As you awake to the dawn of a new day, realisation hits you. This is it, the time has come for the Reaping of the 73rd Hunger Games. This has always been an unforgettable day throughout your life. For some reason, today has you feeling particularly nervous, dread filling your stomach.

You rise and dress smartly, wearing the best clothes you have. As you leave your house, you join the growing throng of people filing towards the reaping itself. Peacekeepers line the way, their immaculate white uniforms and faceless helmets keeping you from recognising any of them. Their presence presses in on you, reminding you of the harsh reality. Two children are going to their deaths. Not today, but because of the events set in motion on this day. The thought hangs over everyone like a smothering fog.

Just like all the other children in the district, you line up with those of the same age as you. Girls on one side, boys on the other. Your blood is taken by a peacekeeper at a desk, checking you in. The older children put on a brave face for the benefit of those that are younger, but everyone is afraid.

Standing on the stage, stationed between two bowls filled with names, a slightly overweight woman looks out on the crowd with glassy eyes. She seems to be paying very little attention to the assembling children...

Please post your character's general appearance and his/her mannerisms as the reaping takes place. How it goes down is completely up to you.

Solomon Dreamspinner, Champion of Freedom, Reaper of Peacekeepers

As the Reaping draws near, every single possibility, every outcome, every scenario, rushes through my head. Three main possibilities occurred to me: Firstly, that the drawing itself was going to be rigged against me; all of the papers would have my name on them; the Peacekeepers had always hated me, and they (correctly) suspected my involvement with the string of murders of eight of their colleagues, but my intelligence combined with my skill at illusion has kept them from actually being able to find any proof. This is one of the more likely scenarios; at eighteen with maximum Tesserae, nobody would be surprised if my name was drawn. However, it would allow me to throw up an illusion to mask my name on the sheet. Secondly, the person reading the slips could be in on a rigged vote, and would call my name no matter what name he or she actually drew. This is far less likely than the first; involving more people in a secret plot than you need to is not something intelligent planners usually do. The third option is that the Reaping isn't rigged at all, but I doubt it; the Peacekeepers have been acting quite smug to me lately.

Sometimes I wonder whether or not it was right to kill those eight men, but then I remember the screams of their victims, the agony they caused under the thin veil of the law, and I feel much better about killing them. My illusions and my creativity were quite helpful, especially combined with the scythe my grandfather gave me before he was killed for protecting a young girl from the whip.

Thoughts swirl in my head all night, and, as usual, I find it impossible to sleep. After a long, restless night, dawn comes. I sigh, and begin the meditation and preparation required to prep my spells for the day.

Preparing Prestidigitation, Ghost Sound, and Mage Hand in my cantrips slots. In 1st level normal slot, I'm preparing Color Spray. In my two Intelligence bonus 1st level slots, I'm preparing Silent Image and Mage Armor. In my Illusion specialization bonus slot, I'm preparing Silent Image.

I snap out of my reverie of thoughts when I realize that I'm running out of time to get ready for the Reaping. I look into my grimy mirror and see my swirling violet eyes reflected back at me, see the brilliance and the cunning and the pain and the righteous fury. I run my long fingers through my jet-black hair in an unsuccessful attempt to straighten it out. I use Prestidigitation to don a black hooded cloak, pull down the hood, wrap a hemp belt around my waist, and place my opal amulet around my neck. I use Prestidigitation again to splash a little water on my face and sort my mess of hair out. Magic is quite useful. I whistle for my Thrush familiar, Chaim, to follow me on the lonely walk to the Reaping.
__________________________________________________ _

When I arrive at the Reaping, the Peacekeepers make sure to stomp on my dignity one more time before I go into the arena, pulling me roughly out of the line and strip-searching me. Twice. With a variety of divination spells.

When I finally arrive in my designated area, I begin to spread entropy throughout the ceremony. I begin by casting Silent Image to create an illusion of me standing in a respectable fashion, then quickly duck down into the crowd and use it as cover against the Peacekeepers' watchful eye. I know that it won't keep going when I start casting my spells, but is was better than nothing. And then the fun begins. I use Ghost Sound to make the slightly tubby woman on the stage think she's losing her mind. I use Prestidigitation to change the color of her shirt to a disgusting shade of peuce with "I love participating in senseless slaughter of hundreds of innocent children and using the money I earn from it to buy clothes that cost more money than these poor wretches make their entire lives" written in neon pink Comic Sans font. Finally, I use Mage Hand to pick up the name jars and flip their contents on the ground when the woman goes to reach for them. I then move back to my position in the crowd, knowing that my name will almost definitely be called, and I'm not surprised when it is.

I move up to the stage confidently, with a well-practiced smirk on my face. I give a facetious bow to the crowd.

I wouldn't have tried to pull off a stunt like that had my family been alive. At this point, nobody in the District has any real ties with me, so they can't punish anybody for my actions. And I already knew I was going into the Games.

By the time Solomon is permitted into the crowd of children attending the Reaping, the Capital woman is already heading over to the bowl containing the names of the girls. With the attention on them, he's able to slip largely un-noticed towards the front of the crowd. As the woman calls out "Camile Rush!", Solmon works his magic upon the unsuspecting woman. The satisfaction he feels at seeing his handiwork is replaced almost immediately by the disappointment at how quickly it was erased again. His alterations stripped away and undone as rapidly as they were worked. It would seem the Capital aren't leaving anything to chance when it comes to the reapings. All the same, his work causes gasps of shock to come from the assembled onlookers. To take such a bold step against the Capital, especially at such a critical time, almost always results in severe action. Nevertheless, he's still able to knock the reaping bowl over, causing a bigger stir amongst everyone watching. By the time he gets back into his position, his name's already been called and Peacekeeper's are moving up to take him up to the stage. They walk him roughly up to the stage steps, allowing him no further chance at casting spells.

Once on stage, Solomon's arm is raised into the air by the woman, "District 9, I give you your tributes. Camile Rush and Solomon Dreamspinner!"

The murmurings in the crowd still haven't died down as the two tributes are lead indoors. Once inside, Peacekeeper's roughly escort Solomon to a sleek looking train. It seems he's not being given a chance for any goodbye's. The escort walks with him, saying nothing except to indicate to Camile where she could wait to bid her own family and friends farewell. One of the Peacekeeper's joins Solomon and the escort on the train, whilst the other waits outside. The interior is incredibly well furnished, more riches are displayed within than anywhere Solomon has seen in his home district. The cabin is empty of people, causing the escort to tut in frustration.

"Marian and Laurel should be here," Solomon recognises the names as those of past victor's, "No matter. Have a seat, eat some food if you want. My name's Tamril, I'll be escorting you through your time at the games. If you have any questions about the process, I'm the one to ask."

Her tone is indifferent, it seems she's not particularly interested in you.

Tamril gives Solomon a blank look. "No different to anyone else, everybody's welcome at the Capital."

Before she says anything else, the door Solomon entered in slides open again. The young girl, Camile, walks in. A look of wonder at the opulence on display is clearly painted on her face. Once she spots Solomon, she grins warmly. The only thing marring her otherwise cheerful demeanour are the tear stains tracking down her cheeks. She walks up to Solomon, and holds a hand out in greeting. "Hey, I'm Camile. How're you holding up?"

As Camile introduces herself, Tamril wanders off deeper into the train. Possibly in search of the absent mentors.

In response, I shrug.

"I knew I was getting picked. That's why I screwed up the ceremony as much as I could. The important thing to worry about right now is our chances at the Games. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? I'm good at planning, illusions, and traps, so my ideal strategy would be to find a place to hole up and make a kill zone with traps and illusions. I'd just need people to protect me while I work.

Where are our Mentors?"

Camile's eyes go wide at Solomon's casual mention of his sabotage"That was you?" she seems suddenly very afraid, her voice little more than an incredulous whisper, "Do you know what they could do to you if they found out?"

Tamril seems to have either not heard or not paid any attention to Solomon's admission. Instead, she comments "Your Mentor's should be here by now, maybe they're watching the reapings live." She leaves the two tributes alone in the carriage, heading deeper into the train in search of the elusive mentors.

