View Full Version : Civ 5 Multiplayer 6: There Can Be Only One. (G&K, BNW)

Welcome everybody to the completely-unneeded sixth Civ 5 multiplayer game on the forums.

For this game, instead of the usual earthlike worlds played in the other five matches, I'm looking to play on one of the region maps; specifically, the Highlands script. This is a highly mountainous map with four impassable edges, prone to creating chokepoints and enclosed valleys.

While I'm pretty set on playing Highlands, if enough interested players want to play another enclosed map, I wouldn't see any problem with that other than the ruining of my thread title. :smalltongue: However, there's still room to vote on several world generation options for Highlands itself. Three settings control water and mountain placement:

Mountain Pattern: Ridgelines, Scattered, Ranges, Clustered

Mountain Density: Dense, Normal, Thin

Bodies of Water: Small Lakes, Large Lakes, Seas

Out of these, I would recommend Dense Ridgelines, as it makes for clearer valleys and ranges. I also like Seas for water for the extra layer of impassability, but it might be a tad excessive. :smalltongue:

If I recall correctly, both of those used Seas for the water option as well.

For Civ choice, I would advise not playing a Naval civ, due to the lack of an ocean, but of course anybody's welcome to play one, and would also discourage the Incas, as their unique trait would likely be a bit overpowered on this script. Players-wise, I'm looking for a maximum of eight.

As a last note, I will be playing Siam.

Current Choices:

Luzahn: Siam
OrcusMcP: Aztec
Closet Skeleton: Denmark (DLC)
Driderman: Unknown
Welovefireballs: Maya
Frog Dragon: Arabia
MeatShield: Ethiopia

ONCE MORE INTO THE BREACH, DEAR FRIENDS!

While I'm already in two games and am not sure how to get more slots, I could be down for this as Aztec. Dense ridge lines would be fine, and I'd prefer large lakes.

Luzahn
2014-06-13, 06:24 AM
It takes a five dollar donation to GMR to go from two slots to five. Bit of a shame, but it's a good little service.

OrcusMcP
2014-06-13, 07:52 AM
OK, sweet, I'll get that sorted tonight. I'll let anyone who isn't in a game yet in ahead of me, but if you need to fill a slot, I'll be in as Aztec, as noted.

For Civ choice, I would advise not playing a Naval civ, due to the lack of an ocean,

Unless that naval civ is Carthage.

If everyone who signs up for this has the Denmark DLC, I will play as Denmark, suitability be [redacted]

I reckon someone should be allowed to play Incas. Then we let them grow big enough so that they don't feel picked on when everyone joins forces for a bite of their terrace farms.

Luzahn
2014-06-13, 08:53 AM
Well, all the more reason to vote for Seas. Start near a decent one and you can be a pretty ok amphibious force.

I'm not disqualifying the Inca, but I would hope that a newer player took them as a nice sort of equalizer.

Dense ridge lines with seas is insane. Testing it out in the world builder, one corner is accessable only via a hilly pass and two of the others can only be accessed via the water and again one of those is through a one tile gap.

Someone is going to have to play Carthage, just to keep everyone else on their toes.

OrcusMcP
2014-06-13, 09:28 AM
Actually, thinking about it, Polynesia could be potent on this kind of map as well! Harsh chokepoints mean that moais and upgraded maori warriors will give serious combat advantage in those points. But yes, someone should be playing Carthage for wild-card purposes.

If we are going to ban Inca, is there anyway to keep Mt. Kilimanjaro from being in the game as well?

Luzahn
2014-06-13, 12:17 PM
Naah. If we manage to get Kilimanjaro, we'll just have an eternal war to secure it from everybody else. :smalltongue:

Hey, I'm interested in joining one of these. (I read a decent amount of the first one and it seems too awesome to not give it a try).

I would like to play the great and enduring lord of the Maya, Pacal. Rebuilder of Palanaque and your future president (until 2012 of course). I'm not especially good at the game but I'll give it my best shot!

I'll bite, why not. Never really played any of these more gimmicky maps, and it sounds like it'd be fun to try. Just not with Indonesia. :smalltongue:

I shall be playing Harun Al-Rashid of Arabia.

I too would be interested in this, if you have enough room. I've never done any of the non Earth-like maps, so this should be interesting to see.

