Tortise is still touring? Wow. I kinda forget about them now and then.

Wilco, The Lips, Spoon, Brizillian Girls, Feist,...sounds cool. Lucky TM : )

Kinda sounds like Coachella (http://www.coachella.com/) which I go to every year.

edito - Wow, I just caught DJ Shadow's name on it. Bloody awesome. Now I'm jealous.

Amotis, is that this year's lineup?!

The reason I ask: Rage is on there. If that really is the lineup, looks like TM goes to Cali...FINALLY!

Amotis

Yup, sunday's set. But I would hold off for certain until the date closes in. Acts are known to drop sometimes. I might be going all three days this year : )

edito - on second thought, if you want to buy them straight from the company they're running out fast. Most people just buy 'em for ebay and stuff which is where I usually get them.

Where abouts in Cali is it? I couldn't find anywhere on the first, quick glance I made at the site.

I have a freind in Sainta Rosa, but I have feeling its a ways off.

Indio, California. It's by Palm Springs kinda.

Sooo...further South of Sainta Rosa?

Regardless, Great bands + Sunshine - humidity = Perfection.

Do you mean Santa Rosa? (Psst. You're so white.)

If so then much much further south. Santa Rosa is closer to San Francisco. Indio is closer to LA/Long Beach Area. So quite a while. 2 day drive maybe.

And yeah, awesome music festival. I recommend it for anyone who loves music. Any kind. Just awesome bands and a cool vibe.

An incredible lineup!! Sooooo jealous...It's so far away from where I live. Go, if you can, go, do it for all of us who can't :p
Listen to all of it! ^^

Wilco, Spoon, Decemberists, Fountains of Wayne, Tortoise, Flaming Lips, White Stripes, WEEN!...Oh my.

Take pictures too : )

How close are you getting? I've worked concerts before and it ranges. Sometimes I've gotten into the pit. Sometimes all I hear is the bass thump and see people's heads.

Specifics I don't know.

I do know that there are two tents; one in a off stage and one in the main.

From all that I've been told, we are only working a max of 6 hours a day, so I should be able to get a shot at some of the mainstream groups. I'm hoping to get more information in the coming weeks so that I can plan out which group/how long/etc. You know, pertinent information to have at music festival.

I'm REALLY excited about the comdey tent.

I think I'm more stoked about getting paid handsomely for little-to-no work and getting in for free. The camping part I could do without, but I'll survive. I didn't make it up to Life Scout for nothin'.:smallwink:

oh it's just all so great and I can't help but be giddy over it.

Apart from the awesome lineup, I have to tell that my experience in big music festivals is not very positive. I think it's not the best way to hear the music...But it's an experience on its own! :D

Seconded. I had a horrible first music festival experience. But I'm glad I got past it and now I go to them whenever I can.

Tips: Find and get the time for the sets ahead of time. They should release them on the website when the date draws near. Plot out ahead of time who and what you wanna see, what stage, and when. For the headliners you have to get there pretty damn early. Which is why I usually look for the underdogs most of the time and watch a lot of their shows. Just know that you won't be able to see them all and that it's more effective to sacrifice a few bands to see the ones you really wanna.

That being said, bring water, bring a lot of money (food is expensive), make sure your stuff doesn't get stolen while you sleep, and wear comfortable clothes. No one cares what band's shirt you're wearing.

Noted.

Honestly, there only maybe three...ok four bands I really want to see. Mostly just to experience them live and see if they stand up to my expectations. I'm more interested in the comedy tent.

There was a rumor that The Allman Borther's Band were going to be there, but nothing substantiated. THAT would be something worth fighting through the masses to get to.

I likely wouldn't go if they were playing across the street. The only band i'd be remotely interested in seeing would be The Police.

What's wrong with seeing new bands? Shows are a great way to get into good bands you never knew about before.

I pretty much only listen to classic rock and country, and virtually none of the bands on that list fall under those categories. Yes, I did see that Dierks Bently was in the list, but I'm not really a fan of his. Seems to me that most of the bands on that list were alternative and I have a dislike that genre of music.

For those of you going, I highly recommend Xavier Rudd and Sam Roberts.

You should smuggle me into Xavier Rudd's show..

Come on dood, you can't tell what kind of music the band will play by looking at their name.

And it's a music festival, a huge mix of options, styles, and noises. I promise you, if you went, you would find at least 2 bands you liked. I mean look at all the choices, the OMGthisisso****ingfun Flaming Lips, the immortal DJ Shadow, or the older folks like Harper or Wier. Huge selection and even inside that indie/alternate scene you have huge differences. Whether it's the electronic pop of Junior Boys, the post punk of FF, or post rock, or many others. Not only are indie/alt bands massively separate from each other, it's a music festival, so there are even bands outside that wide genre.

Wolfmother is a new band, but it really does an excellent job of capturing the Classic Rock sound.

Fist I care for indie, punk and post rock music less than I do alternative. But, regardless of who's coming, I can't go even if I wanted to. I'll be in the middle of working roughly 60 hours on those four days.

Alright dood, but you can't tell what kind of music a band will play just by their name and their genre. Indie and Alternative are probably the most stupidly diverse genres out there. They actually have nothing to do with the music itself.

So music should come before judgment, always.

@ FDL - I was way too excited at the time to give aflying rat's arse about spelling (see many of my other posts, also, for my horrible typing :smallwink:)

@ Mr Cube - ElfLad had a good point about WolfMother. Lots of people are comparing them to Led Zeppelin (don't care if it's spelled wrong either :smallwink:). That isn't to say that they ARE the Zep, or even on the same page as the Zep, it's their sound that is very closely related to (and I think influenced by, if recall correctly) the Zep.

Amotis - brings up a good point, but I need a soapbox to stand on before I get into labels s;lapped on artists and generalizations based on those labels. But the most important thing is to keep an open mind with music. You amy get shocked by what's pretty decent out there. Me ersoanlly, I'm still shocked I like Damien Rice so much.

I think most music festivals include an incredible, wide variety that jsut about anyone can go for at least one day and get their fix for their perferred style. (ie. Damien Rice, The Roots, Dierks Bentley, Ziggy Marley, Tool and Gov't Mule are playing on day [me thinks])

Amotis, it seems like what you're telling me to do would be the equivalent of me telling you to go to Ozzfest because it will be cool, but you don't like hard rock at all.

Amotis
2007-03-07, 08:46 PM
All I'm asking of you is to keep an open mind. Especially when dealing with genres. Especially dealing with huge open experimental genres like indie and alt where this is no real "indie sound" or whatever. Don't be like, "I don't like Spoon so I'm not gonna like Tokyo Police Club." That's like me saying, I don't like Zeppelin so I'm not gonna like early Sabbath. Ridiculous right? Exactly.

FdL
2007-03-07, 08:54 PM
That's a serious lot of good music coming from the stages in this festival, regardless of genres and labels. Which are often bad as they generate this kind of attitudes in people.

But what Amotis is trying to say is that even within the labels "Indie" and "Alternative" there's a huge diversity of music. Huge. Unlike other tags like "metal" and "classic rock", because in most cases is the opennes to different influences and styles what defines the concept of "alternative" music.

That said, the lineup looks to be really varied, for a discerning eye, that is.

Edit: Listening to Spoon's last, thanks for the mention Amotis. This record rules so much it's unfair for other bands :D It's got this sexy sultry groovy way of rocking.

Bring a video camera or something and film the Black Angels.

Also, if you POSSIBLY can meet the bands, tell the Angels to come to Canada.

Man. I'm jealous. The Black Angels... yeah.
