View Full Version : Cartographer Wanted

Jack Mann

I'd like to start up a homebrew campaign of mine. But first, I need to get a basic sketch of the world done. Any amateur cartographers out there think they can translate my vague descriptions into a map? Doesn't have to be a good map, just needs to convey the lay of the land.

Make a description, so someone can try. I might be interested if your ideas inspire me.

If you don't mind watching a map done in Paint, I might be able to help. After all, it's just elevation and tectonic plates and stuff like that.

I'm currently using Campaign Cartographer 2, and wouldn't mind the practice

This gives me an idea. I'm going to send each of you a description, and then use all three maps (assuming you all wish to try it) in the game. This will be explained in game by the poor state of cartography in Sawreven.

EDIT: I've sent in the descriptions via PM. If anyone else wants to give it a go, please volunteer. The more maps the merrier.

Well...I'll throw in my hat, if there's still space.

I do need to warn you about my scheduling and the horrors relating to it.
School+work+sleep= No time for TM.

Most of my posting comes from work, so I ma yor may not be available regularly (depending of the work load for the week).

I use CC2 and free hand if that helps to categorize things.

I feel like doing some work on AutoRealm. Volunteering for making a fifth map.

I'd go with Autorealm. It's a pretty easy program to get the handle of and it's free.

He's not asking which programs are good, he's asking if we'll do it.

PM Sent. .

EDIT: PM Also sent to Loopy.

As Gez said, Purple, I'm looking for volunteers to make the maps. I'm hopeless no matter what software I'm using. 'Sides, it's more fun this way.

I might try, if I can find out how to do it.

Count me in.

I'll get a PM tossed your way shortly, ufo.

Quick correction, everyone. I made a bit of an error. The Runetrale should be in the corner formed by the Swampsea and the Shield Wall Mountains, not the Bakbrol Mountains. My mistake. If you've already made that part of the map, don't sweat it, but if you haven't, keep that in mind.

I've gotten three maps in, and each is quite different from the others. It's looking rather nice. Keep 'em coming.

EDIT: Four! Four maps! Huzzah!

Hey, Jack, when you get 'em all, would you mind sharing them? I'd like to see how other people worked with your description.

Jack Mann

I'll probably send a PM to all artists (except possibly those who are in the game) with all of the maps. Eventually, once the players have had a chance to share around the maps, I'll start posting them here in this thread (with appropriate credits, naturally).

The game begins in two days. No worries if you're not going to be done by then; I can use the maps later on, and plan on waiting a bit for some of them. But if you're just about finished, it'd be nice to have another map or two before I begin.

I can have mine to you either tomorrow or Saturday.

If there are any cartographers out there who want some more work, I've got a campaign setting I'm helping build. Illustraters are also welcome. Anyone interested?

I'll sign up kpenguin, assuming that you've got some leeway in how soon things have to be done. I'm busier than I would usually be for the next couple of weeks, but next week is Spring Break, so, I'll have plenty of free time then.

The campaign setting is being worked on via Wiki.
The main site is here (http://www.dmtools.org/world)
One of the things I'd like is a new map for Shandura (http://www.dmtools.org/world/index.php/Category:Shandura). I'd also like illustrations for holy symbols for the Shanduran deities (http://www.dmtools.org/world/index.php/Shanduran_Religions) as well. I'm working mostly in Shandura, but you guys can start mapping and illustrating what you feel is necesarry. Contributions to the campaign world itself are highly appreciated as well. You have a long time.

I've shown the maps to the various players, and I'm hoping to introduce more as the story goes along.

Just curious if anyone can tell me how their map is coming along, and when I can expect 'em. That'll give me a notion of when to schedule their introduction to the story.

Once I get, say, six maps, I'll start showing 'em to the artists who've submitted theirs. As the maps show up in the thread proper (either introduced by an NPC or when a player decides to show their map), I'll be posting them here as well.

Anyone besides LoopyZebra up for making maps and illustrations for the World?

LoopyZebra
2007-03-04, 11:05 PM
Hey, kpenguin, did you want those in any specific medium? Because I can't draw with my hands, so it'd be an Autorealm map and Inkscape symbols. I think both would look good, but I figured I'd ask.

kpenguin
2007-03-04, 11:08 PM
Any medium is fine. Some of the maps on there were made with just powerpoint and they look pretty good. I'd recommend doing it on a medium easily edited on computer since the geography of the World will change as more is added.

LoopyZebra
2007-03-04, 11:20 PM
So, will Autorealm maps work for the purposes of the project, or should I use something else? I usually take them and make jpgs out of them, but the original file can be edited with free downloadable software.

kpenguin
2007-03-04, 11:29 PM
Since I'm no expert on map/image editing software, I'd suggest you use your own judgement on that. When should I expect maps?

Jack Mann
2007-03-07, 09:11 PM
So, anyone want to tell me how they're doing?

LoopyZebra
2007-03-14, 10:23 PM
Hey, kpenguin, just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about your request. Life's just been busy, you know.

And JackMann, can we see the maps yet?

Jack Mann

I'll post the others as the players share them.

I've also received a map from Purple Gelatinous Cube, bringing the total of maps up to five. More are always welcome!

Note to self: Next time, don't make the map so bloody BIG. And erase the grid.

Oh well, learning by doing and all that. Nice maps, people.

Actually, ufo, your map could be good for a primitive culture (dragging a stick on the ground to draw)

As I wrote yo Jack Mann, because of my lazyness creativity, I made it look like some drunk tavern patron that needed a bit o' silver for his next cup, and thus made a quick map based on random rumours.

And, thanks... I guess :smallconfused:
