so the description of life link says that you take the damage at the start of your turn. if you had started a spell with a one round casting time, such as summon monster x, at the start of your previous turn, would you still have to make a concentration check?

Oddly enough, Life Link damage does not provoke a Concentration Check on Full-Round casting spells.
Injured while casting (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic#TOC-Concentration):
If you take damage while trying to cast a spell, you must make a concentration check with a DC equal to 10 + the damage taken + the level of the spell you're casting. ...The interrupting event strikes during spellcasting if it comes between the time you started and the time you complete a spell (for a spell with a casting time of 1 full round or more)
Full Round Casting (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic#TOC-Casting-Time):
A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell.
Turn 1 our Life Link triggers at the start of our turn, then we begin casting a spell. Damage occurred before we started casting, so no Check required.
Assume we are not damaged by our opponents during their turns.
BEFORE Turn 2 starts the spell finishes being cast.
Turn 2 starts and Life Link triggers.
At no point were we casting a spell while we took damage, so no Concentration check required.
