My player and I are building a black knight character (MM2), and everything was fine until we got to damage reduction. What does "Damage Reduction 15/+1" mean? Does it mean except for weapons with +1 on them? Or is it reduce by 15 beyond the first point of damage? I can't seem to find where this means anywhere.

Note: it does not say "15/magic", it says "15/+1".

DR of X/+Y is a thing from 3.0, which MM2 is still a part of. Essentially, a DR of 15/+1 means that the creature has a DR of 15 that is bypassed by at least having a +1 weapon. DR 15/+2 is the same, but bypassed by a +2 weapon.

For 3.5, it can be easily just replaced by a /magic instead of /+1. Except for perhaps extremely high level like 20/+5, which might need something more to be meaningful.

To add to this, in general if you want to use 3.0 content you need to find a 3.5 update of it. The MM2 update was released in a general 3.5 update booklet that should still be on the WotC site, if you google 3.5 update booklet you should find it.

The 3.5 update booklets are over here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a). The booklet for MMII doesn't have an update for the Death Knight's DR (naturally), but DR/Magic is, as previously stated, an entirely appropriate conversion.

The number ought to be different too, though. DR numbers were lowered in the 3.0->3.5 transition.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't realized that the MM2 wasn't a 3.5 book. I looked at the page but couldn't find anything in Death Knight about damage reduction. We decided to go with the 15/magic for his character. (Yes, it's a high DR, but he has one hit die as a level 6 character, I feel okay with giving him that.) Thanks again for the clarification.