I (hopefully) shall be Haile Selassie of Ethiopia.

Edit: I do not have the Denmark DLC. Would I still be able to play a game against someone who does have it? Or do I have to get it in order to play? (I'm willing to get it, I'm just curious.)

Closet_Skeleton

You would have to buy it or not. Do you have Inca either?

If you could play against DLC Civs without the DLC then they wouldn't be banned all the time.

Denmark's a fun one, but you shouldn't feel compelled to get it. Skeleton, would you be ok with playing something else if Meatshield doesn't wind up purchasing it?

Of course, I could go with anyone. As long as they're not Iberian, that random pick in the second game annoyed me.

That's the Giant Multiplayer Robot website. You can sign in with your steam account, but it does require its own password so no-one else can play your turns.

There's also the application that actually passes the save around. You'll need to download that but it's pretty simple to use.

Also, video tutorial. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQNczFe5Icc) I thought it was pretty helpful.

I've put myself down as denmark for now. If that causes problems don't start until I've changed it to Carthage. I'm voting for seas obviously. Maybe cool as well but that might be a bit unfair. Just anything but hot.

For nation.. I'll have to think about it a little.
Shoshone perhaps?

The Shoshone like having lots of space, highlands doesn't give you that, so I'm not sure they're the best choice. On the other hand they are powerful enough to not need to worry too much.

But if you're a complete novice you could be the one we let play Inca (assuming everyone has that DLC)

The Inca advantage in highlands basically comes down to free roads everywhere and over 9000 bonus food because Terrace Farm kicks ass when there are mountains everywhere.

Is Polynesia a vanilla one?

Hmmm, Poland might be good. Straightforward special ability and some nice uniques with a singular focus (cavalry, nothing but cavalry.) Morocco is also straightforward, just have trade routes to everyone and build as many Kasbas as possible.

Luzahn
2014-06-14, 07:55 AM
Polynesia is a DLC as well, though they would be a questionable choice regardless with the lack of oceans.

And I would still say the Shoshone have a great advantage in Highlands. Hilly terrain is easily passed by the Pathfinders, you'll be able to snatch up a lot of ruins.

For a vanilla civ... Russia has a solid bonus that doesn't require any specialized play, though they're good for playing wide. America is versatile as well, but they're often regarded as a weak civ IIRC. Nothing bad about them, but their bonus is underwhelming.

Frog Dragon
2014-06-14, 07:57 AM
Polynesia is DLC. It is also the essence of awful in highlands, since its UI requires coastline and it's UA relates to naval exploration.

Normally I'd suggest Ethiopia for a beginner because the Stele allows for very strong starts and the civ is particularly good when you're not in a dominant position. However, that one's taken. I understand France is pretty straightforward.

Closet_Skeleton

I've gone with Germany.

Aye, I noticed his post after I'd written that.

Depends what you want.

Shoshone are good on defence.

Other defensive Civs are Ethiopia (already picked) and Morocco (also good with trade and deserts).

Carthage can walk over mountains but take damage doing so and are mostly naval but you could in theory link seas together with cities and roads to have a good network. Naval Civs that you should not take are Byzantium, Netherlands and Indonesia. Ottomans, Japan, Portugal, Venice and England are naval Civs that can still work but I wouldn't recommend.

Rome, Iroquois and Russia can have very good production.

Mongols, Huns, Celts, Zulu and Assyria are good warmongers. America is a late game war monger and very powerful at that, but for the rest of the game sits around being lame.

France, Brazil and Sweden are very good but advanced Civs I wouldn't recommend to a beginner. Any jungle bias Civ (incl. Brazil and Maya and Aztecs who have been picked by someone else already) is hard to play for a beginner because you always start weak. Austria can do pretty much anything if you combine gardens (need a adjacent lake or river in your city) with their coffee houses to get amazing great people generation.

Poland, Egypt, Spain, China, India, Greece, Songhai are good all rounders if you play to their strengths.

The one piece of advice I need to give you is not to do what screwed over Indonesia in the first game. There are four policy trees available at the start, Liberty is for having lots of cities, Tradition is for growing a large population to make up for having a few cities, Piety is for religion and a bad choice for a beginner because it doesn't give any growth benefits and Tradition is mostly for war but also helps with lots of cities. Indonsia/Qwertystop made the mistake of going Liberty and then not founding more than 3 cities (to a lesser extent France made that mistake too but he's come back a bit).

