Each of you received a summons from Gerald Heral, Third Paragon, and while your motivations are your own, you decide to heed the summons. You arrive at the Tower of the Paragons at the appointed time, and a guard approaches you.

"You are expected, but the Paragons have had to handle an unforeseen situation. If it will not discomfort you too much to wait, I have been instructed to show you to a comfortable place."

He leads you to a lavishly furnished room on the third floor and bids you make yourself comfortable.

"As you can see," he points to the tables on one side of the room, "there is food and drink in case you have want of it. If you should need anything else, just ask one of the guards in the hall. The Paragons will send another when they are ready for you."

He exits, but within moments, others are brought to the same room and given the same speech. Five of you in total sit in the waiting chamber...

Octavia

Octavia walks in, idly running her fingers through her mossy hair, trying fruitlessly to detangle it. Her pet viper Vidoro slithered next to her, seven feet of cold black scales winding silently on the plush carpet. She looks around at the other attendees before feeding Vidoro a few bits of meat from the table.

"I'm Octavia, nice to meet you all."

Corinthius nods in thanks to the guard. He had been the first to arrive; an order from the head of his own order warranted nothing less than absolute punctuality, after all. His head is bare of his helmet, and his face remains human; were he in his battle mode, his spells would make him look more bestial. His hair is a deep auburn, a full beard adorning his chin and cheeks. His amber eyes burn with an otherworldly fire, and indeed his head almost seems surrounded by a halo of light. He wears fine blue robes with silver trim, and underneath one can see the fine chainmail he wears. A battle-priest of Heironeous, it is obvious for all to see; the holy symbol on his chest merely dispels any doubt.

To his fellow room mates, he gives a personable bow of the head in greeting. "I am Corinthius. I pray you all weathered yesterday's assault without lasting injury. T'was a cowardly, dastardly action."

He sits down on a chair and picks out a few slices of bread. He butters them and digs in, moving through the food at a steady pace. No need to let such scrumptious food go to waste.

Enthos entered the room, his armor making an audible clanking sound as he walked - despite being mithral, full plate was still full plate. What appear to be blueish constructs of energy swirl around his body, solidified around his head and arms into a helmet and bracers. He immediately walked to the refreshments and piled on a wide variety of food, tearing into it with gusto. Once he slowed down his eating he looked up at the gathered group.

"Enthos Onard, pleasure to meet you. Any idea what the Paragons want from us? Yesterday was pretty rough, to say the least."

Corinthius looks at the fascinating blue constructs on Enthos' body; he's seen maybe one other person to use energy like that, but he remembers vaguely reading a tome on such energy.

Indeed, Corinthius replies before taking a bite of a sandwich he'd made. It took the whole of my brothers and sisters who were present at the time to repel the undead that assaulted our temple. As for why we are here, I feel it must be related to the incident yesterday. Surely, what else could it be?

Though he is able to conceal it, he feels a bit of anxiety at the thought of meeting the head of his own order. For all the great works Corinthius has done, even becoming a paragon of his faith, he pales in comparison to a true Paragon such as Gerald.

Oberon walked into the room, his aristocratic coattails trailing behind him. He conducted himself with regality, making sure to look as dignified as possible. He shifted his eyes between the assorted guests, fingering his hidden dagger. If he moved quick enough, he could possibly take out the one in blue before the paragons arrive, command the priest to take out the guards and the plant woman while he could get awa-. No, he was not that person anymore. He gave a slight chuckle and sighed, before striding over to the drink table and withdrawing a bottle of wine and pouring it into a fine crystal glass.

He did note the others; another aasimar, a meldshaper, and a woodling, assuming his knowledge of the forests was correct. Interesting, and definitely abnormal group. What would be next, a sainted dwarf? He gave another chuckle and stood there, sipping his wine quietly and remaining apathetic to the conversations around him, though he still listened in.

Tordek & Merril

In the distance, a pair of voices can be heard raised in an argument. The particulars are difficult to make out, but as they come closer, one voice can be heard saying, "Dishonest sneak-thief!" while the other responds with, "Boorish grubby-bearded dwarf!"

Right outside the door, you can hear a sharp intake of breath at that last insult before the doors open and the guard dumps his two charges into the room, quickly shutting it behind them. The taller of the two is a dwarf clad in mithiral full-plate adorned in glowing runes and symbols, at his side sits a magnificent Skymetal Dwarven Waraxe that glows with magical energy even to the untrained or unaided sight. Next to him, there is a halfling woman who eyes each of you in turn before returning her gaze to the dwarf, she wears simple leathers and does not appear to carry a weapon. They glare at one another for a moment more before addressing the others in the room with them.

"Greetings." says the dwarf with a nod to the others, "I am Tordek Skyaxe of the famed and honored clan Skyaxe. Sainted by the blessings of Moradin, and crusader against the forces of evil. This-" He says patting the weapon at his side, "is the namesake of my clan, the axe forged in ages past by my clans founder, made of metal that descended from the fires of Moradin's forge itself during the funeral of a beloved Dwarven King, Moradin's Tear!"

A new voice belonging to seemingly no one responds to the dwarf's history lesson, "I swear you embellish my origins more with each telling Tordek. Anyway, any ally of the dwarves and of the forces of good need not fear my edge, though foes of such ally should beware my wrath." as the voice speaks you realize that the glow around the axe is pulsating in time with the voice. Twas the axe that spoke.

Sniggering slightly at the dwarfs chastisement by his own weapon, the halfling introduces herself, "Well, now that the blowhard is done, I suppose you are all curious who I am? Well, unlike a certain someone I am more careful who I introduce myself to. You may address me as Mil, or Milly if you wish to draw my ire, gain my trust and I might just tell you my real name."

With that, and a grumble from Tordek, they make their way to the table and begin to eat the food provided.

Moments after the dwarf arrives, the guard who escorted you into the waiting room returns. "The Paragons are ready for you. If you would please follow me." He leads you down the hall to a chamber with a circular device on the floor, surrounded by runes. "Please stand inside the circle and you will be transported to council chamber."

The device glows and hums briefly before you all find yourselves instantly transported into a large room. The walls all seem to be glass, and you can immediately identify scenes of the city below - the harbor to the east, the great fields to the west, and the sprawling, now tiny building of the Lighthaven all around. You must be very near the top of the Tower of the Paragons.

Immediately in front of you is a long table, strew with all sort of papers (maps are featured in great number, though their are also many written documents), and twelve chairs behind it. Four are occupied by figures who, even if you haven't seen a recent painting of, are well know by description. Gerald Heral, Third Paragon, sits resplendent in his flawless silver and blue armor, leaning over a map. The Dwarven woman Torvena d’Dannith, Fifth Paragon, wears a pair of mechanical spectacles, reading through documents. The red haired bard Vkothe scribles furiously, as if waging war on a piece of parchment (by the speed with which he writes, you'd say he's winning). Stern faced Sted Nark sits toward the end of the table, seemingly doing nothing but deeply pondering something.

Two other figures are present who's images are unknown to you. A dark haired woman in an extravagant red and black dress who is standing at the end of the table, looking extremely bored, and another woman lying on a sofa behind the others, deep asleep. Upon your arrival, Gerald Heral rises and walks around the table to stand before you.

http://i.imgur.com/1mrpdcG.jpg

"Right then. I see you've all received my invitation. I'm sure you want to know why you're here, and I assure you we'll approach that topic soon enough, but first some administrative details. First, I must request that each of you keep the things you learn here in confidence. From reading your profiles I don't expect this to be a problem. What we have in mind for you will require learning very sensitive information. It is not my way to make threats, but it is my way to tell the truth, so I will tell you this...should you try to pass sensitive knowledge about the Paragons, it will not go well for you." He honestly doesn't sound menacing when he says this, it really does seem as if he's simply stating a simple fact.

The Paladin pauses long enough to scan the group. If there are no objections he continues. "Enough of that. You're here because the city has come under attack, the Paragons are in need of heroes, and you all displayed great ability during the attack. We believe that with you working as a team, you could play a key role in fighting back the invaders. Of course you have many questions, so we have prepared a brief for each of you. Take a moment to read through it, and then I'll answer any remaining questions."

With that, he waves a hand to Torvena, who rounds the table carrying a stack of folders. She hands each of you one of the folders, which contains surprisingly few pages given the "world is ending" and this document is supposed to sum up the crisis. It only takes a matter of moments to go through the documents, from which you gather the following key points.

