View Full Version : No Good Deed Goes Unpunished (IC)

The last of the sun's light has set beyond the tree tops that surround, leaving only the twilight of a crescent moon overhead. The pitter-patter of the persistent rain falls upon your cloaked forms as you huddle in your makeshift camp; the fire is banked, and the unluckiest of you pulls the first watch.

Whoever came up with the saying "No rest for the weary" clearly didn't comprehend your commitment to sleep. The past week has seen a treacherous descent down scree-slopes into the woodlands you traverse now, a frightening stare-down with a passing Treant, and an evening more terrifying sprint away from what appeared to be a band of drunken centaurs. It takes you a scant few moments to adjust yourselves before you are fast asleep, rain be damned.

Unfortunately, a brisk shake and harsh whispers quickly remind you that no good deed goes unpunished. Ten seconds later your party stands back to back, weapons ready, and now you all see the reason you were startled awake.

In the gloom beyond the dim fire-light sleek, lupine shapes slowly stalk out of the night. These wolves you are familiar with; normally not a danger to armed travelers, but something has provoked the local wolves to attack with much greater boldness than is common for their kind. Your eyes widen when a similar, yet much more unsettling shape materializes out of the darkness next to the wolves.

Like a wolf in form, the creature is significantly bigger with a strangely shaped head and more hunched, muscled shoulders. It bears a collar of some crude design, but doesn't appear to have a master with it. Indeed, the most shocking event of the night is when the creature opens it's mouth and a guttural utterance echoes out, entirely aberrant to any noise normally made by wolves. This sound drives the nearby wolves into action, leaping from the shadows and straight for your throats.

Roll Initiative!

EDIT: Initiative has been rolled (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17796582&postcount=32), order of initiative is below:
1- Erin
2- Wolf 1
3- Wolf 2
4- Boss Beast
5- Derrick
6- Gray
7- Wolf 3
8- Naomi

Alright, it begins :)

So you're being attacked. You are in a small camp setup in a little gully-like place, surrounded by trees (and now wolves). The strange wolf-creature is the picture shown above. Otherwise the wolves are normal looking wolves, albeit much more aggressive. This is a situation your party has likely been in several times, so no real need to roleplay panic (unless that's a character trait you've developed into your character). I'll post a battle-map probably tomorrow night.

This combat is meant to serve as a way to familiarize yourself with your party and your own character's mechanics. Remember, you've been traveling as a group for at least a fortnight, maybe more like three months, so you will likely have developed common party tactics and styles, things other characters understand without being told. This combat is a way to get you (the player) some experience that you (the character) realistically already has.

So don't panic, post at leisure, and feel free to chat with each other in the original Light's Last Shadow thread as you all work on becoming a well-oiled party.

The snap of a stick and the crackle of leaves brought Raylyn out of her restless nap. Between dreams and noises sleep just wasn't going to happen this night. With a yawn she stood to her four feet lazily before shaking the rain from her fur. She always did prefer to sleep in cat form, protection from the elements and just a higher level of comfort. Another noise coming from the groove of nearby fir trees put her on high alert. She stared out into the night, standing as still as one might think for a predator. Something isn't right. She told herself listening into the inky blackness of the night.

The forest was so thick with trees and vegetation, even if the moons and stars were out Raylyn still wouldn't be able to make out if anything was truly there. The air was still, but moist as the relentless rain continued to fell on their camp. Another sound had her jumping into action, pouncing next to the closest person and batting them in the head with her paw a few times to wake them. Very much how a cat would bat around a ball of yarn. She proceeded to repeat the process to anyone asleep, until the remaining members of the group were aware of the danger.

With her back to the now aware group she growled at the sight of the incoming wolves, the hair sticking up on end down her spine. Their forms barely visible from the glow of the dying fire. I knew I smelled wet dog. She thought to herself as the wolves growled back at her. And you. She thought turning her head to the look at the wolf that stood out among the rest. You look like a fun toy. Almost on cue a noise emits from the creature, a noise that makes Raylyn’s fur stick up even further. That’s gods awful, time to take care of that problem. Her mental voice continued as she shook her head, clearing out the noise.

After being awoken by the annoying pawing on my face I arose from my sleep to the piercing gaze of hungry wolves that had encircled our camp. "Here we go again", I mumbled to myself as I walked to the cowering group of travelers that aimed to stand their ground against these foes. I took my position at the groups side and tightened up my hand wraps for the quarrel that would shortly ensue.

Rrraaaaaugh Rik arched his back off the ground and let out an overzealous growl as he stretched the sleep from his bones.

The wilderness was relentlessness; it's constant presence invigorated him. His fingers curled around his blades and he fastened them to his belt as he slowly rose to his feet. Rik shook the last bit of dreams from his head, looking around and finally taking in the situation.

Valosix swatted away whatever was touching her head as she shook it and awoke to see the group alert and glancing through the trees.

What now? She thought to herself as she leisurely stretched and stood to be with the group. She looked over to her companions to see the heckles on the back on Raylyn's neck on end and her muzzle pointing in one direction through the dense, wet forest that they stood in. Following her gaze, she noticed a beast among wolves. Ah, a proper feast ahead.

As much as Raylyn really wanted a piece of the annoying wolf, making terrible noises she took her time and looked over the scene before her. Her experience told her not to jump into the middle of the hornets nest even if that was the fun thing to do. She spotted the lone wolf that had separated himself from the rest of the pack.

Bingo. She thought to herself as she took a quick glance back her group. Satisfied to give up her ‘safe’ position she ran towards the position of the lone wolf. The rough wet terrain not giving her much trouble she easily races up the slight slope to the wolf and tries to take a bite out of his neck.

A painful howl pierces the night as Raylyn flies across the wooded embankment and swats one of the wolves to the ground, her claws trailing blood and fur. Twisting away from the vicious druid the wolf snaps at her throat, but hasn't the strength to force it's jaws close enough to do damage.

The sound of paws digging earth and huffing between sharp teeth alerts Raylyn to approaching danger; another of the wolves has seen a chance to press their time-honored tactic: distract and dismember. Cutting the druid off from her party, the oncoming wolf dashes along the ridge line of the gully and swings sharply into the rear of Raylyn's position, trying to catch her distracted between two sets of sharp teeth.

The scuffle between the predators is eyed warily by the hulking wolf-creature. In a split second it has moved past that combat and turns it's baleful glare up on the remaining party members. Like a streak of brimstone-lit darkness it flies down the gully and leaps the remaining distance to slam into the tall, armored human. The brutal charge might have left a weaker man broken under it's rapid strength, but Rik caught it's claws upon his blades and seemed to merely shrug, tossing the beast to the ground, where it spun back to it's feet, snarling and facing the man once again.

Well, looks like it's a game for low rolls. All the wolves missed (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17806980&postcount=35) their attacks, leaving them vulnerable to counter-attacks from the party. Heroes, it's your turn.

The beasts hot breath clung to Rik's face, warming his frigid nose. The taste of dying innocence clung to his throat as he inhaled deeply. Pulling himself upright, he stared into the monsters eyes searching for his soul only to discover that he was very much from this world.

Damn, thought Rik. Deep inside he could feel the enthusiasm drain from him. Here he was, toe-to-toe with a hulking vicious creature of the wild and he was pouting that it wasn't the creature he wanted.

Weapons in hand he threw himself at his opponent. Half-hoping he would dispatch his enemy quickly; half-hoping this was just some sick dream and he was still asleep.

Valosix turned to see the pack leader throw himself at Rik. Eager that one she thought to herself whilst she was quite supprised at his boldness.

Stifling a slight laugh as both creature and man appear to have bumped heads instead of dealing wicked wounds to one or the other, Valosix decides to put this beast down. "Mangy wolf" she spits, as she throws out her arm an arc of pure electiricty (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17813279&postcount=49) seemingly shoots out of her palm towards the Alpha wolf.

In the shadows of the campfire and Valosix's magical lightning strike, claws and blades snap at each other. A matter of seconds have revealed to the wolves that this party is not the easy prey they were looking for. Smoke from singed fur still trails off the dead wolf at the halfling's feet; flickers of flame are still evident across his knuckles. Raylyn and Gray both whirl now to face the last wolf on that side of the gully.

Rik and the alpha beast face off against one another, sword against fang in the darkness. Neither gains an advantage against the other; all their strikes are turned or shrugged off through skill and sheer stubborn grit. That stalemate is quickly resolved, however. Valosix turns her draconic power against the beast, charging the air around her with deadly energy then hurls it at the creature, engulfing it in waves of searing energy. The beast howls it's pain, staggering under the assault. Flesh and fur are struck from it's bones, and blood oozes from the pockets of charred skin, but the beast refuses to fall.

Forgotten in the rush of combat, the remaining wolf slinks out of the darkness beyond the fire and uses the distraction to dive at the winged sorceress. It snaps at her thigh, seeking to get a strong grip and pull her down where her throat will be vulnerable, but her scaled skin is too thick and the wolf can find no grip.

That's the first round of combat. Wolf 2 is dead, and Big Bad Wolf has been desperately hurt by the lightning spell, but otherwise every thing else just missed a whole lot. We back at the top of initiative order, so it's up to Erin. Map has been updated.

As Gray appears only to kill her prey Raylyn huffs at him as she rubs her front paw against her face, feeling the excess blood on her fur. Typical. She says to herself as she hears a quiet growl from behind. Her thoughts are completely interrupted as she turns and faces the other wolf. She had been so focused on the first wolf she had not heard or seen the second one move to corner them. Pack animals, right. They work together to kill their prey. Idiot. With the mental beating in her own head she growls back at the animal who doesn’t seem to be backing down. Time for the second course. Her mental voice adds, the growl now showing sharp white teeth. With that she went for the throat of the animal once again, see if she could finish it off this time.

The night has turned and the predators have become the prey. Up on the ridge, Raylyn hisses in vicious laughter at the remaining wolf, watching as it divides it's attention between the hunting cat and the halfling lit in flickering flames. In a blink she strikes, during a split second of the wolf's distraction, and draws blood on this wolf as well.

Split from it's pack and facing two creatures it now recognizes as extremely dangerous, the wolf hunches it's shoulders and adopts a defensive posture, hoping to stall while it's pack leader (hopefully) brings down the enemy alpha warrior. It snaps at Gray in an effort to win some space, but miscalculates the speed of the ferocious druid and leaves itself open to a counterattack from the halfling's ally.