Meanwhile, Camile still seems to be alarmed at Solomon's actions, "That really was you, wasn't it?" She buries her face in her hands, "Gods, there's no chance of getting home now..."

"Don't worry about that. The Capital makes non-Career Tributes' lives a living hell anyway. And the way I see it, they can't punish me any more than they already have. I'm in the Hunger Games already. I'll let you in on something I've picked up by watching the Games: It's all about the show. The Capital government likes to assert its authority over us through the Games, but it's really their most vulnerable moment, when they become slaves to their citizens. If they fail to put on a good show, they lose their control over the citizens. Bread and circuses, Camile, that's all this is. Yes, we have to kill the other competitors to win, but our real opponent is the Capital. If we can outsmart them, we can win, no matter how strong our opponents are. So I repeat: What are your strengths and weaknesses? Are you good with people? A strategic mastermind? A good fighter or a skilled hunter? What can you do well, and what weaknesses need to be covered?"

Camile glares at Solomon following his explanation, "I'm nobody special, Solomon. I'm just one of the girls at the processing plant, I'm not even very good at it!" There seems to be more that she wants to say, her frustration bubbling at the surface, but she holds her tongue. Instead, she abruptly moves off to the table, pouring herself a drink of water.

I frown, trying to figure out what I had said to piss her off. My social skills are typically pretty good, but people often confuse me. I half-think, half-mouth the famous Isaac Newton quote, "I can calculate the motion of the heavenly body but not the madness of people" before moving towards her. I don't wan to alienate her.

I walk towards her and try to calm her down.

"What did I say? Look, I'm sorry for whatever I did, but if either of us is going to survive, we need to approach this like one would approach any strategy or plan. We need to start with our main goal: survive the Games. Then, we need to find our sub-goals: utilize our training time to its fullest effect; second, form an alliance with other strong or nice or useful Tributes; third, win over the Capital residents/potential sponsors; fourth, survive the Cornucopia bloodbath; fifth, survive the environmental hazards; finally, survive the other Tributes. After finding our sub-goals, we need to assess our resources. I'm good with illusions, traps, and strategic planning, but the amount of solitude I have in my job as a Harvester has taken its toll on my ability to understand people. Think about yourself. What do you do at the plant? What hours do you work? What hobbies do you have? What are you interested in? Where did you do well in school? Or, if you don't excell in any one area, are you a jack-of-all trades, master of none?"

Camile's expression turns to one of disbelief as she shakes her head at Solomon. Before she says anything, the door Tamril left through slides open. "Yer a bit eager, aint'cha?"

A Spry looking man enters the compartment. He looks as though he's seen better days and Solmon recognises him as one of District 9's victor's, Laurel Flamsteed. "Anyway, th' reapin' round up is gonna come on soon, maybe save yer strategisin' until yev seen that."

He sits in one of the couches, happily oblivious to the apparent tension between the two tributes. Flicking the television on, he turns over to the reapings.

Laurel raises an eyebrow, "Ye'll want te be careful about makin' alliances, lad. At th' end of th' day, everyone'll be lookin' out fer themselves. Tryin' te get someone strong on yer side is all well an' good, but yer still gonna hav' te beat 'em."

He turns his attention to Camile, who by this point seems to be sulking "Ye can ignore my advice if ye wan' te, lass, but my advice is all that's gonna keep yer alive in there."

I consider Laurel's advice, nodding to myself.
"Thanks for the advice. I suppose I should explain my reasoning, though, so you can tell me if I'm on the right track: I have a large killing potential; illusions plus traps plus evocations typically equals a whole lot of death. Unfortunately, focusing so much on the study of magic destroyed my body, leaving me with such little fortitude that a light breeze could kill me. I need a strong ally to protect me in the beginning before I have enough time to set up a kill zone with a **** ton of traps and spells. It can't be a Career tribute because I prefer my potential ally to have a shred of humanity, somebody who would honor our agreement for at least long enough for me to prepare defenses against him. It needs to be somebody who knows environments I don't; the most likely, and therefore most important to have somebody who knows their way around them, are forests. Hence, Odath seemed a good candidate. Am I thinking along the right lines, or am I missing something?"