So if you do pick Liberty, make sure to have more than 4 cities by 0 AD.

Well, we're up to the eight players planned now, so you might have to wait on the next one.

Generally anything over eight is too much to keep up a steady pace, but I'll leave it to a vote by the current participants to make a decision on maybe increasing the count to 9.

For some reason when I tried to open the save from GMR, the Civ5 process would start, but there would be no window. It did this each time. Basically, an unusable ghost process which I had to task manager kill. I shortcut it by opening the save manually from Civ5. In the save file, it claimed I was Siam, but when it started loading, I was properly Arabia.

http://oi58.tinypic.com/2e5mc60.jpg
I spawned 1 tile away from a river+mountain start. I also have nearby Floodplains, Marble, and 3 Gold for luxury resources. The only thing I'm worried about is if there mountain range is so wide that it starts causing problems later when Mecca is larger. I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of unusable citizens. Still, specialists are a thing.

Luzahn
2014-06-16, 07:15 AM
Yeah, save file is based around whoever started the game, nothing to worry about there.

And I've found that trouble with GMR launching Civ can be circumvented by launching through steam and then just downloading the save when you're already in the menu.

I'm in at the edge, don't know if its a corner yet. There's lots of copper and those annoying jungles but thankfully only one ivory. We have lots of swamp too, which could be better, and no adjacent mountain which may only have to apply to Berlin thanks to the map type. I could have moved but it would have been across rivers, jungle and swamp and a better start location is worth wasting 2 turns at most.

Let the games begin!

No screenshots from me, so I'll try to describe my situation. I've got a nice little river valley with mountains blocking my south with gems, stone, and spices nearby. I'm immediately faced with a decision: do I settle in the valley or do I spend a turn moving my settler next to a mountain for the observatory? I opt for moving my settler. Here's hoping one turn isn't going to gimp me.

As for tech, I'll grab mining and masonry early along with writing to build an early library. It might be worth it to try and rush The Great Library, but then again I don't want to waste production on a building that might not get built (a very real threat, especially if someone has marble nearby.) For social policies, I'll be filling out most of tradition, then grabbing all of Piety for the reformation belief, then finishing off tradition. We'll see what situation I'm in once that happens.

With the turn aside, let's talk about victory conditions and how I'm trying to win. Ethiopia lends itself very nicely to building tall, getting the first religion (+2 faith on a monument pretty much guarantees the first pantheon and religion) and turtling. Their unique unit is kinda crazy, with Drill 1 out of the box; very nice on this kind of map. That, combined with Ethiopia's passive means that any warmongers are going to have a VERY tough time cracking me. A science victory is probably going to be my easiest option. Domination is right out (and would actually hurt me), and culture tends to favor building wide (more places to put great works). I'll still pump out great works, but mostly to combat tourism and sedition later on in the game. A Diplomatic victory is a possibility, but with Siam around I won't bet on getting very many seats. (I'd bet money he'll go Patronage and get the Forbidden Palace.)

Now for my predictions for my competitors. Siam is probably going for a Diplomatic victory while the Maya are probably going science (what with their +2 science shrine). The Aztecs will most certainly start a war or two; here's hoping he's not my neighbor. Germany will most certainly have a big military along with Rome, and I'll have to watch out for the both of them. I'm dearly hoping either Morocco or Arabia are my neighbors and we can form some sort of Alliance against whoever is the biggest military power. No idea what victory they are going for.

That about wraps it up for my predictions. My chief concern in the early game is getting the first or second religion and grabbing the beliefs I want. No matter what happens, this promises to be a very interesting and entertaining game.

Posca

After long and hard search, Roman people finally found a place they can call home. Rome has risen.

Location wise we seems to be good shape with a very long river, two grains for growth and marble for some early wonder action. Thinking of going great library with tradition wonder bonus. I already queued Pottery and Writing.

Obvious starting strategy would be going legions and knocking on someones door but I'm not really sure I want to be that guy. Human players seems to hold grudges much longer. And also I don't really want to knock someone from the game in the classical age. Or get knocked out myself for that matter. We shall see.

