1st Day of Nevernus, X302 ACM (After the Cosmic Mandate)

The world of Raeus is a vast world, and from all corners of creation rumors have been rushing around. Some in the West are saying that the Alaen Remnant has been mobilizing its military, and many believe they may try to retake the lands held by the Forest Consortium; however the more cynical mortals believe Alaen's ambitions are on a much larger scale.

There are more rumors that a small war has erupted in Altanara between the government and a rebel faction who claim to be led by a prophet of Luxus Sol. Of course it is obvious that Hydra is the one ordering the government to crack down on the rebellious zealots, but nobody is sure why.

Even darker rumors have come to shore, saying that some believe the Tear is growing larger, and those who believe these rumors fear what this omen signals.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However none of this concerns you, although you do take note of it, as you have just arrived in Sciath, one of the northern most fortress-cities in the United Kingdoms Coalition. While you all have different reasons for coming to Sciath, upon your arrival a courier approached you and gave you a letter addressed to you, asking for your presence in her ladyship's court, Lady Athena, the ruler of Sciath. The letter piqued your interest, suspicious how she knew you would be arriving in her city, and what she could want with you.

Nevertheless, you stand before her now in her court. She appears to be a young looking elf with pale golden hair and eyes of the deepest amber. However when it comes to elves, looks can be deceiving, and what may look like thirty is often much older than such looks would suggest. She sits before you, clothed in a magnificent purple robe adored with ancient runes along the edges as well as a necklace of a three-sided star, along with a silver circlet of stars. By her sides are two knights armed in heavy grey full-plate, wielding elaborate spears by their sides.

The throne room itself sports many tapestries, some of which you recognize as depictions of ancient myths of heroes and villains from the Second Age. Right behind the throne, which in itself is a plain silver throne cloaked in red velvet, is a spectacular stained-glass window which creates the effect of Lady Athena having wings and a halo when she is seated on the throne.

After giving you an intense look, as if studying you, she says; her voice having a slow, deliberate quality to it, as if her every word was important,"I am sure you are wondering how I knew you would be coming here and why I've gathered you yes? Well for the first one I will only say that I have my ways and you need not fear me or for your privacy. As for why I have summoned you to my court, I sensed great arcane power or other such skills in you and am in need of your services. You are at liberty to leave now if you wish, but know that if you fulfill my request you shall be richly rewarded."

The Court

It had been many a year since Haldavar had been summoned by anyone. He was never one to take orders, really, but these strange circumstances had driven him to seek out this Sciathian Lady. The wanderer had been in town to pick up a small bit of food he had ordered earlier that day. He frequently went from town to town, sleeping on the outskirts of society, living his life on the borders between civilization and wilderness. It suited him. The animals gave him no strange looks at the site of him. And so, when the courier approached the hermit-like man, he was allured. His dark crimson cloak and hood had been drawn, covering his face completely. How could this boy have known who he was? And how could he have been sent for? The name of Haldavar the Great had been blurred out by time, and most believed the wizard dead. This Lady Athena appeared to know more about him than he was strictly comfortable with her knowing... So, with a suspicious and paranoid mind, the shadowy figure began to limp his way up towards her court.

He'll be one of the first assembled there.

The others will see a frail man in the center of the large room, and clad in what appears to be a cross between a robe and an armored coat. It's dyed red, and surprisingly detailed patterns of thread meant to resemble fire stitch the thing together. However, that's all that there is to be found interesting regarding his clothing. The interesting features happen to be several wands of varying size and shape strapped into his belt, with a bandolier of vials and potions strapped to his front. A long crimson hood, dark as dried blood, covers his face, and next to nothing is visible save for the end of what appears to be a graying dark blonde beard. The figure looks about the room, his black and red staff of burnt wood held close to him. A unique and small lantern-like object appears to be bolted and built into the staff, but it's currently unlit. The mysterious figure looks to be a traveler of some sort, judging by the well-worn look of the man, and the small backpack set at his feet. He'll speak to the woman in front of him as soon as he's addressed. I do not fear you, woman. However I am most disturbed by the thought that some fool somewhere knows my location and name. I am not some mongrel pup to be so easily summoned forth here and there by little elf girls to be ordered to and fro! He sighs deeply before speaking again, his voice less harsh.

But I am... allured by your needs. Tell me, why do you require such a gathering here?

A sickly looking kobold stands out amidst the humans assembled. Partly because he is a kobold, and partly because his clothing consists of a golden circlet on his head, a pair of large gauntlets that barely fit his hands, and a loincloth. And his only possession is a bag which he does not carry, but which floats beside him. He mutters something completely incomprehensible, scowling at the elf woman.

What appears to be a female human, wrapped in a cloak, stands to the side, trying to keep out of the way. Upon closer inspection, however, she has almost a glow about her, as if she were related in some way to the nigh-inexistent gods. "I, too, would like to know what begs our attention. I don't want my... Abilities to be wasted on nothing."

At the Docks

The salt from the sea had peppered Orestes' hair with flecks of white and gray, a premature aging for the young hunter. A month at sea had turned his already dusky skin several shades darker, and left him with new muscles in his calves and shoulders. He stretched these now, bare and calloused feet repelling splinters from the old pier. Boots were a liability on the ship, and he had grown used to moving about barefoot. He was not looking forward to being shod once more.

Then came the courier, with his flimsy little slip of paper. Orestes had seen the small man asking around on the docks, but had paid him little mind. Finally he came up to Orestes, bowing his head and handing him the silly little parchment.

Orestes turned it over in his hands, one salt-stained eyebrow raised. "This is quite a seal," he said, pointing to her Ladyship's stamp on the letter. "What does it say?"

The courier seemed flustered. "It is not for me to say, sir," he said. "It is your letter."

Orestes handed it back. "Read it to me," he said. The courier hesitated. "Oh, go on, man. I never bothered to learn how." The courier looked up curiously, then blanched when he realized what Orestes was implying. "No need to look embarrassed on my behalf," Orestes said. "I can speak four languages and sing in all twenty-four major and minor keys. I just never bothered with reading, is all. There wasn't much call for pen and paper where I grew up."

The courier, stammering, read out the letter. When he was finished, Orestes laughed. "Very well," he said. "So much for spending a few days to learn the country. You can tell her Ladyship I will be there with all haste."

The Courts of Lady Athena

Orestes Cama arrives late to the Lady's court, and just catches the end of her words. He is a wiry man dressed in faded jerkin and pants, and his cloak is stained almost white with salt. On his back rests a heavy pack, as though he was recently traveling, and a well-polished shortbow of curving, dark wood. His black hair and beard are wet, as though he just dunked his head in a bucket to clean himself up, and he hums to himself under his breath.

Despite his shabbiness, he executes a perfect courtly bow, and speaks in lightly accented Elven. "<<Your Ladyship, simply being here is an honor,>>" he says. "<<I am at your service.>>"

Xelra's boots met dock as she disembarked from the ship, seemingly much to the relief of most of the crew. Her long black hair kept half of her face hidden, allowing for a single purple eye to be seen. She wore a basic set of traveling clothes over her armor, pulling up the hood of her cloak as she simply waved the crew goodbye and headed into the city.

She had received a letter in the city across the sea from this one, bearing a seal of a royal house. It had piqued her curiosity, that someone wanted her of all people in the world, for some task or another. She was absorbed in her thought, paying no mind to the uncomfortable looks she was begin given, and how much of a wide berth many of the passing city folk were giving her. She had grown accustomed to such behavior since she found out about her... unique, arcane heritage.

Approaching the gates to the castle, she showed the letter and seal to the guards, who seemed to let her in almost eagerly. She politely refused an escort to the throne room, making her own way there will little difficulty.

Pushing the double doors open, she saw she was the last to arrive. Her footfalls were muffled by the runner leading up to the throne, approaching the Elven queen and giving a bow. "Xelra Ithicus reporting, m'lady." Her voice sounded strangely husky for, by all appearances, a normal woman.

Lady Athena turns to Hladvar and says,"I was casting spells when you were still an infant, do not deign to think I am beneath you. I am ancient, and have the wisdom necessary to keep all my powers"

Upon hearing Xelra and Orestes more warm greetings, her voice softens, and she says to Orestes," <<Welcome to my city, know that my people and I do not speak in this tongue as much as our cousins do, for we are the grey elves and must share our wisdom with all.>> "

After speaking in Elven, her speech turns back to Common and she says,"Now, the reason I have gathered you all before me because there have been rumors that a warlord in Suus is preparing to attack Sciath. While we could defend against the siege, I wish to spare my people from the experience, and have decided it would be better to send a small team to investigate these claims and if they prove true... to impede or stop this warlord. Before you ask why I or my guards are not doing this, the means I used to locate you do not stretch far enough across the sea to peer into Suus, nor can I spare guards in the event that we are attacked by this Suusian warlord. Therefore I ask you to accomplish this task, and know that if you suceed you shall be paid well, whether it be in gold or some other boon."

Torrain had been seated and introduced when the others began to arrive, staying quiet and listening intently to the others as they entered and introduced themselves. Not much notice was given to her by these soon to be companions, likely due to her shimmering mithril armor, the impressive three piece quiver and the glaive giving the impression of a warrior despite her less than impressive build, the two books strapped to her pack and the Lady's words regarding great arcane power. Not to mention the complete lack of a bow probably seemed odd to any one trained in the martial arts. Nonetheless Torrain figured it'd be best to know your friends better than they know you.

Once Xelra had entered and introduced herself, Torrain turned to Athena to see how she might react to this tardiness. Perhaps she would be understanding, especially considering suspicions had already been raised as to her ability to call these people to her court. "Well lady Athena, shall we discuss the matters at hand?"

If it turns out he does, then you may dispose of him however you wish, whether it be by going in spells blazing or a more stealthy approach. However you chose to deal with him, I would like you to make an example out of him to remind others that I do NOT appreiciate anybody planning on bringing harm to the people I watch over."

When Haldavar voices his intend to not take up her offer, Lady Athena says,"Of course you are free to reject my request, but I a m surprised. Surely you of all people would look forward to helping people again rather than hiding from them?"

The wizard scoffs a bit, clutching his ornate staff tighter than earlier. He'll look over to his right to look over Xelra. He wasn't sure, but something seemed off about that one. There was a certain energy to her he hadn't felt in a long while. However, the ex-archmage doesn't bother introducing himself to her, nor to the others. Instead, he sighs deeply before looking up at Lady Athena once more, barking his response to her in her own language. " << Hah! If you were some brilliant caster and warrior, why aren't you out there leading your militia? Why aren't you on the field of battle, waiting to defend your land with blood? No... I don't believe you. You're just a politician, bribing these... fools and sell-swords to die for you! Where is your honor... >> He speaks in common once more, for all to hear. I'll serve no cowardly elf-queen, hiding up in her own palace as her people wait to die for her. I hide from no threat, but nor will I serve some ignorant pup like you.

Do you even know who I am?

He scoffs with a tone of finality before turning around and addressing the adventurers. Don't go about doing this due to the pleads of some foolish leader. There's a sense of fear about her, and I serve no incompetent hag, happy to sit on a throne her whole life. I will go and investigate myself. Not for her. But for the people who deserve to be fought for. Not this... 'ruler'. And with that, he'll spit upon the palace floor before making his way out of the palace, his red cloak flying beside him as he twirls and walks away. He'll be down the stairs leading out next turn.

Odd question indeed. Anyway as for transportation, I shall be sending you over on an unmarked ship which has been enchanted to require no crew. You shall land at the southern coast of Sons of Suus territory and from there you shall seek out a settlement called Ao'Zet, which is where my intelligence says the warlord is staying. Steps of the Palace

Aestrus will be able to follow the red wizard fairly easily. He slowed down once he'd reached about half-way down the stairs. The man doesn't seem rushed, despite the fact that he just insulted the leader of this town. I suppose he has no fear for repercussion. She'll be able to see the man a bit closer now. He appears to be wearing some incredibly ornate clothing, with small orange stitching like fire. His long cloak trails on the floor behind him, and the well-made staff stomps on the stone as he slides down the steps slowly, with the grace of a man much younger than his voice sounded. The staff seems quite interesting and recognizable, as if she'd seen it before in some book, or a poster, or something like that. The man seems familiar, for some bizarre reason. Perhaps she can't quite put her finger on it, however. As she draws closer to him, he'll turn around swiftly, his feet assuming a relaxed defensive position as he turns around to gaze at her. Hist staff is in front of him, and he appears to lean on it. Perhaps he has some kind of limp? It's hard to tell how he moves, for his robe-like coat and cloak covers most of him.