Near the fire, the beast wolf recovers it's ground from the lightning strike and summons the last of it's formidable energy, launching an attack against Rik again. The flurry of claws and teeth threaten to get past even Rik's seasoned guard, but at the last second the beast pulls back, afraid to leave itself vulnerable to a devastating final swing from the human warrior.

The wolves both fight defensively (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17816536&postcount=55) (increasing their AC at the cost of hitting power) and end up missing their targets (barely). Erin has an Attack of Opportunity against W1 as the wolf attacked Gray while in a square threatened by Erin.

Raylyn releases the hurt wolf from her mouth as it seems to refuse to give it up. You’re a druid now. She heard her brothers words from so many years ago in her head. I don’t think you are suppose to hurt animals. A growl once again echoed in her throat as blood stained teeth showed under her red muzzle. They threaten me, they die. Everything that threatens me or anyone I care about dies. She remained herself as she leap forward with everything she had latching on to its neck once again. With the will of a true predator she tears at the wolf until all that’s left is a mess of bone, blood, insides, and fur. Some of which sticks to her already gore laced muzzle. And that’s how you take care of something. She thought to herself as she glances up to Gray, pieces still falling off her face. She grins as much as a cat can and licks her lips. Purring with content she digs into the ground like a cat does when it tries to bury something behind them and trots back towards the fire and the rest of the group.

Dots still filled Riks vision and the taste of innocence was replaced with the smell of burnt-fleshed justice after the Dragonkin's lethal electricity attack. Rickson could feel the air, ripe with energy - spitting and cackling like an ever-storm. It reached out and danced across his lips as he smiled, numbing his face.

The rain had picked up and quickly washed the sleep from his bones. As he sheathed his shortsword, Rik scanned the area: the branches of the trees danced to and fro, naked under the steady fall of the rain from the heavens that soaked the leaves, strewn about the foot of each tree like the summer-skirts and cotton shirts discarded from the fall. Rik could feel the heat of the fire, reaching out and kissing his neck and warming his back through his travelers cloak. The half-man and feline were half swollowed by darkness. Not so much that Rikson couldn't make out the blood that covered them or the pleased look of pride they both wore for armour. Dots still blurred his vision. His blade sunk into it's place.

With a practiced swiftness his free hand took to his blade. Rik took a deep breath and threw himself behind his blade and into the burnt beast before him.

As Raylyn purrs her satisfaction over the destruction of the wolf-corpse at her paws, Gray momentarily seethes his frustration, the fires on his fists winking in and out as he clenches them. Then movement from the corner of his eye draws his attention and a grin spreads across his face. Like a miniature comet the halfling springs back across the battlefield and launches himself like a rocket into the remaining wolf snapping at Valosix. The attack sends the wolf flying to the ground, a smoking hole in it's side where it's heart had been.

Perhaps the beast-wolf could feel the death of his pack around it. Maybe the effects of Valosix's spell had truly dealt it a fatal blow, something the beast could hold off no longer. No matter the truth, Rik assured it of it's finality. The beast could only growl in defiance as the Rik side-stepped forward and swung through with his glittering blade, right through the beast's neck. Blood followed the strike in a smooth curtain, and then the beast slumped to the ground, it's fierce gaze ended for good.

In the space of four deep breaths the shocking violence has come to an abrupt end; the sounds of combat only echo in the minds of the victors, while the stillness of the night returns. The stillness is broken only by the dripping blood from Rik's sword, the labored breathing of the remaining combatants, and the crackling of the small campfire in their midst.

Congratulations! Your party has triumphed in it's first combat encounter. The XP award for this encounter is 375 XP per character; it was a CR 5 encounter, so you all performed above expectations. Good use of flanking on Gray and Erin's parts; Derrick and Naomi handled the major threat of the encounter with great teamwork as well.

Combat has ended, so feel free to post in any order as the mood strikes you. Aside from whatever you come up with, some things to think about dealing with: the corpses (they smell! Also, might attract more predators) and cleaning up your campsite, posting a next watch, checking the area for any other predators/ambushes that might have been drawn by the sounds of combat. A cloud of moisture escaped from Rik's mouth as he exhaled. His head still swam with the excitement of the short skirmish. He was still smiling.

The world slowly came into sharp focus as his head cleared and he realized that he was awake and alert. A list of tasks sprang to mind as Rik viewed the gore-filled campsite around him. He knew his companions needed food and the wolf meat should be as good as any. Besides, it needed disposed of one way or another. So the carcasses needed searched and salvaged for meat and then disposed of as to not attract predators. They might also scout the area to see if any other's of the pack remained and track the big bad that found them.

Well met, dragonkin. Rik loved the air, especially when it was pregnant with the charge of electricity. He liked this one.

We won't need to hunt for our breakfast this morn. Perhaps we should search the felled wolves and make short order of their meat. What say you halfling? Take up my shortsword and mince up these beasts. I will gather more wood for the fire.

Looking upon the scene Valosix smiled with pleasure. "Nothing like a savage beating to wake up the muscles in the early hours of dawn" she stated to no-one in particular as she flexed her still slightly glowing hand.

She nodded in agreement with Rik. "A feast of fresh meat if ever I saw one" she replied. "If its prepared I can cook it. Although I do prefer mine on the pink side I'll admit" she smirked to herself. Just shy of a pulse usually but I can be more civalized these days. Before searching for the wood to fuel the fire, Rik began searching the carcasses for clues. Perhaps this was just a random encounter but there certainly might have been greater forces at work.

We should check all of the bodies for peculiarities - scars, brands, charms and the like. I spotted a collar on our friend here, maybe it will point us in the right direction. Otherwise, I know there tracks most certainly will. I just have to get to them before the rain does. Rik began looking for the collar on the big bad, hoping the others might follow suit.

Rik's search of the beast-wolf's corpse leaves his hands covered in blackened fur and gore, but he retrieves the object he was looking for. Cut in twain from his sword stroke to the beast's neck, the pieces of the thick leather collar lay on the ground nearby, where Rik discovers them.

The collar is (well, was) a sturdy piece of leather with an emblem seared into it. The emblem looks like the paw of a beast, in either a circle or covered by a manacle perhaps. This collar (http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/323/1/0/wolfdog_collar_by_i_tavaron_i-d4gmmg9.jpg) shows a similar make (although the design is a little too well crafted, and not right)

Around the camp, Valosix manages to scrounge together an armful of salvageable meat from their now-dead ambushers. It takes awhile to skin the hunks of flesh properly, but within the hour they are ready to be cooked.

Derrick- Add the collar pieces to your inventory (if you choose to keep them). Please roll a Survival check to pick up any tracks, if Rik is going to attempt that yet tonight.

Naomi- Roll a Survival check to determine the amount of meat you safely recover and clean fit for eating.

Dragonkin, can you sense anything from this artifact. The beast was unnatural. Perhaps there's magic, here. Or perhaps I'm just a superstitious wanker. Rik felt foolish for his paranoia. The adrenaline from this encounter had left his mind reeling.

It's still quite early. We should all get some more rest.

Let's take care of the bodies. After we have our meat, we can smoke them over the fire while we finish sleeping. Rik announced as he walked around the camp gathering suitable pieces of wood. I'll take watch first, after the camps cleaned up. Ho, beast. Your ears and eyes seem keen. We owe you much in your efforts to rouse us before the blood really flowed. Would you mind allowing me a few moments in the early dawn to rest before we depart - whichever way we decide to go.

Rik threw the wood into the fire as he spoke, stoking the flame. Then gathered the carcass', pulling the good meat from their bones and discarding the waste into the flame.

After preparation of the meat, Rik leaves Valosix to finish curing the meat and stalks into the woods, following the clawed tracks of the wolves. The tracks are faint - the wolves were themselves proficient hunters and knew to avoid obvious signs of passage- and the moonlight faint, but Rikson is not deterred. A tuft of fur hanging from a thorn patch; a set of twigs crushed lightly into a depression in mossy ground; all these telltales shine like beacons to his eyes.

A quarter of an hour reveals a sinuous, but relatively direct path taken by the wolves. In fact, it is from the direction the party recently traveled out of...southeast, towards high ground that leads to the foothills of the Beastcrags. It is obvious to Rik's experienced eye that the tracks continue for awhile, describing a long, uninterrupted travel of the beasts. It would take him a better part of the night to follow them out of the woods.

Derrick- Do you follow the tracks farther, or head back to the camp area where the others are?

Naomi- Your culinary endeavors result in 8 servings of food (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17829568&postcount=70) for a medium creature.

As Rik returned to camp, he took care not to wake the halfling or the beast-cat.

I followed the pack's tracks. They lead south, the way we came. Rik spoke to the fire as his gaze melted into the yellow of the flame. His mind on the tasks at hand but quickly slipping into the memories of Aster's golden hair. The way that she smelled. The way she fit in his embrace. He missed her dearly. What say you, dragonkin. Should we follow the beasts while the trail is hot? He yanked his gaze from the the dancing fire, and his memories, and looked at the dragon-magus. Or stay and sleep while we can and make pursuit in the morn?

Valosix turned her head to the side a little as Rik spoke to her. You said it, not I she thought to herself as she looked back down to finish skinning the piece of wolf she held in her lap.

Without looking up she answered him "Pass the collar". As Rik handed over the item that had been taken off of the pack leader, Valosix brought it closer to her face and closed her eyes. Holding the collar with one hand she began to trace the pattern with her fingers and slowly began whispering a prayer, inaudible to the rest of her companions. The whispering stopped and her eyes shot open, glowing with a mysterious silver hue as she attempted to read the symbol as though it were a magical message left for her intentionally.

-------

As Rik returned to camp after following the beast's tracks and informing Valosix of his findings he seems eager to keep on going. He's running from something. Whether it be current or a memory, he's too distracted she mused. "Rest for now man, we will have plenty to do in the daylight. I have prepared the meat, and its smoking as we speak" Valosix beckons to the pan sitting on the smoldering coals of the quickly dying fire. "It will be good to keep till needed".