MONTEZUMA SPOKE AND THE WORLD TREMBLED!

HE STAMPED HIS FEET AND HIS CITY SPRUNG UP AROUND HIM!

THE RIVER VALLEY OF THE AZTECS WAS BOUNTIFUL AND FULL OF BOTH THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST GAME!

THE MIGHTY JAGUARS WERE SENT TO FIND WORTHY TRIBUTE TO START CONSTRUCTION OF THE ALTAR OF BONE!

Couldn't get a screenshot, as I was in a rush yesterday. Spawned in a decent spot, with Ivory and Truffle. Lots of room for Teonochtitlan to grow.

General plan is to go very tall off the backs of Tradition, Honour and Floating Gardens. I'll be pumping out a bunch of jaguars that I will hopefully be able to keep around for a few upgrades and then send out to sweep away my enemies.

Long term plan is an autocracy conquer spree. Aluminum is going to be very precious on this map for air units, helicopters especially.

Aww dammit, I hate the alter of bone... :smallfrown:

The monk-lords of Sukhothai congratulate our esteemed Aztec colleagues of their achievment in altar technologies, and encourage them to use this marvel to meditate on their place in the universe, rather than, say, hunt down our itinerant monks for cultural development.

The hidden mountain retreat of Sukhothai is born! We have resources! And a lake! Truly, a paradise for man. (For those unfamiliar, the strange tiles on my right are the map's edge, so I look to have spawned in a secure location. Scout first, to determine where my mountain range is able to be closed off, and because Warriors are too slow to scout in Highlands.

I got a pretty nice starting area with lots of stone marble and silver. I'm currently undecided between tradition and piety for my social policies. The halved pyramid cost could be very strong and 3 silver means I could get religious idols for some serious faith and culture. However tradition is just really good. I want to get pottery first for my super shrines along with an Atlatl or two in the meantime, then probably go into masonry for the three quarries and 3 mines I can get.

The monk-lords of sukhothai congratulate our esteemed aztec colleagues of their achievment in altar technologies, and encourage them to use this marvel to meditate on their place in the universe, rather than, say, hunt down our itinerant monks for cultural development.

montezuma will suffer no mockery of his bone altar!

Monk bones are just as good as other bones!

looks like I'll need to wait another round for the ruins.. though it does look like I spawned in food rich plains, which will help later in the game, especially for a trading oriented civ, even more so given the nature of this map.
Also; what does the list of numbers and names on the right side of the screen mean?

Those are player scores, they'll mostly be the same for now but some things like how many water tiles you have will make them slightly different. You can tell when people found cities and stuff even if you haven't met them.

Yeah, it's a bit of a meta-gaming bit in the early game with regards to founding cities, knowing who built wonders, who got early culture ruins or who founded religions. As the game goes on it becomes harder to meta-game the score.

Frog Dragon

GMR:s site seems to be working again.

I think Closet Skeleton, MeatShield and Orcus have all gotten skipped, so we should be reverting. By the looks of it, I'm the last one who actually got to play a turn.

MeatShield#236

I most certainly got skipped; couldn't access GMR for a few hours and when it did go through it was past my turn. Not sure how it happened.

Frog Dragon
2014-06-20, 11:33 AM
I suspect it was GMR kinda-sorta registering my attempts to pass on the save. Every time I tried, it said that it hadn't worked. However, it seems that each attempt I made was still somehow registered on the GMR server, resulting in it thinking it was a different player each time. Thus, for every seemingly unsuccessful attempt I made, the server was told that another player had played their turn and passed the turn along accordingly.

So basically me battling with a buggy server skipped a bunch of you on accident. Sorry.

MeatShield#236
2014-06-20, 11:39 AM

Frog Dragon

I didn't get the reverts to work before the admins of the site removed the phantoms. If they haven't responded to you, I'm afraid the rollbacks won't do anything.

If nothing else works, existing saves can be set up as GMR games, right? You can just take your most recent GMR save, upload it as a new game and we can continue playing from the last turn you actually took.

I rank culture ruins among the higher tier of ruins. Tech ruins might be even better, but culture ruins are still great. They give you your first social policy way faster, which in turn kickstarts your social policy acquisition, and also gives you all sorts of benefits earlier. The true benefit of an early culture ruin is way greater than it initially seems.