He'll look towards her for a few seconds before speaking.

What do you want? He's not angry or anything like that, but nor does he really seem the conversational type. However, he looks her up and down slowly, appearing to nod with approval from underneath the thick veil of darkness his hood provides.

By the time you return it will be made public knowledge and you shall be known as heroes of Sciath, defenders against the Suus horde! And thank you for your kind words Nurocuirgarhcha'sid, all I do I do for my people, even if others do not believe it, it is the truth within my heart."

She continues,"As for the warlord, there have been reports of him working miracles and claiming to be a scion of Mael'Ra himself, but the reports are dubious at best and is often a claim made by many warlords as their first Rhak was one favored by the Tyrant of the Flaming Depths. Xelra watched blankly as one of the more magically-inclined members of their little group stormed out. Seemingly having a problem with the queen not going on this little adventure herself. Along with someone else she didn't recognize, but also seemed to have an air of the arcane about her.

Adding in her two cents, she spoke up. "I have no objections to this task. Kings and queens of all levels gather information on each other with spies and scouts, and have done so for years. Either through magical means, or more mundane methods as we're being asked by Her Ladyship." Slipping her hands into her pockets, she addressed the queen. "A ship sounds most useful in this endevor. As for bringing this warlord back alive, I suppose if you are able to capture him you may, but I highly doubt a warlord would allow himself to come quietly or surrender so you most likely would have to kill him. She nodded her head in agreement to the payment offered, figuring that would be plenty to keep her fed and clothed for some time until her next quest. The boon would be interesting; She'd question the queen further when they return as far as how far her power extends. Being someone with an inherent link to raw arcane magic, she was curious if anything would effect her.

Once it was accepted their group would undertake this quest, she excused herself and walked after the smallest member of this little troupe. On the wall, watching silently with dark beady eyes, a gecko not native to these parts listen to everything that had been said thus far. Carefully reading the room, listening to the people, and addressing the situation. To have someone write to him was a threat in the States. It meant that they could find you at their leisure. And if they could find you, they could kill you. The political game was different here in the Kingdoms, but if she knew his name, this elf knew where he was from. She might not have known what a letter represented to him, but he had to be cautious in case she did.

Presently the lizard scampered away, looking for a place to be alone for a moment and with a pulse of magic and ripple of expanding flesh, he turned into something not quite human. A beastly creature, humanoid in appearance but savage, and dangerous looking. A second later that image disappeared as well as he used his racial power to distort his appearance. Looking much like any elf you would expect to see outside the castle, he approached the throneroom calmly.

I've heard your call. I've listened to your request. I see your mark and your prize, and I accept the contract. But, if I recall, the prize is both gold and a boon with your power. The word reasonable has no meaning without context, so it must be ignored. Kheldar licks his lips slowly, biting on his lower lip as he muses. I'll make the boon a raincheck. Once this is done and over, you'll owe me a favor and I will call upon you to help me to my own ends. The elven figure moves away from the the queen, and looks back with a smile. It's nice that you were honest about why you wanted him to die. It refreshing to kill for such a noble cause.

Moving beside the kobold, the elf matched pace with him. Need a lift little one?

That depends. What will your aid cost me, mercenary?

Kheldar laughed mirthfully. It's not struggle for me, but I can't work for free... so I suppose I'd have to charge... hmmm... two or three stories. Pausing to shift and move his body. After just a moment the elf was now an ogre. And maybe you could pay me the respects to not refer to me as mercenary. Mercenaries are hired to fight. I'm hired to kill.

The kobold nods.
My apologies. My experience is that most people prefer mercenary to assassin, at least before they are on name terms with the person they are speaking to. However, I fear I have precious few stories from my people. And I have my own transportation.
Once they are outside, the bag sets onto the ground, and he reaches in to pull out...a bag. he pulls a small token out of the second bag, puts it on the ground beneath him, and closes his eyes. Suddenly, he is mounted on a mule.

It's no problem. Thank you for apologizing. Very well. Next time perhaps. I'm sure you can find a price you prefer. The ogre's frame rumbled with a chuckle as he pressed onward to the inn he would be staying at. He wouldn't be paying of course, though. He'd find a crevice to hide in as a mouse or a cat.

I'll serve no cowardly elf-queen, hiding up in her own palace as her people wait to die for her. I hide from no threat, but nor will I serve some ignorant pup like you.

Do you even know who I am?

Orestes laughs at the red wizard's outburst. "It is funny," he says. "People who ask that are so rarely worth knowing."

Looking at the wizard as he strides out, Orestes arches one eyebrow. "Well, that was certainly dramatic," he says. He turns back to Lady Athena. "You were saying?"

"As for your reward upon your return you shall be given 10,000 gold as a reward as well as any one reasonable boon which is within my power to give to you."

Orestes nods. "That is more than generous," he says. "Besides, I would relish an excuse to travel these lands, and warlords of any stripe are no friends of mine."

At the appearance of the strange shapeshifter, Orestes grows interested, sizing the newcomer up. "That's a neat trick," he says. "I knew a woman who could change shape like that, an old rime-witch in the heart of Cristallos. Fascinating woman." Turning back to Lady Athena, he performs another courtly bow. "Your Ladyship," he says, "I hate to cut this short, but I should probably go apologize to that man. He seems the cranky sort. I trust you will be able to find us if you have more to tell?" With that, he follows the others out.

"That's a mouthful, to say the least." She commented, folding her arms under her chest. "And I wasn't planning on stealing from you, Nuro. I was simply curious about you. Next to no kobolds have the kind of magical talent you seem to have, and even fewer that seem intelligent, speak Common, and apparently are given letters from royal families to embark on missions for them."

2nd Day of Nevernus, X302 ACM

Most of you simply relax in the inn during the day, surprised that nobody charged you for your stay, it seems Lady Athena has taken care of those minor expenses, even for those who scorned her.

Haldavar wakes early in the morning, leaving the inn to go find the nearest potion store he can find. Keeping his face hidden and trying to remain as inconspicuous as possible, he purchases various potions from the shopkeep and then pays for them, followed by him leaving the shop and returning to the inn.

Kheldar sends his day in the form of a cat, wracking up quite a few fish from the various sailors at the docks. His day was otherwise uneventful although at one point he had to escape the clutches of a small girl who seemed determined to adopt the "homeless kitty".

Nuro spends most of his day tracking a cat he believes to be Kheldar, however after he see's the cat begins coitus with another ally cat, Nuro begins to believe this cat is not his new friend and returns to the inn as well.

3rd Day of Nevernus, X302 ACM

Late in the morning you are all woken up by Lady Athena's voice, leaping out of bed startled, you quickly realize it is merely an arcane Sending reminding you of the location of the ship, as well as its appearance. The Sending appeared to be sent en mass to the party, as if seemed almost automated.

You all arrive at the docks as the sun is nearing its apex in the sky. There is a light breeze blowing all the sails on the ships slightly, as well as a cloudless sky which allowed the Sun to cast its magnificent rays upon the water, giving it's small waves a shimmering, gold quality.

Without too much effort you are able to locate the ship, as it is the only ship in the port flying a black flag. The ship appears expertly made, sporting fine oak planks painted black, as well as an oak mast which holds the black silk sail. The railings of have detailed runes faintly-glowing along the entire ship, glowing a faint silver.

As you step on you hear a voice saying,"Welcome to HMS Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints, a Comet class cruiser, I am your magically assisting captain, Navis. How may I assist you?" The voice appears to be coming from the wheel, however there is no person near it.

So, we will be on a ship piloted by magic, sailing under black sails. Smart. No provable connection to Lady Athena, and we are hardly reputable sources.
He steps aboard.
Greetings, Navis. Now, are you a sentient ship, or simply a mage piloting it from a distance?

Outside Lady Athena's Palace, the Night Before

Seeing Nuro and Kheldar outside, Orestes nods at them. "I'm off to find a drink and perhaps a bed. Anyone care to join me? I suspect things will be getting far busier over the next few days," he says. "Orestes Cama, by the way." He bows again, the same courtly bow he gave to Lady Athena, but the dignity of this bow is marred by the smirk across his face.

"Do any of you know that angry fellow that stormed out earlier? Is he really as important as he seems to think he is? I'd hate to have insulted anyone important," he says with a wink. "Ah, I'm sure we'll be the best of friends. But first - a drink."

He begins to sing as he walks, his voice clear and deep.

Oh, if I should be what I never shall be,
The Master or the Squire;
If you gave me the hundred from here to the sea,
Which is more than I desire,
Then all my crops should be barley and hops, and did my harvest fail,
I would sell every rood of my acres, I would, for a bellyful of ale.

The Ship

Orestes hops onto the ship with the ease of one who has recently spent many days on a ship, but at the magically assisted wheel, he seems startled. "Goodness," he says. "This is certainly an advancement from the ship I came in on." He addresses the ether near the wheel. "Navis, you say? You're a good deal too polite to be a ship's captain."

The Dockside

Haldavar is there, standing a bit out of the way. He's looking over the others, but doesn't appear to greet them much. He's more interested in quietly studying his environment. The sea smelled refreshing to him, for he spent a long time in forests and dark caves, away from the wondrous beaches he spent his childhood at in Atlantara. The creak of the vessel was nothing new to him, but it had been quite a long time since he'd been aboard a vessel as large as this. Why, the last time he was at sea had to have been a few years ago... When he made the journey from Crystallos to this land. It had been a dark and perilous journey, for the captain was inexperienced and a storm had struck. Haldavar had spent the majority of the journey lurking below deck, hiding from the might of nature's ferocity... What a journey that had been. After a few moments of quiet thought, peering over at the others as he leans upon his staff, he decides to make his way onto the vessel.

He doesn't greet the others, but takes his first few weary steps on board. Once he's arrived onto the ship, he'll move to grip the railing looking out to sea with a thick, calloused, and glove-covered hand. He'll stare out at sea for a while now, his stave in his other hand. That large red cloak of his covers most of his detailing, but it's clear the man is now armed. There's a large and wickedly curved dagger at his belt now, which what looks to be a homemade scrimshaw hilt. Who knows what that twisty looking blade was used for. He'll stand and look out to sea until approached.

Xelra was up in the morning with the rest of her odd group, having slept rather fitfully the night before. She found a quiet spot away from prying eyes to perform her morning ritual, accepting Naberius to share space in her soul for the day. With that, she headed for the docks.

Everyone else seemed to be gathered there when she arrived, sensing the strong magic emanating from the vessel. She stepped aboard, wobbling slightly on deck. She leaned against a railing and knelt down, now curious as to what kind of magic was propelling their ship.

Kheldar wore his elven skin today. As the kobold queried the voice, the shapeshifter walked aboard in search of a comfortable place to sit. Against the mainsail was a prime location, giving him vision of everything going on at the back of the vessel, and so he choose his spot there. The last two days had been as many before had been: he survived the day and was chased by children. Overall he liked children, but they tended to squeeze him tightly against them when he let them touch him, and that wasn't a pleasant experience.

He avoided the others for now, sure he'd get his fill of them while they were trapped on the boat. Instead he made a few new friends among the fishing population, and rewarded their generosity with the pleasure of getting to stroke his soft fur. Today, however, he felt the need to be a humanoid. Few creatures garnered the respect a humanoid had, but being almost human in appearance, but slightly monstrous tended to set people off. Lucky for him and for them, he could disguise his appearance at will in addition to changing his shape. So he went with his standard elven form. Master Wizard, you chose to come with us, I see. He said with a smirk in his tone, but nothing displayed on his face.

