The five of you have trained for 2 years now within the Mountain Fortress of the Guild of Dragon Bonded. Of nearly one hundred trainees only you remain, these trials you have each faced have been grueling and you have learned a great deal in this time. But yesterday, all of your hard work has paid off! You stand before the three Grandmasters as they hand each of you an official acolytes pendant, which can be incorporated into your own gear as you see fit. They name you "Dragon Clutch", and inform each of you of your final test to become true Dragon Bonded. Your group must travel through the mountains, pass through the Bloodwood, cross the Violet Sea and reach the capital city of Skarra on the Cracked Isle. Events are unfolding and new Dragon bound are needed to prepare for the years ahead. Reports say that many dark forces are stirring and already reports have claimed that villages and small towns are being attacked by multiple forces, each seeking to make their own claim on the world.

You each are given the next 24 hours to gather your things, rest, and prepare for the journey. You will leave the next day at the light of dawn, setting out from the Southern Pass. The Grandmasters remind that all five of you must make it to the capital, or the trial will have failed, as it takes five to be bound for a Clutch to become a Flight. Each Grandmaster then departs to their respective chambers, leaving the five of you to prepare in your own way.

The Mountain Fortress is divided into 5 regions. The Courtyards are open tot eh sky but surrounded by spires so they can only be accessed by air or through the passages; the Sanctum includes a large library, various laboratories, meditation halls, and the medical ward, Grandmaster Elderrash Kallenon has his study here; the Forges deep within the mountain are where the Dragon Bound create their weapons, armor, tools, and dragon barding, and is also the location of several tunnels leading into the Underdark, each guarded by its own gatehouse, the largest of which is defended by Grandmaster Slate Foehammer; the Wards are the heart of the Fortress, including the kitchen, main barracks, living quarters, training rooms, and dining hall; and lastly the Orchard is a small forest inside the mountain, grown using magical daylight, with Gardens along its edges, and Zephy Red-mist tends them. As the newly appointed Dragon Clutch you may go anywhere within the Fortress.

Koma bows to the Masters as they depart. He then returns to his quarters and gathers his things before making his way to the Orchard to meditate. One final reminder of a distant past. One where life had meaning.

It is now time to forge a new meaning.

(Koma stands nearly six feet tall. He wears a wide brimmed hat over his rat-like head to keep the sun out of his eyes. A thin band of Oriental silk can be seen from time to time beneath the hat. A single adamantine bullet adorns his hatband. He is cloaked in a long soiled duster, well worn and descernably weathered. The duster reaches to his ankles. Beneath it he wears a loose fitting whitish flaxen shirt belted over plain black pants. A leather strap is draped across his shoulder and crosses to his waist, several small pouches adorn this strap. His belt bears a large tiger's eye stone set in a tiger maw buckle. There is mud on his boots and mystery in his eyes. He smokes a long clay pipe that often leaves a lingering sweet scent as he passes.

He rides atop a reptile that is 6' tall and 10' long. Its Red eyes and black scaled skin strongly resemble a satanic leaf tailed gecko. )

As Koma sits and things, brief flashes of memory fill his mind.

Fire. Inhuman Screams. Clashing of blades. A whisper of his name. A woman's face, smiling, then red-washed. A massive yellow eye with a star pupil staring at him.

The images send a shiver up his spine.

Edge finds about all of her gear, but misses quite of a bit of her clothing. She focuses her red eyes on the dimly room as she runs her long sender fingers through her long sliver hair. At over six foot tall, she towers over most beings inhabiting the Mountain Fortress. Her body is slender with long legs wearing travelling pants tucked into her boots held up by a belt with added holes to buckle around her skinny frame. Her travelling shirt hangs loose over her small shoulders and over her modest busom. Her dark mauve skin was matte in darkening room. She tucked her silver hair behind her long pointed ears, craned around her narrow neck, and sighed as she searched her room again.