Laurel raises an eyebrow at Solomon's run-down of his abilities. "'Ow long 'ave ye been plannin' this, lad?" He leans back in his chair, letting out a long sigh as he considers what to say, "Ok, so... Yer a wizard, then. Don't let on te th' others that yer capable o' that..." He rubs the back of his neck, "Yer eager te go fer tha' Odath kid, ye need te consider tha' he may not wan' te work with ye."

Camile huffs at this, drawing a look from Laurel, "An' if sommat's causin' problem's 'tween ye two, yer gunna wan' te sort it 'fore yer in front of th' camera's."

The speeding train catches your attention as it suddenly begins to slow. For the last hour the train has been speeding along mountains and shooting through tunnels. Finally it comes out of a final tunnel and the sun shines down upon it. With it now slowing, the train track curves to the side and allows you to see in the distance the capital.

A gigantic metropolis, it is comprised of countless metal buildings that stretch into the sky towards the clouds. Never in your life have you seen such tall buildings. Scattered along the skyline are floating ships that hang in the sky.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Na6ePbPVYVc/UWH_BAxX2YI/AAAAAAAALgU/WvLuZokDrgk/s1600/The+capitol+Panem.jpg

The train continues to slow, and eventually closes into the city. People line the track, waving to you as the train enters the capital. The capital citizens are an odd bunch, all dressed in bright colors with bizarre hairstyles and some even have odd grafts on their bodies. The sheer number of them decorating the pristine streets is mind boggling to you.

_______________________

Once the train stops, your chaperone takes you to a nearby building. There a team of highly trained capital employees take over cleaning you. They scrub you clean on a level you've never felt before, removing a layer of skin from your body, thoroughly washing your hair, waxing body hair, and picking any specks of dirt that may be under your nails.

After the parade, Solomon and Camile are escorted to a skyscraper building, remaining in their flamboyant chariots for the journey. Most of the other tributes have already left by the time the two are escorted back, only the stragglers from the outermost districts yet to leave. As two bald headed humans open the door for the tributes, a whistle catches the tribute's attention. Turning around, the two can see a rough looking man, a leer on his face, standing beside the tributes from District 5. "Lookin' good, darling!"

The doors close before the two from 9 get a chance to see what happens next, but Camile starts to blush furiously, hugging her arms tightly around her waist as they're lead to the elevator. Standing just outside is Laurel, "Ye' did well ou' there. Ver' nice light show. C'mon, up t' th' flat now."

Waiting just briefly for the two, he steps into the waiting elevator. There's an uncomfortable silence on the way up, something that Laurel appears to notice, but doesn't comment on. Finally, the doors open up to reveal a luxurious apartment suite. A well laid table stands proudly centre stage. Tamril, and a woman recognisable as Marian Green, another one of District 9's past victor's, are sitting at the table sharing drinks. Tamril pays the tributes little attention as they arrive, Marian gives them a friendly nod. "Nice to finally meet you both," She waves an arm towards a corridor leading away from the main room, "You've both got fresh clothes in your rooms, you may want to get changed before we eat."

Camile nods, all but scurrying away to her room. You notice Marian give Laurel a questioning look. The man appears not to notice, instead taking a seat at the table. "Go on, Solomon. We'll chat 'bout yer strategies and stuff once yer back."

Thankyou for your patience, I'll get the personal threads back underway now.

Camile gives a weak smile in response to Solomon's reassurances. "I... Thanks, Solomon..."

She remains silent for the rest of the journey to the apartment.

When Solomon returns to the dining room, he sees that Camile is yet to return. Instead, both Marian and Laurel are seated at the table, apparently having a heated, if quiet, discussion. It abruptly stops before he gets to hear any of it when Laurel turns to look at him. "C'm'ere thn, Solomon. Time t' g't down t' business."

Solomon can't help but notice that Marian is glowering at the male victor from over the top of her drink.

I try to ignore the tension in the room. It's difficult to do so; my curiosity keeps flaring up and I get a nearly-uncontrollable urge to ask what the issue is/was, but I know that I don't want to piss off all of my potential help. Besides, I can't help but like Laurel and I want to have a good Mentor-Tribute relationship with him.