Haldavar had been lost in thought, thinking of his last voyage and staring quizzically at a few clouds gathered in the sky. That one almost looked like a thunderbolt. That wasn't a good omen. He doesn't notice Kheldar move close, and so is slightly surprised when speech is uttered so close to him. He doesn't jump or anything like that, but it completely destroys whatever thoughts he was having. Maybe that was for the best. He tended to worry about things like omens. Surprisingly superstitious for a wizard, a trait he'd picked up while living in a small fishing village in Crystallos during his exile. Haldavar turns his head lightly to the man, revealing the tiniest bit of his face before speaking. Kheldar won't be able to see much beyond his beard, which is fully visible now in the full sun. His hair appears much thinner and quite grayed to the left, while his right is much healthier looking. How odd... What little skin can be seen on the left appears strange, light blue veins visible within the tiniest patch of unhealthily pale withered skin. Only the tiniest fraction of his face is visible, and Kheldar might already feel a tiny bit uncomfortable.

He speaks.

I did. There was little point in purchasing my own vessel to take me to a location I didn't know existed. I will be partaking of this journey with you. I don't believe we met. He turns away to gaze at sea once more.

Kheldar rubbed his chin and frowned at Aestrus' demand. You didn't miss anything, that I can recall. The mission is simpler than most: go see if a warlord plans to attack our host, and if he does, kill him. But you and the wizard declined, and now are here for a pleasure cruise to see the lands of the barbaric people of the northlands.

Moving to see what the wizened old coot was gazing at, and also moving to be nearer to him, Kheldar rested his weight against the darkened wood. No, we've not met. But I believe I have heard of you. I didn't think you were a real person, though. You must have seen much of the world. It would be interesting to hear your perspectives on it. If it's not too much to ask of you. I'm sure there are some tasks I can assist you with as compensation, however. No trace of the small worry for the old man leaks into his voice. The man looks to be on death's door. It might be good to learn from him quickly, and soon, if he was going to learn from him at all.

Torrain climbed aboard the ship, it's been too long since she'd been aboard one. Having spent the last few years land bound she was beginning to wonder if she'd ever sail again. Stepping on the boat as it softly tilted in the tide. The little things.

Approaching Haldavar from behind she quietly said, "I think I know who you are, but if you are who I think you are I have to wonder why you're being pestered with some thing like this assassination attempt." she leans on the rail inhaling the salty air.

As another approached, shifted and turned to face them, leaning back with both elbows and his upper back against the railing of the vessel. No employer is entirely honest about any job. He appeared to be gazing at the sky, specifically the clouds. That is, until a large white bird comes flying right past one of the clouds, to swoop down quite low to the sea, just in time to nab a fish floating near the surface will it's abnormally long beak. As the wizard notices the thing, he'll take out a small booklet from his pocket and turn to a page hurriedly. From there, he'll write a few things down and place a checkpoint behind what seems to be a bird's name. It appears the Haldavar was some sort of bird-watcher. He watches the bird of prey fly off and away, clutching it's doomed breakfast, before sighing deeply and muttering to himself. Haven't seen one of those for ages... Once he realizes he was spoken to, he addresses Kheldar again. Pardon. Twas distracted. What were you saying?

He sighs deeply before pondering over what Kheldar said, and how to respond. As Torrain speaks, he finally responds. You've heard of me, both of you... but we've not yet met. I need no reason to get on a ship and simply sail. I'm a man of discovery, you could say. Now you... Khledar, was that your name, yes? You seek my knowledge, and you offer compensation. You managed to sneak up upon me as well, and got yourself aboard this vessel and in the favor of a ruler. Why, if I didn't know better, you're some sort of... roguish individual. An assassin of sorts, I'd say, judging by your demeanor. But that'd be an accusation quite out of place, wouldn't it? He chuckles to himself again before continuing. But, yes. Many people have heard of me at least once in their lives... However, none seem to recognize me. Sort of a double-curse of my infamy. I'll go down in the histtory books as a great man of magic, yet I'll never know the splendor of fame again. As for my perspectives on the world... there's quite a lot of it, and it'd take a long while to tell you the stories of where I've been... the wonders I've seen...

At least you know the value of knowledge. Tell me... Are you a man of knowledge? Or of brawn?

Kheldar's smile grows more apparent at the words addressed to him. Dipping his head slightly in affirmation, he speaks to clarify his agreement. I do know the value of knowledge. It can be life or death. As for my profession, I suppose assassin isn't unfair, but I can say I take pride in my work, and have no shame to say that my talents have been used to shorten the reign of tyrants more than once before. Haldavar nods a few times before continuing to speak, his raspy low voice strained. Ahh. Good then. I am a man of knowledge, yes... But I am beyond the simplicity of a choice. A decision of brawn, or knowledge, of divinity or arcane.... Sword or Bow. I am a man of power, my friend. Power is the only truth in this world. You can be the best man, a true saint among mortals... and live your life on the streets, living on rats and beetles. The twisted men usually end up on top. I'm neither twisted, nor a saint, I find. I am no opportunist, either. I respect the unwritten codes rulers make and I respect the power of a strong ruler. Perception is the only difference between a tyrant and a great king, after all. I find perception to be a very strong thing. People won't cheer for a king with a hunchback, or a crippled knight. They cheer for the pretty people... The strong, wise, charismatic people. No one cheers for the broken men... for the tyrants... for the cruel generals. But I find the tyrants tend to keep the longest reigns, do they not?

Kings die, their reign passes on. But they are forgotten. Tyrants, however... They will be remembered forever.

Who wouldn't, given the chance, desire to be remembered forever? To leave a legacy of great good is a common thing, often remembered by priests and in storybooks. But to leave a legacy of efficiency and death... Now that's a legacy that will never fade away from history. But, I talk too much. He takes a small waterskin from his belt and drinks slowly, before continuing his speech. You're a killer, correct?

One companion had been silent the entire time they were in the presence of Lady Athena. This man was like the ice plains of Crystallos: his pale eyes shone like the frozen waters, his face sat as featureless as the sheet of glittering frost, and his soul was as pure as the driven snow. However, his IQ was also as low as the temperatures in his arctic home.

Tell me... Are you a man of knowledge? Or of brawn?

"What's a brawn?" Sven asks, even though the question hadn't been directed to him. "Is it kinda like muscles? Because then I'm that one, right Rest?" He turned to the fellow Crystallos native he had become friendly with, his eyes looking for an approving smile from the smarter man. It seemed that he was adequately prepared for any part of this mission except those which required the slightest bit of explanation or social interaction. However, if anyone needed a large object moved (or removed), Sven seemed perfectly capable.

It begged the question: why had Lady Athena summoned such a pedestrian hand? This was a question that none bothered to ask, as they were all busy waxing philosophical or poetic. Sven got to work waxing the floors. Even though Lady Athena had mentioned that the boat took care of itself, Sven had always found himself the kind that liked to keep busy with the chores of the day. Also, he had gotten lost in the conversation somewhere around prestidigi...Paying no mind, Sven picked up a mop and started swabbing the decks.

Kheldar waved a finger in front of Haldavar's nose. I think your intelligence is daunting, but there are gaps to be seen already. Who wouldn't want to be remembered? Why half of the world. For many, that sort of fame is too much stress. I personally hope to never have my name besmirch a history book. I'd prefer all my deeds to be given to "an unknown party" or attributed to the network of another man. It's a tricky thing, fame. I want to get jobs, but the fewer people who know my name, the worse I am at my job. Which, yes, is usually killing. But I'm not a killer, I am a tool for those with the money to grease my joints. If they choose to pay me handsomely to paint a house, I will. They choose to send me out to kill people. They are the killers.

Torrain though speaking to Khelgar was looking entirely at the large man who seemed to be having an argument with a creation of magic, funny to think they may both come from the same source, one is simply far older than the other. Torrain scoffs, at herself of course, though this isn't quite apparent to anyone else.

Disassociate nature? Hmm... Kheldar looked as if he was truly struggling to come up with an answer when he shrugged. I suppose it's just the way I was raised. A job is a job, no matter what it entails, and if the pay is right, the contract should be accepted. Difficulty and danger to my personal being are assessed versus the gold offered. What the task actually is doesn't matter. If I don't do it, someone else will. Once someone has decided a task must be done, it will be done. If I am able, and in need of coin, it would be foolish to turn the job down, would it not? It's saying no to an opportunity for no reason. I really don't see the connection between the crime and myself. I'm the knife in the back, not the hand hold the blade.

"I can see your line of reasoning, have you ever had any teachings from the eight silent gods? As odd as it may seem, that mind set of yours is not dissimilar from those of many clergymen. They see their position or stature in the great tapestry that is the gods' creation as nothing more than a piece of something that is and will be. They simply play a part. In any case, your hand is still the one holding the dagger, literally. Which isn't that much different than the execution of inducting someone into the clergy on behalf of a silent god."

That said, Nuro moves towards the railing where half of the group is gathered
Now, I think we could all stand to introduce ourselves. I am Nurocuirgarhcha'sid. If that is too much of a mouthful for you, than you may call me Nuro.

Torrain regards the curious kobold, the only non-human member of this covert assassin cadre. With a smile she says, "Hello, Nurocuigaa....Nuro. Sorry I'm not great with names, I'm Torrain. If it's not too much to ask, what's your association with the Lady Athena? I myself had no prior acquaintance but was enthusiastic to hear from someone with that sort of political command."

Kheldar scoffed. I've not learned from them. I doubt there is much they would teach me that I would believe. I do find it interesting though that the creed of an assassin would be so similar to the teachings of clergy. I wonder how good that makes the church sound. With a dismissive flick of the wrist, he turned to nod at the kobold. And I am the assassin. You may all call me whichever name you like best, but I am commonly known as Franz je Kheldar de Corday d'Armont, or that is to say Kheldar, with some fancy words around it, due to a pedigree.

I have no association with Lady Athena beyond what you know of. I had never even heard of her until I received her message. I simply wished the rewards she spoke of.

The wizard doesn't appear to find the finger in front of his face annoying, but nor does he move to swat away the hand trailing about him. Too much effort, and it wasn't really worth it. If Kheldar wanted to be cute, that was fine. He does, however, respond to the man. More than half the world will die diseased and alone, without having changed the course of history at all. I won't be one of those people. I refuse for my life upon this world to end with nothing accomplished but legends. I was so close, once, to changing history. With the experiments my council and I performed, we could have changed warfare forever. No more would burly piles of meat lead combat, but men in robes and clad in masks to protect the lungs. Chemical warfare... If only my research had been continued, we could have unlocked the secrets of explosives. Of black powder. Of using the very diseases nature wreaks upon the world as our weapons. I could have had the power to wipe out entire cities... I could have had any woman I'd desire... I could have had anything I'd ever wanted. I would have gone down in history, my friend... as the man who changed the definition of power forever.

But it was not meant to be, clearly. It was my fault. I grew too hungry. The desire to succeed overcame my desire for caution, and for recording my work. I rushed about my laboratory often, in an adrenaline fueled haze, not even quite contemplating what I had been doing, and what I'd done. It didn't matter to me. You are not like me, my friend. You do not mind serving another, nor do you seek fame. Perhaps one day I can make up for what I lost. I believe that one day.... I will change the world. He breathes deeply and turns to look out at sea. And people will remember my name, and know my face.

Or else.

Sven

One companion had been silent the entire time they were in the presence of Lady Athena. This man was like the ice plains of Crystallos: his pale eyes shone like the frozen waters, his face sat as featureless as the sheet of glittering frost, and his soul was as pure as the driven snow. However, his IQ was also as low as the temperatures in his arctic home.

Then, Haldavar is interrupted by the large man about him. Haldavar doesn't turn to address him, enjoying his relaxing spot on the railings. ...Yes. How did... You get here?

Kheldar's face brighten up at Haldavar's words. Really? Now that is interesting! But I would have to say, isn't destroying cities a bit counter productive? If you want power, you want influence. You want people beneath you. You can't very well have any woman you want if you go about mass murdering every man, woman and child. There won't be anyone left to have. Hmm.