Aladar
2014-07-08, 09:09 PM
Aladar was restless. The 5'8" 180lb Ifrit was eager for adventure, for glory, and tomorrow does not come fast enough for him. He runs his fingers through his bright orange and yellow hair, the strands flickering and waving around them like flames themselves. He traces them along the black silk headband that adorns his forehead, a gold, staring eye in the center, heavy lidded, seeming bored. He thinks for a moment, running through his checklist of gear before he gives up and mentally probes the band. Am I prepared for tomorrow? He addresses the band, and he receives a positive response, or so he feels. He grabs the washbowl from the table near his bed and stares into his reflection, a somewhat attractive man looking back at him, with a strong chin and a hawkish nose, piercing brown eyes staring back into his own. He brushes a stray strand of hair behind one of his pointed, elflike ears before he cups the water in his hands and washes his face. Droplets hang on his brassy colored skin like flecks of gold until he dries them off. When he finishes washing, he pulls on a pair of rings, one with the vague image of a grappling hook upon its face.

He stands, his well built frame wearing only leather trousers as he paces before he grabs his Glaive-guisarme, twirling it in his hands before he decides to train. Donning his suit of heavy plate armor, he straps himself in to his protective spiked shell before he grabs his helm. It is a pretty thing, at least to him. A sallet helm with an almost obnoxious red plume crowning the top, its visor all but hid his eyes.

Just a bit more practice! He heads towards the training hall, intent to practice with his polearm for a few more hours as he mentally prepares himself for what could be the most important journey of his life.

"Finally."

Edge said to herself, annoyed.

She had found the rest of her gear. Preparing herself, she strapped on her wrist sheath to her right wrist under her sleeve and hide her Adamantine Dagger. Strapped to her left side was her Sword of Subtlety. She hung the acolyte's pendent from her long Drow neck. On her left index finger, she slides on her Thieves Ring. She packed everything else, but her special Bag of Holding I, into her Bag of Holding III.

I need some goggles from the forges before I go, she thinks to herself.

During her time in the Mountain Fortress, the masters and teachers have been rather accommodating to her nocturnal nature, but the upcoming journey would not be as accommodating. So she was going to need some eye wear before she headed off.

Ready to make her final rounds before resting, she slung her bags over her shoulder and left her dorm, entering the hall. She looked around the hall

Aladar finds his preferred training hall unused. In it are several sparring golems which are currently in standby. While not as creative as living opponents, they made up for their lack of finesse and flexibility by being persistent and durable. They were also somehow programmed to not do lethal damage while sparring... unless the safeties were removed. The room itself is 60ft by 80ft with the ceiling 40ft high, the walls adorned with sparring weapons and decorative banners. The golems are tucked away in alcoves on the far side.

Aladar has several choices before him as an "opponent": A winged gargoyle, a golem of soft clay, a stoen golem carved like a dwarven soldier only 10ft tall, and a 20ft tall black armored golem with a furnace cover on it's abdomen, from which flames can be seen.

Aladar
2014-07-08, 09:31 PM
Aladar looked up at the 20ft golem, sorely tempted to try his luck. However, even he was intimidated by such a massive construct, and so he took the more junior of the options. The 10ft dwarven soldier golem was his target. He stood and stared at it for a moment before settling in to a guard, waiting for it to approach... that is... if he didn't need to turn it on himself.

Edge sees two servants, walking in the opposite direction as her. They do not see her.

She takes a piece of chalk from her Rogues' Kit from her Bag of Holding III and draws a line along the bottom length underneath the door and then locks it. If someone were to break into her room, they would smudge the chalk line. Satisfied with her security measures, she stores the stick of chalk back in her Rogues' Kit and heads down to the forges to try get or purchase some forge goggles.

Mewla the groups lithe and very outgoing cleric chose to spend the last of her time at the fortress basking in the sun on a patch of ground under the trees of the orchard. Of course as usual the feline chose to wear barely enough silk to keep herself decent to prying eyes. The holy girl barely reached five and a half feet tall and true to her race was very light and dainty with snowy fur streaked through with black to match the hair on the top of her head. All that darkness only seemed to off set her alarmingly blue eyes; which currently were closed as she purred away in the sunlight. Though almost alarmingly young to be so devout in her faith nothing could shake the young woman from her beliefs in her Goddess and the morals that belief set before her, even if her morals weren't everyone else's.

Meanwhile, in the training hall:

Aladar settles in his guard slightly and murmers a command, the head of his glaive bursting into flames before he gives a challenging bellow and rushes the construct. Drawing his Glaive back over his shoulder, he gives a mighty swing, impacting with a resounding clang that can probably be heard elsewhere in the complex. Its a solid hit, and the magic of the Glaive ignites the construct, leaving it a blazing inferno as the ifrit pivots, striking the golem twice more, good hits as well, but not as glorious as the initial impact.