"I'm not quite sure what you know of my strengths and weaknesses, Marian, so I suppose. I'll spell them out. I'm a wizard, with an illusion focus. I'm smart, fairly agile, and a decent enough diplomat and liar, and I'm really good with traps, but I'm physically weak and I don't have good endurance."

Marian doesn't look particularly impressed by this idea, but refrains from commenting. Soft footsteps catch her attention instead. Camile enters the room, now dressed in a far less revealing outfit. I nod at Marian's remark, realizing that I need to work on sounding less cold and aloof when I talk to people. Speaking of which, I definitely owe an apology to my fellow tribute.

"Before we start talking strategy, I need to do something. Camile, I'm sorry about what I did. It jeopardized both of us recklessly and for no reason. Other than my own ****s and giggles. I was willing to accept the consequence to me, but I hadn't thought of the risk to my fellow tribute. So I'm sorry. What can I do for you to begin to make it up to you?"

Solomon is vaguely aware of Marian and Laurel sharing a look following his apology. His attention, however, remains firmly fixed on Camile. For her part, Camile lets out a long sigh before looking up at Solomon. She smiles sadly at him, "What's done is done, you can't change it any more than I can." She reaches across the table, giving his hand a friendly squeeze, "The apology is appreciated, though."

As she lets go, Laurel coughs, "Righ', now tha's out 'f yer systems. Camile, why don'tcha tell us wha' yer good at."

Self-conciously tucking a lock of hair behind her ear, Camile replies "Well, uh, it's like I said to Solomon back on the train. I'm really not anyone special. I'm good with people-" Laurel gives a derisive snort at this, causing Camile to cast her gaze down at the table, "And, uh, and..." Marian, giving Laurel a harsh look, gets up and walks around to Camile.

"It's alright, we're here to help you..."

This seems to give Camile enough courage to continue, though she still seems downcast "There's really not much more..."

Camile smiles weakly at Solomon's compliment, any response she wanted to give was cut off by Laurel. "Inna nutshell? Fly under th' radar. Ye don' hav 'nough time t' learn anythin' more'n th' basics of anythin', so don' show weakness by tryin' t' do stuff yer no good at," He takes a swig of his drink, "'S also yer bes' chance t' get yer measure of th' other's. Marian grimaces at Laurel's summary, and Camile looks particularly appalled at the thought of such outright manipulation.

I nod grimly at Laurel's comments, but realize that such cold manipulation has two edges; if we become friends with somebody, the bond goes both ways.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The next day, after training, I comment to our mentors and Camille about a thought of a strategy that popped up in my head.
"My specialty, illusion, could work substantially to our favor, especially due to that out-of-control mage, Lox. I was thinking that we could create an illusion to make the others believe that Lox cast a spell that destroyed the Cornucopia. It would be a large-scale, risky illusion, but it could be done, and its benefits would be twofold: First, many would believe the Cornucopia was destroyed, giving us a head start on the items in the Cornucopia. Even if they saw through the illusion, they would likely be confused and we would seize the initiative. Secondly, many would probably believe it was Lox who destroyed the cornucopia (or, if they saw through the illusion, they would think it was him that attempted to fool them), causing them to see him as a threat and a common enemy and sowing confusion and anarchy amongst the others. Again, it would be a risk, but one that might be worth taking."

Laurel grins broadly as Solomon outlines his plan, "Now tha's good thinkin'. If ye c'n fool 'nough people, then ye've got a good shot at th' goods in th' middle."

Marian looks much less impressed by the idea, instead asking "Is this 'Lox' likely to do something like that? Do you know how everyone else will react? You've got to think about these things, if you go with such a bold strategy, you need to know how everyone's going to act before hand."

The cold discussion of strategy seems to have left Camile behind, she holds her arms closely around her waist, glancing from one mentor to the other as they talk, shaking her head in bewilderment ever so slightly at the same time. She throws the occasional glance toward Solomon, giving him the feeling that she may wish to talk to him in private.

I glance over at Camile, then nod.

Then I quickly address Marian's comments.
"Those are valid questions; I'll try to observe Lox later. But from what we saw today, such an act would be in character for him; he broke the monitor on the survival knowledge test with ice magic and held a guard under water with the shock stick. But I'd best be off to get my rest."