But if used on smaller scales, you could destroy supply lines, command and control headquarters, or even barracks of troops. I think you misunderstand how to use your own invention. Wars won't be fought by men in robes, it will be fought in the shadows. If you build a noticeable army, someone will off them all with a well placed disease bomb... thing. So in order to have any power, it would have to be done less tangibly. Hmm... but whose to say such an invention won't lead it widespread use? You could wipe us all off the map. Plus, there is always the threat that the Gods wil see this as a breach of their mandate... and kill us all. It would destabilize any centrality of power. If you built a city and someone didn't like it, they'd be able to kill you all. If you built an army to try to defeat someone, they'd easily wipe it out. If you built yourself a nice school for wizards, someone without the talent could grow jealous and Kheldar made an exaggerated motion, all dead.

Kheldar tapped his lips with his finger as he thought. No, I'm afraid nothing good will come of that power. Not unless you really controlled it. Unless only you knew how it worked. But then what would your legacy be? In the ripe old age of however old you are when you finish your work, you briefly took over the world by threatening to destroy it, but then later died of old age, or an assassin's knife? Some legacy. You'd be hated, and villianized. People would only remember you well enough to use your name as a curse. So you're rather stuck. Even if you do finish your work, the only options you have to use it will lead to disaster or disgrace. With a scoff, he looked out at the sea with a frown. Why is it that so many people search so hard for way to kill people, anyways? People are fragile. It's not really that hard to end a life. Why don't people spend more time trying to save people? If you could invent a way to use magic to heal wounds like they say happened in the old times, then you would be famous for something other than death. Your legacy would be one of great pride to your people. I suppose you would have less of the power you wish, though. But, your name would be remembered. Your face would be plastered in every textbook of magic from now until the end times.

With a huff, he changed the subject. How can anyone know your face, though, when you hide it so well? I'm not sure what you look like exactly, and I'm not three feet from you.

Haldaver prepares a counter-speech for a few seconds, as he listens to his new friend talk. I would have had women. And people to love and shower me with praise. But my chance for that faded away the day my experiment failed, and my research was made public. I was stripped of all titles, as were those in my council who survived... The chance of going down in history as a loved contribution to the world is very slim now, for no matter what I do.. there are those who will bring up my past. There is no hope for that now. I can never be loved by the people, my friend, due to what I am. But I can certainly be feared. People find the strange and unusual frightening. Almost everywhere I go, I'm met with cries of horror from children, and such hatred from men around me. Fools all of them... That they do not know who they mock. I never strike them, though, despite their cruelty. There's no point in doing so. Killing one man won't change the world. Whether that man was a great king or a tyrant.

There's always another tyrant there to take the place of the other. Such is the nature of power, and of the darker side of ambition. Like the mythical hydra, should you cut one head off, another will grow. I don't think I'd make much of a general, but should I ever desire to continue my research, the weapons I could create would be incredibly valuable. I'd win land, and titles... all at the expense of a single bit of power that I could sell. But nor do I really think the power I was working with was meant to be. Even fate was against me that day, and I shudder to think where the world would be now had my shieldscorch experiments created. The age of fire would have begun... Of death and ash. Nations would empty their treasuries to witness the total annihilation of their enemies at the hands of mass produces potions of shieldscorch! And I would live my life in luxury. Perhaps on an island.... That is what could await me now. So what if the people thought me evil and cursed my name... I would have become death! The destroyer of worlds! But they would remember my greatness... Terrible maybe, but I'd be remembered for the work I put into my magic, this perfect science of mixtures and alchemical formulas.

This is not a good world, my friend. And I have seen how cruel the human being can be in the lowest places of the world. People will steal, and bribe, and kill, and rape... All because of their own personal desires, or under the order of rulers. Rulers like this Lady Athena. I wonder how many men under her command have razed and burnt homes, stealing and raping what they could as they continued on the warpath. That is the nature of war, and of command. There is no good in war. None at all. There are no heroes, nor righteous crusaders. When you have seen as much as I have... you know the world to be a terrible place. It could be so much better... I would do well as a leader, and with my wise rulership... There would be no darkness. There would be great cities of magic! Of splendor! Of might. This world could be so much better, even at the expense of lives. The lives of men are worth a greater idea, don't you think? Make men martyrs, and in a fiery haze of magical destruction, a cleansing of sorts would occur. Killing off a culture to build a better one from the ashes... to make a better world for the few people that stand alive... The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true.

Tell me, my friend. Are you an optimist, or a pessimist? He chuckles darkly. There is no right answer, only wrong answers.

As for my face... Tis better it remains hidden. My experiments cost me dearly...

After a long moment, Kheldar had still said nothing. I don't know what I am. But I can change. Things can change. If you can make the world a better place by killing half of it, I would support it. I'm just not sure I know that mortal men are capable of living in peace. I've come to think the same conclusions as you. Any time there should be peace, mortals find some difference that makes them hate another. But... I've not yet lost my hope. I have little faith, but still some hope.

Orestes looks as though he is going to stop Sven from cleaning the decks, but then shrugs helplessly. "Yes, Sven, I'd say you're a brawn," he says, and moves to help him scrub. "Nothing to be ashamed of, though...Don't worry about it, Sven," he says. "Navis didn't mean anything by it. He's just trying to be a bit more like our last captain."

"Why would anyone be ashamed of being strong?" Sven wonders aloud. At the insistence of Navis, he stops with his mopping. The irony of a self-cleaning ship having mops on deck was lost on Sven. Instead, his attention is diverted by Orestes' explanation.

"Oh yeah, remember him?" the man who looked half-frost-giant waxed nostalgic. "He had that salt and pepper beard on account of he was kinda old. And he was mean, but kind of in a funny way. Is that what Navis is doing? Being mean-funny?" The two men listen to the lengthy conversation between the mages, at which Sven simply scratches his head. The list continues, delving farther and farther into mundane things that Sven could exert force against.

"I'm Sven. You sure know a lot of big words, you know that?"

Sven sits and listens to the lengthy exchange between the two more philosophical men. While someone with more schooling would start to hear traces of utilitarianism coming from the assassin and anomie from the wizard, Sven just hears an awful lot of sadness. "That's sad. Instead of helping people for money or hurting people to help yourself, why not just do the right thing and help other people?" "Curious, I think there's more to be seen with that one." Torrain paused a moment, watching the clouds coalesce casually without order. "A marvelous act of nature I'd say. As for you, there's a lot to be learned from you, but an equal amount to be warned against." Haldavar wasn't looking but Torrain was boring into him with her dark green eyes.

With a loud pop of her neck she turned to address Nuro, "And I believe you and I are here under similar pretenses. I can't see my value as an assassin for Sciath, I'm a student of the world, what little lessons could be learned from assisting a nation with national security I just overheard from this one." Torrain nodded her head towards Haldavar, "Do you have anything to learn from this exposé, Nuro?"

Under Nevernus morning the water

Aestrus looks over to the sorrow figure at the edge of the deck. "Wonder what's got him all down. Anyways, I'm particularly hungry, too. In fact, I'm always hungry!" Aestrus turns to follow Kheldar, licking her lips on the way.

Orestes gives a comforting pat to Sven's back. "You're a credit to us all, Sven," he says. "If the whole world thought as you did, missions such as this one would be as useless as boots on a snake." Then he stretches, and pats his belly. "If I were a better man, perhaps I would share your austerity. Ah, well. You're good enough for the both of us, I reckon. Kheldar, is it? I'll join you for a meal."

Xelra looked up from her journal, seeing a number of the group heading to the mess hall. She was largely just listening to them and watching them interact with one another.

So far, the red wizard sounded very long-winded and talky. The more visibly armed out of all of them seemed nice and had a good singing voice. The other spellcasting female in their group seemed as wordy as the red wizard but seemed a bit more succinct at least. One of their group that seemed to have a constantly changing magic aura sounded quite intelligent as well. Another of their group appeared to have an almost otherworldly air to him, and also appeared quite well armed and had a seemingly destructive magic aura to him. And, of course, the curious kobold.

She had written something in her hook as they were all talking, eventually putting it away in a secure part of her bag along with her writing implements. Closing her eyes and letting the gentle rocking of the ship lull her into a nap.

Khelder put one arm around each of those who would share his meal with him. Fantastic! I have meal-mates after all! I hope they have something besides fish and bugs... I'm dreadfully tired of fish and bugs. Maybe a good cut of lamb, or some tasty potatoes. With gusto, he walked merrily to the below decks, hoping the path to the food was evident.

Those who wish to eat go downstairs, directed by Navis, and come to the dinning room. It is a very spartan room, consisting only of a brown circular table and what appears to be an orb affixed to the ceiling enchanted with Light. The table has nine chairs around it, and each one has a plate and goblet in front of the chair.

Off to the side of the room is a pantry which holds the water, wine, and food for the meal. In the pantry there are many different things to eat, ranging from dried strips of beef to oranges.

"I hope your meal is a pleasant one my masters," says Navis as those who came down enter the dinning room.

Kheldar moves to no longer be touching his comrades at the sight of such a bounty of food. Oranges?! I love oranges! And apples, and grapes, and ... whatever that is! Oh, and there is the lamb! Moving swiftly, he grabs a plate from the table and loads it up with fruits and meats. Navis, can you cook potatoes? Or I can eat them raw. But mashed potatoes are better. With cream! And broccoli! Oh.. never mind, I have plenty of food already.

I'd guess Kheldar eats twice as much as the average changeling, due to his ability to shapeshift as much as he does needing a higher metabolic rate. But Fey eat ~1/4 to ~1/16th as much food as mortals. But he is only part fey. I'd go ahead and guess he eats an average amount of food then.

So, three oranges, two apples, 3 dozen grapes and 1lb of meat seems reasonable. If he is partially fey, he probably prefers fruit over all else. But shapechangers I imagine would want a lot of protein for all the muscle re-configuration they have. Plus he has a base STR of 14, so he is pretty strong.

Torrain nods as she engages the lock on the chest. As she's considering her glaive she over hears her fellow travelers coming below decks. She watches as they filter into what appears to be the galley. Instead of joining them at the moment she unclasps one of her spellbooks, retrieves her ink and pen and begins penning notes. Eavesdropping on the conversation in the next room.

Kheldar looked downward at the sea. How fast are we moving, Navis?

Haldavar shrugs a bit. Hardly an unusual thing. Most people don't know who they are, nor how the want to be remembered. Most people only think of what they're doing right now. They think of their farming, or their blacksmithing, or even their spellwork. I think of myself as a bit of a long-term planner. I think ahead! I know who I am, and what I am, and what I am capable of. I know my limits, and I know my values. I know myself well. There's much to be said about a man who truly knows himself. There's power in that knowledge. "Scientia Potentia Est," and all that. As for the nature of people, well... That's something no man can truly know. People hate much easier than they love, though both hatred and love are emotions not strictly required in life. I don't often allow myself to feel hatred, nor love, nor anything really. My time... abroad... taught me much about emotion, and about human interaction. All one truly needs is themself. Strength in yourself. Strength from your soul. Relying on others is one of the things that earned my my current place in this world. If it wasn't for... He pauses mysteriously before sighing. He doesn't continue, and it's difficult to read what he's feeling, seeing as you can't really see his face.

As Haldavar finishes is soliloquy, the whole party hears Navis say,"Oh so you hear the voice in your head telling you to kill all the mortals too Master Haldavar." it pauses,"That was a joke, my nature prevents actually bringing harm to my passengers before you start to worry.Ha-ha, ha, ha-ha-ha" It seems magical assisting captains are not known for their humor, nor for their laughter.

After the anti-climactic end of his last reply, he begins to lightly tap at his staff with a melancholy grace. Haldavar has no single point to glare at, and so decides to just shake his head. It's clear he doesn't quite find his little joke particularly entertaining. You oughtn't joke about voices in heads, my magical ferryman. A madness of the mind is a terrible thing. It... changes everything. We do not know much regarding the nature of insanity, but a colleague of mine spent many a year studying the minds of broken men. He built the first real asylum. There, he would study the poor souls infected with the horror known as madness. Some would hear voices... others would harm themselves and others. Some would even eat themselves, given the chance. The truly frightening part is that sometimes even the simplest of men carries the seed of insanity. Dormant for years, but all it would take to turn a good man to a madman would be a certain weakpoint in the man's mind.

