I'm in a D&D 3.5 campaign where personal wands play a big role (think Harry Potter influences). Since my wizard is in deep trouble if his wand is stolen/disarmed, I was wondering if anyone knows of a spell, magic item, etc. which allows you to summon an item back to you, ideally even if it is attended. In case it matters, the wands also count as "weapons".

Failing that, any suggestions for ways to locate an object, at distances beyond Locate Object, perhaps even eventually on another plane? The campaign is still only at 6th level, and advancing slowly, so I'm looking for lowish level solutions. I would be surprised if we ever get into a situation where we can toss wishes around, summon Solars to find things for us, etc.

First thought is the Lesser Crystal of Return, from Magic Item Compendium. Allows you to return your weapon to your hand as a move action, if it's within 30 feet and unattended. 1000 gp.

Can you make your wand play music?

Well, if you want to summon a specific weapon, you can use the psionic warrior soulbound weapon ACF found in this mind's eye (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20070214a) article. It lets you summon a specific weapon with the use of the call weaponry power, but requires a 2 level investment.

That's the only way I can think of to summon a specific item that's being attended.

For the second option, you're looking at fairly high level magic. Instant Summons (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/instantSummons.htm) does pretty much exactly what you want there. If you make your wand an intelligent item, it technically counts as a creature and you could use circle dance (http://dndtools.eu/spells/spell-compendium--86/circle-dance--4020/) to locate it.

If it is a 'weapon', enchant it as a +1 weapon and put the 'calling' quality on it.

If it is a 'weapon', have it be called forth (and put back) from an 'arming ring'.

Carry a bow, put multiple wand chambers in it, then put the 'calling' quality on it.

Obtain a 'bracer of wands' from Dragon 291... each bracer fits three wands and the wands don't have to be drawn to be used.

Nice ideas, thanks. I can't make it play music, unfortunately, and I can't find the "calling" weapon ability anywhere?

In looking for info on that, I stumbled on the "Casting Glove" from the MIC, which might also do what I want, though it is rather expensive at 20,000 GP. It acts like a Glove of Storing, but allows you to use a stored item once/round while it is still stored. I think the price for doing that is not unreasonable, but we are in a rather low magic item game (made up for by being wizards).

Sorry, slightly misremembered that one. It's 'called' from the Magic Item Compendium, and now that I'm back with the book it's only for armor and shields. So, you could put a wand chamber in a shield and use it that way (since shields can be used as weapons). It would bring the shield/wand combo to you from anywhere on the same plane.

I guess it wouldn't work on the bow though.