At which I move towards our rooms before talking to Camile.

"What's up?"

Marian raises an eyebrow at Solomon's description of Lox's actions, but otherwise remains silent. Laurel looks all the more pleased at hearing about how unstable the tribute from 12 may be. He nods his head at Solomon's suggestion of getting some rest, "O' course, ye've gotta keep yer strength up."

It doesn't take long for Camile to follow Solomon. She gestures for him to come into her room, muttering "I'd rather not be overheard."

Once Solomon's entered, she closes the door and lets out a deep sigh. Eyes closed she slumps with her back against the door, sliding to the floor. She sits like this for a few seconds before looking up again, a sad smile on her face as she does so. "For what it's worth, I think your plan sounds fairly good. It should give you the time you need to grab at least one bag, if nothing else." She sighs again, head drooping, "I'll... Try... And buy you some time as well..." She pinches the bridge of her nose, hesitating before continuing, "It probably... Won't be much time... But it could make the difference you need..."

She looks back at Solomon, smiling softly again, "You've got a good chance, you know? I..." Camile hesitates, haltingly continuing, "Want you... To get back home... To the fields... For both of us."

We can grab twice as much stuff from the cornucopia, and scavenge more food and supplies and be better in fights. Plus, I need a full night's rest to recover spells and I can't sleep during the Games with other Tributes hunting me. She sniffs, rubbing her eyes with the cuff of her sleeve, "If I can get you even just another ten seconds... It could... You could... You might go home..."

Fresh tears stream down Camile's face, leaving her unable to speak. She silently sobs into her knees.

I look into Camile's eyes with concern and worry. "I don't want you to lay down your life for me. Ultimately, though, I can't stop you from doing so, and if you decide to do that, I promise I'll use every trick I know, every resource I have, every ounce of life and effort I can use, to win the Games."
I walk to Camile and embrace her, trying to soothe her.

When she's calmed down a bit, I give her a brief kiss on her cheek.
-------------------------------------------------------------

When the day of the trials come along, I enter the room with a plan.

I nod to the judges, ensure they are paying attention, then words of arcane power flow from my mouth and I vanish from sight. More words can be heard before I reappear, body aflame. A wall of fire emanates from my body and burns through a dozen targets, turning them to ash. My flaming form cools back down and then I surge back into a burst of electricity, body half-consumed by the energy as I arc towards another group of targets and destroy them. Finally, my body dissipates into a black gas before condensing in an implosion of black light on many of the remaining targets, crumbling them away into nothingness as my form dissipates, vanishing again. I reappear in a flash of blinding light with a smirk on my face.

"Solomon Dreamspinner, District 9 Male, humbly at your service."

Solomon walks into the room, then casts the spell Vanish. During the invisible rounds, he casts Silent Image to create the illusion of him aflame, then consumed by electricity, then into the black gas. The destroyed targets are also illusory, having been created in strategically placed spots whilst the judge's attention was on the fake Solomon. The judges get dc 19 will saves to disbelieve the illusion. The flash of light is a Blinding Ray fired at the judge in the center as the illusion dissipates in my extra round past concentration from Extended Illusions.

Solomon is dressed in a grain-colored tunic over a earthy brown shirt and loose light-brown pants. Two dulled obsidian sickles sit crossed in a loop of cloth on his left. He walks to the stage confidently, trademark smirk on his face.

Caesar grins broadly, applauding Camile as she's lead off stage. “Now, next up we have Solomon Dreamspinner, also from District 9! Come and take a seat, no need to be shy!”

Caesar gives Solomon a firm handshake as he reachs him, gently pressing him to sit in the offered chair. Once they’re both comfortable, he leans in close and, with a side glance to the crowd, “Now, Solomon, I have to know… How are you finding the Capital?”

"I like it. Plenty of rich food, comfortable beds, showers it would take a genius to figure out how to work. It probably helps that I don't have anybody to miss back home. Overall, I like it."

"I imagine it's a bit of a culture shock for you, coming to the Capital after the fields of District 9? What do you think of it all, Solomon?"

