciation guide" to this thread :smalltongue:

It is a bit unclear to what exactly it refers, but since Belkar demands to attribute Armor Class to "The Beast with to Back", it imo clearly references persons. It could be that it is a generic template (or something like that) applied in that situation, but I think it is a fair assumption that he meant Elan and Haley

You've included "That Bilbo Tool" which is something that V only speculates that Belkar is thinking. Same thing, really.

For me the difference is that it is certain that "self buddy" and "elf buddy" was not used by Belkar, but by Illusory Belkar.

Whereas the source of "That Bilbo Tool" is imo at least a bit unclear. It could be made up by Vaarsuvius - but it could also be information that comes from Belkar himself (either because that panel shows how Belkar's brain actually works or the names are pulled directly from Belkar's mind). And that uncertainty is (for me) enough that I err on the side of inclusion.

[And anyway I don't really know what you want. Should we remove "That Bilbo Tool" or add "self/elf buddy" or do you not care as long as they treated the same?]

Note - Belkar says this as a single phrase. It should be a single entry in the table. You have separate entries for each word.

I don't think it's worth including single-word insults. There's too many times that he addresses someone as 'moron', 'idiot' or similar. It would fill up the table with boring, pointless entries. So you could remove the entry for "asshat"

No. I think only words that start with a capital letter count. Belkar is careful enough to user capital letters for names, unlike Thog for example. Now if a phrase is at the start of a sentence, it could be unclear whether Belkar meant it as a name, but here it's in the middle of a sentence.

Mh. The problem I see there is that we also have some really nice stuff that is not capitalized (like sexy shoeless god of war), but also some rather boring stuff that is capitalized (like Ears). So I will not discard it on the basis "it doesn't start with a capital letter" - because then I would be forced to remove other non-capitalized stuff, too.

But since the capitalization is one rather clear criterion, I think it could be useful to split the table into two pieces. So doing one table with capitalized stuff (probably more or less "proper names") and one with non-capitalized stuff (probably more or less "random phrases, used to address people").

Anyone thoughts about that distinction?

(Anyway as I said I count pretty much anything, so I will include it the next time I update the OP no matter what.)

Just so we're all clear on this, here's the relevant quote from Shakespeare, Othello, Act I, Scene 1: "I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs."

This makes me feel like it's not a name and is just Belkar referring to Elan and Haley having gotten together. He's not calling them the beast with two backs.

I know (at least after this was brought up here) what it references (and the source of said reference).
The question what exactly Belkar wants to state/address with that. If you replace "The Beast with Two Backs" with "doing something", I think Belkar's sentence in 402 doesn't make that much sense, since Armor Class imo should apply to some person/thing/object and not an activity. So I think it is legitimate to say he means "Elan and Haley doing something".

It is possible that "Elan and Haley" isn't really what is referenced here and it should be "Elan and Haley doing something". But since I'm pondering whether or not we should include other stuff, I think I just do that and change it to "Elan and Haley doing something". Or would have someone have problems with that?

Mh, I don't really see much of any metaphors going on there. The only thing that would somewhat fit would be the "freezing my considerable assets off", though I'm not sure what it should reference.

"sweating worse than a logger at DruidCon" is just a comparison. I can't see any "colorful renaming" or something similar there.

"harvesting his kidneys" could be a replacement for "killing him", though I think it is more likelier that he just wanted to harvest his kidneys - and I don't think we should collect any random/unusual sentence.

At the very least I would want to put into a concrete* thing that Belkar addresses with the name (or phrase) he uses. I think to collect words Belkar spoke is just too wide and troublesome and for me definitely outside of the scope of this project.

*I know "Elan and Haley doing something" doesn't look concrete, maybe "Elan and Haley having fun" would be better - but I don't really want to get plastic, but from context (and this thread) it is clear what is meant. This is more some sort of self-censoring.

Personally, I think mixing capitalized and non-capitalized isn't a really a problem, and that it isn't to large of a distinction. However, if that would make things neater, then I don't mind it.

I wanted to do update the OP tomorrow and will try how it looks. Only thing I don't like about it, if I do that, I don't see any reason to write ALL-CAPS stuff not in all caps.

But I think I'm just going to add both (i.e. doing the exact same capitalization as in the comic) and if given add the articles used.

EDIT: OP Updated. For now I have adopted to in-comic spelling as good as possible (including capitalization). I also "officially" included non-character stuff.