The piece of the collar bearing the emblem seems to glow faintly in Valosix's mind; it becomes clear to her that the circle about the paw is indeed a manacle, specifically crafted and acting as the anchor of some type of spell or ritual binding. A moment of concentration begins to form the essence of the spell itself in the dragon-mage's inner eye; she can hear the whisper of iron and knows the feeling that a subtle voice evokes, demanding action.

As you say, dragonkin. Wake me when you need.

Rik breathed deeply as he walked over to where the halfling lay. Thoughts swarmed his mind like a hornets nest. Where did these beasts come from? What does the symbol about the collar mean? Why can I not get a full nights sleep, just once. And more constant thoughts: Who are these creatures I call companions? What is their purpose? Can I trust them? All among the ever present, Where is my Aster?

With each breath the thoughts were set aside and tucked away in his mind. By the time he reached the halfling he was already half asleep. Without much thought, he pulled off the bulk of his armor. Draping his cloak over his traveling cloths he lay down beside the half-man and pulled him into his embrace, the way a big-spoon might a little-spoon. In a surprisingly soft voice he said, Sleep easy. You're among friends, little warrior.

Soon the camp was back to sleep, the dragon's eyes watching over them.

The morning reveals a strangely idyllic scene, contrasted against the brief horror of the night and exhausting journey of the day before. The rain has momentarily abated as the clouds have moved north. This has left your campsite lit by clear morning light through the pine-boughs of the trees; you can smell the dew upon the leaves, and feel a fresh, soft wind coming down from the highlands behind you.

The campfire has burnt down to a small pile of ashes, though it's warmth has kept the meat smoking the whole night through. Little except bones and scuffed ground is left tell of the night's fierce battle. The last member at watch is packing the camp gear and preparing to wake any of the party's heavier sleepers.

Your journey out of these godless lands leads you west, towards the fertile fields of the kingdom. But behind you lies tracks of predators who may have been more than simply advantageous animals; the tracks lead back nearer the Beastcrags, a source of danger for all travelers. Whichever direction you travel, the only surety is that it is unlikely to be an uneventful trip.

Time to break camp and decide what to do. You've fought your way tooth and sword, mile by mile, this far; will you push on, giving no pause in your journey? Or will you investigate the tracks? Or even make a deviation to your plans, traveling a different direction now, in case you truly are being pursued by more than wolves?

Valosix yawned and stretched awake as she lifted herself into a sitting position. Looking up through the canopy of pine she smelt the air around her. Ah, fresh dew and newly smoked enemy. she thought to herself. Taking a moment to dwell in it's splendor before the decisions and actions of the new day began.

She turned to look at Gray who seemed to have been the first of the group to awaken. "Well then, to back track or not seems to be the question here. My selfish needs and wants of a hot bath and feather bed tell me to travel onward towards the kingdom. We have traveled far and still have farther to go, so why would I knowingly back track and add more weeks to the journey?" She looked again upon the half-ling to see a reaction to this statement, then decided to go on. ""However, I also know that those beasts we slaughtered were not merely frolicking in the woods nor did they just stumble upon us by accident. That collar had a divine command spell placed upon it. By whom I do not know but I am sure that it was no mere coincidence." Valosix went silent, reflecting on the spell she had read and whom it was that had not only been tracking them, but wanted them dead for good measure. After a few moment she shook herself out of her reverie. "We need to find out who placed that spell and why. And if we do not get a why we will at least get finality over this whole situation." Yes, better to kill the source that to flee from it she concluded.

With the group seemingly deciding on sleep and bbq whether then moving on Raylyn shifted herself back to cat form and settled down in front of the fire. I swear this lot may get me killed. She grumbled to herself before shutting her eyes to get whatever sleep she could. The warmth of the dying fire somewhat of a comfort. What felt like no time what so ever she twitched her ears hearing movement and now even talking. Sounded to be Grays voice yammering on about something. With a big yawn she opened her eyes to see it was now morning. Fresh morning air clearing her head from sleep as she stood up looking around the camp. The whole group seemed to be up and discussing options. She could still taste blood in her mouth as she glanced to where the fight had taken place last night. Weird that wolves came after us. Her mental voice questioned as she trotted back over to where the fight had taken place.

Tracks were left in the damp soil from the scuffle, some being hers others leading back off to the woods. Woods she knew from many years go and had a good idea of where the tracks lead back to. A place she had no intention of visiting again. She huffed at the tracks before trotting back to the group shifting to her human form. We move on. She said in answer to the conversation going on. She grabbed her pack off the ground and threw it over her shoulders. We don't need any more trouble, enough of it finds us. Motivation for getting out of there driving her now as paranoia and fear crept forward.

Rikson lay awake listening to the others staking their claim on where they should go next.

The dragonkin and halfling have the thirst. 'Tis good too, for they will get their fill by journey's end, I'm sure. Rik took careful consideration of the beast-cat by the fire. This one seemed more complex - her reservation was not unlike the druids of the Swornson but something seemed off about her. What wood-walker would rather journey into the kingdom than avenge the wild. There is more to this one.

Wild One, what draws you from these woods? Should we not seek out the source of these atrocitious beasts and put a stop to them? 'Tis unnatural and should face the Wild Justice.

Rik felt the cool earth, still damp, against his bare palms. There was an excitement in the prospect of setting the balance.

Raylyns eyes narrow into slits as she drops her pack back on the ground and glares at Gray. Scared? Go take a look at the stain on the forest floor of the wolf I killed last night. Then tell me how scared I am. She points back to where the fight had taken place the night before. Fear of being slaughtered yes. She says matter of factly addressing Rik and Valosix now. How much should I tell them. She questions in her head really wanting to move on from these woods. Not sure if you guys know where we are but I do. You follow those tracks back and you will start to hear the calls of hippogriffs and the wind whistling. Then as you get even closer you will see the beastcrags rising up towards the clouds. This is.. She stops for a moment to correct herself. This was my home, the home of my people. A people that were hunted and slaughtered and if we don’t get moving it could easily happened to us also. She reaches down and picks up her pack once again. I want to take care of the wolves as much as anyone but trust me, we need to leave this one alone and move on before we end up as a stains ourselves.

Now, calm down Gray. Rik could see the obvious aggitation in Raylyn and his heart broke for her. He could feel his stomach open up to a strange emptieness and his entire existent slowly slide into it. He felt light and weak. This was empathy. It felt much the same when he left the Swornson, his home, and Aster.

How did I not know this? Rik racked his brain to remember when Raylyn had joined them. Gray had joined him relatively early into his journey North and since wandering into these northern lands with the halfling they had picked up two more companions. But in these woods the mist rolls through and a dull grey blanket covers the sky and nights and days bleed together. The ever present feeling of being hunted had taken the forefront on everyone's mind. Now, Rik was starting to understand. The break in the clouds and a full nights sleep was quick to take his wits from him but Rik could feel the emptiness that he had slowly fallen into erupt. His mind buzzed. They'd been in one place for too long.

Raylyn might be the only one thinking clearly, lately. We have lost ourselves in our dreams. Rik was careful not to appear aggitated. He slowed the words as they came to his tongue and spoke them with gentle force. I propose we move. I believe we should see what is of the towns ahead. Dread filled Rik as he imagined what awful things might already be happening. There are to be answers on the road ahead and that information might better equip us for truely vanquishing our new and mysterious foe. Valosix, please keep the collar close. We may be able to mend it so that we may return it to it's rightful owner, as well as the justice she deserves. If you wish not to carry it then I shall.

I need to learn more about my new friends.

Do any oppose?

Surprise overtook Raylyns mind as Rik spoke and tried to reason with the rest of the group to leave this place. Usually she has to fight tooth and claw before people realize that she could possibly be right about something. Her instincts calming down with the hope of being on the road again. Ever since she left home she never did like staying in one spot for too long. Moving around has kept her alive and hidden this far. Then she heard the mumbling coming from the other guy of the group. The halfling was talking again and with that out went her calm and collected attitude. If this little problem gets us all killed I am going to be royally pissed. She thought to herself smirking slightly.

Since we are just cowards with our ‘tails between our legs’ She added emphasis on Grays quote. You should show us how to be brave warriors. Be my guest and go get those pesky wolves. Show us how one does that while fighting a group of fanatics that are likely still hiding in these woods. She crossed her arms against her chest and took a deep somber breath. She really hated digging up old memories. My tribe were warriors and they got slaughtered in minutes. What chance do you think our little group here stands against these people? The question directed at more then just Gray at this point. She wanted to press the need to move and move fast. They had already waited around too long and with the smells of smoke, death and meat lofting into the forest we were becoming ripe targets for an attack. Whether animal or cultist it wouldn't be pretty.

Gray, being the ex thug off the streets he is, never thought to run from a fight. Whoever was trying to get at you eventually will so why not end it all now. Leaving this problem in the wilderness for someone else to clean up was also against his believes with his new order or monks he was affiliated with.

not very strong warriors these cat people must of been.

so what do you suggest? Do you want to run all your life? Or do you want to take revenge on these monsters? If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything...

Gray being the ignorant type since day one stood by his opinion of tracking and destroying this evil.

Valosix had leaned back and listened to the party bicker over the decision for a while and yet they had still some no closer to choosing a path to follow. She wanted to ignore the attack and move along their journey but the knowing in her heart and mind told her not to just stand by and let pass. How could she in good conscience move forward and potentially put the neighboring towns and villages in a perilous situation they had no knowledge of or warning? Yes the druid had prior experience with what we think is attacking us but what if its something else entirely? It wouldn't be the first time there had been more than one band of criminals attempting to take over the provenance. At this point she stood, her wings expanding out behind her. Wanting to draw a little attention to herself now that she was about to speak she snapped them back suddenly and a gust of wind went through the camp, intending to silence the petty talk currently going on.

