Hello!

I'm looking to do a druid that toggles between a melee/artillary build depending on the group I get in Pathfinder organized play. Working on the spell list and so far I have(see below). I'm trying to figure out if Animal Growth stacks with wildshape. Wildshape is a supernatural abilty - not magical - but it allows me to change into an anmial and then functions as per beast shape. I'm also unclear if the stacking bounus would apply or not(the entire reason why I'd want to cast animal growth on myself wildshaped). Can you help?

Thank you in advance,

Animal Growth

School transmutation; Level druid 5, ranger 4, sorcerer/wizard 5
Casting
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Effect
Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets one animal (Gargantuan or smaller)
Duration 1 min./level
Saving Throw Fortitude negates; Spell Resistance yes
Description
The target animal grows to twice its normal size and eight times its normal weight. This alteration changes the animal's size category to the next largest, grants it a +8 size bonus to Strength and a +4 size bonus to Constitution (and thus an extra 2 hit points per HD), and imposes a -2 size penalty to Dexterity. The creature's existing natural armor bonus increases by 2. The size change also affects the animal's modifier to AC, attack rolls, and its base damage. The animal's space and reach change as appropriate to the new size, but its speed does not change. If insufficient room is available for the desired growth, the creature attains the maximum possible size and may make a Strength check (using its increased Strength) to burst any enclosures in the process. If it fails, it is constrained without harm by the materials enclosing it--the spell cannot be used to crush a creature by increasing its size.

All equipment worn or carried by the animal is similarly enlarged by the spell, though this change has no effect on the magical properties of any such equipment.

Any enlarged item that leaves the enlarged creature's possession instantly returns to its normal size.

The spell gives no means of command over an enlarged animal.

Multiple magical effects that increase size do not stack.

At 4th level, a druid gains the ability to turn herself into any small or Medium animal and back again once per day. Her options for new forms include all creatures with the animal type. This ability functions like the beast shape I spell, except as noted here. The effect lasts for 1 hour per druid level, or until she changes back. Changing form (to animal or back) is a standard action and doesn't provoke an attack of opportunity. The form chosen must be that of an animal the druid is familiar with.

A druid loses her ability to speak while in animal form because she is limited to the sounds that a normal, untrained animal can make, but she can communicate normally with other animals of the same general grouping as her new form. (The normal sound a wild parrot makes is a squawk, so changing to this form does not permit speech.)

A druid can use this ability an additional time per day at 6th level and every two levels thereafter, for a total of eight times at 18th level. At 20th level, a druid can use wild shape at will. As a druid gains in levels, this ability allows the druid to take on the form of larger and smaller animals, elementals, and plants. Each form expends one daily usage of this ability, regardless of the form taken.

At 6th level, a druid can use wild shape to change into a Large or Tiny animal or a Small elemental. When taking the form of an animal, a druid's wild shape now functions as beast shape II. When taking the form of an elemental, the druid's wild shape functions as elemental body I.

At 8th level, a druid can use wild shape to change into a Huge or Diminutive animal, a Medium elemental, or a Small or Medium plant creature. When taking the form of animals, a druid's wild shape now functions as beast shape III. When taking the form of an elemental, the druid's wild shape now functions as elemental body II. When taking the form of a plant creature, the druid's wild shape functions as plant shape I.

At 10th level, a druid can use wild shape to change into a Large elemental or a Large plant creature. When taking the form of an elemental, the druid's wild shape now functions as elemental body III. When taking the form of a plant, the druid's wild shape now functions as plant shape II.

At 12th level, a druid can use wild shape to change into a Huge elemental or a Huge plant creature. When taking the form of an elemental, the druid's wild shape now functions as elemental body IV. When taking the form of a plant, the druid's wild shape now functions as plant shape III.

Supernatural Abilities (Su)

These can't be disrupted in combat and generally don't provoke attacks of opportunity. They aren't subject to spell resistance, counterspells, or dispel magic, and don't function in antimagic areas.

The only thing I can see a problem with this combo is that it's really unclear if you actually get the animal type by wildshape, which would make you an invalid target of the spell if you don't or you just count as a polymorphed humaniod.

Super natural (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/glossary#TOC-Supernatural-Abilities-Su-) abilities ARE magical.

Supernatural abilities are magical attacks, defenses, and qualities. These abilities can be always active or they can require a specific action to utilize. The supernatural ability's description includes information on how it is used and its effects.

Then there is the rule that allows only one polymorph effect in place (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic#TOC-Transmutation-Polymorph). Both wildshape and animal growth are polymorph effects.

You can only be affected by one polymorph spell at a time. If a new polymorph spell is cast on you (or you activate a polymorph effect, such as wild shape), you can decide whether or not to allow it to affect you, taking the place of the old spell. In addition, other spells that change your size have no effect on you while you are under the effects of a polymorph spell.

Besides that, in general size bonuses do stack because they are based on size category.

Edit

The only thing I can see a problem with this combo is that it's really unclear if you actually get the animal type by wildshape, which would make you an invalid target of the spell if you don't or you just count as a polymorphed humaniod.

Also true, you keep being humanoid.

Seriously, this is a hard no from all angles. :smalltongue:

Thank you very much, that makes a lot of sense. Now I will search for a new level 5 druid 'melee/combat' spell. :)

The war domain (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/cleric/domains/paizo---domains/war-domain) gives you access to Divine Power as a 4th level spell, which stacks with Wild Shape. Normally, druids do not get access to the war domain, but the saurian shaman (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/archetypes/paizo---druid-archetypes/saurian-shaman) archetype gives you access to this domain, as well as some other great things. Sure, this does replace your animal companion, but you get some great spells and abilities (especially if you take the tactics subdomain), and you can take animal ally (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/animal-ally) + boon animal companion to get an AC anyway.

Both wildshape and animal growth are polymorph effects.

Animal Growth is not a polymorph effect. But, Wildshape doesn't change creature type and you can't be size changed while polymorphed anyway: "In addition, other spells that change your size have no effect on you while you are under the effects of a polymorph spell. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic#TOC-Transmutation-Polymorph)"