Some things to be aware of:

I will collect any reference from Belkar to anyone/anything else (including himself and non-character stuff like Evil Father Patrol or Happy Fun Sunshine Land - because it is way too awesome not to list )

I will not be overly strict (in fact I will not dismiss any finding) on what count as 'name' or whether something can be listed or not. If it is something said by Belkar that addresses some character I consider it as fair game :smalltongue:

As rodneyAnonymous pointed out I think it is better to draw no lines. I don't think there is a hard set of rules that we can really agree what is a name or not. So imo instead of adding countless discussion we just collect awesome stuff, and let the reader figure out whether it counts as name or not :smallwink:

On the Durkon/HPoH front: I'm still not exactly sure myself, but since I have counted two peoples who think a change is useful (at least I understood it that way), I'm changing that. But nothing is set in stone, so if someone wants to disagree, feel free to say something.

If we use the phrase from the comic (which I really like), I think we should also use the given capitalization. (Otherwise I would most likely capitalize it myself)

Yeah, unless I see other peoples who think that "Nuts-er" should be included I will not do so. Especially with the question mark and all it is imo clear that "nuts" is being used an adjective and "nuts-er" as the comparative to it. (Kinda like saying "Have you gone crazy? crazier??")

Because it is kinda awkward to write something else into that field At least I know I don't want to write "Trouser Titan" because, well that is established as belonging to Roy :smallwink:.

Maybe it would be better to write something else, but I have no good Idea. If you have some good suggestion I'm up for it, but the only alternative I have would be similar strings like "###" or "..." (but somehow "..." messes with sorting by Addressee, so that imo isn't an useful option anyway).

It seems to me like this thread is starting to drift into listing literally anything Belkar ever said that was not an actual proper name. :smallconfused:

I don't really see a problem here. And I don't really see a reasonable way how this should work without a whole bunch of work I really wouldn't like for this (like voting on what counts as valid and what not).

Some names are pretty clear "proper names" (like "Whiskers Von Thor-Bugger" or "Captain Wallow-Pants"). But then it slowly starts to get fuzzy - for someone it might count, for others it might not. The only hard rule that I think that could be used would be capitalization, but even this seems to lead to pretty much arbitrary decisions (e.g. "Lizard Vampire Guy" counts, but "that dwarf guy" don't), while missing out some really funny stuff (" [Thanh's] partner-in-ridiculous-blue-facial-hair" or "That pointy-eared pissbucket"). On top of that is sometimes isn't clear whether some phrase is capitalized or not (e.g. in 1015 the sentence starts with "Fake Durkon". It is impossible to tell from the comic why it is capitalized).

I plan on adding the newly proposed book introductory stuff when I have more time (hopefully tomorrow).

Currently the most likeliest thing to happen is adding some sort of <censored> to make it clear that there is something that isn't intended for display (and well - it is probably a bit inconsistent to have Belkar's Rod of Lordly Might censored while paraphrasing the Beast with Two Backs).

Was this entry left deliberately vague?

If not, and there is actual question to what it is...well...I do believe that is the name of the Belkster's reproductive appendage.

You call it the -

Well, I could put something else there, but haven't found something fitting for my tastes. But since you aren't the first to bring this up, maybe I really should do something about it. :smallsigh:

Currently the most likeliest thing to happen is adding some sort of <censored> to make it clear that there is something that isn't intended for display (and well - it is probably a bit inconsistent to have Belkar's Rod of Lordly Might censored while paraphrasing the Beast with Two Backs).

You should call it Belkar's Trouser Titan

Jerkon definitely comes from Belkar.

I suppose that:
Deep Fang Friar
The Creature Preacher
Pastor Expiration

Also have his mark, but it's harder to tell.

We could add a new "Possibly from Belkar" section. Normally I would complain about that a bit, but all these nicknames are so funny that I have absolutely no problem with erring on the side of inclusion for them.

Short of the Giant providing a definitive answer, I'd say the only one that's definitely Belkarian (Belkaresque? Belkarish?) is "Leechy Veinquaff."

It fits in with his previous insulting nicknames for Durkon/Norse-feratu, such as "Lurky Corpsewhiskers" and "Whiskers von Thorbugger." In fact, I'd actually be willing to put money on it being a Belkar construction.