The Paragons do indeed have a direct connection to the good gods, which (among other things) protects them from death.
The portals opening throughout the city were a distraction from the main attack, which was actually inside the Tower of the Paragons. The enemy did something (the documents seem purposely unclear at this point) that severed much of the Paragons' connection. They are not protected as they have been in the past.
The fact that the Paragons are vulnerable is why they are hiring you to do their work. They simply have too much knowledge critical to the running of the empire to risk facing an unknown foe.
The sleeping woman on the couch is actually Second Paragon Linora. She is in a permanent trance, her consciousness flying all about the gaps between space-time, collecting knowledge. (As each of you reads the section explaining her role, a voice, presumably hers, says "hello" inside your head)
Linora's amazing divination power has revealed much about the enemy since she started focusing on them. Perhaps most importantly, she believes she understands their general plan. Crippling the Paragons was only the first step. The enemy believes with the Paragons unable to react, they can slowly undo the city. This means that while there will probably not be another major invasion, there will certainly be more portals opening soon, targeted to cause maximum chaos and destruction.
Linora believes she has found a way to predict where the enemy will attack and she hopes she will even be able to learn something about the enemies before they arrive. Your job will to be fend off such attacks.
Knowing that simply fighting portal invasions will not be enough, the Paragons are working to discover the true nature of the enemy so that they may take more decisive action, but currently they do not have enough information to act. When they solve this problem, you will be the strike force they send against the enemy, should you still be alive at that time.

When it looks like you've finished perusing the documents, Gerald speaks again. "We ask a great thing of you, but not without good reason." He walks in front of the group, stopping before each of you.

"Enthos Onard, you have sought to serve since your youth. None would question your loyalty to Lighthaven. Prove such faith in you is justified."

"Tordek Skyaxe, anointed one, it is time for the Tear of Moradin to write a new legend."

"Octavia, you have healed enough wounds for a whole church, but your new companions will require even more of you before this trial is done."

"Oberon, your life was finally one of peace here in Lighthaven, one you deserved. Help us preserve that type of life for the thousands who were living it but two days ago."

Lastly he steps in front of Corinthius, but does not speak. Instead, he places his hand on the Aasimar's shoulder, looks into his eyes, and simply nods.

With that, the Third Paragon returns to his place behind the table before asking, "What are your questions?"

Oberon could not hold back the bitter laugh in his throat. They were wrong. He didn't deserve his life of peace. He had ended the lives of hundreds, toppled kingdoms, and had committed enough atrocities to be condemned to eternal torture. He didn't care in a single least of the lives of any of the citizens, and he wasn't a hero to be called on. If he did had a reason to go on their "quest", it would be so he could never be bothered again. But, instead he looked at it pragmatically, and found an opportunity.

"So what," Oberon calmly stated, "is our reward?"

Vkothe stops his scribbling and rises. "If I may Gerald, I'm not sure you speak this ones language." He steps out in front of the group and continues without waiting for a response, though he leans into the group conspiratorily before continuing. "You'll have to forgive old Gerald, he's always so high minded about these things."

"Of course there will be plenty of rewards! Though we would request any treasure you may discover fighting our enemies be turned over for cateloging in case it may contain clues. We will of course compensate you accordingly."

Turning his attention to the half-fey, he pulls a small book out of his pocket and tosses it to the well dressed man. "Of course if all that isn't enough, think for a moment about the advantages of being in the extremely good graces of the Paragons." Inspecting the cover, Oberon reads First Principles of Man, an impossibility given the last copy was destroyed over 800 years ago...

Enthos cracked a small smile, "Of course. It would be my honor." He stood slightly straighter and prouder after replying. He almost itched with the energy to go out and fight.

In the room of the Paragons, Corinthius stands straighter. Arms straight at his side, he stands at attention as Gerald first addresses them. The information in the brief is taken in with fascination. And as the Paragon moves to each member of the group, getting closer to the priest, Corinthius stands even straighter as his anxiety rises.

The Battlemaster's more personal show to him sends a thrill of excitement through him. An unspoken agreement, almost, between the two men of faith. Fists clenched at his sides, Corinthius almost wants to go out and slay their enemies right here and now.

But now is not the time; information is what is needed, in order to wage war well. To Oberon's question, Corinthius' first instinct is to admonish the other man; that the Paragons have requested their aid, and that innocent men and women are in danger, is all the reason one should need to join this crusade. Still, the priest knows that not all men share his ideals; and Lord Vkothe's words work much better in convincing Oberon.

Opening his mouth, Corinthius asks, Does Milady Linora have any idea where or when the next portal will appear? He asks this again in his mind, thinking it courteous to ask Linora herself because she is the one he is asking in the end.

The voice in your mind responds. You get the feeling that while it isn't audible, everyone in the room is hearing the same thing. "Yes, that is perhaps the most pressing question. I have reason to believe their attack will begin again tomorrow."

(Um, imagine her a little shorter and stockier...as a dwarf ought be)

Torven takes up where the sleeping witch leaves off. "We have prepared rooms for you here, as it will be necessary to use the tower's travel magic should a hasty assault need turned back. When this audience is done, you may return to your homes to gather anything you may need, though please check your quarters here first as you will find they contain much of what you need. Oh and of course don't take too long...while Linora has not foreseen an attack tonight, we can never be too careful. Of course I'm getting ahead of myself though...there is still time for questions if you have them."

Oberon studied the book further. Interesting. Had the Paragons been hiding books, or had they recovered them earlier?

"Well, then this could be an interesting venture." He pocketed the book and listened to the voice in his head.

"So, if an attack is tomorrow, why haven't you prepared for it? I should assume the Paragons have the foresight to set up the proper fortifications."

He stood confidently, with his hands held behind him and his chin upturned.

The dwarf woman pushes a few pieces of paper out of her way before snatching one up and scanning it. "It says in your dossier 'Mr Oberon is well above average intelligence,' hmm...but I suppose we did draw these up rather quickly. Perhaps it was an error..." Before she can continue the rebuke, Vkothe speaks up again.

"What Torvena means to say is that we are indeed taking steps. For instance, putting together your little group. And you may have noticed the reading material on the table...I can assure all these maps and other documents aren't simply an attempt to alphabetize our shelves. Of course Linora is excellent at what she does, but can only tell us so much. No, we have put considerable thought into a plan, but until Sted..."

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh275/Ravingdork/PaladinofPelor.jpg

At the mention of his name, the stern faced man at the end of the table rises. He shakes his head once as if having come to an unsavory conclusion, then speaks, though it takes a moment to realize he is only addressing the other Paragons in the room, seemingly oblivious to your small group. "I have reach a conclusion. The plan will not breach the charter, we may go ahead with it. Doesn't mean it's good though." Several looks are passed about the chamber. Clearly there was discussion on this point before you arrived, but without context, it's impossible to know what the looks mean.

Torvena thinks about this for a moment, then continues, "Very well then, the plan has been approved and we can share it with our new colleagues." She sits down before giving you the details. "I take it from the comment a moment ago, some of you may still be unclear about the enemies' intentions. Having succeeded at the first step of their plan, they do not now intend to wage some sort of all out war against the city. Perhaps they do not have the sheer numbers...after all, the previous attacks throughout the city, though they may have been only diversions, were mostly turned back. No, instead they mean to undermine the government, instill fear in the population, and perhaps then strike, when the city has been sufficiently weakened."

"Unfortunately I have somewhat played into their hand. You see, the annual Southady's Auction will be taking place tomorrow. You need not understand the intricacies of how this event serves as an economic bellwether, or how important a social event it is. Trust me though, it is important. Which is why, shortly after the attack, I spoke with many of the wealthy families in the city, convincing them that the Paragons have the situation in hand, there is nothing to fear, and they should continue on with the event. The city needs to believe we have a solution, because that's what they're used to. Any alternative will lead to panic."

"So yes, I convinced them to continue the auction as planned. To ease their minds, I promised a squad of the best city guards would be stationed at the event. Little did I know the enemy would make the gathering its next target. They plan to strike the auction. We considered cancelling the event after all, but the effect on morale would be simply disastrous. If all of the most influential people in the city received personal assurances from the Paragons that the event would be safe, only to be told less than a day later that it was too high a risk, well questions would be asked about our ability to protect the city."

"Instead, we have chosen to send all of you there, to fight off the invaders. If all goes well, the people will see that agents of the Paragons are indeed fully capable of protecting them and no one will get hurt. Yes of course, there are risks involved, which is why our faithful lawgiver was analyzing the plan to be sure it did not conflict with our commitments. Of course you'll be there to challenge the invaders, but we will be putting special precautions in place to ensure the safety of those present, to the greatest degree possible. Enivera?"

http://ksiazkowo.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/1372151405.jpg

The woman at the end of the table, thus far maintaining her look of boredom, responds to the call, though none of you recognize the name. She dons a more serious face and flames leap from her hands before she proclaims, "Your council is doomed Torvena! I will walk on your bones till they are dust and bathe in your blood! I will watch Lighthaven burn!"

The outburst shocks all of you, but anyone watching Gerald notices him rolling his eyes in a particularly uncharacteristic manner for a man of such dignity. Enivera seems to notice this as well and visibly deflates, her voice dropping its menace, "Bah...there was a time when I struck fear into anyone who heard my rebuke. Alas, the curse of age...or something. Anyway, you'll want this." She holds out a few small black stones, giving them to the first person who offers a palm. "Drop it on the floor when the invasion starts and the demons...you did tell them it's demons coming, right Torvena?...will mistake the normal clients for evil underlings." She attempts a fake blush and puts one hand to her face, "I'm something of an expert with demons, having been friends with them for so long."

If you can detect evil, Enivera does indeed have a strong evil aura.

