I don't know where to post this exactly so excuse me if I'm in the wrong forum to ask the question but I think out of all the D&D players here someone should be able to answer me.

What is this?

I was looking through my old Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual [2140] and in the index page 384 I saw this guy.

At first glance it looks like a Minotaur but it's different. It's not exactly a Minotaur because they have them and they show different art, they're obviously more bulky and have more muscles and mass. It's not a Satyr either though, or goat man whatever you call them.

Is it some kind of Minotaur people? Half-Minotaur?

It's official art printed in the book from TSR so it's not Homebrew. I'm sure there is some kind of Minotaur-folk done up somewhere but I want to know what this is? I can't seem to find the image anywhere else so I was hoping someone here would know.

The artist has a H-like symbol by the left ankle I guess I could do some research on who the artists are if they're credited and find it out that way maybe but it's so old that I doubt I'll be able to find anything.

The artist's name is Tony DiTerlizzi. He was the main artist for 2nd edition, from my understanding. As to what in the Nine Hells that creature is supposed to be, I'm not sure. I have seen other "goat men" things before... I called them capritaurs, when they needed a name, and went on my merry way.

It looks like a minotaur to me. Probably just another take on the art. It's not like that hasn't been done in D&D.

Yeah, that's a DiTerlizzi rendering of a minotaur. I wouldn't call him the main artist for 2nd edition, but he did a lot, and really took off with Planescape.

He did almost all the art for planescape, but also a good amount for the monster manual.

I'm more wondering at that weapon he's wearing. Is that the world's shortest glaive?

Variation on the axe. I tend to associate it with China, but that could be wrong.

The artist's name is Tony DiTerlizzi. He was the main artist for 2nd edition, from my understanding. Ahh. Yeah I was just going to come back and post this I checked the book and he's the first name under Interior Illustrations: Tony DiTerlizzi (pencils, inks, and colors on insects, crustaceans, faerie-folk, and miscellaneous creepy things).

I looked him up hoping to find the artwork on his website or somewhere online to maybe get a title and some insight to what it is. I see he created the Spiderwick Chronicles and has a lot of old D&D 2nd Edition artwork (http://diterlizzi.com/home/games-gallery/) but for the life of me I cannot find this specific one.

If anyone can, now that we know the artist name, please link it here.

Or if anyone remembers having seen this somewhere else and knows what it is please let me know still.

I might use this until I find out what it's suppose to be. I kinda liked the half-minotaur but i don't know how I would explain it. I would like a ibixian/centaur/minotaur like civilized race and this artwork is perfect for it.

Maybe some of the variant Taladas minotaurs from Krynn?

Well I found this...

Off his blog site (http://diterlizzi.com/home/1995-bridging-the-gap/) it says,

"Most of this work was created late in 1994 and throughout 1995. I had been illustrating for Dungeons & Dragons and Planescape (http://diterlizzi.com/home/games-gallery/) for a couple of years at that point, and was visualizing how my art would look in books for children. Though my style and technical skills were becoming more apparent in these images, they all lack any real sense of exhibiting action or portraying a sincere moment. At that point, all I strove for was to create finished scenes in a style emulating my favorite artists."

It's another art piece from T.D. and when I clicked to save it, the title was already "Minotaur" simply minotaur... so it's looking like it's just a Minotaur or his take on one. It kind of looks like the other one in design so I think it's Tony's take on minotaurs. Whatever it is, I like it and I think i'll just have to mish and mash and create a new species/race myself and my world using his artwork.

Yeah I saw them, there's a lot of lore and stuff I can borrow from the Taladas, civilized minotaurs.

That depends on how tall he is.