"Nose-Fur-Atu" and "Deep Fang Friar" are likely Belkarisms, IMO, but they don't have the almost unavoidable Belkar stamp like "Leechy Veinquaff" does.

Ron Miel

The puns are more Elan's style of humour. I'd certainly put Jerkon as a Belkarism, but Deep Fang Friar is from Elan.

As far as I can tell, Belkar's nicknames from 1030 are: "Jerkon", "Leechy Veinquaff", "Pastor Expiration" and "Nose-fur-atu". Probably "Whiskers in the Dark" and "Deep Fang Friar" too, since it matches some previous spontaneous nicknames.

[In fact, if I had to sort out all the nicknames, I'd say it goes:

Belkar: Jerkon, Leechy Veinquaff, Pastor Expiration, Nose-fur-atu, Whiskers in the Dark, Deep Fang Friar;
Haley: Undurkon, The Creature Preacher;
Elan: Count Durkula, Nega-Dwarf, Nokrud, The Thorsaken;
V: Hel's Shell, The Corpse Formerly Known as Durkon;
Blackwing: Greg

Belkar probably says 6 of the nicknames because he's the king of spontaneous nicknames, followed by the party's spoony bard with 4 and the not-so-creative rest with 2 or 1.]

EDIT: Forgot Durkzzaro, but I have no idea who might have said this one since I couldn't get the pun.

ChristianSt

I do not plan to include any of these in the main list, because it is impossible to tell whether any of these is really Belkar or not. The only way to really do it would to vote on which is from Belkar and which is not - and I'm not sure this is really useful.

Since this situation is rather unique I don't think it is necessary to add a special section for these, I think at most a link to the strip with a short explanation would be more than sufficient.

What happens in Bizarro World, stays in Bizarro World (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizarro_World) (at least I would guess that it comes from there, although the spelling is slightly off.)

The only way to really do it would to vote on which is from Belkar and which is not - and I'm not sure this is really useful. I would suggest just adding a single row in the table listing *all* of them, with a short parenthetical note or endnote telling that some of those are from Belkar. We can still try to find out which ones are from whom, because it's fun and may help understanding the nicknames and the characters, but don't do that in the first post table.

I'm going to be a stick-in-the-mud and suggest that none of these get included aside from the ones we know are from Belkar.

This thread isn't the "Funny Nicknames From Members of the Order of the Stick Thread", as nice of a thread as that might be. As such listing them in a separate bit or adding them in any way is outside the scope of this thread, IMO.

Are they funny? Sure. Are they nicknames? Undoubtedly. Do we have any way whatsoever of telling which are from Belkar and which aren't? Not really, IMO. Sure there are some that are much more likely than not. But that's not a high enough bar, IMO.

Possibly, but Durkon*
*Not really Durkon

Is way funnier :smalltongue:

Also I opened the comic again to see if there is any way to determine who says what based on speech bubbles and gave up on that pretty quickly. Sense I would get something like.
Haley:Count Durkula, Jerkon, Undurkon
Possibly Belkar or Haley: Nega_Dwarf, Leechy Veinquaff
Belkar: The Creature Preature
possibly Belkar or Elan: Durkzzaro, deep fang Friar, Nokrud.
Elan: The Thorsaken
Elan, blackwing or V: Pastor Expeiration
Blackwing: Whiskers in the Dark
V or Blackwing: Norse-fur-atu
V: Hel's Shell, The corpse formerly known as Durkon, Greg

Some specific ones on the edge probably could switch categories easily.
I also made the assumption that the closest bubble was guaranteed to be from that person.

Also more importantly! I think in the last panel it is obviously Elan that says Durkon Classic, highly likely that Belkar says Original Recipe Durkon, and then less sure on Durkon(First Edition) but probably Haley.
Thoughts on this? Reasons I am wrong?

I think leaving out a bunch of spontaneous nicknames from Belkar in a thread dedicated to that because we aren't sure which ones are from Belkar and which aren't is actually going against the thread more then including them would be. One is specifically ignoring nicknames from Belkar, the other is adding nicknames from Belkar with the stipulation of we aren't 100% sure which are from Belkar.

It's not a nickname. The cook just explained to Belkar that it's not that kind of steaks that are useful against vampires. It's stakes. It's a homophone.
Considering the holy wafers, I can see the confusion.

"The chick with the bandana" could be considered though. But I'm not a big fan of this inclusion. More a description than a nickname.
