View Full Version : Rules Q&A Necklace of Fireballs question.
So, this item from the Dungeon Master Guide, page 263, that allows its wearer to somehow throw fireballs, but I don't really understand how this works. I see that it is supposed to be hurled at some distance, so it needs an attack roll (for thrown weapons: BAB + Dex)? Or it is just thrown up to the distance that the item states (70 ft) and affects the area where it lands (to a distance up to 70 ft.

It does exactly what it says on the tin. You can throw one up to 70' ft ( no attack roll needed). It detonates and the results are calculated once it reaches the desired detonation distance.

Okay, thanks.
EDIT: Also, if used within 30 ft, and against a flat-footed enemy, a sneak attack would apply?

Sneak attack would not apply. Sneak attack applies to weaponlike spells, which require an attack roll, but not any other spells.

No. Sneak attack requires a weapon-like spell. Weapon-like spells require an attack roll, such as scorching ray. Fireball doesn't require an attack roll so it can't be used to deliver SA damage. See here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040309a) for more details about SA.
Edit: Also, there is nifty Simple Q&A thread stickied at the top of this forum for these types of questions.
