( http://www.d20srd.org for those interested) would there be online 1st/2nd edition rules online?

No, the 1st and 2nd editions were before the open d20 system. There are several places that sell old edition e-books though.

I think I saw something that was "srd-like" for first edition but it also was a bit of "makeover" and I don't remember the link... as for 2nd I admit I know a site that has many books in .rtf format, but since I have no clue on "legal concerns" I'll refrain posting the link until someone ensures me it isn't againts the law.

[EDIT] Ninjad - it seems that my concerns were answered.

Yes, there are rules for (A)D&D available free online through OSRIC (http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/). They are not exactly the same, since certain things had to be tidied up and the SRD only allows Dark Vision, not Infra Vision, but it is a burgeoning market for which a number of 'Old School' products are being released.

[Edit] I strongly urge you to look at the Knights and Knaves (http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/phpbb/index.php) Forum for more information.
