Appearance:Merik has the rangy build of all of the nomadic plainsmen. Dark completed with braided raven hair and mud-brown eyes his coloring is unremarkable, but his sharp straight features and whipcord build give him a look more rugged than handsome.

He wears the standard grab of all the nomadic tribesmen. Buck-skin leathers with a open vest, a corded belt holding his hunting knife, and waterskin, all adroned with bits of colored beads, small stones, and bird feathers. His favored weapon is a long hunting spear tipped with obsidian.

Personality Merrik has the reserve of most of his people although with him it's more of a veneer than a life style. He eaisly looses his temper and is often times very intense . This is especially a problem, when trying to talk with those out-side of his tribe because of his sub-par language skills. He often misunderstands meanings, and often misuses words. He can usually make himself understood, but it's often very frustrating for him. He is also extremely blunt as his people never lie. They don't even have a word it. As such he doesn't understand the delicacy of most social situations and will often just say whats on his mind.

Those who have the good fortune of befriending Merrik make themselves a life-long companion and fierce ally. His loyalty is unmatched and he tries his best to protect those whom he calls friend.

Pokemon Sky-Caller and Merrik have been companions for most of Merrick's life. It is tradition among the Plainsment that young tribe children to go on a trail of sorts when they reach age 12. They are sent out into the wilds around their village alone to test their mettle and are welcomed back as adults when they return. Merrik was hunting for food during his trial when he climbed up into a tree to steal some pidgey eggs for breakfast. To his chagrin he was in the process of cracking open the egg when instead of a yolk a baby pidgey fell out. Merrik was instantly taken with the chick and raised and fed it himself. As it grew they become inseparable and now do everything together.

Plainsmen:The Cloud-Singer Tribe is a small tribe of the western plainsman. A society made up of small clans and tribes of nomadic hunters and gatherers. Their culture is one based on communing with nature and the spirits of the world. They feel that it's the job of every person to make their impact on the world as small as possible. As such they have stayed technologically repressed, while the rest of the world has forged ahead.

The plains tribes live in small family units usually with a dozen up to a hundred or so members. They migrate across the plains following the herds of tauros and bufflants. They rarely interact with the non-plainsmen peoples aside from some light trading, or the occasional skirmish.

Each of the tribes has their own beliefs and social structure, but they are all relatively similar, usually worshiping nature or animal spirits. Some tribes focus more on craftsmanship, some on war, but all are self sufficient and hunter-gatherers.

Background: Merik is a junior member of the Cloud-Singer tribe. His mother and father raised him as tribe hunter and Merik took to the task with the exuberance of youth. He and his pidgey Sky-Caller were able to bring in a good amount of small game for his tribe. As he grew older he began to take on more responsibility and lead long hunts far into the plains for months at a time. He loved his life, wandering the world and sleeping under the stars until the chief(his father) recalled him from the hunters to start grooming him for leadership.

Merrik wanted nothing to do with this change. He loved to hunt and hated the politics and day-to-day leadership of his tribe. As time past the relationship between Merrik and his father degraded until finally Merrik had enough and left his tribe to travel again on his own. He set of into the world beyond the plains of his people and discovered a whole new world full of peoples and customs he did not understand. In spite of the hardships of this transition he found he enjoyed the wider wold very much.

Merrik hopes to find adventure and fortune in his travels so he may return to his tribe with honor. He fears his fathers reaction but is upset at having left his mother and sister behind.

Merrik's head snaped up, he was confused. A moment before he'd been splitting wood for a camp fire near the boarders of the great plains. Now he was looking down at a pit of some sort and everything was different. It had been late fall on the plains and the cold dry wind of oncoming winter had been rusting the colored leaves of the trees. Now the air was thick and hot, like high summer. Something was VERY wrong here.

Then the voice spoke. Merrik looked around wildly trying to find the source. It had not come from any particular direction, but EVERY direction, like something had spoken directly into his mind.

........Zapdos's feathers....what is going on here?

That's when he saw the other person in the pit. A skinny blond girl girl, a few years younger than himself and dressed in the clothing of some of the nations beyond the plains, looked at him with excitement. Then she threw her apricorn and attacked. The ball flew forward and with a flash of red light and a small yellow pokemon popped out. He didn't recognize it, but the markings on it's body had the hint of an electric beast..... this would be a problem.

He twirled his spear menacingly, trying to frighten the girl long enough to collect his wits. The girl might be a trainer, but he doubted she'd seen much hand-to-hand combat, perhaps he could intimidate her into making a mistake. Then he called to Sky-Caller. He hadn't seen the bird since he'd arrived, but he knew it wouldn't be far away

"Sky-Caller.... Attack" He cried pointing towards the girl.

A flash of brown dove from the sky, with a whoosh of air and a flapping of small wings. While Sky-Caller went after the girl, Merrik attacked the girl's beast, snapping out his spear in a reverse arc. The creature dodged nimbly, much faster than he anticipated, then closed inside his guard and attacked with flashing claws. Merrik felt fire on his side and the scent of blood hit his nostrils a second later. He stumbled back trying to bring up his guard once more. He gave a flurry of thrusts trying to drive the creature back and buy him some space to work with. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the girl much in the same position he was, falling back against Sky-Callers assault and trying to buy time while her pokemon fought Merrik.

Again he gambled on being a more capable physical fighter than the girl, and decided to stick to his initial plan. The next attack from the rat he countered with a circular parry knocking the creature to the side and allowing a counter attack with the spear head, it bit home into the creatures flank, not a killing blow, but a painful one at least. The creature reeled back with a snarl and the hairs on his arms began to tingle and raise as some strange power began to gather around the small creature.

His eyes widened in realization.. "Caller gust!"He shouted.. His pidgey instantly disengaged from the girl and began flapping it's wings rapidly, wind began to gather and in a moment the pit was filled with blowing dust and debris as an almost physical column of wind lashed the rat creature. he doubted the attack would be effective, but he'd only needed a distraction. As the wind slammed into the creature from behind it's concentration faded and Merrik crossed the distance to the girl in a leap, just as she readied her attack against his birds flanks. He caught her strike square with his raised spear and in a spinning sweep took her legs from under her sending her to her back at his feet.

He lowered the point of his spear to her throat. His trade speech wasn't very good, but he thought he knew enough to get his point across. His speech came out halting but his meaning was obvious... "Golden-hair girl.... Surrender or die."