I have seen good men be reduced to babbling lunatics after losing things the loved. I came close to that feverish madness that can grip a man and ne'er let go. But, I was stronger than that. The nature of madness is something to be feared, not something to make fun of, my captain. Captain is spat out sarcastically, before the man turns slightly to the others, a sickly smile present under his scarlet hood. Just think of all the terrible things that could happen, should a madman be enclosed in a small space with innocents... Like say, a ship, at sea. Hahah. He chuckles darkly and turns back around. He coughs a tad after his laugh, before moving to walk away past the others.

(Ooh, 18 intimidate. So, he probably just scared the crap out of the others.)

"Who, me?" Sven asks, looking around to see who else the wizard could be addressing. He looks flummoxed, as if the wizard is expecting an eloquent reply with a grand demonstration of verbosity. Sven furrows his brow and tries as hard as possible to sound smart. "Orestes and me walked here. Didn't you?" He leaves the unanswered question hanging in the air and introduces himself to the mage.

Instead of helping people for money or hurting people to help yourself, why not just do the right thing and help other people?" He had clearly just swam into the deep end--one that was full of sharks at that, and he was dripping blood into the water.

Haldavar makes his way past Kheldar, and seems to be heading below deck. However, the great big Sven stands close to the way below. The wizard pauses as Sven speaks and looks up at the much taller and wider man. Ah, yes, I did address you didn't I, good sir? Oddly enough, the usually gruff wizard seems to take a sort of liking to the big man. In truth, Sven reminded him of a laboratory assistant the bitter old wizard had once had under his employ. The assistant was named Orian, and had been a large and dull mind. Useless when it came to figuring out the secrets of magic, yes, but quite useful in inscribing what the wizard had spouted out as he was working. Orian was also quite useful when it came to delivering food and drink to the tower. Orian was one of Haldavar's best friends, though Haforth could hardly register on the red wizard's level of intelligence. Orian had been horrifically scarred during the explosion, but had survived, last time Haldavar checked. He didn't really know what happened to the big man, but there were rumors of a scarred man, seven feet tall, clad in full plate serving in various armies about the lands. Haldavar suspected that his assistant turned to war to live the rest of his days. Good for him, in Haldavar's mind. He smiles with nostalgia before finally responding to Sven. He sounds friendly, but there's that ever-present hint of darkness in his tone. This a world of sadness, my large friend. Of self-reliance. The world is a sad and dark place... But there is some good in it, some innocence. You have an air of innocence about you. It will be interesting to perceive your reaction to real battle, and real war...

There you will see the cruelty of men on display. I wonder if you're a cruel man under all that muscle and hot air. And with that, he moves below deck to eat.

"I hope your meal is a pleasant one my masters," says Navis as those who came down enter the dinning room.

Haldavar walks down the stairs slowly, his staff stomping the ground with every limped step he takes. He'll make his way to the pantry wordlessly, before taking a few things. He moves back to his seat, near the window in this room and places his gathered food on the plate. There's a piece of bread, two carrots, and an apple. Haldavar hadn't eaten in a while, and was quite hungry due to it. He places his napkin in his lap and rests against the back of his chair before slicing the bread, carrots, and the apple into smaller slices, which he will impale with his fork and begin to eat, slowly. He doesn't accept any drink found here, but instead takes a flask from his pocket and takes a long swig. He doesn't speak, instead taking the chance to relish the nostalgic feeling of the water rocking the boat, and of the sweet taste of apple and carrot. The red wizard's staff rests beside him.

"Ah, Captain Navis, watch and learn," says Orestes. "I'll cook us a meal that would make the dead gods rise again. Have I told any of you about the Winter Hag of the Ebony Lake? Of course not, I've only just met you. Oh, she was a fearsome one, with an evil eye as big as this orange. They call her kind a marzanna, and she lived deep out in the Ebony Lake of Crystallos, where only frost giants and ogres dared to tread. Winter hags are brutal creatures, and crave nothing more than the flesh of humans. She caught me hunting on the shores of her lake and locked me up in her cabin, saying she would fatten me up and cook me for her midwinter feast." As he talks, he slices potatoes and apples. He spots an onion in the larder and nods appreciatively. "I told her I could cook her a meal that would make her forget all about human flesh, if only she'd let me go." He crisps bits of salt pork in a hot pan, rendering down the fat, then removes the meat and adds in the onion to cook in the sizzling fat. "Now that was a meal worth singing about! I cooked for three days straight. I cooked great whole fish, strange eyeless creatures that swam beneath the frozen lake, charred over planks of evergreen trees. I cooked her the fresh kidneys of a newborn caribou. I dug roots and mushrooms from beneath the snow and seasoned them with juniper and sage." He adds in the potatoes and apple, and when they grow soft and crisp, adds back in the pork. "When I was done, the hag was so full and happy that she kissed me on the cheek and asked me to stay on as her personal chef. I told her I would, then snuck away when she went to sleep. Never trust a hag, I say. Here we go!"

He hefts the large skillet and begins portioning out pork, apple and potato hash to the waiting crowd.

Phew. Got a 20 on my totally untrained cooking check. It would have been embarrassing if after that little tall tale, I'd ended up cooking slop :smalltongue:

As the mess of meat, fruit and potato met his plate, it quickly disappeared into his maw. A slightly too long tongue emerged to lick his lips as Kheldar leaned back in his chair to prop his feet on the table. Delicious! Though I haven't had a cook meal in some time, I think that may have been the third best meal I ever ate! Next time you should use apricots, however. A more refined man than I've ever met since once told me that apples and pork only meet ... well now that I think of it, he was being rather rude. But I would greatly enjoy if you did a repeat performance, but with apricots. The man raved about his cook's apricot pork. Hmm... and then he died. I should have impersonated him and sampled the meal he was set to have that night... of well, we live and we learn.

[roll0] vs Haldavar's intimidation.

Haldavar's words shake Sven. Here was a man claiming to feel neither hatred nor love, but apparently so overwhelmed with hatred that he was blind to it. "Well I can imagine how you think life's so sad, 'specially if you've got no love. That's the only thing that keeps us going somedays." However, Sven sees no reaction register from Haldavar. Could it be that this man simply didn't care? The thought of someone so detached from everything--from everyone--made Sven frown. His thoughts drifted to home as he started to stare listlessly to the North. It's only Haldavar's prodding that brings him back around.

At the last words, Sven looks to the deck, as if the mage's disturbed ruminations had struck some kind of nerve. As the wizard leaves, Sven decides to distract himself by engaging in conversation with another passenger. He lumbers over to Xelra and Nuro, but keeps in mind to keep a watchful eye on Haldavar. There was no telling what that mage was capable of...he'd have to talk to Orestes about it later.

She had written something in her book as they were all talking, eventually putting it away in a secure part of her bag along with her writing implements. Closing her eyes and letting the gentle rocking of the ship lull her into a nap.

Torrain closed her spellbook, attached it to her belt with a metal clasp and stored her writing utensils back into the leather pouch at her hip. She stood, stretched and sheathed the glaive across her back and walked into the galley. Waving nonchalantly she grabbed an apple, bit it, grabbed another and some jerky with her offhand. Then she left, still waving with mouth and hands full.

Hefting the hatch leading onto deck she spotted two sets of two conversing. Lovely. she thought to herself. She strode to the bow and sat with her back against the siding, watching the water splash past her while eating.

It's unclear whether Sven doesn't notice the conversation going on between Xelra and Nuro or is just too rude to care, but every once in a while he chimes in with a pestering "Whatcha doin'?" Of course, anyone who knew Sven would know that he was unaware that such interruptions could ever be considered rude; he simply had a question that hadn't been answered. Perhaps Xelra hadn't heard him, so he decided to keep repeating the question until it was heard: "Whatcha doin'? Whatcha doin'? Whatcha doin'?"

Eventually as the night drags on, each party member succumbs to sleep and finds their rest, whether in be in the hammocks below deck or gazing at the stars above deck and falling asleep on the planks.

The rest of the journey has nothing interesting else happen that is noteworthy. Navis makes disparaging remarks about Orestes gender and intelligence, Haladvar talks more about genocide and torture, and Sven still insists on swabbing the deck despite Navis' pleas that it was unnecessary. While the party may not be best of buds yet or even trust eachother, they all seem to be more or less confident in each others abilities.

On the third night of travel you have a terrifying dream, in it a being characterized by the lack of matter is has rather than any matter (be it flesh, bone, or metal) attempts to walk towards you. This being almost appears to be a hole in the universe, as if it isn't supposed to even exist or it if was, it wasn't meant to be viewed by mortals. You wake up in cold sweat before it reaches you and are so terrified you do not sleep again that night.

7th Day of Nevernus, X302 ACM

After four long days of travel, you finally arrive in Suus waters. The weather is in stark contrast to the weather you left Sciath in, the sky is grey and lightning is flashing non-stop, as heavy rain pours relentlessly down on the coast. It takes Navis about an hour to find a suitable cove to dock in, after which he informs you that you are approximately five miles west of Ao'Zet

Once docked, the party steps off of the ship and you all see it vanish from sight although the more perceptive of you still notice ripples from where it's located. As you step off and leave the rock encircled cove, you enter grasslands which appear to be well watered, signaling this weather is not usual in this area.

Haldavar continues to sleep often during the next few days. He's resting and building up his strength for the challenges that will no doubt face him in the coming weeks. When he's awake, he's usually seen with a small spellbook of his. This book is course, covered with a dark leather cover and binding, so different from the rest of his clothing. Perhaps the book is new? When the ship docks into the cove, the red wizard will slowly make his way into the grass, frowning at the hot sun from under his hood.

Orestes passes the days chatting with Sven and the other crew members, pestering Navis and singing songs. Periodically he takes out his small shortbow and practices shooting, often aiming at spots well beyond the usual range of a shortbow.

As they arrive, he looks around. "This is new country to me," he says. "Have any of you been here before?"

He steps onto the wet grasslands, smells the ground, and feels the damp soil between his fingers. "So, east is that way," he says, pointing off to his right. "Shall we head straight to Ao'Zet? Or do we want to come up with a story for ourselves first?"

Over the few days of sailing, Xelra chatted with everyone in their little group, at the very least learning their names. Eventually giving a demonstration of what she could do by walking straight up the main mast and waiving from the main sail, standing horizontally before coming back down.

On that third night, Xelra woke up with a start. Mopping her brow and looking around the hold, where she had laid out her bedroom on a couple of crates, she forced herself to calm down. Sighing and resting her forehead on bent knees, she forced herself to calm down before going to her journal. Knowing she wouldn't be able to get any rest with the image of nonexistent creature moving towards her.

She stepped off the ship with the rest of the group, watching the ship cloak itself in the cove they docked in. Even without her ability to detect magic, she had another way to find it. At Orestes' question, she gave matter-of-fact answer. "Traveling magic entertainment troupe. Using our powers to amaze, mystify and cause wonder in young minds. When they arrive, he shakes his head to Orestes' question.
No, I have never had the pleasure of coming to this country. I think a passable story would be that we seek to join our target. Mages are usually a welcome addition to an army. And Sven is our loyal bodyguard. Aren't you Sven?

We may get pestered every so often to show some bit of prestidigitation, but I think we'll largely be given no mind."

Orestes laughs with glee. "Yes, it is only too perfect!" he exclaims. "We've got a strong man, a levitating kobold, the man of a thousand faces... Haldavar can be our oracle, always foretelling doom and destruction. And I - I can be the dashing sharpshooter." He closes one eye and mimes a trick shot with his bow.

When they arrive, he shakes his head to Orestes' question.
No, I have never had the pleasure of coming to this country. I think a passable story would be that we seek to join our target. Mages are usually a welcome addition to an army. And Sven is our loyal bodyguard. Aren't you Sven?
Oh, yes, that. Nuro has treated Sven in a manner consistent with a puppy. And is pretty clear that he is doing it to mock the large man.

His face falls. "Oh," he says. "I suppose that makes sense. It lacks a certain flash, though, don't you think?"

