Schoolhouse Werewolf

The message from Jonathan Sandors was unexpected, but welcome, to each member of the 2011 class of Mclaughlin Prepratory School . It was personalized to each person he sent it to, but the message was the same for each person: Their class from Prep was holding a reunion at their old school, and they were invited to attend. Each person who had been sent an invite, for their own reasons, accepted, and made their way to the old grounds.

The buildings and grounds showed the affects that a lack of maintenance brings. The school had been shut down about a year ago due to lack of funding, and it showed. As each teen made their way past moss covered gates and into their old homeroom, where the reunion was to take place, the atmosphere was different than expected. There were hints of smiles and subdued welcomes from everyone who was already there, but everyone had come to the same realization upon entering and seeing no reunion decorations: this was about Tommy G.

All the people invited weren’t just in the same grade, they were in the same homeroom. Like all classes, it had it's cliques and personalities: the popular kids, the kids barely noticed, and all the in-betweens. For this classroom, the kid that had been looked up to the most was Tommy G. His personality was one of a leader, and he held all of the qualities of a kid going places: Smart, confident, likable. If prep did a yearbook with most likely to succeed, he would have been it.

That was, until April 15th, 2009. Tommy had been out going for a walk on the grounds, alone. He did it often, claiming it to be the most relaxing activity he did. Some days he would be out for hours, so no one was alarmed when he didn't come back right away. When he didn’t return by nightfall, however, the school sent people out to search for him. They found him a quarter of a mile away from the dorms, dead.

His death had been deemed an accident by those who looked into it. They claim that he had slipped while climbing a hill, hit his head on the way down, and didn't get the attention he needed in time. To them, it was straightforward.

Jon stood up to address fully assembled group:

“I think by now you've all realized why were are here: the death of my best friend, Tommy G. That event devestated every single one of us. Or at least, it had appeared to. Information surrounding his death has come to light.”

Murmurs from the crowd had started overtaking Jon’s voice. Tommy’s death hadn't quite added up to anyone in their class, but no one had voiced that opinion until today. Jon gave the group a moment to settle before continuing,

“Tommy G.’s death wasn’t an accident. It was murder, by students in our homeroom class."

"I know exactly who killed him.”

Phases:

Day Phase
Standard 48h day phase, voting, discussion, etc., etc.

Night Phase
24h nights, but different then the standard night phase:

Communication about the game will not be allowed in thread, as each player will head to their rooms. However, because of the nature of teenage boys and girls and the relative ease of slipping out, each player has the option of sneaking out of their room. They will then have the ability to perform their night actions and sneak out into a specific room. These rooms will take the form of QT. Players who enter the rooms will be announced in the QT, which can then be used to discuss whatever they want. Because of the intimate nature of the rooms, however, Notes cannot be passed.

Autolynch
You must vote once every 3 days, failing to do so will cause the player to be autolynched.
Going a total of 5 days without a vote will cause a player to be autolynched.

Role Claiming
Screenshots from role PMs are not allowed, as well as quoting role PMs. Claiming you have abilities or a certain role, however, is allowed.

This will be a restricted PM game. Private messages will be allowed, but will be assumed to be the form of notes. Therefore, there are some restrictions on them.

Note: PM from a player. This will be considered to be a note scribbled via pen or pencil on a piece of paper and passed. Every note will be written in a distinct style, which will be placed in the body of the PM. (Each player will have their own distinct type of handwriting).
A note will always have the same format:

Title
SHWW: Description of handwriting

Message:
Body of the note

Anything peculiar will be noted at the bottom in bold and italics. These are only to be written by the narrator.

Sending a note:

Notes are sent by telling the narrator the message and the receiver of the note, who will then pass along the appropriate PM. Never directly send a pm to the player you want to send a message.

Mechanics of notes:

1. The note will be considered to be writing on a piece of paper, therefore there will be one copy in the game. Exceptions to this:
A. A sender explicitly makes copies upon creation for their own use.
B. Someone in possession makes a copy, with their own handwriting.

2. This means notes will be manipulable:
A. Notes can be completely or partially destroyed, and it’s the only method of completely removing a note from play. However, this must be explicitly done by contacting the Narrator. Partially destroyed notes will be indicated as such.
B. A note can be added onto, but will forever be attached(The only way to quote a PM is by using that copy of the note). The previous note will be quoted not by a player, but instead by a writing style. Partially destroyed notes have a chance of not being able to be added onto(Quoted).