OrcusMcP
2014-06-24, 06:00 AM
Early tech ruin usually only puts you ahead 6-8 turns, early food will put you ahead 4-6 turns, while an early culture ruin (especially on standard) will put you ahead by 20 turns.

For early game, I'd much rather have social policy first and then pick up a tech later. Unless the tech is Pottery but that's hardly guaranteed. Pretty much any other tech either requires you to have a worker ready to be useful, which isn't happening until a bit later.

Quick question: I remember in one of the other Civ5 games some basic diplomacy rules were established, like anything not written down on the forum not being binding. Do we want to something like that?

I'd say so. Anything handled by the game engine is as binding as the game engine (defensive pacts, research agreements, etc), if you agree on something to happen right away and one side delivers the other side should deliver, anything else is fair game, nothing that isn't written on the forum has any weight.

Luzahn

Well, when I made a deal with the Shoshone to trade two submarines for various services (and mostly to see if it would actually work) I specified that I was doing the trade as if it was enforced by the game's rules. Anything else should be able to be revoked, with whatever diplomatic consequences it would have.

Although I'm actually inclined to have any deals fully free to be reneged on, if anybody else would be interested in playing it like that. It would prevent any deals without an out-of-character clause from seeming suspicious.

I think, if I had to pick one... I'd go with non-binding.
So betrayal is a possibility, but with the downside that people will be less trusting of you if you do betray someone.

I plan to have them try to make contact. Hopefully they'll be open to trade with our nation.

a city-sate on turn three, and the discovery of nearby fish :D

City-states have dotted borders, while civilizations have solid ones, correct?

Closet_Skeleton

What's this, a new GMRG? Time to check everyone's starts-

Oh wait, I'm still in this one.

You know, I had to check the dotted city state borders thing. But its correct, more or less. It actually alternates black and state colour rather than being truly dotted which would alternate with empty space, but both colours are translucent so whatever.

A game where backstabbing is impossible isn't viable. The event that prompted this was one where I had to backstab someone.

Well, when I made a deal with the Shoshone to trade two submarines for various services (and mostly to see if it would actually work) I specified that I was doing the trade as if it was enforced by the game's rules. Anything else should be able to be revoked, with whatever diplomatic consequences it would have.

You know I'm not supposed to know that right?

On the other hand, its kind of irrelevant now and completely bit you in the ass. "I'm going to prop up a potential enemy rather than build a relationship with my only natural ally, ho hum dah dah dee."

Hey, there's nothing preventing me from sharing that information, and it's well past any point that it could do anything regardless. I'm probably going to just concede game one now anyway, there's little reason for me to keep playing the turns.

And to be honest, that one was done when I was still trying to keep up a balance of power between you and the Shoshone. Because I was wedged between the two of you and both of you had reason to eliminate my science-loving ass. :smalltongue: But again, mostly it was Driderman and I seeing if it could actually work.

Only agreement with actual weight is handled by the game engine. If you want something firm, you have to work it out relative to that.

These are our first words: We have found a home. After many years traveling the desert, we have discovered a land where our people might grow and prosper. But though our days of wondering the desert are over, it still speaks to us. Between the bounty of the grasslands and the harshness of the desert, there you will find our city.

Excerpt from The Tale of Beginnings, the earliest known text of Ethiopian writing.

Yes, I did wait until I researched writing before I posted anything, figured it would be appropriate. Anyway, as you might've guessed, I have a very different start than before. Lots of desert to my south, but grassland (with marble and furs) to my north, mountains to my east, and a lake full of fish to my west. It's fantastic. Also, there's something I've discovered which will basically make me a nightmare to attack. I won't share it until I can figure out how to make screenshots.

And yes, I totally grabbed desert folklore. Yes, I have several workable desert tiles around me. Yes, I am going to get a religion before some people have a pantheon. :smallcool:

Does anyone here know how to both take and upload screen shots?

My scouts have reported an encounter with another nation to our west.
It is my hope that our neighbors to the west will prove allies in our efforts against the barbarian tribes, as well as in our effort to survive in these harsh lands.

Also civ-to-civ communications; should we come up with introductions when we encounter another civ?

