RAW, no. Should you allow it? Depends on the source of the trample. If the Paladin is something that has trample as a special ability, there's not much reason to not allow him to get his class level to damage on the trample (RAW he still can't as it's not a normal attack, as there's no attack roll). However, if he's using the feat and having his horse get a hoof attack on them, he shouldn't because he can't smite through his companion.

It's coming from a purchased Celestial Warbeast Spinosaurus. Probably should have mentioned that sooner.

It depends who has the Smites.

If it's you, the feat Smiting Power lets you apply a Smite to an Overrun or Bull Rush attempt, adding the to-hit bonus to the opposed roll and then dealing the Smite damage if it's successful. The rider has to be the one with smites and the feat in this case, because he is still considered the overrun-er for a mounted overrun - the mount merely gets to roll instead of him.

If it's the mount, all you need is the Trample feat. On a successful mounted overrun, the mount gets an attack against the enemy, so you can have it smite there.

I suppose if you could communicate with the mount, you could tell it to overrun instead of performing it yourself, but then it doesn't get to make the attack against the prone enemy because 3.5 is stupid.

In Pathfinder, they are indeed compatible. You can smite on nearly anything, including ranged attacks, special attacks and even spells, so long as they do damage.

Right, the Celestial template's smite evil can occur on any attack by that spinorsaurus. If the trample is a special quality of the beastie, RAW you can't use smite on a trample, but there's no real harm in allowing it. If the trample is because of the trample feat by the rider, you most certainly allow it because it's an extra attack not automatic damage on a successful overrun.