"You two" Valosix stated looking between Raylyn and Gray "have been at each others throats since you first met" Quite literally if the druid had her way she thought as this wouldn't help the situation to say out loud. "Having a divide in this group will only weaken every single one of us. Would you rather we split in two and halved our strength?" Valosix gave each a hard glare. "We know for a fact that those wolves were on someone else's orders. Now that their not going back, the master will ultimately figure that they failed. He now has two options" She held out two fingers. "Leave us be or send more and better equipped minions to finish what he started. Now I don't know about you but I for one will not be held responsible for leading this danger into a town of innocents" At this point Valosix turned and picked up her belongings. Placing her satchel over her shoulders she turned back to the group. "Those who want to leave please do so but I will be back tracking to find out who is on our tail" Something has to get through to them she thought. Looking around she noticed a skin of water that was left on the ground. Valosix pointed at the water skin and it began to rise. It was following the motion of her arm. She slowly tipped her hand and the water poured out onto the still smoking camp fire which hissed in return. "You douse the fire at the coals, not walk away and let the forest burn" she added, throwing the skin to one side she turned to walk back the way they had came.

Now grinning uncontrollably and looking at the druid with his head slightly cocked as to show a sign of victory.

Looks like not all the party is naive. I will follow your lead Valosix.

It appears someone else has some common sense and sees the importance of stopping this evil. This, however, will be difficult without a full party but it must be done no matter the cost. Perhaps Rik will come, he seems like the heroic type at least. And if the cat knows whats good for her she will tag along and not be left alone on the road to the kingdom.

Gray stepped off towards where the others seemed to fear to tread. He began to hum a solemn tune to himself as he knew what lied ahead would not be an easy task and that not all, if any, would return. This choice was already made for Gray though. His mission he took after leaving the monastery was to right what all he could in the world with no bars as to what the cost may be.

Raylyn growled under her breath as she was scolded for trying to keep the party breathing and not as a pile of dead. Right now only one other seemed to have sense in the group and it was grinding on her last nerve. Why did they all feel the need to go take out revenge on some master of wolves with a fancy collar. She thought to herself trying to understand something besides the red hot anger she was feeling. Hey idiot, you would go after the wolves too if we were somewhere else. Her mental voice lectured just as Gray decided to rub it in that someone actually agreed with him.

The only one naive is you half wit. She blurted out before she could stop herself. You mistake my fear for weakness and it is anything but. It is my strength and inspiration to be better. To one day be strong enough to avenge my fallen family. To take down the Crusade before they can hurt any other Shifters and anything else they consider diseased. She turned her attention from the halfling no longer worth her time to Valosix. And you talk of unity when you just turned your back to walk away, giving your opinion then the hell with everyone else. She sighed listening to her own words as she had done the same thing as well. Her head so clouded with memories and anger it was getting difficult to make good sane decisions. She wanted to say to hell with them all and just strike off on her own, get her own way and prove she was the best. Experience and wisdom told her she that would be one of the dumbest ideas of her life. And that was saying something. Look, I’m not saying these wolves have anything to do with the Crusade. In all likelihood they are completely separate entities and it’s just some dim wit with a fancy spell.

She stopped for a moment hating to be the grown up she knew she had to be. How about we compromise a little? She questioned looking between each person of the party. I will help back track and find this master, make sure no one else gets hurt because of us. She offered a ‘you were right’ nod to Valosix before continuing. I know these woods and where he and the rest of his beasts could be hiding. However we find any hint of cultist fanatics out here I am gone and I would suggest that you all follow me. That fight will come and you are all invite. It will be bloody and worth it, but now is not the time.

And maybe something will eat Gray along the way. I couldn't possibly miss that. She added in her own head, a grin crossing her face as she eyed him. What vicious critter wouldn't like halfling chowder. She walked towards the two shifting to cat form in mid stride. It was going to safer this way for all involved and her predatory instincts were working on overdrive. Being human and responsible was way too much work for her and she needed to hunt.

Rik could feel the rift in the party growing. Despite the trials faced together thus far, these people were not companions. The only common thread here was survival.

As the others worked out the decision, he packed up Whiskey with his belongings. These people lacked conviction, they spoke of one thing and acted in complete opposition to it. They lacked balance and that unsettled him. The conflict that rages in each of them will tear them a part and no matter where we go, we'll all fall. Rik's skin tingled and his face grew hot in frustration as he quietly went about his business, seeking out the trail he found last night from atop his steed.

From where the tracks began, he watched the others until the beast-woman conceded to following the tracks. As much as he would have liked to better prepare himself for the fight ahead he understood the dragonkin and her halfling weren't going any further and they all seemed to understand, except for maybe the halfling, that dividing the force was to great a risk.

The beast-woman concedes. Your argument is won, halfling. Let us begin our hunt before we become the hunted. To the 'crags.

Daybreak shines sparsely through the boughs of the nearby trees on an empty campsite in the little gully; it reveals only ashes and the remnants of last night's battle. Another battle has been fought this morning - one of will instead of sword - but the remnants of this one travel with the four companions, bleeding cuts that time alone will heal or fester.

Rik and Raylyn force themselves to focus on the task at hand, while Valosix and Gray seem eager to push on while unsure what to do about it. The weather matches the mood of the party: the air is close, moisture hanging in the air still but without the rain it only makes the forest sticky and unnaturally warm.

Rik needs to make a series of Survival checks to follow the tracks. He can pick them up from last night easily enough. Anyone else with the Survival skill and Track feat can do the same. Anyone with just the Survival skill can roll to aid Rik in locating tracks (successful check gives Rik a +2 bonus on his Track)

while tracking

Drinking from his waterskin to wash down the last bite of his light breakfast, Rik turned to look at the rest of the group. After a long draw he extended his arm, and the skin, to Raylan and flashed a friendly look.

He had unburdened himself of his heavy traveling cloths to better free himself of the stifling humidity. He also favored his longsword, keeping it hung at his side while his other blade was saddled with his horse, Whiskey, but easy enough to pull from his back. He walked on foot now and carefully to stay close to the now fading tracks. Staying focus to preserve his concentration and holding his bow, arrow notched, he stretched his senses in all directions.

The air was heavy and when there was a breeze it pulled over him like a cotton sheet. It clung to the inside of his nose and his throat as they followed the trail of broken sticks, disheveled leaves, and the occasional muddy prints on the forest floor. The smell cleared his mind. It was the warmth of the earth, like overturned mulch he could distinguish the distinct flavors: the rich, pungent odor of dying wood and the deep acidic aroma of life made anew. Beneath it all, the smell of rain from the night before danced - and he could smell her just before she was forgotten.

His task cleared his head and soon enough it became him. Dedicated to his purpose he worked with diligence until it was second-hand and his mind would wander.

Who are these "cultist" that Raylan keeps talking of. What is there purpose? What provoked the attack and merciless ess on Raylan'a village? Have other peoples suffered the way she has? Rik was eager to discover answers but knew how fragile the topic might be. He worked hard to think of a way to get her to talk and bind them closer but just before he was about to discover and answer, he'd realize he lost site of the task at hand.

Where did the trail go?

Ah, there it is.

And the it was back to the hunt.

The light was kept from his brow by the straw hat on his head and Gray was kept cool by his light robe and clothes of the monastery he hailed from. The road was home for the halfling, outside combat, and it was where he was able to collect his thoughts and keep all things from burdening the little warrior. As he walked he kept a little distance from the group as to keep from being disturbed from his thoughts.

This cat being speaks of these cultist monsters. I don't recall seeing any such on my journey. How could they be tied to these wolves? Even though she may not feel that she can we must avenge her people by sending those that defiled all she had and sending them to whatever perverted deity these beasts worship. We may not see eye to eye but I am not her enemy she walks the path of righteousness just as all my companions seem to. Maybe after we do what we must perhaps amends can be made. Oh well, at least we can feel this new found enemy up to see what they are made of. It seemed that Valosix wanted another taste of them anyway.

HA Gray, accidentally allowing an outburst out laughing at his own thoughts. The lightly packed warrior of the fist kept a brisk pace up with the group and his demeanor seemed to become a little more relaxed now that the group was on the path of righteousness.

Stride after stride Raylyn moved on through the forest, her paws lightly sinking into the soft forest floor. She was actually enjoying the feel of the hot and humid air around her. Home sweet home. She commented to herself as the sights, smells, and sounds became all too familiar.

The trail had long since disappeared for her but she continued on as Rik seemed to be following something. Her senses remained on high alert though as her predator mind focused on the path ahead. The fear of what could be lurking out here hung on at the surface of her mind, slowly being replaced by thoughts of the current hunt. This is probably a really stupid plan. Her inner voice commented listening to the footfalls of the group around her. They don’t have a clue what they are getting into. A waterskin passed into her vision interrupted her focus, causing her to narrow her grey eyes into slits and looking over to Rik. Relaxing she saw the friendly gesture and shook her head back and forth before returning her mind and eyes back to the forest.

It was nice to have a friendly ally and she hoped more would follow. If she was to fight this coming battle she was going to need all the allies she could find. I guess a little stupid can be okay, long as I get to fight. She said to herself trying rationalize the current situation in her head.

When Valosix had turned from the group after her elaborate ultimatum, she had grimaced. I hope this works she had said to herself when taking that first step away from the group, and with the second step her heart skipped a beat. What have I done? had just been thought when Raylyn had spoken up. Relief flooded her being as she breathed a silent sigh of relief. Talking was good, reason was better but unity is crucial. Praise my blessed people!

Valosix grinned whilst no-one could see her expression, not letting the others call her out on the bluff. Let them say what they wish about me but I sure as hell got us walking in the same direction. Although she knew it would brake Raylyn's pride, some tough love was indeed needed in order to get this group going and going together! I will make up for it at some point I'm sure she decided to herself.

Although the dragonkin had indeed put herself in the leading position of the group she quickly began to regret that decision. Taking quick glances over her shoulder with every few steps Valosix slowed her pace slightly to let the Man catch up. Although it seemed that he was more distracted with making sure the shifter felt at ease being with this particular band of 'people'. Good good she thought But I need someone with knowledge of where we are going. After walking this way for some time she sighed in exasperation. She knew she had to swollow her pride for a minute here and tell the group she had no idea what the hell she was doing.

"Ahem" Valosix tried to cleared her throat. "So then.." she began to say. Dammit, why do I put myself in these situations? she asked herself. An exasperated sigh was audible before Valosix continued "Rik come take the lead will you?" she said with a little too much force than she initially intended. "I seem to have lost sight of the tracks" she added. There, humble without seeming stupid. I hope...

I'd be happy too assist, Valosix. Rikson flashed his best grin and took point on the loose formation of the group. He scanned the vegetation closest to the ground, the area that would have been most molested by the pack animals and found a faint trail. The champion of the wild followed it into the wood and so began the dance.