Kheldar scrunches up his face with disapproval. I'm not going to be a circus performer by morphing into silly animals for children. But what I will do is... basic math. Trust me, it'll wow the audience. Kheldar pops his neck and with a few more cracks, changes his form into that of a dog. With the constant wag of his new tail, Kheldar looked the part.

Torrain spent the majority of her time on board engaging the other enlisted members of their assassin party. Or relaxing on deck with the salty air and light spray.

Upon arriving Torrain was one of the last off the ship and onto shore. She chimed in regarding a plan of approach, "A traveling performance group would definitely get us where we want to go, as for acting as interested mercenaries may be a little suspicious, after all we are a large group." Torrain cracked her neck as she spoke, looking to see the general response.

Aestrus finally woke up from her slumber, as she had the last few days, a bit late. Maybe an hour or two later that everyone else. She had quite a bit of trouble sleeping on ships. Always had. Other people say the rocking motion puts them to sleep. "Don't see how they do it." she mutters as she appears above deck, just as they're discussing the plan of being a travelling performance group.
"Hm, that may work. People like flashy things, and we've got a lot of that here. Also, how'd a dog get here?"

Sven

As the crew disembarks, Sven crouches to the ground and feels the soil of the land. While he had never been to Suus, he knew how to get along just about anywhere. He feels the dirt, using his fingers to determine everything years in the wild had taught him about the land.

"Traveling magic entertainment troupe. Using our powers to amaze, mystify and cause wonder in young minds. We may get pestered every so often to show some bit of prestidigitation, but I think we'll largely be given no mind."

"You mean we get to be in the CIRCUS?!" Sven practically bellows. "My Viena loves a good circus," Sven prattles excitedly, mentioning a name that not even Orestes had heard before. The gigantic man rattles on about circuses to himself for a few moments longer before he begins loudly humming a joyous tune (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5csNO3oMrQ). "Nuro, quit your exercises! We get to be in a circus!"

"I sure am!" Sven gleefully replies, blissfully unaware of the smaller creature's sarcasm. "But maybe I could be a bodyguard for the circus too, right? Because I think the circus is a really good idea."

"Yeah, that's right, Rest," Sven nods thoughtfully. "I guess it's better for a circus to have a strongman than a bodyguard. Good idea!"

Kheldar's shapeshifting is the only thing that can take Sven's attention off of the possibility of being in the circus. At the display, the mighty warrior falls completely silent. Once the transformation is complete, the Crystallan strongman crouches down to be at eye level with the dog and quietly asks: "You just...you can...how..." He can't seem to find the words to ask, but then realizes he'd be asking them to a dog. "How'd he do that, Rest?" Sven calls over his shoulder to Orestes. This transformation has captured Sven's attention for longer than anything else has over the past four days.

Haldavar strays quite a few feet away from everyone during their discussion. It's unclear whether or not he heard the choice to assume the guise of a travelling performance group, but nor does he look like approaching the red wizard would be a particularly good idea. He looks to be gazing over the horizon and thinking slowly. The old man had... quite a lot to think about, and much to plan. He'll move to sit down upon a rock and ponder a few things. The distance and direction of the warlord's camp, for one. How many charges of disguise self he had built into one of those wands of his, and how long he imagined he could last should it come to combat with the man. Not very long, most likely. However it wouldn't take more than a few seconds alone with the mysterious enemy, would it? Hopefully not. He'll begin to slowly feed his toad familiar a bit, and start talking to it in their unique language. The toad is currently resting on his leg and ribbiting loudly, so any who watch will simply see his back to them, but hear him making weird noises.

He'll follow the party but keep his distance for now.

Kheldar barks happy, and jumps up on Sven. With a wagging tail, the large dog pushes on the big man, playfully trying to knock him down.

I wonder, what are the mechanics of a dog trying to push a person down by jumping on them? Touch attack + trip attempt? Grapple check?

"So Orestes is our Singing Sharpshooter, Nuro can be the Weightless Kobold, Sven can be the strong man/bodyguard, Khelgar can just be a smart dog, Torrain, Aestrus and myself can be the actual magic act."

Torrain considers for a moment penning in her spellbook, but nothing inspirational comes to mind. Instead she hurries to Orestes' side, "Umm... Orestes you sing well and they're always catchy, your tunes. I was wondering, do you write your songs? As the party continues to trek through the wet grasslands towards Ao'Zet, they see a pack of dogs in the distance, huddled around something the party cannot see. Of to the side of the pack is the corpose of what seems like a horse, although at this distance it is hard to tell. As the party moves closer, the pack of six dogs turns around and you can more distninctly see their features. Their noses seem to be inside their faces rather than extrude from them, their tails resemble sprials rather than a normal dog's tail, but the most outstanding feature is that their teeth and face are stained by gore.

Distracted by a new song, Orestes does not immediately notice the pack of wild dogs. When he does, he immediately drops the song and pulls out his bow, notching an arrow to the string and swiftly moving to the side.

"Wild dogs," he says. "A whole pack of them. They're coming this way. I've seen this kind before. They are like the common pug, but grown large and feral - almost primal. My apologies, Torrain - we will have to discuss composing another time."

Then his voice once again rises in song. It is a variation on the tune he was just singing earlier, but the tempo is faster, and the words more stirring. The song causes your hearts to beat quicker, your vision to sharpen. Suddenly the blood-stained muzzles of these dire pugs seem less intimidating.

Haldavar had been a bit closer to the wild dogs, and upon seeing the pack, formed a great big plan in his head. As the dastardly thought began to circulate through his mind, the wizard rushed forward, marching into combat quickly. The man moves surprisingly fast due to his decent dexterity, and as the wizard moves against the wind, his large red cloak billows behind him, obscuring his next few actions from the others. He pulls a wand from his belt, gripping the thing expertly with a gloved hand. He looks quite intimidating really to the others. He's tall, and mighty, and his staff and wand make a perfect show of wizardly might. He brings the wand down expertly, twirling it in his hands like a baton before thrusting forward with his steel and wood wand. A uniquely built thing, for sure. Perhaps the older wizard crafted it himself from materials? Hmm. He rushes forward to the dog and waves his staff and wand high, before bringing the staff down and cackling loudly, aiming to scare the dogs away from him and preserve his magic.

As the wizard moves forward, he's cackling loudly. His mad cackling will function as an intimidation tactic, so I'll roll for that , unless the DM rules the dogs aren't afraid of things like him for whatever reason.

Aestrus, seeing the dogs approaching, quickly tried to think of the best spell for the situation... They're all in a group, so a Fireball would be good, and get all of them. However, If, say, Sven goes up and gets in there, I may hit him. Well, I'll see what happens.

Almost as if Sven has a precognitive ability to read Aestrus' thoughts and do the exact thing he'd not prefer, Sven charges towards the pack of dogs. "Puppies!" the warrior calls out with glee, his voice fading as he darts away from the group towards imminent danger. Of course in this case, the danger had fur and little curly cue tails, so it seemed more like fun and cuddles to Sven. Then again, most things seemed like fun and cuddles to him. "Puppy hugs!" the party hears him shout as he pounces upon the closest animal.

Full-round action: charge the nearest puppy using Pounce!

First pounce attack: 27 vs touch AC to trip. If that hits, the pug must make a DC 14 Fort save if it is evil or take 5 DEX damage (and 1d6 more in a minute).
Opposed trip attempt: The pug must make an opposed trip attempt of more than 10 or fall prone.
Extra attack if trip is successful: 16 vs (AC-4) (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/conditionSummary.htm#prone). If that hits, the pug takes 15 damage and must make another DC 14 Fort save if it is evil or take 5 more DEX damage (and 1d6 more in a minute)
Free grapple attempt if either original or extra attack are successful: The pug must make an opposed grapple check of more than 32 or take 21 additional damage and become grappled.
Free action to let go of grapple
Second pounce attack: 10 vs touch AC (possibly lowered by DEX damage above, -4 further if prone). If that hits, the pug must make a DC 14 Fort save if it is evil or take 3 DEX damage (and 1d6 more in a minute).
Opposed trip attempt: The pug must make an opposed trip attempt of more than 27 or fall prone.
Extra attack if trip is successful: 12 vs (AC-4, possibly lowered further by DEX damage above). If that hits, the pug takes 19 damage and must make another DC 14 Fort save if it is evil or take 1 DEX damage (and 1d6 more in a minute).
Free grapple attempt if either original or extra attack are successful: The pug must make an opposed grapple check of more than 19 or take 15 additional damage.

TL;DR? Max damage potential: the pug closest to Sven takes up to 70 damage and must make up to 4 DC14 Fort Saves if it is evil vs a possible total of 14 DEX damage (and 4d6 more in a minute). The pug is possibly both prone and grappled.

As the storm continues to rage on, the first pug rushes towards the party, darting from what was 60 feet away to now only ten feet away from the party, growling at the entire party as it does so.

Following suit, the second pug rushes right behind it's packmate, arriving only ten feet away from the party, howling like a banshee as it prepares to ravage it's prey.

Nuro rises from the ground, only ten feet above, but still able to lord over the pugs and protect himself from retaliation. As he stops in the air, a spectral dragon claw swipes at the first pug, however the pug deftly dodges the attack.

Xelra glares at the first pug, her eyes glowing an otherworldly purple as her hand begins the crackle with otherworldly energy. In an instant a maddening beam rakes across the air, landing on the pug and causing it to cry out in pain. However the pug still stands and glares at the warlock.

Kheldar barks at the approaching pugs, and moves to intercept any who attempt to attack the frail wizards.

The third pug and fourth pug rush to join their companions ten feet away from the party, but cannot reach any enemy to sink it's teeth into before the party reacts to its presence.

Orestes begins unleash his melodic voice, strengthening his party and filling their spirits with resolve to fight harder through the fire and flames of combat! He sings the tale of the first King of Crystallos, who fought against the fearsome ice dragon Nezarul, and slew it in order to clear a safe area for the scattered peoples of Crystallos to create a city to defend against the frozen hordes of beast native to Crystallos.

The fifth pug rushes to join the pack nearing the party, however it too howls in frustration as it's prey reacts before it is able to bite and consume their soft flesh.

Torrain moves backwards in order to put more space between herself and the godless dogs who have the audacity to attempt to attack her! As she moves back, she fires three bolts of arcane destruction at the first three pugs who arrived near the party.

Sven appears to be overjoyed at the pugs and launches himself at the first one, attempting to make it fall under the sheer mass of his body however the pug breaks free of the large mortal's mass. Sven is determined to hug the puppy though and grabs it, squeezing it so tightly that it instantly dies, however upon attempting to trip the second pug, he misses entirely, the pug side-stepping the killer of its friend

The sixth pug is able reach Sven and attempts to attack him but misses him entirely. At the same time, Aestrus silently curses at Sven for getting in his line of fire and blasts the first pug with a intense beam of heat. The beast still is standing, however it looks as if a light wind would fell the pug.

Haldavar is the last to make a move and rushes towards the second pug, madly cackling at it, terrifying in and causing it to spend it's next action running away from the seemingly-insane man in red.

Pugs

As the pug begins to run away from the terrifying wizard, he follows the thing slowly. He spins and flips his steel and wood rod with the intention of finally using the weapon. As he fires the wand, bursts of red and yellow magic explode from the tip of the eighteen inch wand. It seems slightly longer then most wands, but much thinner. The bursts rocket towards the pug as Haldavar smiles cruelly from beneath his hood. He always looked forward to a chance like this, where he could simply observe the destruction he could cause. However, this was no battle to show the others the full extent of his wizardly powers. As the two bolts draw closer and closer to their target, they begin to turn black from the inside, and when the pair of magical blasts finally strike at the pug, the bursts will have become completely black and had begun to blur the air, as if the bolts of magic were frighteningly hot. There's a horrific sound of sizzling, and the magic will have found it's mark. The others will be able to see the intimidating wizard fire the blasts from where they are, but his cloak covers most of him. Was that positioning purposeful, or?

