My local zoo has a couple of porcupines named Elan and Nale. Really. Yes, really. Photo to prove it:

And yes, they had a porcupette (a baby porcupine) on June 4. The extra s on the sign is a typo.

Someone at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a fan...

On the one hand, its cool to see stuff like this, where the OOTS is tribute to. On the other hand, the thought of "Elan and Nale" having a baby squick's me out a bit.

I believe that this character (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kam_Nale) was created 4 years older than Order of the Stick.

Still a fair chance that Elan and Nale were not inspirated by this character but were an inspiration for the names of these two percupines.

Do note that the other porcupine is called Elans.

As I said, it's a typo. Every other bit of info said Elan, including the press release (http://www.cmzoo.org/aboutZoo/pressBox/waterholeA1-6-2014.asp):

Our porcupines in Rocky Mountain Wild, Nale (nah’-lay) and Elan (ee’- lan), became second-time parents on June 4, 2014. Their porcupette, or baby porcupine, was born weighing a little over a pound, and veterinary staff said we’ll all have to be patient about finding out the gender.

Oh course, reading that, it seems Nale is not pronounced nail, like in the strip. Oh well, I still thought it was cool.

This has been mentioned a couple of times on the board in the last couple of years. No one has yet figured out if it is a tribute or a coincidence.

I guess no one has bothered to ask the people at the zoo. :smalltongue:

Them having a little bundle of joy is a new development, however, so thanks for the update.

Yes, when I first saw the title of this thread I was a little squicked out too. If it's a tribute, that's very cool to see, and if it's a coincidence then that is interesting.

Well, don't I feel stupid? I'll be sure to ask the next time I'm there.

Yes, ask them so that our Forumite Curiosity shall be appeased!

Also, ask if Nale has physically harmed Elan yet (or vice versa, if they were misnamed.)

Well, if PorcuNale is male (doesn't rhyme, sadly), he placed a baby porcupine inside Elan's privates [edit: twice]. Does that count?

Congratulations, I can't remember the last time a comment has made me cringe so hard.

While I get the joke, it falls flat for me because of the messed-up biology. Reproduction does not involve an already-formed embryo coming out of the male's penis.

I think he meant more along the lines of "placed what would become a baby porcupine", not an already formed one.

That's not actually any more accurate.

Fetus comes from male, female solely provides environment for it to grow in=Bad, obsolete science.

So Nale and Elan are OOTS versions of Lannisters :smalltongue:?
I don't know if I have to spoil this but "Joffrey's parents are siblings" is the new Star Wars "Vader is Luke's Father" now.

I'm never going to think of porcupine reproduction the same way again...
