lycanthrope build quesstions

in the MM createing a Lycanthrope - it talks about adding the base humanoid HD and the animal HD...for the hit points
so my question is if you have an animal of 6 HD, and 17 class levels for the humanoid + the 3 Lvl adjust.- what is the Characters ECL level would it be 20? or 26?

ECL equals HD + LA, so depending on the type of werebeing, it could vary a bit.

Per the SRD:


Level Adjustment

Same as the base creature +2 (afflicted) or +3 (natural). In addition, a lycanthrope’s character level is increased by the number of racial Hit Dice the base animal has.


So your level is Animal HD + Character Level + 3 (or +2). In the example, this adds up to 26.

Dragon #313 had a Savage Species-like Progression.

Alternately, and for free, you can just google "savage progression weretiger", and find the free Savage Progression they posted on the WotC site.

If you think of it as a 9-level class that only grants you 6 HD (d8s), it's a simpler way to make sense of it.

But yes, ECL 26 for your example.