Gerald seems to have tired of the woman and speaks up again, "Enough Enivera. I think most of the details should be clear now. We need the five of you to attend the auction. Two of you will be wearing guard uniforms to better blend in, the others will be bidders, socializers, whatever. While we don't have a precise time, Linora will be able to warn you before the attack happens. At that point, the guards will move the civilians away from the impending portals, you'll drop Eniveras magical stones to further ensure the safety of the civilians, and then you'll fight back the forces of hell. Oh and if a leader of some sort shows himself, try to subdue him if you can. Sted was able to question the drow Tordek captured, but his knowledge, while useful, was limited."

Tordeck & Merril

Having remained silent and focused on trying to absorb as much information as possible, Tordek visibly winces at the sight of this Enivera character. He whispers to Merril, "Oi, you catch sight of that one? What is the likes of her doing in the chambers of the Paragons? Can we even trust that her stones won't kill everyone?"

At this Merril blushes, grabs Tordek's ear and yanks him down so she can quietly shout into his ear, "You dumb oaf! Why not say that a little louder so the guards downstairs can hear! If the Paragons trust her then we should too! Besides she might be hiding her alignment with magic!"

Tordek looks thoughtful for a moment then nods. That must be it, no way would the Paragons associate with her ilk... he thinks to himself. "Hey Merril, any idea what magic those stones hold?" he again whispers to his petite companion.

Sighing, Merril nods and responds, "Very well then." With a thought, Merril activates one of her special abilities. Now she can see the magical auras active in the room.

Merril uses her Detect Magic SLA and is focusing on the stones for 3 rounds to get a spellcraft check.

Were he less disciplined, Corinthius may have snickered at Torvena's rebuke. Of course the Paragons would have begun preparations; they would not be where they are today without cunning and canniness, even if they have (had) the blessing of the gods to fall back on.

The holy man listens with attentiveness as each Paragon speaks. He makes note that Sted speaks of a "charter", that they either cannot or are not willing to break. Part of him wants to inquire about it, but he holds himself back. There are more important things to ask about now.

I will dress as a guard. With my demeanor and appearance, I doubt I could masquerade as an auctioneer or customer, he says formally, clinically. He pockets the black stone, his face not showing any reaction to the aura of evil he can see radiating off of Enivera. He trusts that Gerald would not work with any truly evil person, but part of him wonders...was there more to that evil cleric's words than the ravings of a madman?

Battlemaster, through my own spells my weapon is made more effective against demons and their ilk. Would you possibly have items or crystals for the weapons of those of our group that do not have such enchantments? His mind is racing with plans: I'll prepare a Magic Circle against Evil, maybe two, and then...

"I will also attend as a guard. I would rather not be caught out of my armor in such a situation." This Enivera woman was odd, definitely. Enthos wasn't entirely sure what to make of her - he detected a strong evil aura about her, but she was most definitely working with the Paragons against the invaders. They would just have to wait and see what happened.

Oberon knew how social the auction was. He had attended from time to time, and had in this way recovered his old dagger from being bought by some pompous rich fool, unknowing of its properties. He had noted the rebuke to his fishing; even, it seems, Paragons had their flaws, pettiness among them. Perhaps there was an opportunity for exploitation here, hm, but that was not in his best interests.

"I have attended the auction from time to time, and I can blend in with the crowd as a socializer easily enough." He was, of course, once a professional assassin. Not standing out was one of his prided specialties.

Octavia

Octavia ponders the plan for a moment while letting Vidoro slither across her arms and shoulders, idly caressing his smooth scales.

Finally she speaks, forgoing the lofty mind-talk in favor of the base Common speech, making eye contact with each person in the room as she talks.

"I mislike this plan. How can we be certain of the timing of the attacks? Just how much warning will we have?"

"Are any of these civilians capable of defending themselves if things go awry? Or even fleeing adequately? Or will they be so many chickens caught in our misguided attempt at fox-hunting in the hen-house?"

"Put it this way... if I sent 5 mongooses in to guard a chicken coop, and then told Vidoro that a trap awaited him... He'd go in anyway, and like his chances of coming out well-fed." At that, Vidoro flicks his tongue against her cheek in what can only be some kind of acknowledgement.

She turns towards Gerald and stares at him pointedly. "Are you so sure we are adequate mongooses for this little game? You talk of causing a panic, yet risk the lives of your citizens. Panic is the appropriate response when something threatens a creature's life. Life is what matters.. Life is ALL that matters. Not pride, nor panic, nor Paragon reputations. Life."

Mindsight gives the ability to know the type and Intelligence score of every sentient creature in range. I'm curious where the stats of the Paragons are...

Oberon turned his head towards Octavia, an amuse smile pulling at his lips.

"Don't worry. They "prepared" for this. These stones will definitely hit the entire crowd, of which there are hundreds, despite 2 people are guards and the three others are scattered around the entire auction, and we will definitely be able to throw these exactly on command. Honestly, a better choice would be to just mind control us right now and have us do it flawlessly with no room for error."

Gerald speaks again, addressing each of those with questions. Looking at Corinthius, "I'm afraid nearly all such equipment that can be spared has been issued to the city guard and the military. It was done so immediately following the initial attack, before we knew anything about the enemies' future plans. While we aren't currently expecting an all out attack, I think such supplies are best left with the guards. If the enemies change tactics and attack, there wouldn't be time to collect and reissue them. And you all were selected in part because it seems you have your own means and experience. Still, we can at least place some enchantments on your weapons before sending you to the Auction House. Torvena will see to it."

Turning to Octavia, "Your reaction is much the same as mine. I like not the idea of placing civilians in the way of harm simply to maintain some image of the Paragons. My compatriots have made a compelling case to me however. It is not in my nature to weight the value of lives, but I cannot deny that allowing the citizens to lose faith in the Paragons may cost us much more than this plan ever could. You may not realize just how accustom the people of Lighthaven have become to having their needs met by our protecting hand. Perhaps this was a failure on our part." He becomes a bit pensive before continuing, "Still, the point is that if they loose faith, absolute chaos in the streets is far closer than you may realize. And such disorder will only further our enemies plans."

"Despite all this, as I said before, I am not in the business of weighing lives against one another. If I did not believe the operation could be carried out without loss, I would not support it." Addressing some of the healer's other concerns, he continues, "The invitation list this year has been altered a fair bit. There will be only perhaps a few dozen individuals present, all of which were selected based on the fact that they have at least some way of dealing with dangerous situations. Not through combat mind you, but one does not become a wealthy elite in Lighthaven without acquiring a few magical trinkets to keep them alive. Further, they all have been briefed by the city guard that if anything should happen, they are to take orders from the guards in the room, unless they wish to teleport away, which is their prerogative. On top of all that, they will not be seen as threats thanks to Enivera's magic, which I assure you will blanket all of the civilians inside Southady's. She's only given you multiples as sort of a back up."

"You will also be warned with plenty of time. Linora will be able to communicated with you throughout your time working for us, which should give you an upper hand in coordination. And she will know at least a minute before any portals open, hopefully even longer." A look of sadness comes over his face, "If it were not forbidden, I assure you I would be there myself. I did not like this plan, and I will never advocate placing our citizens in harms way, but this CAN be done."

Lastly he looks to Oberon, "I don't know what game you're playing at, but it is not amusing. You assume you know much, whether through arrogance or something else, I care not. If you are so certain this task is beyond you, return to your study and engross yourself in a book. If you wish to help though, limit your words to ones that contribute to solving the problem at hand."

Torvena speaks again when Gerald has finished. "You may have noticed that we were not 100% settled on this plan ourselves. Indeed, I raised many of the same concerns. It need not be exactly as we've said though...simply the objectives must be met. Namely the auction must happen, the citizens must be protected, and the invading demons must be turned back. Minimal damage to anything in the auction house should also be considered, though it is not as important as the others."

She pauses long enough to pass you each another stack of papers. "Here are the blueprints of the Auction House. The Auction will start tomorrow evening. If you wish to formulate a better plan, by all means do so. I will be the first to admit that our view of planning things is a bit skewed...call it a product of normally being able to call on divine intervention whenever we need it. You all have achieved your current status without such aid, or at least only a more limited version. Perhaps your perspective will lead to options we did not see. At this point all we require is assurance that you are willing to do the job. If your reservations are too great, we will not fault you, but we will need to find others to fill your place. Besides that, you may conduct your planning here or in a private chamber we have prepared for you. Please notify someone if you need to leave the tower, and if you must, try not to be gone too long."

After focusing for a few moments, Merril can tell the stones have three magical auras that all falls into the "strong" category. Her spellcraft however, does not reveal the school of magic reveals one to be strong divination, one to be strong transmutation, and one to be strong enchantment (technically this takes three rolls, but no worries). Since she's focusing on detecting magic, she can notice how much of a "light show" the room is, especially around the Paragons. Each individual has at least three "overwhelming" auras (this is assuming she looks at anything but the stones), and many lower auras.

