View Full Version : Which spell schools work together in creative, flavorful, and/or effective ways?

Trying to think of a fun caster-type to play, and although I'm often tempted to super-specialize to be a master of one school, it often ends up falling short and being little more than an optimized one-trick pony. A high-DC (non Shadowcraft Mage) Illusionist comes to mind as being fun and creative but the same thing again and again.

So, to counteract that, I though maybe it would time to try becoming masterful in more than one school. But I don't want to just do an optimized thing (Conjuration and Transmutation and call it a day), I want to be flavorful with it. So what schools (or even individual spells) go well together? Illusion and Enchantment is a classic, but I could see Illusion working well with Conjuration or Transmutation to make things look like they appeared/transformed, and then actually make things appear/transform. Abjuration and Evocation together sound sort of like the Wizard version of a Sword and Board Fighter. Divination and Evocation makes me think of some satellite guided missile system.

What other fun combinations of specialists can you imagine?

(Also, unrelated question and I know it falls under "Ask your DM" territory but I wanted to see people's opinions on it: How would you say the Changeling Wizard's Dual Specialization interacts with specialist-based things like Master Specialist?)

Ever since Libris Mortis introduced the Fell X Metamagic feats I've liked the idea of a necromancer evoker mix who laces their evocations with necromantic energies. Uses Fell X Evocations to apply mass negative levels or mass animate and then uses Necromancy for more enervating or to control undead they find.

Divination + Abjuration makes the anti-mage mage.

Necromancy + Illusion makes a nice little fear mage concept.

I could see Illusion working well with Conjuration or Transmutation to make things look like they appeared/transformed, and then actually make things appear/transform.

I've done this with a Beguiler//Archivist with Spontaneous Summoning and Greenbound. He'd summon up some critters and then add some silent image copies to confuse things and (thanks to a fairly lenient DM) give flanking bonuses. The problem was that Greenbound Summoning is way too strong and the illusions were redundant.

Transmutation and Conjuration work together well, especially with Imbued Summoning.

Enchantment + Illusion makes a really good quintessential "screw with your head" guy.

Conjuration + Transmutation gives you minions to summon and spells to enhance said minions, feels pretty synergistic.

Conjuration + Necromancy gives you mastery over the powers of life and death and makes you an awesome minionomancer. You can toss enchantment on top of that for even more minions or transmutation to buff them.

Necromancer + Transmutation gives you a lot of ways to screw with someone between necromancy debuffs and transmutation polymorph mechanics.

I can see Evocation+Illusion, Conjuration+Illusion being interesting.

Your opponent can never be sure if whatever you're casting is real or an illusion.

Is the Wall of Fire you just cast real or fake?

The Lightning Bolt you just threw?

Hells, you could cast an illusionary Wall of Stone to cover your retreat and then throw up a real one once your enemies see your allies run through it. Lots of options for trickery with creation based schools and illusion.

Looney Toon'em! I love it.

You can go Necromancy+Conjuation+Enchantment and flood the dungeon with expendable sacks of hp.....er I mean allies.
