i'm trying to apply the umbral template from savage species to a regular Mind Flayer from the monster manual. i'm pretty sure the Mind Flayer does lose all it's psionic powers but, what about telepathy and spell resistance? can it still full attack with it's tentacles to deal str damage? The mind flayer seems much less scary as an umbral creature which is a little tragic, how could a player boost an umbral mind flayers power?

"Attacks: The creature loses all its attacks and gains an incorporeal touch attack."
It gets to make one incorporeal touch attack per round, even if it full attacks.

"Special Attacks: An umbral creature loses the base creature’s special attacks..."
There's no way to retain any of the base creature's special attacks.

"Special Qualities: An umbral creature gains the four special qualities described below."
Note that this does not state that it loses any of its special qualities, though certain special qualities (regeneration) no longer function if it does not have a Con score.

Something like a Will-O’-Wisp (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/willOWisp.htm) would keep its magic immunity, natural invisibility, and Deflection bonus to AC, plus it has an abnormally high Dex score.

A Mind Flayer would keep its SR and Telepathy, but it would lose its mind blast, psionic abilities, and tentacle attacks. In any case you should always give an umbral creature Flyby Attack so it can fly out of the wall/floor/ceiling, hit once, and then fly back into a solid obstacle.