Hours pass and the sun's light can be seen briefly between the tops of pines directly overhead. Dew has gone from the ground and any chance of using tracks laid in the ground softened by rain last night has past; dust and pine needles are all that remain upon the ground. The process is maddening for Rik as he finds himself circling known tracks, veering out on possible trails only to end up in a washed out gully or climbing through banks of indiscernible brush. Eventually the wilderness warrior finds his stride, however. Something catches the druid's eye, and she converses briefly with Rik, who nods and raises his eyes to the sky. Quickly he sets out again and within a quarter-hour he has picked up the trail with confidence.

Over moss-covered hills, down into marshy glens, through creek-beds and trackless trails the party marches, single file, step after step back into the wilderness. Raylyn ranges easily past the group and out on the sides, covering the distance with the ease of one born to this environment. Gray and Valosix follow hard on Rik's heels, and Rik himself is consumed with his task. Even sights and sounds of his adopted land are lost on him during this singled-minded pursuit.

Several miles into the depths of the Cragwood, Rik stops and looks about, his face stern with concentration.

Derrick- Rik had trouble picking up the trail at first, but is on it like a bloodhound with those last four Track rolls. Unfortunately, it looks like all his attention was spent there, as he was unable to effectively Trailblaze or look for resources/clues from the natural environment. Until now. He stops because two things have come to his attention. The trail divides; one leg is the trail you've been following, and continues east, while the second splits and heads south. The tracks for the south trail, however, indicate a larger pack than the one dealt with last night. The second thing he notices is that the spore of prey animals all lead north, opposite any direction chosen by the predators. A good choice for the prey, but unusual for natural predators to head opposite their natural prey.

Erin- Raylyn's spot check clued her into the strange lack of birds in the trees above them. The ever-present crows of the Cragwood seemed to be conspicuously missing.

As the group moved on through the forest Raylyn watched as Rik took lead from Valosix who seemed to not really know where to go. Then there was Gray who was following along just laughing to himself. This group has no idea where they are heading. She thought to herself as even she had lost the tracks of the wolves.

With a quick decision she left the path and trotted out into the undergrowth of the woods. With natural ease she scaled the down trees and navigated her way through the plant life like she had done most of her childhood, these woods hardly providing a challenge anymore.

She kept her eyes open to any tracks or broken branches while her ears flicked back and forth keeping track of forest sounds. The squirrels bouncing between branches, the wind moving the leaves, and the birds... She stopped herself and looked up into the canopy of humid forest, light being filtered through a sea of green. The normal choir of songbirds was missing, not even the annoying caws of the crows could be heard. Nothing fluttering around in the tree branches, the birds were just gone. Well that's strange. She thought to herself leaping up on a fallen log to get a different vantage point into the canopy. This area should be humming with bird activity, how did I not notice it til now? Her inner monologue questioned before she realized she was much more calm and focused now.

Even with the terrible memories the forest had instilled an inner calm from all the fear and anger she had been feeling. She was able to think clearly and turn her attention to these little details. Jumping off the log, she trotted back towards the path and the group. Wonder if we are getting close to this master, two odd occurrences within such a small area can’t be a coincidence. Suppose the others should know. She said to herself in a reluctant way.

Breaking into a run she cleared over logs and splashed through a creek before busting through the overgrowth right in front of Rik and stopping hard on the moist ground blocking the fork in the trail. She cleared the leaves and sticks away from a spot in front of him with her paws and began to draw two half circles in a row indicating a bird with her claw. She then put an X through it and looked up at him expectantly, hoping he would get the idea. Talking never high on her priority list, and being in cat form gave her an advantage in case of ambush.

It would seem that we aren't the only ones with nothing to say. Raylyn has pointed out the absence of song from above, not even the crows call their cadence. Rik crouched down beside the cat and took a moment to lock eyes and give her a look of gratitude. Every little bit helps.

Standing upright he continued, The silence isn't the only unnatural thing happening. Scanning the trails and trying to make sense of it himself, he gathered his thoughts. The tracks diverge here. A larger path comes from the south, these are our hunters - the wolves we encountered. If we continue east we will find the animals they usually prey upon. It's strange; I've never known a pack to willfully abandon a sure enough feast like this. These woods become stranger and stranger.

Rik could feel the burden of the long hours tracking catching up with him. It most certainly would help to have your assistance. I know this land is unfamiliar but if all of you would keep your eyes and ears open it could really help us all.

Rik returned to the tracks following them both a dozen feet before returning to the divide. He looked around the underbrush for any unusual signs and listened to the stillness in the empty air hoping the others would follow suit and see if they couldn't find clues that he might be missing or offer suggestions he hadn't thought of next. If they didn't realize it now, they were in a very dangerous place and complacency would surely get them killed.

"Well I am not one to keep my eyes on the ground looking for tracks in the daytime, BUT" she added with a smirk "I do however do well with heights" And with that Valosix crouched on one knee placing one hand on the dirt track. With a quick glance at each of her companions, wings outstretched, Valosix jumped up to the bough of a tree overhanging above them. Grabbing a hold of the trunk she climbs to the top of the tree to look out over the forest. Eyes squinting from the brilliant sunshine Valosix looks out, searching for any smoke from recent fires or glades between the dense trees. She also listens for any unnatural sounds that may be heard.

The conspicuous silence of avian animals becomes like a thorn that cannot be found; in the back of their minds the adventurers cannot avoid listening for sounds that aren't there, wondering about their portent.

For Valsosix, however, it is a boon as she turns her ear to the wind. Into the silence faint sounds carry to her from atop the tall pine, as much felt on the wind as heard. A vibration, maybe thunder or something crashing against rocks, echoes from the east; in between the sound, a higher pitched noise comes to her from the south: a howl.

While Valsoix clambers up the tree, Rik fights through his tense attention to the task at hand. Still on edge from the conflicts of the last day, he manages to breathe in the wild air and refocus beyond just the tracks in the dirt. The signs of the land start to become apparent to him.

Derrick- Rik realizes that moss has started to grow in this area, as well as deeper patches of wild flowers, which indicates some persistent water source might be near. Judging by the reddish dirt, the hills nearby might contain iron or copper deposits, and nearby groves will contain thickets of bloodwort, mulberries, bittermoss, and blackthorn. Badgers and boar proliferate in such environments, and the fey can sometimes be found sometimes in grooves with blackthorn and ash trees.

Surprise and even a relief wash through Raylyn as Rik explains to the others what she had drawn on the ground. That worked out better than I thought it would. She said to herself as Rik locked eyes with her. Her grey cat eyes looked back at him studying his face as he spoke to her. She offered a nod of her head before turning around to look at the fork in the path.

She listened as Rik explained what he had found and looked between the two paths herself to see what he was talking about. Path to the wolves, easy. Her inner voice announced before turning around and noticing Valosix climbing a tree and Gray whittling. Her impulsive nature just couldn't understand the ‘lets take time to make a decision’ attitude of this group. She wanted to get this fight over with and get out of here before things went south for them.

With a massive inhale and exhale to control herself she trots over a few feet towards the south path, turns towards the group and sits down marking her vote. If they came from this way I would bet their master or whatever it is will be there too. She mumbles to herself glancing between the members of the group. Last time most ignored her words, maybe actions would have better luck.

From atop of the pine Valosix shudders. Not with the gentle breeze that can be felt but from the sounds which the breeze itself carries. They are hungry, but not as much as I she declares to herself. With a quick glance once more over the scenery laid out before her she begins to climb down the trunk and jumps, to land gracefully back on the dirt track.

Noticing that the druid has set herself down in front of the southern track, the one with which Valosix had heard the wolfs cry, she heads on over to stand by her companions side. "Raylyn is correct. I could hear their howls from the south" Valosix takes a sideways glance at the cat besides her and gives her a nod of approval but Raylyn's eyes were grey and unreadable. We will give her justice in the end

"Let's get going. They can't be too far off now as I heard their calls. Although we should get into the trees a little for coverage if you ask me. better to surprise them, than to be spotted before hand"

Raylyn takes the lead as the party heads down the southern trail. Only a few hundred feet later the piercing howl can be heard again, clearer this time, though still in the distance. Suddenly you notice the forest thins a bit, and ahead you can tell that a glade of some sort awaits.

New noises are on the wind now, echoing from the glade ahead. Low growls, and an unsettling barking laugh.

Everyone - Roll Listen, Spot, and Move Silently checks. Remember, when not under duress, you can take 10 on these. If the party is going to just send one or two to scout, then I just need the scouts to roll and the others to post that they are waiting.

Crouching down, Rik knotches an arrow in his bow. He looks around the party to see who will follow. Knowing how eager they all were to fight, he figured no one would take the rear.

He paused. Perhaps I should sit tight and support from here

Sst, Rik pushed air between his tongue and teeth to make a dull but sharp noise to get the groups attention, I'll stay. Watch the rear and make sure we don't get flanked or flank if I need to. I'll cover you with my bow and if you need my blades just call for me. I'll be there in a moments notice.

Rik then turned his back on the glade and stared into the darkness, reaching out with all his senses to see what he might feel.

Raylyns ears flicked back and forth, hearing the howls of the wolves as they echoed from down the south trail. Definitely the right way. She said to herself as she stood up and lead the group southward towards the source of the animal noises. Growls and unsettling noises ahead of the group stopped Raylyn after a very short distance down the path. An area of thinning trees and unfiltered light lay ahead of the group, same place as the noises. Good place for an ambush. She thought looking back to the rest of the group. Rik was preparing his bow for cover, apparently thinking the same thing.

I am going to circle around the clearing and see if I can figure out what and how many are up ahead. She announced to the group as her form shifted back to human. I will come back with what I find. She turned to walk away then stopped and glanced back to the group. And if you hear a jaguar roar, that means I found myself a fight. She added with a smirk on her face as she shifted back to her black cat form.

With a look left, then right she jumped into the forest on the right side of the trail, hoping to circle around whatever was ahead and get a better look. As quietly as one at home in the forest could, Raylyn blazed a path through the mud, leaves, and branches of the forest floor towards the edge of the clearing. And now for the fun part. She thought to herself settling down between the plant life to watch.

Valosix nodded to each member as they made their next moves. Her eyes followed Raylyn as she stalked off into the forest to scout out the up-coming confrontation and spun back to check Rik was still in ear shot. Thinking it for the best Valosix quietly moved to a nearby tree and stood with her back resting on it in an attempt to keep out of site (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17894969&postcount=95). Exhaling after a deep breath she tried to listen (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17894820&postcount=93) for any signs from the prey but the sound of her own heart beginning to pound in excitement would not let her. This human form doesn't have thick enough skin to cover the heart she concluded. She looked to the ground to see if she could spot anything out of the ordinary but with Raylyn's quick departure she couldn't differentiate between hers and any that may have been left earlier. With this is mind Valosix planted her foot on the dirt with another resting on the moss covered trunk, ready to spring forth if need be.

Stalking into the thick undergrowth, Raylyn falls easily into her old patterns from when she and her tribe ran the hills of her home. Her vision is sharp, missing nothing; she hears the forest and all within it, the darting hart and the rising noises of violence ahead if her.

Some habits are rusty, though. As she catches sight of an bestial humanoid, out of place in this wildnerness, the sleek cat misses a covered slope and missteps, shuffling frantically to keep her feet under her. The noise alerts this humanoid - barely, as it seems his attention is drawn towards the glade- and it snaps up a shortbow with arrow drawn, wide-eyed at Raylyn.

A quick dash into brush saves Raylyn from that first instinctive shot. Oddly, the humanoid only glances about furtively, finding Raylyn among the flora, and seems to draw a deep breath, lowering it's bow. It throws a few glances her way from time to time, but seems to divert most of it's attention back to the glade.

Out of the corner of her eye, Raylyn catches movement in the glade beyond, and sees what has captured the bowmen's attention. On the far side of the wide glade is a large tree with a cave-like opening in it. In front of the entrance is a small group of diminuitive, furry ape-ish looking creatures, brandishing crude weapons. And surrounding them is a half-circle of familiar figures: a howling pack of wolves (including large, odd-shaped ones as her party fought last night), being led by two more bestial humanoids just like the bowman near her. It is clear now that the howling and sounds of violence were coming from here. The wolf-pack has been savaging the smaller humanoids, while two of the wolves are currently tangled in nets and at least one of the bestial humanoids has a small spear sticking out of it.

Whether fortunately or not, the rest of the party seems to be unaware of this chance encounter, as it is beyond their vision.

Naomi- Very silently, you do not see or hear much ;)

Erin- You are about 40 feet from the position of the sentry humanoid you found. The clearing you see is probably 200-ish feet across, with the cave-tree aproximately 120 feet from your current position. You see 7 wolves, 2 of which look big and nasty, and two more of the bestial humanoids. Surrounded by that group, you see small, fur-covered, primitive looking humanoids. One wields a small spear and net, while two others - female by the looks of it- hold small handaxes.

Taking cover after her close encounter with the humanoid, Raylyn breathed slow and steady stalking her prey from the depths of the forest. Her form laying down on the cool, moist forest floor to avoid anymore sightings. She watched the different creatures and their movements around the glade before noticing a tree with an entrance, and what looked like a massive fight. Ape-ish looking creatures were holding their position in the entrance of the tree while everything else was surrounding them. She wanted to just rush in and take them all on not really caring what side who was on, but logic was winning the war in her head as she double counted everything in the glade, she was severely outnumbered. Ape looking creatures holding weapons, wolves and their mutant brothers all with sharp teeth plus now these ugly not quite human, not quite beast things also with weapons. The same weapons that had been pointed at her.

I could just roar and have the group and the creatures all come to me. Have a big all out brawl right here. Her inner voice laughed a bit before dismissing the idea. She loved a good fight but the plan wasn’t smart or practical. Considering the rest of her options she decided going back to figure out an actual battle plan would be the best idea. As quietly as she could she backed away from the clearing memorizing the positions of the creatures before taking off at a run back to the group.

We found them. She told the group in a quiet voice as she leapt out of the forest, shifting to human form. 9 wolves all together, but they aren't alone. There are 3 weird not quite human, not quite animal creatures and 3 monkey looking things. All of which are armed and appear to be fighting each other. They all seem mighty interested in a doorway located in a tree, which I am going to guess is our target destination.

She looked around at the group cooking up a plan in her head. With our numbers so low compared to them I think we need to take some ranged shots at the wolves and beast men, gauge their willingness to fight the others. If they break off we can bottleneck in sorts down the path here and have the bloody fight we have been hunting for. She glanced between their faces to try and gauge their response to her plan.

I agree that the we need to tread lightly, Raylan. Rik let go of each word carefully, remaining calm and deliberate and not letting the chaos of the fight sweep him away just yet. I say the four of us spread out and walk abreast until we're nearly to the clearing. Once we can all see what's going on at the treehouse, we'll spit our rank, look for any sentries and make short work of them. Once in place, we will attack from either side of the fray. Rik's heart beat like a drum and he couldn't help but smile. It felt as if the heat from the depths of the earth was crawling into his feet, up the length of his body, and out of his head. Still searching the darkness with his senses, he continued, Volosix, tales tell of the power of the dragon. I have seen your power with my own eyes. Do you have any magical means to reach out and find me discretely?

Once the perimeter was secure, the group could attack. If she could signal with a sound or something inconspicuous so I knew that they were well, then my arrow could signal the charge. Massacre the wolves. Heed the monkeys. Flawless. Rik knew no plan went off without a hitch. But hitches were his speciality and that was when he'd let the chaos of the fight overcome him.

He looked expectantly at the dragon-kin.

Happy that the group seemed to be finally sowing back together its loose threads, Valosix grinned. "Indeed I do manling. I just need a rough direction of where you will be and any messages I need to send will reach you" She looked Rik in the eye and raised a brow, a slight challenging look to see if he would doubt her skills. After a moment or so, and not getting a retaliation she gave a slight nod and looked to the others.

"As much as I just love these feet, my natural instincts" Valosix tilted her head to one side as she moved her draconic wings back and forth "Tell me to get up high. Once we have gotten close enough I believe I will be taking the high road" She looked up to the canopy of trees above with a smile. She always did like to watch and wait until the prime moment she could swoop down and startle her prey. "We need the advantage and confusion works in our favor if there are as many as we anticipate" Pulling her short bow and an arrow out of her satchel she held them ready and began to walk forward. "Let's get to it then"

We must act fast!

Grays head was filled with the outcomes of what could be the climax and finally of what was about to ensue.

I must save the apes from these pests. But he group was right.... A frontal assault wouldn't work. We must get the jump on our unexpecting guests. The leader should fall first. That should scatter and demoralize these beasts.

Gray moved with the group to prepare for an ambush.

Raylyn eyed Rik after hearing his suggestion and sighed slightly. She may be impulsive and like fighting a wee bit too much but she knew better than to stroll into the clearing so that they were served up as dinner. Valosix has the better idea of surprise, her from the sky and me from the forest. If you and Gray stand a better chance rushing in, be my guest. She moved her arms in a circle forward waving them on before shifting back to her cat form.

Watching Valosix walk towards the glade Raylyn jumped back into the thick of the forest that surrounded them. Next time, fight first, inform later. She thought to herself taking the same path as before, carefully avoiding the slope she had slipped on the first time. Hopping up on logs to avoid any noise of foot falls from her paws. The one who fired at me will be first. She mused to herself settling down into the plant life once again surveying the area. As soon as he is distracted, he will realize the mistake of missing. Her inner voice purred, licking her lips and waiting for the tell tale signs of the group charging into this already massive fight. Her claws dug into the earth under her paws, anticipation keeping her body at the ready for anything.

I expect no less, dragonkin. On your word, when Gray and I are ready I will loose an arrow into the fray. We will rush in then and flank from either side of the fight - crushing the enemy between us. If you and Raylan find any opposition along the perimeter, dispatch it quietly. A swift mind ends fights just as quickly as a swift blade.

Gray, to me. Valosix, we shall see you on the other side.

Palming the nose of Whiskey firmly, Rik turned to line off of Gray and began walking towards the clearing.

The map below shows the positions of all the NPC's you see as the team approaches the battlefield. G3 is the sentry with the bow, hanging back a little in the forest line. While distracted by the battle, he's very edgy from his run in with the mountain lion (Raylyn), so any noise alerts him to your approach (he rolled really high on listen check). If you move to within 60 ft of him, you'll need to be a DC 21 Move Silently check to avoid detection.

Other than that, you can approach the treeline of the glade wherever you please as shown on the map. Roll initiative if you join the combat, then just immediately post what your character does and I'll fit everything into a summary post when everyone has posted. Unless caught by the sentry, your first action will count as a surprise round in combat, so all enemies are considered flat-footed for your first round in combat.

Whether you join combat or not, please tell me in OOC spoiler where on the map your character is (ie, 12th square from left, down 10 squares would be a legitimate coordinate), and any actions you ready or skill checks.

Even with combat looming on the horizon Raylyn kept her breathing controlled and her body as still as possible Her mind filtering through possible tactics against this horde of fighting creatures. She knew her group would be causing a scene any minute now giving her just the distraction to take at least one of the beast men down, but the others would see us instantly in this clearing. Having more patience might gain them more information about the fighting groups and the tree with the door but she had already taken more time then she wanted looking for the rogue wolves. A blade of grass tickling her nose brought her back out of her own head and the reality of the danger ahead. That’s it. She thought noticing most of the creatures had melee ranged weapons or teeth, except for a couple bows. Either they will come to us or maybe I can control us going to them.

She backed away from her hiding spot once again as quietly as she could moving around to a better viewing spot and away from the sentries eyesight. With ease she shifted to human form and she knelled down on one knee closing her eyes. She prayed to the moon goddesses for a split second to give her strength, wisdom, and the magic she needed to carry on with her plan. Opening her eyes she placed both of her hands palm down on the forest floor, grasses and other plants shooting up between her fingers. Eyes closed once again she whispered the words that formed in her head, feeling the power of the moon and earth working with her. Once completed a green aura moved from Raylyn into the ground she touched, the plants under her hands twitching slightly with life as she held the spell in place. Eyes open she focused on where the spell would go and released it towards the big group of creatures, any plant life around each of the creatures them into place.

A storm of erupting roots and weeds explodes over the combat in front of the tree; shrieks and howls of surprise echo over the glade, turning into growls of frustration from the wolves, and grim, chittering laughter from their smaller, more agile opponents.

The larger male ape-thing darts forward, taking advantage of the situation to stab at his enemies. He moves like a creature at home in deep undergrowth, able to nimbly avoid the grasping roots, even knocking his opponents in the weavinv vines.

One of the females -who has avoided the roots as well - swings her arms wildly, barking in a strange lanuage, and seems to draw a verdant brown energy into her hands. The power holds for only a moment before it corruscates over onto the male ape-like creature, enfusing him with it's glow.

Shock plays across the face of the sentry as he watches the big cat turn into a humanoid, then summon devastating magic against his allies. Somehow he recovers his wits quickly and snaps his bow back into place and takes aim at Raylyn.

All the ape-ish humanoids made their reflex saves, so they can move freely but at half-speed. Only G1, W2, and W4 made their saves, so the rest are immobilized by the roots.

Erin- Raylyn is just ahead of the sentry initiative, so you may act before he finishes his shot.

Everyone else- You may all still take actions as you wish until you join combat. At the moment Raylyn is the only one in initiative order

A smile plays across the Druids face as her spell takes effect across the multiple creatures in the glade. Even though some were able to avoid the plants grabbing at them most were held in place. She watched the ape like creatures take advantage of the binding and gain the upper hand in the fight. Enemy of my enemy is my friend maybe? She thought to herself just as she heard the creak of a bow being drawn. Her glance veered only slightly away from the chaos to the sentry who had obviously spotted her, arrow being targeted right at here.

Son of a.. She didn't finish her thought as she instinctively shifted back to cat form, creating a smaller and more camouflaged target to hit. Her dark coat could really blend into the forest area well if she stood still or moved just right. Primal forces bubbled up in her subconscious as she readied herself for a fight, her form actually shifting to something slightly different than normal. The rage she had been feeling bubbling into something more animistic as her k9 teeth elongated and curving outward to look more like serrated tusks and her coat growing more shaggy and rough in appearance. Her heritage as a Shifter manifesting through her druid cat appearance in a way that made her look more wild than ever.

Within seconds she was rushing the sentry with the bow aimed her way, a blood thirsty growl echoing from her throat as she easily crossed the terrain between them. With a leap she was in the air, teeth pointed straight for the beast mans chest hoping to stab and knock him down all in one quick motion.

Everything was moving quickly, too quickly she thought to herself. Watching Rik and Gray about to head off to the other side of the clearing Valosix thought it time she got up higher Out of sight, out of harm for now She just hoped she was right. However in the middle of her jump Valosix realized that Raylyn and shifted back to human form and seemed to be praying. Stumbling a little in confusion, she barely made it to the branch, but hung on tight. Before she could try to ask Raylyn what she was doing Valosix heard a commotion from the battle field. Turning quickly to see what it was, all she saw were roots erupting from the earth below, taking a hold of some of the creatures whilst the Ape-things easily side-stepped them away and cheered with their luck.

"What the hell did she just do?" it was meant to be a thought but the words escaped her mouth before she knew what had just happened. Well there goes our surprise attack theory she thought as she looked back to where Raylyn had moved. But now the shifter had changed form yet again, to a creature not quite the average mountain cat. Her heckles were raised and with another glance Valosix saw why. The lone sentry that she had originally thought to take out first was apparently quicker to act this time. unable to react in time herself Valosix thought it wise to alert the others, just encase they hadn't seen what had just happened. Time for that silent message, although theres no point in being quiet now

The hair stood upright on the back of Rik's neck. Having the dragonkin in his head so soon was unexpected and unsettling. Her news was even more disconserting but there would be time enough to question all of that.

Five steps was all it took for the chaos to insue. He would not let it take him - not yet.

The trap is sprung. We must move, friend. he lay the words down gently beside the monk before running off.

Rik raced south through the woodline and out into the eastern edge of the clearing. The canopy opened up and the sun that still sat high in the afternoon sky beat down. There was no hiding, but while the fight still ensued, Rik got as close as he dared. He dropped to a knee, drew three arrows and buried them in the soft earth before loosing (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17907239&postcount=103) the one that was already knotched at the upright figure closest to him.

While he reached for his next arrow he saw a blur in the corner of his eye speed past, about half the size of a man. Battle is joined by the first elements of the party, but blood and chaos reign as the two sides embroiled near the tree renew combat with heightened ferocity, despite the rampant overgrowth from Raylyn's spell.

Near the cave-tree, the male defender goes into a frenzy, fortified by magic and seeing his opponents caught in the undergrowth. It barks with mad laughter as it nimbly steps between two enemies and pierces both with it's broad-bladed shortspear.

The wolves howl with madness back at it, but their snapping jaws find only empty air. One of the hulking hybrid wolves joins the fight, however, and it manages to gash a wound in the side of the whirling ape-creature.

This only forces the fight to grow fiercer. Clawed by one of the few wolves unrestrained by the entanglement, one of the females darts away and comes upon the hybrid wolf's flank, sinking her vicious teeth into it's hide. This costs her, however, as she in turn is flanked and raked by enemy teeth.

Raylyn's ferocious transformation causes her opponent to panic, giving her the time to reach his throat before his shaking arms can put his bow on target. Bloody flesh spills over her midnight coat as Raylyn gores her target; the sentry can't even scream as it's life runs off at the feet of this true predator.

In the distant fight, all combatants feel a sense of foreboading as the treeline erupts with the roar of a massive hunter that has slaked it's thirst on the blood of her prey.

On to the glade strides the first of the party to appear. Rik drops to a knee, pulls his bowstring taught, and releases with the confidence of a trained archer. His confidence is paid in full as one of the enemy humanoids turns at the last moment, bringing it's own arrow to bear on the tall huntsman. Rik's shaft drives straight through the creature's throat, as if anticipating the motion.

Even before the corpse can hit the ground, Rik has loosed another arrow from the ground at his knees, ready to rain justice upon his remaining foes.

Justice, it seems, is a fickle mistress, and she forces a new target upon him in an instant. Seeing his ally fall to such a deadly shot, the second bestial humanoid draws it's bow and fires, hoping to bring the human down. The shot hits Rik in the thigh, drawing blood, but his armor absorbes the worst of it.

Alarmed at the durability of his foe, the enemy humanoid quickly unlimbers a horn from the strap at it's side and blows mightily. A clear, deep sound resonates outward and begins to echo through the forest.

Struggle and vain effort compose the actions of the remaining wolves. Roots and grasses seemingly made of iron arrest their every movement, and howl as they might, no freedom awaits them. One of the larger hybrid wolves seems for a second that it might break free; it's massive shoulders and dark heart seem to win through, snapping the undergrowth and buying it's salvation. At the last second, however, a root like a whip of nature's wrath snaps about the wolf's neck and drags it back to the earth.

First round has been completed. Whew! That's a lot of actions (for me, at least). Map will be updated shortly, but player positions should be right already.

Gray and Valosix are still out of combat, so you two may act freely whenever. If you join combat at this point, your "surprise" round will simply be putting you at the top of initiative order.

Derrick- Is there anything specific you were making the spot check for? If it's just a general look-about, then you pretty much see a battle. You notice the cave-tree is odd in that it isn't really in a forest, as much as a tree that grew up in a rocky glade. Also you can see the comotion that Raylyn made in her charge, so you know where she's at.

F1 avoids Entangle, uses Whirling Frenzy to hit B1for 8 dmg, W3 for 10 dmg.

F2 avoids Entangle, casts a spell on F1 (Spellcraft check to identify)

W3 is Entangled, misses attack against F1

W2 avoids Entangle, took 5' step to C24, bites F3 for 4 dmg (failed to confirm crit)

Raylyn charged and kill G3

Rik shot and killed G2

F3 avoids Entangle, tumbled to avoid AoO, moving to E24, flanked B1 and bit B1 for 4 dmg

W4 avoids Entangle, moved to E23, flanked F3, and bit F3 for 6 dmg

G1 is Entangled, shot and hit Rik for 3 dmg, dropped bow and blew horn

B2, W1, and W5 fail to break free of Entangle

Valosix glides to B16, casts Shocking Spark at G1 and kills G1

Just as the message was sent to Rik, Valosix eyes were glued to the scene where Raylyn had just destroyed the lone sentry that had attempted to attack her. Holy crap, the kittens got fangs her eyes wide in astonishment, she shook her head and realized she had not yet been spotted thanks to the creatures quick downfall. Well then, lets get closer so I can be of some use she decided. Stretching her wings Valosix leaps from the tree she was currently hiding in to the one closest. She took a few steps over the branches and peeked out to see if this would be sufficient. One more over just encase and with that Valosix glides once more to be not too far from the battle.

Her heart once again pounding in excitement she breathed in deeply though her nostrils. Blood and panic. Oh how I've missed this! Valosix crouches down and crawls along the branches to get a closer look through the foliage whilst trying not to be spotted but just as she can get a glimpse of the battle field again, the noise of a horn makes her stop in her tracks. "Not on my watch you don't" she said under her breath as she held out her palm towards the sentry. With a whisper of words, lightning (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17912953&postcount=113) shot out of her hand, aiming at the man with the battle horn, in an attempt to silence it.

Because I was out of combat I glided over the trees to my final position of B16

As Raylyn hits her target riding the momentum to the ground, her fangs dig deep into her victims heart leaving nothing but a bloody corpse by the time they hit solid earth. Pushing with her front paws she pulled her fangs out of the mangled body with a suction noise loud enough to make even her wince a bit. That was far too easy. She thought to herself shaking the blood from her long teeth and glancing to the rest of the scene. A scene filled with creatures fighting creatures and arrows being flung, then a horn being blown. Her glanced focused on that sound before a strange feeling filled the air and lightning flung at the beast like man. That same glance followed the lightning back to its owner. The primal natures continued to flow through her as she roared in victory to Valosix before turning her attention back to the rest of the creatures caught up by the roots.