Tordek & Merril

Slightly disheartened that they will be playing babysitters to a bought of pampered nobles rather than taking the fight to the enemy, Tordek is nevertheless pleased to hear that they will be fighting spawn from the abyss. When he hears the walking plant complaining about life this, life that he complains right back, "Oi you! Walking shrub! If you are so concerned with people dying why don't you attend and actually try to save them instead of complaining? Just cancelling the thing would only serve to make the curs attack somewhere else, possibly somewhere with a lot more people that won't be as heavily guarded as this place."

After hearing the report from Merril about the three schools involved with the stones (and about the crazy powerful magic in the room which is making her eyes water), Tordek furrows his brow. If the stones are supposed to just mask the guests I can understand the Enchantment school being used... but Transmutation and Divination? This seems fishy... "Oi, Enivera! Those stones are all supposed to do the same thing right, fool the demons? Why do they each have a different magical school in their aura then?" As Tordek asks, he loosens Moradin's Tear in it's sheathe, and the weapons voice can be heard, "I hate deceivers..."

Octavia

Octavia snorts derisively at Tordek's comment, her facing twisting into a disapproving sneer.

"Hmmpph. You're a foot shorter than me and you have THAT growing off you" - she wiggles her fingers under her chin mimicking the dwarf's beard - " and you call ME a shrub?"

"I don't. Think. You've. Looked. In. The. MIRROR!" She snaps her fingers and bobs her head from side to side to punctuate each syllable.

"And besides, Mr. Short-Deck, I never said I wasn't going to attend. Of course we'll meet this threat head-on. What I said was there was no reason for the citizenry to be there."

Enthos sighed, "Please. We've been together for less than an hour and we've already started fighting with each other. Save it for the enemy. It'll make you fight better." These kinds of petty arguments were exactly the kind of thing that the forces of Evil would want - anything to make the Paragons and their people weaker.

What a lovely, functional group they're turning out to be. A snickering, passive-agressive rabblerouser; one who's borderline belligerent; and another who's retaliatory. Not the most auspicious beginning.

Sir Enthos is right; please, calm yourselves, both of you. The holy man steps between the dwarf and plant-woman, holding his hands out calmingly. We all want the same thing: the protection of those who need it. Milady Octavia, if there were no one there tomorrow, then the enemy would undoubtedly realize something were amiss and choose another avenue of assault. This is far from ideal; no one here is denying that. But we must work with what we have.

And Sir Tordek, I would ask that you refrain from shouting at those with whom you will be fighting beside soon. Battles such as these require teamwork and morale; neither of which are gained through shouting matches.

He refrains from mentioning that he's seen green novices with more discipline than what he's seen so far and turns to the Paragons. Milady Enivera, I'm curious: will your enchantments cause the citizens to register as evil to anyone or anything else besides the demons? Many of the spells we may use are detrimental to those who are black of heart, and it would be unfortunate if they affected the innocent because of your enchantment.

He waits patiently for the answers to both his and Tordek's questions. The self-professed demon-consorter still does not sit well with him.

Oberon studied the others. Discord between the group already, and they didn't even do anything yet. What a wonderful force against evil, surely going to prevail. He didn't even start it himself this time. But there were more pressing matters afoot.

"As well as what the holy-man said, if these are demons, how are we to know if they won't harm the citizens merely from carelessness, say a stray fireball or lightning bolt? Many demons also prefer to wait for their minions to weaken the enemy first, and if they see their "underlings" not attacking, they may punish them, servant or not. How will the demons perceive these new minions? Will they think they are new expendables, or veterans that they would prefer not to have killed?"

Enivera looks to Gerald as if asking permission and the Paladin waves his hand in acquiescence. She smiles wickedly, taking the chance to explain. "To answer your questions, the stones contain very complex magic of my own crafting. The divination is necessary because the stones will identify every individual in the room, continuously updating who will be the targets of the other two effects. The Illusion will target the citizens present, blanketing them with the appearance I spoke of earlier. The enchantment will target the evil individuals in the room, making it so the aforementioned illusion will only apply to them, while simultaneously adding a subconscious, but very powerful, urge to ignore the citizens.

Turning to Oberon she adds, "No, it won't work quite that way. The demons, well any evil creature really, will sense the citizens as a sort of nebulous evil figure, but they will actually find it impossible to focus on them. Sort of like if they had some underlings marching along beside them, who they could see out of the corner of their eye, but who they found it impossible to focus on. Colateral damage though...I wish you hadn't brought that up...I was hoping some of them would get fried! And no, it will not have any other affect on the citizens, though that is a very clever idea that I simply have to try some time - making a good person seem so evil that they burn in holy fire? That would be genius!"

(Assuming she gets even more "wtf" looks from the group, she smiles and continues)

"I've seen your looks, heard your comments, and now your questions, so let me offer an explanation. I am Enivera, Twelfth Paragon, Blood Queen, Bone Caster, and Mother of Darkness. Though I had to make those titles up myself, since there isn't really one around to venerate me properly. Your senses do not deceive you though, I am indeed evil. I've done oh so many terrible things in my life," her tone is playful, you can tell she's enjoying this, "and I regret none of them. For instance, those stones aren't even stones at all, they're carved bones of small children that I killed (sense motive DC 35 tells you she's lying, just about the bones)! What you should ask yourself, is can you really trust these 'Paragons' (she actually makes air quotes with her fingers), when they work willingly with someone so evil is me?"

Gerald cuts her off again, "We spoke about this Enivera, you had leave to tell your story and purpose, not to try and manipulate our guests against us." He turns and speaks to the group, "In fact much of what Enivera said is true, though the bit about children's' bones is nonsense. It's still difficult for her to speak without trying to deceive. It is, after all, her nature. Our resident historian can tell you the true version. And yes, this falls very firmly into the category of things you won't ever repeat after leaving here."

Vkothe takes his cue and begins, "Toward the end of the Godswar, when it was all but certain the forces of light would prevail, a council was convened. Many of the neutral gods, Boccob foremost among them, warned that if evil were absolutely eradicated, it would create a great imbalance. These concerns were not taken seriously until Boccob insisted that his arch rival, Tharizdun, not be destroyed, as he, or some being like him, was integral to the balance of the cosmos. At that time a strike had already been planned to eradicate the chained god of eternal darkness once and for all, but hearing none other that Boccob, eternal enemy of Tharizdun, plea that the gods stay their hands, they finally took note. The ensuing debate was very boring - trust me, I had to take notes - and involved a lot of subjects that I don't understand to this day. Exothermic vs endothermic universes, something Boccob called the Second Law of Primordial Existentialism, evil essence vs. evil manifestations, etc. Ultimately they agreed on a major point - that evil energy would always exist, and that without receptacles toward which it could flow, something 'new' could be created from it. No one wanted to find out what that would be."

"The danger then was that many of the evil gods, which till that point were the common receptacles for such evil energy, had already been destroyed. If only a few of the remaining were allowed to survive the war, they would have had an inordinate amount of negative energy coming their way. Like a thousand rivers feeding one lake. No one wanted to find out how big that lake would become if his name were, say, Nerull. As it turns out, Boccob, smart fella by the way," Vkothe sort of raises his face to the sky as if to say 'just a joke, don't get mad' before continuing, "had already been researching the problem, which is how he came to the conclusion that Tharizdun must continue to exist. Turns out there's something special about him...you can pretty much send as much evil energy his way as you want and he just sort of...well...consumes it. Same for the infinite abyss, being infinite and all. Of course there are a lot more details, but I can see I'm already boring you."

Looking around he catches a glimpse of Enivera, prompting him to speak again, "Oh right, so you want to know what this has to do with her. Well once the evil gods figured out what was going on, they basically threatened to fight to the death if the good gods didn't give them something in return. Very strange negotiation that, what with them basically saying 'we'll commit suicide if you don't give us what we want.' Hence the Twelfth Paragon was created. A liaison between those Evil forces that remain, and this council. Well technically an equal to all of us here, though the good gods put so many restrictions in place that it didn't really end up being that way. Despite her nature, and the lies she'll tell you, Enivera hasn't been able to do a single evil act ever since the war ended. Which really annoys her." He chuckles audibly, "Just ask her about the time she had to save the those kittens...genius prank by Galo and Caldo!" He grows serious once more, "It's not an easy situation to accept though, so I suggest developing your own coping mechanism post haste. Gerald for instance has tried every day for a few hundred years to get her to repent. I've listened to her stories, since history itself is neither good nor evil, and she knows some fascinating things. Do whatever you have to, but just know it's a situation you can't change. If it helps at all, keep in mind the gods you worshiped are all on board."

Just when it seems he's finally done with his rant, he adds, "Oh, but never, I repeat, NEVER trust her without one of us present."

The story being done, Torvena approaches the group to talk with them about the paperwork detailing the Auction House. "Your friend brings up a good point about collateral damage. Even if the demons aren't targeting them, the citizens could be injured if they are in the wrong place. Hmm. I would recommend this." She points to the part of the blueprint marked as display rooms, to either side of the main auction room, "These displays are protected by several layers of magic, to include permanent walls of pure force. They can be removed with the proper command word though, and there is enough space in the two rooms to hold all of the attendees. When you receive the warning from Linora, you can have two of the auction personnel stationed by the windows whose job it is to drop them into the floor, remove the protective magic, and then reactivate it when all the citizens are inside."