He takes a few paces back, holding his weapon in a guard as he prepares for the inevitable retaliatory strike. No way would it go down with just a single flurry, still... he couldnt help feeling a bit giddy, his grin visible beneath his visor.

When she spotted Koma she couldn't help but hiss softly, though not in a threatening way as could be noted by her crossed arms, tilted out hip and teasing pout.

"I know that was you Koma! You know I don't like surprises!" Her voice was soft and musical, with the faintest roll of her r's.

If truth be told she didn't so much mind as log as it was one of her friends, they didn't grab her, and it didn't deal with the undead. The mere flutter of memory was enough to make the young felines ears press back. If this was were her thoughts were going it was sure to be a bad day.

The first blow of Aladar's weapon sinks into the stone hide, the flames erupting and engulfing the golem. The follow up hits however barely scratch it, though the flames do some small amount of damage. The Golem raises its fists and swings down, but it must be slower than a typical golem, as it misses by a good amount. That's probably the safety limitations in play. Aladar knows the command word to disable them, but if he does then when the golem does land a blow it will do more than just bruise him.

(Golem takes 26 damage and 12 fire damage, and is now on fire)

Globber walks out of a side room near the center of the keep, strange noises and bubbling sounds following him out as he closes the door behind him. He stares intently at the thick book in his hands as he flips the pages filled with arcane and, to those not trained, extremely confusing equations and wordings. The book and pages are singed around the edges, with some pages having small holes burned in them. He pulls out a small flask from his belt and looks from the flask to the pages, intense concentration scrawled across his green face. He wanders around the interior of the keep, not paying attention to where he's going.

(Globber is about 5 foot even. His teeth stick out of his mouth when he closes it and his nose is pointed and crooked, looking like it had broken at some point and been set badly. His ears are pointed and filled with earrings and holes in it, looking ragged around the edges. His clothes look worn and well traveled in, the ubiquitous burns and scorch marks covering it. He has a bandoleer strapped across his chest with different pouches and flasks, both empty and full, covering it. He has a belt around his waist with the same gear attached to it.)

In the Orchard, several workers go about their daily routine of tending to the trees and gardens, and other people of the Fortress spend time relaxing. No one really bothers the three recruits, leaving them to talk among themselves.

Globber wanders the halls reading from his book, and ends up wandering into the kitchens, his stomach seems to be controlling his feet while his mind is focused elsewhere.

In the sparring room, Aladar miscalculates a swing, striking the golem with the flat of his blade. The impact sends a jolt through his arm and his weapon bounces back at a weird angle, the pole of it striking him hard in the head, the impact enough to knock him onto his back and out cold for several moment. With its target unconscious, the golem goes back to its position, switching to standby and beginning self repairs.

He walks back taking careful note of the conditions, any slight slope in the land, any wind that might be present. When he returns to the front of the range he jokes around a bit with the Dwarves, who have noticed a distinct lack of armaments.
Koma turns toward the target and (move action) opens a pouch on his bandoleer roughly the size of his hand and draws out a pepperbox rifle with a long scope mounted on top. He takes a deep breath as he steadies his aim (move action). He waits for the Dwarves to take their shots.

Looking to the rest of the party he says.

"What do you say? Do you want to go give the little pyromaniac a hand?"

Aladar huffs and seems more than a little dissapointed in the lack of meat, but he shows his displeasure by getting the next best thing: Potatoes and beets and the like. It should be noted that there is nothing green on his plate, as though he avoided the color entirely. He took a tankard and filled it with spiced ale, not top shelf, but not swill either.

Once he had food, he found himself a seat at one of the long tables, straddling the bench and leaning his side against the table lazily as he eats.

"Someone remind meh." He says between bites. "If one of us crokes before we depart, we get a replacement aye? We have to make it as a group. Can't let us leave without a full clutch aye?"

Edge's brows furrowed in annoyance. "The mad bomber went to the Underdark alone?" Aladar had a point. The rest of them would be held up if the goblin were to perish. She did not want to wait any longer to get her dragon. She turned to and looked down at the rodent gunner, Koma. "Very well. I shall accompany you for the mad bomber's sake."