3. Every note will be given to the narrator to pass. However, in game, notes can be passed 2 ways:
A. Directly: The player will know who passed them the note(But not who necessarily wrote it, it will still have the title for writing style), but because of the amount of attention it could bring to directly pass it, it runs the risk of being seen by other players (Restricted direct PMs that must have the narrator CC’d, same rules as normal notes). The first note of the day is guaranteed to be passed safely, each time there is a 10% increased chance of getting caught(announced to the player).
B. Indirectly: Main method for passing notes. These will be passed by sending the note to the Narrator, who will then pass it onto the player(s) designated. The note will be completely anonymous, and will have a delay before being discovered.

4. Notes can be intentionally dropped. They will be discovered either in the main room or in one of the classrooms, depending on what time of day the note is dropped. Upon being discovered, they will be read to the whole room. and considered either public knowledge if dropped by day, or known by all players in a room at night. Within groups, notes are always destroyed.

5. Upon death, all notes currently in possession of the player is revealed. If killed by any means during the night, the killer(s) have a chance of seeing some notes on the body, which they will automatically take if they do.

Example notes

Title: SHWW: Small, wide, words connected, slanted left, small tails

Body:
Just so you know, someone is trying to kill you tonight. You should see if anyone can help keep you safe.

AskThePizzaGuy handed you this message directly.

Title: SHWW: large, narrow, block letters, no slant, large tails

Just so you know, someone is trying to kill you tonight. You should see if anyone can help keep you safe.

ATPG sent me this. Should we trust him?

You discovered this on your person. You do not know who the sender is.

Behind the scenes: In the second case case, the original PM ATPG sent and the first person received has to be destroyed, since the note is considered to be written on to make the new PM.

Roles will not officially be announced. However, you can expect some of the more standard power roles with note mechanic and night phase twists as well as some roles that can affect the mechanics of the game that are nonstandard. You can also expect a relatively standard amount of wolves and villagers. Depending on the size of the game, there may be neutral roles.

Roles will be revealed upon death, but the mechanics won’t necessarily be explained.

Victory conditions for village and wolves are standard (Village: lynch all wolves, wolves: equal number of villagers/ neutrals), and any neutral role’s victory conditions will be survival based.

This game is also going to be very heavily dependent on the honor system due to the amount of QTs and restrictions on PMs and QTs. That said, I’ll be understanding of mistakes, but only if I am informed as soon as they happen in case they break the game via PM. If I learn of rule breaks way after the fact, intentional or unintentional, it will most likely result in any offending parties being removed from the game.

I'll also ask that anything that is blatantly exploitative of the spirit of the game be avoided and instead brought up to narrator. I'd rather adjust something midgame then have a broken game.

Game will begin the night of July 1st. No limit on number of players.

Feel free to ask any questions regarding the rules of the game either in thread or via PM. In fact, the reason why I posted this so early was because I figured there would be questions. So fire away.

Yes. Speaking from experience, if you allow unlimited notes, it can get crazy. At the end of Careless Citadel, there was one day and night period where I made the Postman free. I was able to be on pretty much all of the time and was better about ending day/night on time than I am now, and it was still a bit difficult. Looking at just the QT of the most popular person, there were 24 messages over a 40-hour period, from the first message sent to the last message received. 16 of those were sent in the last 3 hours of day... >.<

What would we be using these notes for, anyway?

I don't trust private communications when I cannot verify that only me and my recipient read it.

I am a talkative one in private typically, but I doubt I would advise networking with such an unreliable and insecure medium.

Networks are generally not secure as it stands, especially the way most folks handle them, a network based on these notes is so high risk it's basically a blunder to use them.

Not that I recommend no one use them. What's the point of playing if you're not willing to take risks? Just please, given the odds I rand a villager role, everyone, be careful. Be prudent. Don't be silly with these notes.

Well...
I'll go with the short version:

Work screwed me over on hours(good for the wallet, bad for plans like starting a WW game), so I don't have as much time I thought I would to get everything started tonight. It will be starting tomorrow, even if the PMs nor narration are as shiny as I want them to be. I would do it tonight but I literally just got back from work and I have to be getting to sleep soonish and the time I do have is being spent fulfilling a favor for a friend. Short version of changes, which will be reflected in the opening post later.