That...is a lot of information to take in. He could not contain a slight grimace of the lips when Enivera spoke. He hopes that the restrictions on the evil woman have not weakened with the theft of the Paragons' power, though he does not speak that worry out loud. No need to give the woman more reasons to speak than necessary. And the idea that such a black-hearted woman is on the Paragons' council; that even Battlemaster Gerald has not been able to sway her from the side of evil; is more than a bit disconcerting. But they say that they have no choice, and so Corinthius will trust them. At least, until new evidence reveals itself.

That idea sounds excellent, Milady Torvena, he says with a bow of the head to the dwarven woman. I do not believe I have anymore questions for you all at the moment. With your leave, I believe the five of us should confer amongst ourselves as to the best way to handle this situation. He stands at attention, awaiting any final words from the head of his order.

Hearing Corinthius' statement, Gerald looks at him and grins almost imperceptibly, "Ready as one of the Valorous Hosts should be. Very well then, confer among yourselves as needed. The guards will also show you your quarters here and help you retrieve any items you may need from your homes. You'll also find a bag in each of your rooms with common equipment you may need. If you have any further need of us, speak to the guard outside the chamber you used to reach this room. If you need to leaver the tower, inform one of the guards where you are going and when you intend to be back. Oh, and return to these chambers tomorrow afternoon no later than third bell. The auction will begin at sixth bell, but we intend to send you there before it starts." With that, all the Paragons in the room go back to their activities.

The same circle on the floor behind you glows, and stepping into it transports you back to a lower part of the tower. A guard does indeed escort you to a hall with five rooms adjacent to one another, showing each of you to a room. They are modest rooms, but small subtleties tell you they were prepared for you specifically. Lots of books in Oberon's, an extra space for Merril and Vidoro in Tordek and Octavia's rooms, racks for armor in most of them.

The time is yours to do with as you wish. Recon the objective, meditate, move furniture from your house, plan more, whatever. By Sunday night, make a post detailing what your character does to prepare. Since we are sort of "on hold," try to take the opportunity give a little insight into your character through the actions they take, knowing they will be fighting demons the next day. Also, either in a OOC spoiler here, or just in the OOC thread, post where you plan to position your character on the map. The numbers/letters are wrong right now, so just count the squares and give the appropriate space (for instance, J4 would be standing on the front of the stage on one corner)

Octavia says to the group, "At the second bell, we will eat a special meal to bolster our spirits. Do not miss it."

Then she retires to her room with Vidoro. Binding vestiges is a private thing..

As I said before, at some point today she cast Energy Immunity (cold) with her extend rod. Tomorrow she'll cast Heroes Feast 4 hours before the auction. I'm not sure if the map grid, but she'll be right in the middle of the large mass of chairs in the center of the room.

Once the alarm goes off she'll cast Recitation and Mass Shield of Faith.

Tordek & Merril

At the mention of food, Tordek grins happily and chuckles, "Heheheh I am always up for some grub, the promise of righteous combat afterward also improves the taste!"

Merril merely nods and shoves Tordek towards their room. Meeting the Paragons was stressful for her and Tordeks behavior was no help whatsoever.

Preparations will mostly be sleeping. The spells prepared for tomorrow are on Tordek's sheet, all shared runes are held by Merril for her use if needed (though they can be given to anyone for use).

Corinthius gives a salute to the Battlemaster. Once they were out of the Paragons' room, he said to the others, I will be back soon; I have a few things I need to pick up from my room in the temple if I am to be living here for the time being.

He tells the guard, who accompanies him back to the Temple of Heironeous. The other priests and priestesses ask about the situation, but Corinthius waves them off. Tells them it is not his right to speak freely. He goes to his modest room and takes his small, portable shrine to Heironeous. There may have been one in his room in the tower already, but he prefers his own.

On the way out he runs into the local children whom he usually sees around, and tells them that he will not be able to see them much in the near future. The children are sad, and one even asks for a hug, which Corinthius gladly gives. He smiles and waves as he walks out of sight, and then his countenance becomes serious once more.

Back at the Tower of the Paragons, he sets up his miniature shrine and prays his nightly prayers. He asks Heironeous for strength, and wisdom to know the true path in these dark times.

Prepared spells are mostly ready on the sheet. Corinthius will ask to be placed on the other side of the C doors, in the room with the new-fangled contraption. G2, I believe.

Once Enthos said his farewells to the rest of the group he retired to his quarters, where he doffed his armor and rested for a while. While it had not been a strenuous day by any means it had been mentally taxing - an Evil Paragon, preparations for a Demon attack and so on. He needed to take some time to clear his head for the events to come.

The evening and the following morning pass uneventfully, each of you spending your time preparing in your own way. At second bell Octavia prepares a magical feast for everyone that gives you more confidence in the fight to come.

When you return to the Paragon's Council Chamber, only Gerald, Sted, Vkothe, and Torvena are present, but they all great you warmly, though seriously. Gerald is the first to speak, "I trust you've all made the preparations for the coming fight. It bothers me more than I can say that I won't be there by your side, but this is a challenge unlike any we've seen in centuries...perhaps it's best that new heroes face it. Socializing at Southady's will begin in half an hour. Rather than transport you there magically, we've organized carriages. One for those who will be attending as guests, one for those who will be filling the role of guards. Linora will of course be in contact with you throughout."

At that, the voice you're now familiar with speaks to you in your head, "I've spent most of the last day trying to uncover more of the enemy plan, but I'm afraid I've found little. Be careful though...while we know there will be demons present, it seems they will not be alone, though it is unclear who might accompany them."

Next, Torvena approaches you. "As I promised, I've worked on something that may help in the fight. We were researching rather late into the night though, so I'm afraid it's not my best work." She removes a disk from her belt and seems to adjust some sort of dial on it, then points it toward your group. A white beam travels toward whoever is closest to her, then immediately splits and touches each other member of the party. It happens quickly, and then the white beam is replaced by a green on, which is in turn replaced by yellow. It all happens in a matter of seconds. "Your weapons should be more suited to overcome any natural resistances the enemies may have. The effects will at least last until later this evening, after the auction is over."

At that, you all are escorted down to your carriages by a guard, and before you know it you arrive at Southady's Auction House. For those who haven't been before, it's is truly an amazing building given it's relatively small size. Every inch gives the impression that it was made out of the finest materials. The art on the walls of course compliments the opulent design and quality. Your group is some of the first to arrive, so you have plenty of time to look about, and also to socialize with other guests as they arrive, if you want to.

When the auction starts, it is indeed an interesting spectacle. For those who have seen normal marketplace auctions, or livestock auctions, this barely resembles the concept. The "auctioneer" does not display any of the normal rapid speech or coaxing nature you've seen before. He simply introduces an item, then briefly suggests a starting price. Most of the bidding is done by the audience members informing ushers who move back in forth through the aisles, rather than raising a number or the like. Bottom line, it's pretty boring, and the whole thing goes on for a few hours, at which point you're wondering if indeed there will be an attack after all, before you all simultaneously hear Linora's voice in your heads.

"They've begun to open the portal. It will be complete soon. It appears two portals are opening, one directly on the stage and another in the middle of the tables in the lounge. I will give the head guard the command to move the citizens, as well as the auction workers to open the galleries on either side - they've been told to expect such a command."

Sure enough, as soon as she's finished speaking, one of the guards at the front of the Auction Room raises his voice and everyone present stops to listen. "Citizens of Lighthaven, our most cherished Paragon's have just informed me that another attack on the city, in this location no less, is imminent." His voices takes on an even more confident and commanding tone, "Do not fear though. Preparations have been made throughout the city in case something like this might happen. Here in Southady's, the safest place is in those display rooms, which are protected by powerful magics. Please move there NOW. We regret the inconvenience, but you are about to see much more than the auction. You are about to witness the Paragons' Champions turning back the forces of evil!"

A few of the citizens actually disappear entirely, either teleporting away, or simply becoming invisible while (hopefully) moving toward the display rooms. There is some confusion at first, but the commanding presence and confidence of the guard has done its trick - the crowd moves fairly quickly from both the Auction Room and the lounge into the two displays, which were prepared by an auction house worker on either side. In less than a minute, the remaining citizens (about 30 in total) are all behind the barriers, which are lifted back into place. Some are confused, some are frightened, and some even seem a bit excited. They are all watching though...

One thing they're looking at is that all five of you are suddenly wearing a glowing white cloak with a golden embroidered insignia of the Paragons. Torvena must have given you more than just some combat benefits with her magic.