"Like I said, it's new and extravagant. I haven't have any living relatives for a few years now, and I work in solitude as a Reaper, so having this many people paying attention to me is strange and unfamiliar, as is having people to talk to on a daily basis."

“Solomon, I'm well aware that I might be overstepping here, but any chance you can share what you’ll do in the arena? I promise it’ll just stay between us.”

The audience shares a soft chuckle at Caesar's joking assurance of privacy.

Solomon tilts his head, thinking of a way to word his answer.
"My strategy? Don't die. Find a base. Set up an established kill zone. Win by attrition; the flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long."

"Now... As I'm sure the audience will recall, there was a bit of trouble with the broadcast from your Reaping, so I'm afraid we didn't really get a good look at your reaction. Would you mind telling us all how you felt, knowing that you'd soon be taking part in our games?"

"Ready. Not happy, but ready."

“And I’m afraid that’s all we have time for. It has truly been a pleasure talking to you, may the odds be ever in your favour.”

Camile returns the hug, clutching tightly to Solomon. Eventually, she releases him. Her eyes reddened from crying, she brushes her cuff again to try and catch any lingering tears. "I'm... "I won't hold you up any longer, then." She gives Camile a friendly grin, "Good luck with the interview tomorrow."

"Thanks Hayl," The tone of Camile's voice makes it sound like she's smiling, "Hope it goes well for you, too."

Camile heads over to the elevator, returning to the shared apartment. Hayl, meanwhile, turns her attention to Solomon. "Hey, I know we've not really talked before, but we need to now." She rubs the back of her neck as she considers her next words, glancing over at the elevator, "Camile thinks a lot of you, and she's a sweet person. It sucks that she's in this situation..."

When she turns her attention back to Solomon, her face is an impassive mask, "I'll level with you, the career's want me to join them. I've persuaded them to let Alex in too. I don't really want to fight Camile, but I will if I have to. I don't think the reverse is true." She motions to a couple of benches that sit near the exit, taking a seat herself, "The way I see it, you've only really got one choice. And I doubt you'll want to take it. Camile's the type of person who'll get hurt just by seeing other people die. I bet she couldn't watch the games before she came here, and I bet she has no idea what she's going to do once she's in." Hayl sighs, taking a steadying breath, "It's not nice, not that any of this is, but the only real solution I see is to end her suffering as quickly as possible. Wait until she's asleep, kill her cleanly." She looks up, straight into Solomon's eyes, "Do you have it in you to do that?"

Tundra. Damn; I've never liked the cold. Ah, well, the snow should make effective drinking water–if it's not poisoned somehow. But heat is the ultimate goal, heat and food. And since my survival skills are piss-poor, that means I'm going to have to try for the goods in the Cornucopia. Here goes nothing. I think to myself as the 60 seconds count down. I then move towards the cornucopia, as if in shock.

Seeing Sel and Sheila I weigh my options, then decide to observe more before going in for the kill. I don't have any weapons, but I do have my spells. If I can hit with Color Spray, I could potentially loot any weapons they might have on them and use them to finish them, or just use Burning Hands combined with my fists. There's more than one set of footprints in the snow around Camile. One pair is clearly her own, coming up from the south then looping back around following Solomon's warning. The second trails Camile's for a while before diverting into the forest. The exit point isn't clear.

I smile and finish Camile's sentence for her.

"Will be okay once I get some sleep and blow a spell on recovery. A more relevant question would be 'are you okay?' And is there anywhere we could lay low for a while?"

Noticing the footprints, I deduce that they're almost certainly Trefoil's tracks. I feel a deep sense of sorrow as I realize the magnitude of the event we're in. Good people are going to have to die if I'm going to get home. The blood on my hands already haunts me, and the people I killed were sadistic oppressive murderers.

Camile's clearly uncomfortable with Solomon ignoring his injuries, but rather than chastise him she just clenches her jaw and nods. "I'm... I'm not hurt, I just ran and they didn't come after me."

She shudders, "I didn't see anywhere safe, there's just an open plain to the south. We could try hiding in the forest?"