1. Rule change: Everyone starts with 30 pieces of paper. There may or may not be opportunities for more throughout the game.
2. Rule clarification: The night quicktopics cannot be shared or used after the night phase. They are to be used only by the people in the room they night they are in it.
3. Writing clarification(Mainly because I think pizza misunderstood part of the rules, and probably isn't the only one): For the majority of players, given a random note they will not be able to determine who's note it is. All they'll be given is a style. Writing styles aren't revealed upon death.
4. No mass claiming writing styles or single notes from each player to claim writing styles. It would ruin the fun. :smallamused: Likewise, there will probably be countermeasures in place to discourage such actions from being effective anyways...

Roles have not been assigned, so you have until tomorrow to sign up still.

TFT
2014-07-03, 07:54 PM
Recruitment is now closed. I'm finishing up the role PMs, and will be sending them out shortly.

One final rule change for balancing purposes:

The first 3 notes directly passed will pass without issue, but every one after will have 20% increased chance of getting caught.

I'll be sending out the PMs, then starting the game, and ending with updating the opening post. By midnight tonight, all of those should occur.

Finally, to help guard against any mass claim attempts, this is the villager PM (Yes, there are villagers)

You are a Former Student (Villager)!

You are just an average student. You do not have any special powers, butare allowed to pass notes during the day and each night you are allowed to choose a room to enter.

You win with the class (Town)

Updated:

I figured out I need to note one more thing:

Any groups that share a night action(The main one being the wolves night kill) have a QT that is explicitly for the action only. No discussion of strategy of any kind, including who to use the action on, is allowed in these QTs. I will be very strict on this, but I figured that people need to know in terms of game play.

Role PMS have been sent to all players except bladescape (Since all players got a PM, I figure it's fine to publicly shame him like this :smalltongue:). As soon as I can send him his PM, hopefully tonight(Cough), I'll post the opening narration and the game can begin.

Each person can send 3 notes during the day phase to anyone in the game without risking it being revealed. Each day, the number refreshes(So you can send up to 3 day 1, 3 day 2, etc.)

I also updated the post above Duck999 before I saw it, so I'd have a look at that as well.

Day One

Jonathon had to quiet the crowd after his last revelation.

I know, many of you might not believe me. If I hadn’t found the clues myself, I wouldn’t have known either.” He paused a moment to let out a cough. “But there was a random note I found the night of the murder that bugged me. So I looked into it. It led me down a breadcrumb trail that allowed me to figure out the murders.” Another pause, another cough. “And tonight, we take our -”

His coughing turned into a fit of constant hacks. It didn’t stop. The crowd could only watch while Jonathan attempted to speak, sputtering incoherent syllables between coughs. Students tried to help, but to no avail. Within moments, he was dead.

The group checked his body, and on it was a note. It read:

If you read this, I’m most likely dead. I knew that the killers were onto me, which is why I wanted to convince the only people who would believe me about the killers. No one I contacted did. If you did not believe me before, my death should be the convincing argument. Hopefully, I have told you who the killers are and can apprehend them. If not, I hope what I said was enough for you to find them.

-Jonathan

The group stood in silence for a moment.

A subdued voice could be heard from the group. “We can’t let these killers escape.”

This led to a flurry of reactions:
“What if we’re next.”
"Who could do this?

“I didn’t sign up for this.”
What are we going to do?
“How could they do that?”
I hope I'm not next...

A voice rose above the others, however. “We need to stay calm. Here’s what we do: Go into lockdown. No one leaves until we find the killers.

The class agreed. They would find the killers, or they would die trying.

Jonathan(TFT) has been killed. He was the Narrator.

Narrator's note: Jonathan isn't my actual name, for the record. :smallwink:

Day One ends now, narration to come soon.

“So… how do we figure out who’s guilty?”

That seemed to be not only the question of the day, but also the question no one seemed to have the answer to. Some of the group stayed quiet, but others started joking around, throwing out puns and jokes about people being guilty because of where they sat, or where they had been on the class roster. In terms of figuring out who the killers were, however, there wasn’t much progress.
Eventually the group decided to question a kid named Flea. Asking him about where he had been the day of the murder, what he thought of Johnny G., why he was joking around. He responded in jokes and sarcastic comments like they had been before. The group however, wasn’t amused by his humour.