1) If you need to insert anything your character did throughout the timeline above, feel free.
2) Once Linora gave you warning, you had 10 rounds to act, but all the citizens being safe assumes you assisted in some way for at least 4 rounds, so each of you would have 6 additional rounds to prepare in whatever way you see fit.
3) ROLL INITIATIVE! woohoo! Luckily no one will be flat-footed no matter what, but we'll still need an order.
4) The portals are forming across the main walkway behind the stage (you can see a sort of cloudiness that pretty much goes from E1 to P1) and in the middle of the dining tables in the lounge (going from B3 to B8).
5) Torvena's spells made any weapon you carry metalline (bypasses any metal based DR), aligned (bypasses any alignment based DR) and transmuting (weapon treated as slashing/piercing/bludgeoning for bypassing DR).

In the morning, Corinthius prepares his normal routine when expecting a fight: a spell to improve his weapon and two spells to improve his admittedly lackluster physical strength. It has the side-effect of giving him the maw of a bear, so he wears a helmet when posing as a guard to keep from drawing too much attention.

He eyes the auctionhouse with an appreciative eye for the work that went into making it. Part of him feels bad for the battle that is soon to be waged, but he knows there is little alternative. He patrols the floor, patiently awaiting the time when the enemy will make their attack. His holy symbol sits comfortably on his chest, and with it on and a battle to be waged he feels no doubt or hesitation...save the nagging still at the back of his mind, that has been there since that enemy cleric spoke to him. Maybe he can ask Lady Linora what she knows of him after this battle is over...

When said Lady contacts them, and after the guard commands the audience, he helps to shuffle them into the safe zones. He drops the pellet that Lady Enivera gave them just in case before the Wall of Force goes back up. In the time remaining, he holds aloft his holy symbol as he calls to Heironeous for strength and protection; spells are cast and the power of law surrounds him. He removes his helm, to better see and fight his enemies.

He maneuvers himself while he casts, such that he is facing the cloudy portal when he finishes. Sword in hand and shield hovering around him, he faces the enemy gate with a steely gaze and certainty in his heart.

Full Round: If your full round action (maybe a full attack?) involves rolls, include the results here.

Extra Rolls: A thing we'll start using. Basically how it sounds, you make two extra d20 rolls so that if needed, I can use them instead of asking you to roll and waiting. In combat, you'll reroll these each round, even if they don't get used. Unlike some other rolls, I would say just roll them in this place.

If you have a pet, duplicate the relevant parts from above and put there here. If you have more than one, well you have to pay the high price of all those pets...make even more spoiler boxes!

((OOC: PPR, you should probably specify what map you're casting the Wall of Good onto.

Preparations having been made, you wait as the portals coalesce into swirling masses of red, black, and purple energy. The guard squad moves into position, taking up defensive positions in front of the display rooms. It is clear their job is to ensure the citizens feel protected and they are serving as a sort of last line of defense should something go wrong, even if the gesture is artificial compared to actually slaying monsters. Moments before the first enemies appear, Linora's voice speaks to you again. "The demons are accompanied by some other sort of abominations. I'm able to feel them with my mind, but they are unlike anything I've seen before. And there is indeed a leader, a mind flayer of all things. Very strange for one of those creatures of the deep to command monsters of the Abyss. If it shows itself, try to capture it, though if that isn't possible without creating more danger for yourselves, of course do what you must." Then the first creatures break through the portals...

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb404/gabrion/KythonImpaler.png

Indeed the first enemies to attack are almost insect-like creatures that, while monstrous in nature, do not look like any demons you've seen or read about. They charge through the portals rapidly, heading directly towards targets, as though they could see through the swirling energy before they made their first steps. Three enter from the slightly smaller portal in the lounge, two of which charge at Enthos, while the third goes for Tordek. Four more charge through the larger portal in the main auction room, two of each going straight for the Leskylors (the Leskylor that is attacked by two of them is slain with the second attack, while the second Leskylor is damaged [28 points] by the one creature that attacks it, but is still standing). The first creature through the portal in the main room is assailed by a blast from Octavia, which stops it in its tracks.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb404/gabrion/WhisperDemon.png

Only a moment after the demon-like-insect-like creatures come through the portal, two more figures come through in the main Auction room, though they enter approximately 20 feet up, flying through. They are pale-green, almost translucent creatures. As soon as they enter the room, a strange presence enters your mind (or at least you feel it trying to)...whispers of pure madness. The gibbering apparently gets through to two of the guards - one of whom stands slack jawed as if totally unaware of his surroundings, while the other actually chops at his own leg with his sword!

If you are in the main Auction room, unless immune to mind-affecting or compulsions, make two will saves, DC 21 each. Protection from evil or similar does not guard against this. If you fail either, roll 1d100 for the effects of confusion (lasts one round). If you roll higher than 51, instead of the normal effects of confusion, you automatically do melee damage to yourself as you would if you made a normal attack.

A moment after the green floating demons appear, a solitary figure steps onto the left side of the stage. He is almost human in appearance, though with clear demonic influence - almost reddish skin with black marks on it. He is wearing what looks like some sort of light armor and carries a blade in each hand. Instead of turning toward the group, he turns and heads toward the door that leads towards the stairs down to the vault. The door is locked,
but he is currently tinkering with it.
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb404/gabrion/Kevlezu.png
Even if you don't see him, you know something is present in that area if you make a DC 33 Listen check.

Even if you can't see him, you sense the creature in the spoiler above this through mindsight. It is an outsider with INT 17

WD = Green flying demon

K = Insect/demon creature

Everyone, I'm mostly treating the regular furniture in the two rooms as though it is a non-factor, since I don't want extra headache. It's still there for purposes that really matter, but basically doesn't have an impact on movement modes.

If I get something wrong in a round, or miss something, please spell it out in an OOC note and I'll fix it retroactively.

If you want to make a knowledge check to gain info about anything we fight, they are all knowledge: the planes (for now). Though as a metagame note, the "K" creatures are new to the world, nobody will have any knowledge about them.

Enthos, I made the assumption that you would use either trip or stand still on the two enemies charging you. Feel free to clarify.

Tordek, I noticed after updating the map that your icon has had the wrong letter in it. It's the pale green one with a "C" in the lounge, though it should obviously have a "T" instead.

Octavia (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=937817)
Octavia moves towards the center of the room and then lets out an awful psychic wail, the mad energy washing over the minds of their foes.

Her voice sounds clearly in the party's minds, though no sound escapes her lips. "There is an invisible demon trying to get in the vault, I can sense his presence!"

Vidoro is confused this round.

Her "shout" is telepathic, so no enemies heard.

Also, I'll probably use Bastion this round to keep the second Leskylor alive (too much effort to use retroactively this round to save the first :smalltongue:) so please let me know exactly how much damage it takes. No, I won't, he's confused and probably cannon fodder at this point.

Strange creatures one after another; though his faith protects him against the demons' insanity, Corinthius is disheartened to see the guards succumb. He would need to take their attention away from the incapacitated guards, quickly.

Octavia's call makes him grimace; though he had not seen the other demon, he trusts the woman's words. Calling on his inner reserve of strength he improves his awareness of the world; his territory is a pool of crystal clear water, and those who intrude upon it cause ripples he can feel on his skin.

He makes a split second decision on the side to attack; the remaining Leskylor will hold for a bit longer, hopefully, and so he will go to the other side. Foul monstrosities, you will be purged from this place! he cries in Abyssal, flying closer to the monsters that had killed the Leskylor. Tremble before the glory of one of Heironeous' servants and know your folly!

He takes up his stance in midair, and his blade flashes as he cuts into his enemies. Using all at his disposal, he bites and claws at his opponents as well, razor-sharp teeth and claws aiming for blood.

Tordek & Merril (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=934719)

Thrilled to finally be taking the fight to the enemy, Tordek wears an eager grin most of the morning. When Torvena's beam(s) hit Moradin's Tear you can hear the war axe say, "Hmm... Tingly."

-----------------------------------

Later at the auction, when [Diviner's Name] says that the demons are about to appear, the dwarf needs to be shaken vigorously by Merril before awaking and aiding in the evacuations. Then the dwarf prepares his own enchantments and stands ready with Merril by his side to repel the Demon spawn.

Round 1: Nothing
Round 2: Nothing
Round 3: Shield +4 Shield bonus to AC lasts 110 rounds (107 by my first round of combat)
Round 4: Silverbeard +2 sacred bonus to AC 4 inspiration points spent lasts 50 rounds (48 by first round)
Round 5: Sonic Weapon +1d6 sonic damage to enemies (Added to Moradin's Tear) lasts for 110 rounds (109 by first round). Also Swift action to activate my Greater Blurring Full Plate 20% miss chance for 100 rounds (99 by first round)
Round 6: Bite of the Weretiger Lasts 11 rounds. Also swift action activates Minor Aura: Motivate Dexterity so allies within 60ft. gain a +5 to their initiative rolls (I think only Enthos gets this?), and finally Free action Protective Aura (20ft. Radius centered on me, +4 deflection bonus against evil, +4 resistance bonus to all saves vs. evil, lesser globe of invulnerability) I can reactivate this as a free action so assume I always do so and that it is always up unless it gets taken down.

------------------------------------------------

Moradin's Tear in hand, Tordek growls his displeasure at the evil creatures that leap through the portal thirsting for battle, he will slake their thirst for good. He calls on the power of the rune which he has tattooed into his flesh. The rune writhes and snakes out across his exposed skin for a moment, looking identical to the black tentacles which burst forth from the floor, grabbing at everything in their reach, which just so happens to be the demons...