Here's a close up. For those of you who don't know, this is Mt. Kilimanjaro, a natural wonder. In addition to its 3 food and 2 culture, it has a semi-hidden benefit: any unit that moves next to it receives a unique promotion for free. This promotion gives any unit double movement on hills along with a combat bonus. Now, on a regular map, this would be a nice benefit. However, because this is a Highlands map this promotion is potentially game breaking. I need to get a settler there ASAP, though I don't think anyone else has found it yet. I also want to note it's right next to a bunch of desert with 2 wheat and incense. I... am in awe.

I'll be honest with you, I started cackling like a mad man when I discovered this. I cannot overstate how useful this promotion is, and once I build a city there ALL of my units will have this promotion. Anyone trying to attack me is in for a VERY big surprise.

In the name of Harun Al-Rashid, the great Caliph of most holy Mecca, we greet you.

From whence do you come? Our lands lie to the southeast of this small pocket of civilization we overlook, but beware. Many nomads harry the lands beyond our walls, and we cannot yet do more than protect what is ours from them.

Our great caliph is not interested in war except with those who threaten Mecca, and will welcome any who merely seek to spread right and civilized living among the barbarians.

HE HAS PASSED THROUGH THE PRISON MOUNTAINS AND COME TO A SEA WITH A RAGING VOLCANO!

HE WILL SETTLE THIS LAND FOR THE GLORY OF TENOCHTITLAN!

Yup, found Krakatoa, it's just off coast to my south. my starting area as been super closed off and i've been having to clear barbarians from chokepoints to move forward, so the amount of the world I can see has been very limited so far. I will have some screenshots next turn.

Just a quick update as I'm kinda busy right now, I'm going to be out of town for a couple weeks so I turned on vacation mode. Hopefully the AI isn't too dumb.

Things are going okay for me right now, I got a monument, a pyramid and a granary. I got a very quick pantheon and went with god of the sea since my city is on the coast and there are 3 crabs right next to me. Plus nothing else is particularly abundant nearby. I adopted tradition and found 2 ruins. One barbarian map and 40 faith. Right now my lands are a little overrun with barbarians as my warrior has been scouting but they're not much threat.

Montezuma lives in a box. A box made of jungle and mountains. There's a hill pass to the south and to the east, but that's it. I am pretty impregnable until air power comes into play. But, I seem to be off in my own corner.

My plan right now is to finish my library, get another Jaguar and then get a settler out to settle near Krakatoa. After that, build up more and settle near my eastern mountain pass.

IT HAS BEEN TOO LONG SINCE MONTEZUMA HAS SPOKEN!

TREMBLE WORLD!

I SAID TREMBLE!

PLEASE?

Yeah, still haven't found anyone else, but I have found a decent amount of city states. I'm exploring both the northern and western edge of the map, if only because I have to. I can't embark yet and there's a whole lot of mountain and lakes in the middle of the map.

My second city should be founded this next turn, right by Krakatoa. I'm thinking, since I'm so distant from everyone, that I'll try to focus on just growing 3 cities to decent size and use them to boost my capitol to ridiculous heights.

And because I am Montezuma, I will be as belligerent as possible. When I meet someone, I will expect tribute or there will be war. I will be a nuisance. I will conquer.

There will be an Altar of Bone to reach the heavens!

Togath

I just keep up with the schedule.
Due to the reset, the AI wasted my settler...
And I can't keep up with the turns in order to just play all of them myself, instead of having the AI do them.
And the game takes ages to start up on my computer(10 to 15 minutes to start up), and crashes if I tab out.

I'm probably going to drop... Just not fun anymore, since I can't keep up, and the AI wasted something I spent weeks getting ready.

TREMBLE ETHIOPIA! DOOM HAS COME FOR YOU!

ONLY A PAYMENT OF TRIBUTE WILL KEEP YOUR SOLDIERS FROM BECOMING THE FOUNDATION OF THE ALTAR OF BONE!

Yeah, finally found someone! It's Ethiopia, though, and I only found them with a scout.

No, I'm not planning on actually conquering them right now, but I plan to be in a state of perpetual war with people unless they offer some form of tribute. I want them to always be worried about me.

This may backfire horribly and get myself dogpiled upon, but I don't care. Montezuma's jungle of solitude is almost impregnable and will only become more so as time goes on. This should be a wild ride. ;)