After the blasts meet their mark, Haldavar seems to rush forward, drawing closer and closer. Unfortunately, he trips on what seems to be a small hole in the ground in front of him. He falls and stays, his cloak covering the details of exactly what occured.

Orestes starts forward when he sees Haldavar stumble, at first thinking one of the wild dogs had gotten to him. A second look, however, reveals that the red wizard merely stumbled. Seeing that the battle is already turning, he lets his song drop to call out to the mage.

"You alright there, Merlin*?" he says with a smirk. "Careful, now - walking can be tricky. Are you injured? If so, stay down and I'll try to keep the dogs off you."

*Replace Merlin with the appropriate historical big bad magician for this setting.

Just using a free action to speak, and letting my song lapse. I'll try to target any pugs that seem to be approaching the injured mage in subsequent rounds.

The effects of inspire courage will last for another five rounds after Orestes stops singing, so unless this fight goes very long for some reason, it should last throughout the combat.

3 Haldavar

The second pug continues running away form Haldavar in terror, now thirty feet away from the party.

Nuro shouts at the third pug, and a spectral draconic hand rakes at it, leaving deep gashes in it's side as the claws disappear.

Xeldra launches at terrifying bolt of energy and as it passes one can feel that it is sheer terror given form. However for all its potency, it whizzes past by her target and hits a small colony of ants nearby, sending the colony into anarchy.

Kheldar barks at the diabolic pugs, and leaps at once of them trying to bite and claw it, however the third pug just barely avoids his attacks and glares at him as if says, "Et tu Brute?"

The third pug, while glaring at the treacherous dog who just attacked him, deigns to attack the mountain of a man and leaps at him, sinking it's teeth into his thigh, dealing 3 damage.

The fourth pug decides to join its brother in attacking the man-giant who crushed the lungs of their brother. It too enjoys success in its attack on the titan, sinking into its teeth into Sven's other leg, dealing 2 damage.

Orestes leaps back from the conflict and decides to launch his ranged assault at the fourth pug, sending two arrows into it's side, causing it to scream out in pain.

The fifth pug succumbs to social pressure and also tries to attack Sven and also succeeds! Truly the man from Crystallos is public enemy number one in the eyes of these pugs. The pug begins to gnaw on his feet, dealing 3 damage.

Torrain, shocked at seeing her ally being mauled by a pack of pugs, aims a small blue rod at the pack of pugs assaulting Sven. From the rod shoots out a bolt of lightning arcing towards the pugs currently surrounding Sven and tearing into his flesh. The third and fourth pug manage to avoid the brunt of the attack, however the fifth and sixth do not share their comrades' luck and are hit square by the bolt of Iudexa's wrath, killing the fourth pug where it stood.

Sven looks confused as to why the pugs are biting into him, but decide they just don't know how to hug properly. "Here let me teach you how to hug puppies!" He manages to make contact with the third pug but it catches it balance and manages not to trip. Just as the pug catches it balance though, Sven picks up the pug and begins to hug it so hard it collapses and the light of life leaves its eyes. As Sven feels the pug begin to cool he drops its corpse to the ground and tries to hug the fifth pug. However the fifth pug manages to avoid him, motivated to dodge more effectively as to escape the fate of his two comrades.

The sixth pug growls it the slayer of its two friends and begins to leap at Sven where the third pug once was and manages to sink it's already bloodied maw into his fresh wound, dealing 4 damage to the man with hugs of death. Aestrus's fires another ray of intense heat at the two surviving pugs near Sven and manages to kill one of them, the pug yelping in mortal agony as it dies from the sheer heat. However the sixth pug manages to evade the ray and prepares to flee, seeing that if it stays here it will die.

Haldavar follows the second pug fires two bolts of sinister energy at the fleeing pug, striking it and convincing it that its decision to flee was indeed the correct decision. However as he nears the pug, it appears as if he trips on a rock or some other hazard and falls to the ground.

The storm still rages on, and rain pelts the ground like arrows, and Haldavar rolls on the ground in agony. However the party sees a small cave up ahead which could serve as a shelter during the storm should they wish to take it.

He pauses at the sight of the oversized man hugging the limp bodies of several feral pugs. "Um, never mind," he says, making a mental note to talk to Sven later about his... enthusiasm. He nods at Torrain's suggestion of the cavern. "I'll carry him. He doesn't look that heavy." Grunting, he hoists the red wizard up and staggers. Haldavar raises his hand up to Orestes, clutching the larger man's limb and rising with the help of his staff. The older man rises with the use of his deceptively strong calf muscles as well, which is most likely what inspired the other man's comment regarding his largeness. Haldavar groans as he finally reaches his regular height, relying on Orestes's shoulder to guide him the first few feet forward. He speaks a tad, and Orestes may get a brief look at the red wizard's twisted face as a shard of lightning pierces and lightens up the quickly deteriorating skyline. Orestes won't be able to notice too much, but his face once more hints at a strange lopsided aging, or something to that likeness.Ergh... Thank you. Damned hole. I seem to have pulled a muscle, or something. Ugh... Best hurry, the rain seems cold, and lightning less than welcoming... The storm would be large, as far as Haldavar could tell. He didn't mind the rain, really, and had spent lots of his time gazing out tower windows or following his past companions through storms. Still, he wasn't as durable as he once was. We'll need to head into the cave, and rest for the night, I think. We'll need it for the long trek to come. Once he reaches a suitable distance with Orestes's assistance, he'll shrug off the larger man to rely upon his staff. I can still walk... But... I'll need some definite rest. I can take the first walk, if you like? He'll move to follow the others into the cave gingerly, his limping quite apparent even underneath the heavy drapery.

As they enter, they realize it is a rather small cave, big enough to shelter the party but not much deeper than that. Haldavar doesn't bother letting Orestes near enough to roll a check. Even if the red wizard didn't have an ulterior motive, he wouldn't have let the other man close. Haldavar despised showing weakness, and showing some other person his wounds was hardly at the top of his list of things to do before he finally keels over and dies. He'll sit near the opening of the cave and rest, growling a little warning to Orestes as he moves closer. "Don't bother. I'm fine, and I certainly don't need someone else caring for me. He'll wave Orestes and his wand away and reach into the pack he dropped by his side, to pull out a large journal. He looks down at it for a few seconds before his look changes under his hood, and his voice softens. "Thank you for helping me up, friend... But I don't need anyone's help, and never will. Relying upon others is like relying upon an old piece of rope to hoist you up a mountain. It could be faithful, and get you to your destination. Or it could let you down to fall to your death, or something equally as unpleasant. I don't need your help. Please... leave me alone. He opens his journal up and begins scribbling furiously with a feather pen, his 'wounded' leg straightened out in front of him. Should Orestes make a spot check, he'll notice that the journal seems to be his personal diary of sorts, and it appears to be his seventh edition, judging by the roman numeral on the cover. "Warlocks also carry a very negative connotation. Because we inherit out powers without need to study for years like wizards do. Many think we simply get them from pacts with demons and monsters and other such 'evil' beings. I got mine"

In fact I've prepared a spell today to grant myself the ability to see things cloaked by invisibility, it's the perfect chance to look for similarities." Torrain rummages in her pack and retrieves a sheet of paper and her second spellbook. She hands the sheet using the book as a writing pad to Xelra, and the quill as well. "Try to detail the process of bringing these magical effects into existence. I know it may seem like a fruitless effort but I am a researcher of everything and anything magical. I theorize that magical energies, once brought into being, have nigh identical means of effecting individuals." She turns away to face Nuro once again. "And how did you come into possession of your magical talents? Training? Tutelage? Self manifestation like Xelra? Would you be interested in aiding my research when there's time to do so?"

My tribe abandoned me. I needed to leave the cave to avoid starvation, but couldn't lift the burden they had bound to me. So I stopped using my body and used my mind. It worked better. As far as the shape, there are theories that my people are descended from dragons, and legends of kobolds born with wings. I guess I got the mind of a dragon, rather than the body.
He chuckles as the inquisitive girl continues her questioning.
The effects are varied, but this arm is one that needs to effort for me to maintain. Additional forces take more effort, but are not tiring to me. Spells such as the jaws that I created against the dogs, however, do tire me over time.

"I see, unlike myself your efforts are taxing when implemented. So do you have any preparation for your magic? Do you exercise your mind? Personally I try to memorize odd bits of irrelevant information to aid in my efforts to maintain my spells. How long did it take you to begin manifesting your mental projections?" Torrain seems entirely interested in the physical arm that is clearly visible, glancing back to check on Xelra rarely. "Does the arm become stronger as your mental faculties grow?"

Only some of my efforts are taxing to me. I have plenty of talents that take no particular effort beyond the focus to manifest them.
The manifestations began as soon as I opened my mind to the ability, and they grow in power as I use them. Hence my habit of exercising.
I have noticed its strength growing. Originally, it served only to lift the burden my people had placed upon me. Now, I believe I could lift Sven with only this arm.
Nuro's tone is amused. This was certainly one of the more interesting individuals he had ever met.

Sven

I'll go with you. I lived most of my life in a cave. I'm used to being in the dark.

"I should probably come along," Sven says with his best attempt at a knowing nod. "People always tell me that I'm in the dark, too," he says. If there was an irony, it would be lost on Sven. Of course, there was a chance that he didn't even know what irony was, so it's less that the irony was lost and more that it wasn't even on the map.

"Love is a dangerous thing, Sven," says Orestes. "And I suspect that your arms are far less gentle than your soul. But don't fret. Those were not good puppies. They were wild things, like those sharks we saw when we were sailing...Now, that dog, I'd be gentle with, Sven," he says. "Maybe no hugs this time."

"You're right, Rest," Sven agrees. "The hugging is really the problem. If I only knew how to be more gentle. This isn't the first time that my angry arms hurt something..." His thoughts wander, lost in the easily remembered pain of past guilt.

Kheldar watched the room with the happy, bored panting of a dog with eagerly expects someone to suddenly want to play. Noticing rope pulled out, he immediately runs over to grab one end of the rope, and takes off with it. Seeing as Orestes is playing with Haldavar, Kheldar runs to Sven and runs a quick circle around the man before fleeing from him, rope sliding around the floor at his ankles.

At first, Sven doesn't even react to the dog dragging the rope around him. When he does play along, it's a halfhearted attempt at best. He grabs the rope with one hand and holds tight despite Kheldar's strongest yanks with his snout. But he doesn't get involved with both hands, and for once Sven's trademark enthusiasm had abated. It seemed he had followed the lead of a few other party members who had decided to stare forlornly out into the rain. "Are you...in there, Kheldar? I mean, can you talk? I want to ask you something." From the look on Sven's face, it seems that whatever he wanted to ask was important to him.

"Incredible, how many arms can you manifest at once?" So what exactly was this burden?" Torrain cracked her neck as she spoke. Checking her bag to see if she had another quill handy, waiting for her's to be available was ill timed, in hindsight. So many notes to take.

The method by which you learned magic is already impressive in and of itself. I was granted this power through events in my life, even after showing no real arcane affinity before hand. The way we access our power is simply too different to draw any similarities to. While we both may use our magic to attain the same effect, the process with which we obtain that effect, is like apples and oranges."
"And as I mentioned before, I can't really demonstrate how I tap into my power, since it's always within reach and always ready to be access and manipulated. Kheldar looked around the room, then dropped the rope. Licking his lips, he hesitated a bit before finally speaking. Yes, I am in here. It's just that... dogs don't talk. I don't like to break character. The voice that came out of the dog was a few octaves deeper than Kheldar's and some of the words came out strangely. It was as if Kheldar was using the same vocal chords, but a different shaped mouth and tongue; which is exactly what was happening.

After speaking he walked forward and settled down into a laying position against the wall, away from the others. Come, sit with me Sven, and tell me about what is giving you such a troubled tone.

Sven joins Kheldar, and as they continue talking his voice drops to almost a whisper. His eyes dart around while they speak, as if he's looking to make sure that none of the others can hear them. The point about the acoustics of sitting in a small cave amplifying every sound is, much like the previous irony, lost on Sven and doesn't even bother stopping to ask for directions.