Nearby, Merril stays out of melee range behind Tordek and begins with a salvo of Magic Missiles at the demon sitting at the extremes of Enthos's reach (K6).

Sorry for being so late. Merril would be 5 ft. behind Tordek (I6). Also the Concentration check to use Black Tentacles defensively and avoid AoOs succeeds on a roll of 1 so I won't bother rolling it. Black Tentacles is centered on C7 since that gets all the baddies without getting me or Enthos I believe. (No save grapple check below)

Within 60ft. of Tordek: +5 to dex checks, skills, and Inititative
Within 20ft. of Tordek: Protective Aura: Double strength Prot. from Evil (same as prot from evil but +4 to AC and saves vs evil (Deflection and resistance respectively so doesn't stack with Octavia's deflection AC boost)) and Lesser Globe of Invulnerability (No 3rd level spells inside the globe).

The Heroes

Octavia moves more toward the center of the room and lets out a hideous scream. It visibly impacts one of the green flying demons, as well as the creature who came through the portal first, though the latter is already unable to act normally due to Octavia's blast.

Oberon's servant drops marbles on the floor, while the half-fey assesses the creatures and prepares to act.

Corinithius flies forward in a burst and then attacks the two creatures who killed the Leskylor. His righteous wrath is impressive to behold, slaying the first creature in a single mighty swing, and swiftly dispatching the second with two more cuts from his blade.

Enthos' quick work with his chain threw the two enemies nearest him off balance as they tried to charge, knocking them both to the ground. He followed up by snapping his chain with practiced speed, cutting deep into the one on his left, but missing the one on his right. Not deterred, he focuses one more mighty blow toward the uninjured enemy, his spiked chain this time finding purchase.

Tordek works his arcane mysteries, making a mass of black tentacles in front of the portal. The two enemies tripped by Enthos are further immobilized as the tentacles wrap around them, but the third creature, nearest Tordek, displays a mighty burst of strength and bats away the tentacles. Meanwhile, Merril lends assistance by shooting magical bolts of energy at one of the damaged/tripped/grappled enemies.

Linora

Linora's now familiar voice touches your minds again. "It's extremely difficult to exert influence through such a tenuous link, but I'm extending some measure of protection to the guards in the room. Those ghostly demons seem to be invading their minds. I'm afraid it won't shield them completely, but hopefully they won't harm themselves.

Also, something is...wrong. "I feel the power of the portal magic beginning again, but I'm certain this was not part of their plan. Perhaps they did not expect resistance and are shifting the attack. The energy seems to be targeted at the high market several blocks over in that district. I'm afraid what this could mean as many citizens are still shopping at this hour. There is nothing you can do about it now though, continue to fight back the attackers there. We will discuss options here."

The Spectators

Most of the citizens were just confused and maybe a bit scared when they were ushered into the side rooms. When the portals opened and creatures came through, most of the looked frightened - especially by the vicious double charge that took down one of the Leskylors. As the heroes begin to fight back though, they start to look on more with some curiosity, as it dawns on them that they are not being targeted by anything dangerous. By the time Corinithius makes his vicious counter attacks against the two bug creatures, slicing and dicing them in spectacular fashion, a few even pump their firsts and make inaudible cheers.

The Bad Guys

Two of the insect like creatures are slain, one temporarily disabled, and two more have been immobilized by Enthos and Tordek. The remaining on in the Auction room attacks the Leskylor in front of him once more, first biting at him, then clawing rapidly with all four arms. The wounds are enough to bring the creature down (Bite hits for 17, three claws hit for 12, 9, and 10, all are magical which I think is the only DR the creature has? Total damage he's take so far is 28 from last round + 48 this round = 76). The other steps to H7 to avoid the tentacles, then attacks Tordek, first with a bite, then four swipes of his claws. The first attack looks almost guided supernaturally as though it couldn't possibly miss - indeed its jaws snap quickly, biting flesh on Tordeks arm, leaving behind some sort of toxic substance, but it doesn't seem to have an effect on the dwarf (25 piercing/magical damage and Fort save DC 19 or take 5 STR damage...never mind, you can't fail). The creature's claw attack seem futile though - one almost comes close to striking Tordek, but the dwarf's defenses are too much for the creature and he misses with all of them.

One of the floating demons in the main auction room is unable to act, being dazed by Octavia's scream. The other flies overhead the party, out of reach of anyone, and passes into the lounge. As it reaches the threshold of the wall of good, there is a small flash of light, but the creature seems to move through it unimpeded. As soon as it passes through the wall, the whispering voices trying to enter your minds are diminished, but Tordek and Enthos are now assailed by the same maddening whispers (DC 21 will save or become confused. If confused, roll 1d100 for the action you take, and if the result is 51 or greater, do damage to yourself with normal melee attack).

The invisible humanoid demon finishes fiddling with the door and steps through it, though only Octavia and Corinthius sense this movement.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb404/gabrion/ArrowDemon.png
More assailants then come through the portal, first four emaciated green-skinned demons with four arms, holding two bows each. They seem to have come prepared, simply stepping into the room and immediately firing off volleys of arrows with both their bows. Two target Corinithius, each firing six arrows at him. As the arrows fly, they actually split into two, and the cleric is faced by a total of 24 arrows coming at him! His defenses are strong though and only two sets of the arrows strike true, seemingly more by luck than anything else. When the arrows strike, the tips explode with a small burst of acid, caustically burning the wounds they create (two attacks hit due to nat 20s, but failed to confirm crit, though they actually result in two arrows each as they are splitting arrow attacks. Base damage is 14+19+19+18=70 piercing, with 5+4+1+2=12 Acid damage). The third fires six splitting arrows at Oberon, three sets of which connect. The metal tips are particularly painful for the fey-blooded man, but at the same time his skin is hardened against any attacks not made with special iron (23+19+26+20+24+24=136 piercing damage. This includes cold iron vulnerability, but not DR, so each attack should be reduced by 10 points, for total of 76 piercing damage). The final demon targets Octavia with his bows, but just as he's about to release his first arrow, he pauses, for some reason unable to attack (failed vs. sanctuary).

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb404/gabrion/ShadowDemon.png

In the lounge, a pair of black shadowy figures come through the portal, flying about 15 feet off the ground. They each hold a small object, which they touch while chanting the words to a spell. Each object is imbued with a deep darkness that is physically painful for those good aligned in the area. They toss the objects into the room, presumably to blanket their actions (Damning Darkness spell, Enthos, Tordek, and Merril each take 8 points unholy damage).

Sorry guys, sort of ran out of time with this post, so if there are mistakes we'll just have to roll with it an make corrections. If I list anything as affecting you, but it doesn't because of some effect or action you take, simply state that when you make your next post and I'll update it tomorrow. Also Tordek I failed once again to change your Icon. Doh.

Oberon winces at the pain, but shrugs it off. He then runs forward next to the demon who shot him, and whips his small dagger at exceeding speed, attempting to stab it.

The new information from Linora is disconcerting, and for a moment he feels irrational annoyance at the Paragons. Why had they not thought of that; why had Linora not considered it, in her hours spent studying them? With all the discipline he has forged in his decades of life, he brings his emotions under control and merely thinks: They are only human, after all. ...Relatively.

The new demons appearance surprises the man of faith, enough so that four of the arrows find their mark through his defenses. The acid splatters over his skin and on his wounds and slides off ineffectually; his faith grants him protection from such injuries. The physical arrows, however, hurt quite a lot (in his younger days, Corinthius would have been swearing up a storm at this point). In the present, he merely grits his teeth as the wounds begin to inch closed.

Too many enemies with ranged attacks, who can attack Octavia or the guards. His belt buckle flashes again, brighter, as he takes out a small iron rod. He points it at the further group of enemies and gathers his holy energy. By Heironeous, I command you all: Halt.

He drops the iron rod and moves slightly forward, close enough to touch the nearest demon. Prepare to be reduced to the energy from whence you came, monstrosity. His head and hand lash out first, preceding the vicious flash of his sword as he performs his furious katas.

Tordek & Merril (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=934719)

Shaking off the demonic whispers while choking on the unholy darkness, Tordek urges his allies away from the disadvantageous new element, "Enthos! Merril! Out of the Darkness! Tactical Withdrawal! We are better off fighting them out of this stuff!"

Complying with her Partner's commands, Merril lithely somersaults out of the darkness, sending two missiles of force at the whispering green thing as she does so, then she further retreats to the corner of the room.

For Tordek's part, he moves close to the edge of the darkness, but with an enemy so near he cannot fully escape it. To help cover his retreat he sends Moradin's Tear in deadly arcs to stave the beast off. "Have a taste of the edge on Moradin's Tear!" cries Tordek as he swings wildly into the darkness.

The Heroes

Octavia calls on her healing power, and the wounds that would have been serious for most heroes simply disappear, including those she took upon herself by shielding her summon.