I silently curse at my stupidity. Perhaps my injuries are distracting me from thinking rationally. In any case, I can't show how hurt I am to Camile; it might make her despondent or depressed about our chances. And in these conditions, optimism is our friend.

"If we wait until I can get some rest, I have a plan. I can cast a spell to heal me up to my potential, then sneak up on Sel and Sheila whilst invisible. I have a series of two spells that should take care of them, though it probably won't be pretty. The first is to disable them-a Color Spray spell to blind and stun. The second will finish them off.

Camile leads Solomon into the forest, furitively looking around for pursuing tributes. She eventually seems to relax a little. Where the two now stand has little snow on the ground, and trees obscure vision beyond a few meters. "I guess I'll keep an eye out for you then," She smiles nervously, "Have a good rest."

I'm going to need a pair of perception checks from you, the second with a -4 penalty (due to drowsiness). I'm also going to be needing saves against the cold, details on that to follow in the main OoC.

Shouldn't need to have to roll a save now; a fire is a significant heat source.

That's fine, fire does indeed keep the cold away enough for it to not be dangerous. Not a whole lot to say for this update other than to ask if you want me to make any perception checks I might need from you for you or if you'd rather I prompted you for them?

Solomon's rest is disturbed early on in the evening. As the sun slowly sinks toward the horizon, the silence is broken by Canon fire. One, two, three... The fire almost seems to mark the passing seconds. A total of ten shots are fired. An echoing silence follows. It is then that the Panem anthem blares across the clearing.

It isn't too much longer after the canon's sounded that Solomon finds himself being shaken awake. Head muzzy from drowsiness, he's nevertheless aware of Camile urgently muttering to herself, "Please wake up, please wake up, please wake up..."

She glances behind herself, the harried look on her face starkly outlined by the light of the fire. When she looks back at Solomon, she realises he's starting to wake up, "We have to get out of here," The urgency in her whispered warning is unmistakeable, "there are people coming. I'm sure of it."

Confusion clouds Camile's face briefly, before turning back to resolve, "Something's got to be happening up there... This has to be our best chance at a distraction."

The sound Solomon hears is very familiar. It sounds like a simple ward, used to create an alarm around a specific point. This particular one must have been keyed to give off an audible sound when triggered. What it's being used for, however, is anyone's guess.

IamL

I consider her words, but I'm not very inclined to travel into a potential trap in my condition. Still, from what I could piece together of the spell, I can only map out a few plausible scenarios. The first is that the Careers started hunting, activated Lox's alarm spell, then killed him. This is the most likely scenario, and from what I know about Alarm, it means that the Careers are close, maybe only a hundred feet or so away. The second most likely is that someone else, probably Sel or Sheila, attacked him. The third is that Lox interrupted an alarm himself and someone killed him in self defense. This isn't particularly likely; I have to admit that Lox was good at what he did. Synapses fire and I decide that Camile is probably right. I whisper to her.

"That noise was an Alarm spell. Presumably, someone activated it when attacking Lox; he was an accomplished wizard. But based on what I know about the spell, the Careers would have to be quite close–about a hundred feet or so away. You're right; the Cornucopia is probably our best bet, unless you think you could talk Sel and Sheila into giving us a truce--they're probably still fairly close by and we could track them. We have to move quietly, though, and we have to move now."

And with that, I start moving stealthily across the ground.

After several tense minutes of moving back through the forest toward the cornucopia, Solomon and Camile finally reach the edge again. The clearing hasn't changed much, but the falling snow is now starting to affect visibility. All of the bags have been piled up at the mouth of the Cornucopia now. Two tributes are sitting at the edge of the circle of bags.

"Hayl..?"

Sure enough, it's the two tributes from District 5. They look like they're in intense discussion, Hayl casting the occasional furtive glance at the impassive Goelev a short distance to the north.

Camile gives Solomon a worried look, "Solomon, I don't want to try and fight them. They were both so nice to me."

Standing straighter, and gripping his sword, Goelev yells out "Hayl! Grab a knife, Alex! Spells! Now!"

He warily moves forward, keeping his eyes fixed firmly on the new arrivals. Hayl rushes over to a couple of the bags lying at the cornucopia mouth.
