I seem to remember an ability (probably a feat or class feature) that allowed you to set aside a certain amount of your gold as random stuff you've stuck in your haversack last time you stopped for supplies, but lets you choose what you bought as the situation demands it.

Anyone recognize it?

As I don't have that book, I kind of doubt it. I could have sworn it was a WotC book. It may have been homebrew, but I'm hoping not.

PF or 3.5

in PF there's the Deep Pockets ability from the Pathfinder Chronicler

in 3.5 there's a few similar effects (sandshaper, shaper of form, shadowsmith, menacing brute...)

Perhaps the tools of the trade feature of the Shade hunter prestige in champions of ruin?

Dragon #354 also has a Pack Rat feat, attached to Wedded to History.

One of these is probably it. I really wish they weren't because on review they're really underwhelming. (10 GP/level? Are you kidding me?)

Thanks, though.

That's good if it lets you get scrolls. It's like being Schrodinger's Wizard without all the work. Even with just nonmagical garbage, you can still solve many situations by blowing a few gold.