“I think Flea killed Johnny G.”

“I agree, he’s way too nonchalant.”

Murmurs of agreement turned into full support amongst the group, much to Flea’s surprise.

“Wait, wait, wait, I thought we were still joking,” he said. “I didn’t do it, I didn’t kill Johnny G. You gotta believe me."

They were definitely not joking by that point. The group of kids, happy to have a place to vent their anger and fear, cornered him and tied him up. One kid found some rope that had been lying around, tied a noose, and presented it to the rest of the group.

“This is what we do to killers.” No one disagreed.

As soon as he saw the noose, Flea pleaded and pleaded with the group, apologizing for the jokes. The crowd ignored him, and within minutes Flea was hung. They went through his bag to find the evidence to prove him a killer, but found none. Flea was innocent.

Disheartened, the group decided to go to their old dorms and continue in the morning. Each kid took a room, thoughts still on who the killer was.

Internet Flea was lynched. He was a Student. (Town)

EDIT: You can no longer choose a room, but you can still perform night actions. Night still ends in ~24h.

In the class there was a kid in the class who often wore suits and held himself rather formally; that and his bigger size caused the other kids to nickname him Penguinator. The tragedy that was the death of Tommy G. had affected him hard, the second murder moreso. It was enough. He would protect his classmates himself, or die trying. He sized up the class, and chose to protect a classmate he thought needed it the most. when the kid went to be, he tailed him, wherever he went. By the time the sun came up, the kid was in his room and no incident had occurred. Satisfied that nothing would happen, he made his way back to his room, taking a quick detour to a restroom. The problem, however, is that on the way he found himself walking toward another kid who had snuck out. He gave a small smile and waved, but the kid just kept walking, without acknowledging his presence. Penguinator decided the kid must just be exhausted from the events from the day before, and kept walking.

When he passed, he saw something swing toward him; he barely dodged the blur. It wasn't just the kid's hand coming toward him, however. In it was a knife. Wordless, the kid came at him again, but he dodged out of the way of the second attack as well. This led to more and more slashes in relentless offensive, with Penguinator forced to dodge each in turn. He tried to counter with some punches, but the kid easily moved around any thrown. He could have dealt with the kid easily at any other time, but the lack of sleep was making him slow. Slow enough that one of the lunges would hit, soon. The fight had to end quickly, or one of those blows would be the last. A particularly far reaching movement gave Penguinator his moment. He tackled the kid, knocking the knife clean out of his hands. A moment later, they both lunged toward the knife.

-----------

A couple hours later, a student came across the body. Even from a distance, the suit told the tale. They checked his body for any notes, but none were there, either having been taken by the killer or never existing in the first place. Another name added to the list of the dead.

Penguinator was killed. He was the Bodyguard. (Town)

You notice four puppies walk out of the science lab. You can't quite place where you've seen them before, but then you realize- they were the class pets! However they haven't aged a day since you last saw them. The golden retriever says," Well we might as well lay all of our cards on the table. Do y'all remember that science lab accident 4 days before school let out? Well we were there, and somehow it granted us the power to speak and to not age."

Who'd kill Penguinator Night 1? Bladescape, that's who. Me too, of course, but lets go with Bladescape. :smalltongue:

Because we all know I'm in the habit of killing off my best friend on night one am I? :smallconfused: That seems a bit odd reasoning, Banjo.

I sincerely doubt you'll get everyone in here who missed Day One.

Example: Sabeki

You'll get me. My convention is finally over and I just finished moving a friend's stuff up four floors. I also won a game of real life mafia, which was a lot easier with strangers than I thought it would be.

How? Or was that a joke? It's hard to tell in a purely text-based environment.

Duck999 for trying to dogpile puppies. Easier than dogpiling humans for obvious reasons, but still.

Day is over because it's been about 48h, but I can't get to the narration until tomorrow morning. Just gives more time for people to choose rooms if they want to since you need to choose before night phase begins. :smallwink:

Also, in case of ties, first to reach will be lynched.

I get the feeling like we're off target. I don't see a whole lot of vote movement which could indicate tension by the guilty parties.

I just wanted to let everyone know I haven't abandoned the game, and it's just been different things interfering with me updating. I'll try to have the game back up and running tomorrow after work. Apologies.