Mewla finally found her way into the mess hall, in all honesty she had gotten lost among the twist and turns due to something having gotten her attention and distracting her. Trying to not draw attention to the fact she had only just arrived she just quietly slipped onto the bench next to Aladar.

"Did I miss anything?" She asked him sweetly, not seeing anything on the menu that she wanted she didn't bother with food.

"We'll be in the Underdark. So those of you without great dark vision will need to prepare accordingly." Edge said looking over to Mewla. "Also, the horrors of the deep are very powerful. So I will be completely armed going in." Edge continued to explain.

Edge, being a Drow, had explored the depths of the Underdark caverns at the Mountain Fortress to some extent, but as with her own home tunnels, there is no telling how deep they go.

Edge started for the Underdark. She was going to need to change her into her armor at one of the guard stations.

"Well, there you are. Which gate are we planning on entering? I will send word to Mewla so that she can find us quickly." Once the gate has been established Koma will reach into his duster and remove a small piece of paper and a pin that resembles a silver raven. He holds the Raven in both hands and whispers some words to it. The raven then grows to the size of a real raven and comes to life, though it is clearly still made of silver. Koma scribbles down the gate information and ties the note to the raven's leg. He focuses his thoughts and produces a mental image of Mewla and the bird flies off.

On the way to the gate Koma stops at the stabling area and returns a moment later strapped securely into the saddle of a large red eyed black gecko. Once at the gate he throws open his duster revealing a second set of arms, he opens two pouches on his bandoleer and draws a pair of polished four-barrelled rifles. Proping the left one on his hip, he tips his hat with the other.

"I'm ready when you are."

As the group ventures beyond the relative safety of the torchlight, their darkvision allows them to see the world around them in black and white. Mewla is the only one unable to see without generating her own light source, but can smell her surroundings, knowing which direction each of her companions is. The group can see the tunnel twist before them before it begins splitting into multiple paths, some impossible to get to without climbing. An occasional patch of glowing mushrooms provides small areas of soft blue light, though most batches only illuminate a 5ft area. Other than fungus and a few sleeping bats on the ceiling, no sign of any other creatures right away.

(Everyone make Perception checks, note that anything beyond the range of your dark vision cannot be seen no matter how well you roll, but you might still hear it. If you have more than just regular vision and darkvision, please note this - I already am taking Mewla's Scent into account for her perception and she will be given information accordingly, but if you have LLV than the mushrooms spread light to their space and all spaces around them as well as low light)

As Aladar's galive covers itself in flames, he creates light around himself like a torch, bathing the area within 20ft of him in bright light, and dim light extending another 20ft beyond that. Anyone within 20ft of him no longer benefits from their stealth roll unless they have cover or concealment. The dim light just reaches the walls on either side and the ceiling above him is just visible within the bright light. Ahead the runnel splits three ways; one path leading straight ahead but the tunnel reducing to half it's current size, another tunnel branching to the left and curving up at a steep angle, and the third tunnel goes to the right and seems to widen into a large cavern. Natural stone pillars have formed in these tunnels and the sound of dripping water can be heard by everyone. The light does not reveal anything new, but those of you with darkvision now notice that there are a few patches of mushrooms that do NOT glow in the dark, though you can only make out their shapes in the dark; 2 large toadstools the size of a dwarf on opposite walls of the cave, with smaller mushrooms growing from a bed of roots. Most fo you are able to remember information about these fungi. The violet fungus is a predator, attacking anything that comes to close, or actively hunting if food is rare. Its tendrils which it sits upon let it crawl along slowly, and the tentacles hidden in the fissures of its pointed cap lash out, hitting up to 10ft away. The tendrils are coated in a corrosive poison that rots flesh on contact. Shriekers themselves are not dangerous, but getting too close to them causes them to let out a loud wail, making it impossible for those near it to hear anything else while it shrieks. It's a passive fungus, typically feeding off things killed by Violet fungi or other underdark predators.

If the group moves straight through to the middle tunnel and Aladar extinguishes his flames you'll be able to avoid setting off the plants. The group can also go to the right tunnel if they hug the left side of that entrance, though Koma and his mount would need to move along the ceiling there to avoid the fungi, as there are no bats at the entrance to the right tunnel. The left tunnel is impossible to get through without disturbing the bats or disrupting the fungus.