"It's just that...well, you see...I changed shapes, too. One time. Except that I couldn't control it, and it made me--" Sven's voice breaks as it catches in his throat. When he speaks again, he actually manages to whisper--almost imperceptibly so: "it made me hurt someone special to me. I didn't mean to; it just took over. It hasn't happened since, but it was so scary, Kheldar." The large man's eyes well up as he mentions his fear, and seeing such a fearless warrior on the brink of tears is unsettling. He swallows his emotion, though, and does an awful job attempting to conceal the movement that wipes the tears from his face. His voice picks back up to somewhere between a whisper and his usual bellow as he asks, "How do you control it when you change shapes, Kheldar? And is it scary?"

In my own situation it may not be useful for arcane magic but it may help me understand the older magics that no longer permeate our world. Torrain smiles at Xelra as if her reasoning was perfectly understandable and explained everything about her work. "It can't hurt to try!"

Xelra sighed in slight annoyance and decided to oblige the wizardess instead of trying to press her point. She quietly scribbled across the page while she spoke with Nuro, herself also learning about his mysterious power.
Once she was done, she tapped Torrain's shoulder and handed her the filled piece of paper.
On it was a great amount of detail describing the general process as to how Xelra shapes her power to grant her the desired effect, how the magic works in tandem with her body, where she believes she's drawing her power from, even a detailed diagram of a human eye showing where exactly she was applying her magic. Further proving why she couldn't possibly teach this craft to someone, given that the written notes imply that her magic was being applied to very sensitive bits of human.

Orestes seems slightly offended by Haldavar's refusal to be tended to, but he does not appear to dwell on it long. He shows no interest in the strange journals that he and Torrain seem to love scribbling in, and instead busies himself with gathering scraps of wood to start a fire near the cafe mouth, where the smoke will not bother the others. Once it is started, he folds his arms and watches the rain fall.

Orestes listens with half an ear to Sven and Nuro's tales. He places a comforting hand on Sven's great shoulder, having to reach up to do so. Then he goes back to staring out at the rain, humming to himself.

What happened to you, and what happened to me are different though. You are Sven, a mighty warrior who was transformed by evil magic. I am nobody, a nothing, who can take any shape I want. After standing, the dog trotted a few feet away and then his bones all popped out of their sockets, and his fur rippled violently. In a second he was a mass of fur without form, and in another second he was a behemoth gorilla. He huffed at Sven, and then snarled. Don't worry Sven. He grunted before returning to his canine form.

Walking slowly to curl into a ball in the corner of the cave, Kheldar put his head down. I won't let you hurt anyone I don't want you to. Ok? Most of what Kheldar says is ignored, as Sven seems to fixate on something Kheldar says early on. "I'm not evil," he says, hurt by the accusation. He and Kheldar continue to talk through the evening until the two eventually decide to turn in for the night. Sven tosses and turns as he tries to sleep, though. He appears to have the same destination as we do, so perhaps we will run into each other."

He hums, then breaks softly into song:

He went out walking down a street paved with mud
Lifted some stones, saw the skin and bones
Of a city without blood

An interesting group, all said. He looked forward to how life would develop with the new tribe.

As other people started to wake up, Kheldar padded over to watch them; to see what their morning rituals were. As people prepared their spells, Kheldar stared at them with big puppy eyes, wondering how distracting it would be. Overall, Kheldar just patrolled the cave, acting like a dog. He did discover, however, that his approval of the old wizard was an unpopular opinion, and kept that fact stored away somewhere safe in his mind.

When Sven started looking for the wizard, however, that gave Kheldar a chance to do something meaningful. Tracking was something dogs were good at! He put his nose to the mud and sniffed fervently.

The city of Ao'Zet does not boast the same defensive fortification that Sciath does, for it lacks the tall walls built for sieges or ballistas mounted upon them, but it is still as large a city of Sciath and you can see red tents on the far side of the city, signaling to you that perhaps the warlord and his men are not natives to the city.

However the most prominent feature of the city is the two massive bronze pillars in the center of the red tents, crowned by two large flames. It seems that is most likely where the self proclaimed "Scion of Mael'Ra" would situate himself, after all Mael'Ra is the god of fire.

As you get closer to the city, you notice guards stopping people at the gate as well as the fact that many of the tents in the military camp are either singed or still burning. You all can hear the guards saying to a group in front of you,"Have you seen the terrorist-mage Haldavar or his accomplices? We have been informed he was traveling with a group of people, two of which were named Gerat and a... hmm how do you pronounce this name? A Sen? Sev? Sven?"

Orestes perks up with excitement. "Haldavar, you say?" he asks. "You mean Haldavar the Red? I've heard of him! There's a whole song about him!"

He begins to sing:

Hear now of Haldavar, whose unholy spell
Eclipsed the moon, and shook the Hells!
Yes, hear of Haldavar with beard of snow,
With tottering footsteps, with wrinkled brow.
Oh fell Haldavar, whose wicked art
Could cloak the foulness of his lustful heart.

He looks around excitedly. "You mean Haldavar of all the songs is here? In Ao'Zet?" He looks around to his companions, nudging them. "Did you hear that, troupe? And here we thought we'd be the most exciting thing to happen to this old town. Guess we've just been shown up - the guard is saying that Haldavar the Red has been through here!"

"Yeah yeah, Haldavar, big deal he can throw fire around. Any wizard worth their salt can do that. But what's he doing in Ao'Zet? I thought he was a hermit after his accident." Torrain plays with sparks of electricity as she speaks.

"Haldavar the Red? Can't say I've ever heard of him." Xelra commented aloud, adjusting her hair slightly as she shifted from one foot to the other.
'Crazy old bastard. Had the gaul to try and name a few of us to implicate them in this. This, needless destruction...'
"Either way, I hope it won't prevent us from performing. We're something of a unique entertainment troupe, and have been on the road for a little over a week. We were hoping to rest at the local inn, get some supplies, provide a little levity and wonder, and be on our way."

The guard appears to buy your story, commenting,"Can't say I've heard of 'im before this, 'ave you Dave?" to which the other guard, evidently named Dave, replies in the negative. The first guard then looks back you at the party and says,"Before I let you lot go, any of you know any Svens or Gerats?"

Kheldar, being a dog, pretends to have no idea why everyone is so excited, and begins to playfully hop around, barking twice to get the attention of people around him. When nobody seems to pay him as much attention as he wants, namely that nobody immediately starts to wrestle or play with him, he simmers down and looks at his rider with pitiful look as if to say, If they won't, I guess you'll have to be the one to pet me.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like dogs can be awfully expressive with their looks and their various yips, barks, whines and growls.

Nuro chuckles, and keeps quiet as he scratches Kheldar's ears. With his claws. Is Nuro weren't so weak, it might have actually hurt.

When the guard asks about if any of them is named Sven, Nuro quickly repositions his unseen arm and attempts to hold Sven's mouth shut.

Torrain raises her hand and starts to bounce up and down when the nameless guard asks if anyone knows a Sven, "I know a Sven! But he lived back on Blest, little guy, pudgy too. He was so funny, would have made a good jester." Torrain pauses as she considers this new bit of information regarding this other Sven.

Sven

You all can hear the guards saying to a group in front of you,"Have you seen the terrorist-mage Haldavar or his accomplices? We have been informed he was traveling with a group of people, two of which were named Gerat and a... hmm how do you pronounce this name? A Sen? Sev? Sven?"

As the guards question the pronunciation of his Crystallan name, Sven almost chimes in to correct them. "It's--" is about as far as he gets before he remembers Orestes' words of wisdom from their boat ride after another tongue-lashing by the captain. Sven had tried to help, but wound up accidentally dropping a chest full of treasure overboard. As the captain fumed and Sven prepared his apology, the bard had whispered to him: "Sometimes the smartest thing to say is nothing, Sven." Now, as he had then, Sven obliges. Well, for a moment, at least.

Another of Orestes' sage pearls sprang to mind. It hadn't taken many conversations to learn that Sven had no predilection for lying. Realizing the warrior's complete inability for deception or duplicitousness, Orestes had seen the liability and instructed him, "For you, an irrelevant truth may be better than a relevant lie." Granted, they had to have a lengthy conversation about ear elephants before Sven understood exactly what Orestes was getting at, but the lesson had stuck. "I'm strong!" Sven beamed proudly, hoping to change the subject without having to directly say anything about the circus that didn't exist. He usually left that sort of thing to Orestes.

The guard eventually pass you through the security checkpoint and allows you all into Ao'Zet. You can now see the affects of Haldavar's short reign of terror everywhere, there are burned down tends, men being treated for third-degree burns, and just a general aura of pain and sadness. As you walk through the streets, Kheldar notices a red mass of robes unconscious in an alleyway, tucked away well enough that nobody else notices.

This red mass is you, welcome back

After his duel with the the warlord Forcas, the red wizard had been tied up and interrogated, his staff stolen by the much more powerful villain. However, Haldavar had escaped after outlasting Forcas in the interrogation tent, with only a few deep cuts into his leg. Angered by what had occurred, the wizard began to sneak through the camps, burning tents and men alive before slinking back into the shadows and continuing the work, slowly but surely riling the people until a fairly deserved panic undertook the camp. However, he eventually succumbed to his wounds that the warlord had cast upon him, and he passed out in a small alleyway, hidden from sight. He tried to stay awake, watching as the world spun around him, and as the ever-familiar scent of smoke burnt at his nostrils. Eventually his vision faded, and the man fell unconscious due to his incredible exhaustion. He doesn't appear to have any physical wounds trailing off him, save for some bloodstains on his robes, suggesting some kind of magical effect ails him.

"So any thoughts as to where we should set up shop? With the whole city in a panic I'd imagine we could find someplace that's lacking enforcement." Torrain fails to notice the red bundle and continues forward past the alley. Taking a survey of the city she's hoping an opportunity would present itself.

Ok since the whole city is in disarray I'm hoping that a knowledge(local) check will still have some bearing, if not I'm also going for a spot check; I'm hoping for something useful.

Sven

The giant hulking warrior was the first to notice the wizard laying in the alleyway, and his immediate reaction is to call out to the others. "Hey guys, it's Ha--" His voice catches, remembering from past adventures with Orestes that if the city watch was saying a name, it was best to whisper it. "It's Haldavar. He looks hurt." With that, Sven trudges over to the wizard and helps to prop him up, disregarding any insistence to the contrary from the wizard. "Good thing we found you," he says to the wizard as he looks over the smaller man's wounds. It was unclear to Sven which marks were new and which ones were a factor of the wizard's age, but he had seen Orestes perform enough first aid to do his best at imitating the more intelligent man. "Your leg looks hurt. What happened?" Sven looked to the mage with puppy dog eyes that look ready to believe any explanation except the truth.

Basically, if I get him to 0, he's staggered, and if I get him to -1, he's unconsious but not bleeding.

"I agree with you, Aestrus, but now is not the time," Orestes hisses quietly. "I for one still intend to complete our job, and the only way we can do that is if we stay calm."

Orestes goes over to Sven and Haldavar, and begins speaking short, clipped syllables under his breath. Soon an image of the alleyway appears, but where Haldavar was is merely a pile of rubbish. A look of intense concentration on his face, Orestes begins working on the near unconscious wizard. He covers the man's familiar red robe with the extra cloak in his bag, the one he had not worn since leaving his frozen homeland. He looks around until he finds a pile of ash that he can rub into the man's beard and eyebrows. He works like this for several minutes, then steps back to review his work. "Still needs something," he says, shaking his head. "Do any of you have wine?"

In one final indignity, he sprinkles wine all over the near-unconscious Haldavar. The smell of it, and familiar sight of wine stains, transform the terrible wizard into a old lush, staggering from a night's excess. Satisfied, Orestes lets the illusion of the alleyway drop.

Orestes casts silent image (Spellcraft DC 16 to identify) and concentrates on it to mask Haldavar and the party while he attempts to disguise him.

"Wow Orestes, I must say, that's impressive. He looks just like a drunk, well done. So it's probably best to find a place to work from. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd like to find out about this warlord in more detail before charging in, fires blazing." Torrain looks at Haldavar and shakes her head in disapproval.