The volley of arrows is enough to force Oberon into action, but it's hard to tell exactly what he does. One moment he is standing in the middle of the room, the next he is standing next to an arrow demon whose torso simply falls off its body. His movements are so fast it's difficult to tell what the man did to obliterate the foe.

Corinithius calls on his reserves once more act, both calling down a wrathful spell against the enemies to his right, while also floating forward and launching a furious series of attacks against the demons who fired their bows at him, dropping one arrow demon, and then attacking twice against the invisible demon through the hallway.

Enthos shrugs off the incessant whispering of the green demon that came through the wall behind him and moves back out of the darkness, better positioning himself to fight off the enemies.

Tordek takes a step backward, working his way toward the edge of the darkness. He doesn't fully move out though, instead taking the chance to attack the foe that closed on him. Meanwhile, Merril likwise moves further away from the direct danger, while the black tentacles continue to wreak havoc on the enemies.

The Spectators

Any of the citizens who were still worried about what was unfolding before them, seem to switch into the "this is a pretty good show" crowd when the see Octavia's healing magic. Given how powerful the Cleric and the other man seem to be, taking down foes left and right, the fact that the woman with them can miraculously cure seemingly even terrible wounds, well this is shaping up to be more like an entertainment venue than any actual threat. And nobles like nothing more than good entertainment!

The Bad Guys

Only two of the Kythons remain in the main room, but neither are able to act, instead standing perfectly still at the magical command from Conrinthius. Two Kythons in the lounge room continue to be held by the black tentacles, which have now gained enough purchase to constrict and hurt the creatures. The third Kython in the lounge again launches a series of attacks against Tordek, though this time neither his bite or his four claw attacks connect.

The Arrow Demons seem to be the only ones able to resist Corinithius' command, though at this point two of them are already dead. Seeing how quickly their allies were dispatched, they decide to reposition, each simply disappearing in a flash, only to reappear on top of the display rooms where the spectators are located. Fortunately, it seems this maneuver took enough concetration that they are not able to launch another series of attacks after moving.

The Whisper Demon in the main room is likewise affected by Corinthius' command, simply floating in mid air, still unable to act. The one in the lounge however, flies toward Enthos, attempting to swipe at him. Enthos' chain seems to pass through the creature as he takes the opportunity to attack while it is advancing, repeatedly failing to stop the creature and it ends up floating next to him, striking with one of its claws (14 damage).

The newly appeared black shadow demons in the lounge fly through the darkness they created, attempting to attack Tordek and Enthos. While they seem insubstantial, their claws seem to partially materialize as they swing their attacks, each of which hits one of the heroes (7 dmg Enthos, 3 dmg Tordek)

Lastly, the invisible demon in the hallway to the vault seems surprised when he suffers one of Corinthius' attacks, but he is otherwise undeterred. He moves down the stairway, out of sight, though a shimmering barrier appears briefly in the passage he used to get from the main room to the stairway.

The fact that no new combatants enter the room substantiates Linora's claim that they may be shifting the attack.

Linora

Linora comes through your minds again. "No new attackers? Yes, they've certainly shifted their attack. Our discussion here was virtually non-existant though I'm afraid - Gerald has gone. It was forbidden, but he's gone anyway. I suggest you remove the remaining foes there and then move to the market as quickly as possible."

So this round is a bit messy, mostly down in the lounge room. First though, summary of the Auction Room. Oberon, you kill the demon you attacked. Corinthius, you likewise kill one and wound the Kev (can't attack the other arrow demon because he's already dead from Oberon), but he doesn't go down. I had to check the initiative on this because if you went first I would have had you kill both Arrow Demons and then Oberon could have gone for a third one, but he actually had a higher initiative count, so I went with his initial action. Also, most of the creatures to the right fail vs command, but the two surviving arrow demons did not. They dim doored to their new locations on the map, about 10 feet up on the slopped ceiling of the display rooms.

The Whisper Demon has the highest initiative so he moved toward Enthos to attack first. He has to move at least 4 squares because he is elevated a bit. Long story short, he's incorporeal (as are the shadow demons), so Enthos would have to bypass that on a d100 roll to hit with his AoOs. I rolled 4d100 to speed this up and simulate all the AoOs in case you had to use them, but obviously I would not use further if the first one stopped the creature. Problem is, the rolls were 39, 21, 7, and 4. So assuming Enthos continues to use his AoOs as the Whisper Demon (and then Shadow thing) advance, all four end up failing to pass the 50% miss chance.

If there's some other way this plays out, just let me know.

The invisible demon just went down those stairs. I'll go after it and finish it off, you all handle the demons out here.

With a grunt of concentration he squeezes himself into the smaller room, the demon coming into his senses just after he enters through the doorway. The stairs as well offer some resistance to the enlarged man, but he is able to come up right next to the demon. He spares the words for now, concentrating hard; this demon is an infiltrator, and infiltrators tend to have more information than brutes. Though the angling is difficult in the narrow space, he attempts to hit the demon with the flat of his blade to knock it out for later questioning.

Tordek & Merril (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=934719)

Shrugging off the blow from the shadowy foe, Tordek contemptuously turns his back on the enemy and moves to finally escape the darkness. Once a safe distance from the darkness, Tordek grins, and with a powerful bark of arcane power attempts to send the corporeal foe into the awaiting mass of tentacles Tordek summoned previously.

Meanwhile, Merril falters slightly at the Green incorporeal demon's whispers, but manages to continue her barrage upon it. Seeing his partner nearly overwhelmed, Tordek cajoles his allies to persevere against the corrosive influence of their enemies upon their fighting spirit, waving Moradin's Tear above his head like a banner as he does so.

The Heroes

Octavia absorbs some the damage vidoro would have done to himself, the creature being confused by the whispers of the demon, then lets out another scream.

Oberon's moves to one of the Kythons and once again his knife flashes more quickly than the eye can track, and the creature is cut in two.

Corinithius squeezes into the small hallway leading down to the vault and lets out an attack against the demon presumably trying to make his way into the spaces where the valuables are stored. Thanks to his attack against the creature the round before, he's able to bring it down, even though he's swinging carefully so as to incapacitate the foe rather than just kill it.

Enthos having stopped his attackers in their tracks, turns to attack them with his chain. His first two attacks are enough to bring the enemy down and so he swings the chain at the shadow demon with what momentum is left, cutting it deeply.

Tordek moves free of the stiffling darkness, then sends a push of magical energy that results in the Kython near him flying back into the tentacles, where he is wrapped up by one of them and held in place.

The Spectators

At this point the citizens are clearly not very frightened of what's going on, it's become a sort of curious spectacle for them, and most have moved up to the edge of the display windows to clearly see what's going on.

The Bad Guys

One more Kython in the main room is slain, and the other is still disabled. All three in the lounge are held tight by the tentacles.

The whisper demon in the main auction room is still alive, but also still commanded by Corinthius, and thus unable to act.

The invisible humanoid demon is in the process of casting a spell, presumable something to breech the vault door at the bottom of the steps, when he is abruptly knocked out by Corinithius.

The arrow demons, having fled across the room for a better vantage point, now take the opportunity to fire at their foes once again. AD2 fires six arrows at Octavia and AD1 fires six at Oberon, all of which split in the air, making for twelve arrows flying at each hero. Five of them strike Ocatavia, causing piercing wounds, but her resistances protect her from the acid that explodes from the arrows (15+13+15+19+17=79 piercing). Four arrows strike Oberon, again the metal tips causing extra pain, but his natural defenses mitigating much of it (24+20+22+18=84 damage, -40 from DR, so 44 total).

While no new enemies appear from the portals, a deep voice can be heard coming from both of them. "It is not your place to defy us. We are an inevitability. This is not victory." The words are followed by a bass-filled roar, and the shadow demons in the lounge attempt to move back toward the portal there, only to be tripped once again by Enthos, whirling his chain like an artist. Enthos' attack against Shadow Demon 2, which he already wounded, is enough to dissipate it into a black puff.

Linora

Linora's speaks in your minds again. "No new enemies, and I believe that voice was issuing some sort of command to retreat. You still need to ensure all the enemies are gone from that place before you leave, but the portals in the market are opening now. Gerald is there and no doubt he can hold them, but the consequences will be dire. Good work on that thief Corinthius, the guard captain should have some magical restraints to take him into custody when you are done. Sted will no doubt wish to find out what he was doing heading for the vaults."

Corinthius regards the mental image of the downed demon for a split second before moving out of the hallway and back into the main auction room. He cannot reach either bow-wielding demon quickly enough, so he points an iron rod at the one closest to him and intones a holy word of command.

Tordek & Merril (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=934719)

Not liking the sound of 'Consequences' should Gerald hold back the tide of evil in the market nearby, Tordek decides that they need to pick up the pace of this fight, which means getting rid of those annoying darkness globes that hinder them. "Oi Enthos! I will try knocking out their darkness, but it might knock out me own spell that is holding those three beasts back! Be ready!"

That said, Tordek moves to block any attack to Merril should the beasts indeed be freed from the black tentacles he summoned, and then sends out his own magic to negate the darkness swirling before them.