Everyone in the group except Mewla has heard of vegepygmys before, small plant creatures with a humanoid appearance. They are born from the bodies of those killed by russet mold, and are a result of experiments by drow to create sentient fungus to harvest for food. The vegepygmys rebelled, and the cleansing by the drow escalated as they underestimated how quickly the vegepygmy numbers grew. They form colonies, exposing humanoids to russet mold to make more vegepygmys, and have formed rudimentary social structures. To date they haven't communicated with other races, but are kniwn to thump their chests and tap their weapons and tools to 'speak' with each other. They are passive creatures, only ever showing aggressive hostility to the drow that once enslaved them.

Luminescent mushrooms line the doorway, glowing a soft blue. After a few moments of nothing three small green humanoids step out through the doorway. Their heads have distinct mushroom caps, eye spots on their faces glow bright yellow, with small slits where nostrils and mouth would be. They lack ears, and their lumbs are short, their legs ending in fungal stumps. Two wield crude spears, the third wielding a femur bone like a club. The vegepygmy 'spoke' amongst themselves for a minute, when the hide door was pulled aside and four more of the creatures arrived, their weapons looked in slightly better condition and two of them even wore random leather pieces as a form of armor. One more appears, this one seemed different from the others. For one it was a good 6 inches taller than any of the others, its eyes glowed brightly and the cap had points on it that resembled a crown. It wore bones sewn together to form a crude armor, and wielded a steel rod with a skull on the end, small metal spikes protruding out. Most noticeable is it's flesh seems to have russet mold infecting it directly. There is a moment of the vegepygmy 'talking with themselves, until the largest actually speaks, it's mouth actually moving. It speaks in a deep bass tone and uses Undercommon.

"Are the clans still in conflict with the Drow?" She asked.

The mention of the Drow sends a shiver up the large (relatively) vegepygmy, a small cloud of spores visibly rising from its flesh around it. The others seem agitated by this but a thump of its chest quiets the guard.

The Drow seek to wipe us out, but we resist. We will continue to spread, gather more creatures to join us and soon we will rise back up against them. You can join us now. Can always use more.

"Get ready to shoot and run. I think I have a plan."

She turned back to face the apparent vegepygmy chief. "I will leave you a gift to use against the Drow if you left us go." She said in Uncommon.

The group reaches the entrance to this cavern complex and those with darkvision can tell, it's BIG. Those whose darkvision extends 60ft cannot see where the ceiling stops and the walls move outward before going beyond your vision. Edge can see twice as far but even he cannot see the back walls. The area just before you has several stalagmites and stalactites, limiting the paths to take. The cave entrance is 15ft wide where you stand and the walls move further apart, up to 60ft wide at the edge of most of your darkvision (except the Drow who sees that the walls widen to be as far as 100ft apart). But just 40ft ahead is where things get interesting as an underground lake is visible. Darkvision makes it difficult to gauge how deep it gets form where the group is standing. Mushrooms litter the walls, paths forming through them from underground creatures traveling about. Most are harmless and several glow soft blues and greens, providing low light for even Mewla to see at least some of the cavern. The ceiling quickly rises to be over 50ft high, and there are signs of climbing points leading to tunnels up along the walls and ceiling.

A young Eleengrava sat by a cooking fire with the common Drow, the males not selected for Noble breeding and the females who had no Noble blood. One of the adult males, Vos, was telling a story with animated gestures. They all shared some an Underdark Chocolate bar someone had stolen.

"The Roper is a dangerous creature in the Underdark. It is silent, sneaky, and blends in with the caves, but it will usually try to weaken you before eating you. If you tell it a story, it might let you live long enough for it to get hungrier and eat you without savoring you." Vos laughed.

"Why can't you just run away from it?" One of the young Drow children asked.

"It's got long tentacles that can reach out and sap your strength." Vos explained.

"Then how do you kill it?" An adult asked.

"You don't..." Vos replied. "There are somethings in the Underdark you don't go looking for. The roper is one of them. It finds you. If you can, poison it and run."

Edge Goodnight looked back at this memory and wondered why she didn't listen. Has living on the surface clouded her survival senses?

Edge tried to mumble in her unconscious haze, but had not the strength.

Globbers bombs engulf the roper in flames. It lets out a horrible sound and falls backwards, landing partially in the water. Its body twitches and spasms as the flames burn away it's flesh, and a loud popping is heard as the beast's eye is cooked and bursts. The Roper's body finally goes still, the flames dieing down, a rancid stench in the air now from the Roper's cooked flesh.

Aladar is in no mood to take chances. He intends on being thorough. He advances on the roper and then, when he gets close enough, strikes it several times, activating the flames on his weapon to make doubly sure it is dead.(provided its not playing possum)

Aladar grunts and shoulders his weapon before he eyes the beast. "Its a bit charred... but we could probably take the main body back and leave the tentacles behind. Should be a good deal of meat." He remarks, looking over at the others.

Mewla blanches in disgust, "Roper meat? This things smells horrible burnt. I can't imagine cooking it will make it any better. Aladar, you'll have to sleep it off to get your strength back. I have to take care of Edge." Mewla begins praying to her goddess, her hands glow, specifically from her palms as she reaches down and touches Edge on the waist and shoulder. The light washes over Edge, revitalizing her.

(Edge is healed 130 hp, all ability damage is removed, and all negative effects are removed - including unconsciousness, fatigue, confusion, paralysis, etc)

With her strength come back to her, Edge rose up with a gasp and a hidden dagger in her hand. She quickly scanned the area and evaluated the situation. She looked into Mewla's eyes that were not even seeing anything in the darkness.

"Thank you." She said softly.

Edge sheathed her dagger back into her wrist sheath and found her Sword of Subtly on the floor.

"Char cooked roper. I don't think even an Orc would eat that." She snickered. "Now let's see if Mister Roper had anything good."

Koma notices something in onebof the wounds leading to what appears to be the Roper's stomach. Digging in the contents, the gunslinger pulls out three corpses wearing adventuring gear.

"Well, we've saved these men from becoming roper excrement, but I think they are beyond even Mewla's capabilities. See if any of their gear is salvageable, then we'll bury them properly. " Koma begins inspection of the corpses.

Edge looked to Globber. "Think you could collect some Roper Venom? It might come in handy." She asked

She then looked over to Koma. "Anything interesting?"

Koma looks to Edge, "there are several salvageable bits here. I suggest finding an arcanist when we get back." He then begins refilling a sack and putting everything in various pouches along his saddle.

Some of you recall rumors that several of the young adventurers in the training group you were a part of vanished into the underdark during the last month of training. When Koma pulls back on the bow, the string barely budges, he's not strong enough to use it.

Koma loads the bodies up across his mount, and begins walking along side it. "I believe these unfortunates may be the bonded initiates from last season's class. The ones who went missing before they could be dispatched."

Aladar smirks at Koma's pitiful pull on the bowstring, gesturing him to pass it over so he can get a look at it.
"Give me a look at that." He says before he wrinkles his nose and waves distastefully at the corpses.

"Be better to leave those or burn 'em. Better a mystery disappearance than a report of being carrion for monsters. Less stench and bother for us since we wont 'ave to let the masters know, and a shred more dignity for 'em."

He arches a brow slightly as he is hit by an afterthought before he glances back at Edge. "I thought your kin favored crossbows?"

Hearing Aladar's sentiment, Koma looks to Mewla. "What would you have us do with them?"

EdgeGrinder

"If we turn the corpses in we won't have to bury them ourselves. Besides, the Roper isn'r just any monster. It's strong and intelligent. Had there been less of our numbers, we'd have suffered the same fate." Edge argued.

"So for crossbows. Yes, the Drow prefer them, but I find them clunky." She explained. As soon as Globber was done bottling the venom, they would set to return to the Fortress.

Mewla looked over the bodies, remembering who they were and her hands glowing as she checks on their spiritual state. "Their spirits have moved on, they are at rest now. We should return the bodies to the Grand Dragons. We can get the items examined then as well. I just wish to be gone from these tunnels. They reek now of rot and death."

Globber is only able to gather a single vile of the substance that coated the Roper's strands. The strands themselves were made almost completely of the substance surrounding a thin tendril, but the flames burned away most of it and the rest seemed to evaporate upon the roper's death. There is only the one vial's worth that can be salvaged, even with Globbers expertise.