With all her strength she began running towards her next target, claws digging into the ground below, blood lust at the forethought of her brain before sliding to a stop just before the twitching plants in front of her. It had been beat into her head that the roots would attack her too. Well that may have not been my brightest idea. She concluded to herself as she paced back and forth in front of the plant life. Taking everything she had to stay under control.

Her violence filled head was having difficulty figuring out what to do next now that she couldn't get to her victims without being trapped herself. In an instant she was shifting back to human form with another plan hatching in her head. Even her human form looked much more animal like, teeth still elongated and skin coated with long shaggy fur. She took both hands and touched the middle of her sternum with just her fingertips and bowed her head, whispered words not heard by anyone else echoing in her ears as she suddenly looked up with the soft cry of an eagle resonating into the forest glade. She almost looked peaceful before her head tilted back up and smirk played across her face. Out of nowhere an eagle was in the sky circling over head until it dove to it's intended target. The bird not being affect by the plants had no problem flying through the area her spell effected aiming it's talons right towards the intended target.

Raylyn moves to P20 and the eagle is summoned (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17913674&postcount=115) at L23 on turn attacking W1

The resounding horn echoed in Rik's ears as he watched the dragon fell the menace. Rik scanned the battle for his halfling friend, but to no avail.

Hopefully the noise doesn't draw more unwelcomed fiends.

He saw how the ground tore at creatures before the tree. The devil's are snarred, Rik thought Now they shall feel the torment of wild justice.

Bounding to his feet, Rik trots to a better vantage point of the fray.

P25

Using the bow in hand, arrow knotched, he picks out the biggest of the wolves he can see.

B2

Rik watched the beast intently as it nipped at the roots and moving earth below it, howling and snarling as they held it in place. He began to concentrate (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17915352&postcount=118), first at the tip of the arrow. A firm iron that would sing true when loosed. He could feel the strength of the iron in the wood shaft that it was attached to sitting like a falcon, perched on the bowstring that begged to be snapped from his finger tips. His arm was steady, thick chorded muscles pulled taught. Hand to face. Breathing slow. The blood pounded through his body like a drum, thum-thum, thum-thum, thum-thum. From the fingers, holding the line, to his heart, where it all began, and back again.

Then all at once he saw the space between him and his mark explode - from the iron of the arrow, begging to be freed from Rik's own heart-string, to the black heart of the snarred wolf-beast. The air itself burst - snapping and hissing, like a mad cackle of wild retribution. An unseeable beast literally foaming at the mouth begging to sink it's bite into something.

Rik's hand broke free with ease as he exhaled and the arrow danced through the burning air and lead the wild force to it's mark (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17915441&postcount=119).

The howls have died in the glade. In their place desparation and panic has wormed it's way into the aggressors. Jaws snap over flesh; fur and muscle rip against implacable root and vine; and the judgement of hunters bears down upon the vicious combatants of the glade.

In the rear of the fight, the wolves bound by the sinews of nature itself are beginning to panic. They have seen their masters cut down around them, and the approaching hunters wield terrifying powers. Yet struggle as they might, the beasts cannot escape the hold of the roots.

At the base of the tree the fight has become bloody for both sides. Like a hurricane of violence the male ape-creature slices his spear into the bound wolf in front of him. The spears punctures the wolf's neck and it collapses, jerking with bubbly breath against the ground.

Nearby, the caster female raises her arma again and the same earthen power now encompasses the other female warrior. Embraced by this magic, the female warrior ignores the clearly mortal attacks of the wolves behind her and digs her fangs again into the great beast in front of her.

Committing in force, elemental energy erupts from the party, ripping into the rear elements of the wolf pack. Corruscating lightning sizzles down the battlefield from the far treeline, moments after a caustic shaft explodes with hissing force against one of the bound beasts.

The battle is far from over, but fate, it seems, is favoring the vicious in this conflict.

F1 uses Whirling Frenzy to hit W3 for 9 dmg, killing it.

F2 casts a spell on F3 (Spellcraft check to identify)

W2 took 5' step to D24, bites F3 for 3 dmg

Rik channeled an Elemental Burst through his arrow and struck B2 for 14 physical and acid damage

F3 full attacked B1 for 6 dmg

B1 bit F1 for 6 dmg, attempted trip, F1 resisted

W4 bit F3 for 4 dmg

B2, W1, and W5 fail to break free of Entangle

With arrows and lightning flying in at the remaining wolves things were turning out much better than Raylyn could have predicted. Dead remains were starting to litter the glade as the group marched in on the already violent battle. Raylyns head began to clear only slightly as she watched the fight from outside the mass of plant life gripping everything else, her glance focusing in on the tree. Wonder what is behind the door. She wondered quietly before shifting back to her primal cat form.

She paced back and forth turning her attention back to the writhing plant mass and growled under her breath. This time no plan forming in her head on how to get to the tree to tear apart the rest of the creatures and get out of here. Brilliant plan Raylyn, keep yourself out of the fight. She criticized herself, realizing one day she may have to learn to think before doing. Maybe. With a huff she walked down the line of plant life, hoping her spell had partially failed and left a chunk of earth for her to use and participate in the battle. She was still quite bloodthirsty and not ready for the fight to be over. A screech of an eagle echoed through the glade as it focused in on its intended target.

Eagle moves to J24 and attacks W1. Raylyn shifts to cat form, gorebrute still active and moves to P27. No action taken

The beast's powers are frightening, Rik thinks as he paces just out of reach of the roots and ivy and earth that lash out indiscriminently trying to catch anything in it's grip. Perhaps she did something to the fighter while he was at my back, he half-wonders.

Whistling loudly for his horse, he finds as good a spot as any out of reach of the struggling earth. Rik pulls his bowstring back again and focuses his shot. Another arrow loosed (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17942917&postcount=123) dances with fury and sings a song of burning justice as it flies towards the monster once more.

"My mind is iron. My fists are fire. My strength is justice. My..." Gray repeats his mantra in his mind as he charges forward, following Rik into battle. It's chaos in the glade, but the stalwart halfing watches as Rik fires upon the wolves and he sees his target.

Power fills the halfling's veins and he hurtles towards the giant wolf struggling against some type of rabid vegetation. Broad is his grin as he nears to within reach of the beast. Draconic vengeance lights his arms on fire; the end is indeed nigh for his foe.

Until a pit of deep earth swallows the halflings next step; the manical roots had hollowed out a shallow ditch nearby, and with glee snapped out to haul the confused warrior into the bossom of the earth.

"My steps are...not long enough" is the brave halfling's last thoughts before succombing to the dark, cold soil of his newly wrought grave.

A cruel end for Gray, but nature is heartless, alas. You are now a party of three. Watch your backs!

As her lightning stuck her target to the ground, a smile spread across the dragonkin's face. No more blowing his own horn for that one she commented to herself as her excitement grew within the battle at hand.

Valosix heard Rik's whistle and looked around for him out in the glade. Not being able to get a good view from her current position Valosix jumps (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17958158&postcount=124) over to the nearest tree. She could now spot Rik loosing his arrows at the enemies below, as Gray jumps out form behind him and into the battle. Gray wai.. were the only words able to escape her before the ground around him seemingly swallowed him whole. Dumbfounded in shock at what had just happened, Valosix shakes her head in wonder That couldn't have just happened she told herself as the battle sounds around her quickly brought her out of her reverie. No time for that now, lets get this done and ask questions later.

once again looking upon the scene below Valosix whispers a spell this time to this time release an orb of electricity (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=17958228&postcount=125) at her next victim.

*End of Combar

The feral ape-warrior draws it's handaxe from the throat of the fallen wolf and now faces the huge alpha alone. The two foes both howl in bloodlust as they close in one last battle to the death. Despite it's size, the alpha beast is no match for the relentless weapons of the ape-warrior. A handful of seconds later the beast has fallen, the ape-warrior's axes buried in it's skull.

This single fight seems to change the tenor of the battle. It is as if the wolves have lost their courage; odd for beasts. Desperately they wrestle against the undergrowth, but this time it is to claw away from their previous prey, instead of towards them. The last beast-wolf falls to Rik's baleful assault and this breaks the wolves completely. They turn and run if at all able, making for the nearest edge of the glade away from foes.

Combat complete! The XP award for the encounter is 739 XP.

The wolves are routed and no longer a measurable threat. You may roleplay hunting them down and killing them or letting them run off, as you like. Either way you get full XP for victory in the encounter.

The ape-things are very aware of your presence, but do not appear hostile. They have climbed the cave-tree to avoid anymore Entanglement while the spell dies out. If you choose to attack them, you must roll initiative again, with no surprise round.

As the primal nature of Raylyns shifter heritage settled from being left out of the fight she was able to observe the many things that happened. Lightning stopped the creature from blowing his horn and an arrow flew true to its intended target. These two did seem to be very good at what they did in battle. She thought as a yell came from the woods and the halfling decided to join the fight. Its about damn time. Raylyn thought as her glanced turned to where the sound came from.

Her sight reached the spot just as Gray disappeared under the ground, not a scream or struggle to be heard. Raylyn blinked once staring at where the halfling once stood. She had wished death upon Gray but she didn't actually mean it, he just got on her last nerve. Gods below what an idiot. She mumbled to herself looking back to the last of the fight. The ape like creatures had finished off the last of the mutant wolves and retreated up the tree away from her spell. The rest of the wolves were either running with their tails between their legs or stuck in her spell. Deciding the wolves not to be a threat she ignored them, they could live to see another day. She did have some compassion for animals being she could become one.

The ape like things however still gave her the creeps and she growled in their general direction. She would wait however, really she should be done with the obligation of tracking things down in these woods. If the Crusade was here they would have heard all the noise and be tracking them, it was getting to the point of moving on. She stayed in cat form, but stayed defensive, listening and watching the ape like creatures that had yet to attack them. She would let Valosixx or Rik make the decision to talk and figure things out or to walk away, it was their mission. They already knew her vote would be to leave.

The screech of an eagle could be heard over head before a brief pop and a bit of smoke could be seen in a comical fashion. The magic of the bird being returned to the ether where it would wait until once again wielded.

The wolves were retreating, the battle was won. Valosix sighed in relief as she closed her eyes and said a quick thank you to the Gods for watching over them in this battle and for Gray to be at peace at last.

Jumping down from the branches Valosix walked over to stand next to Raylyn who was watching the backsides of the wolves cower away through the forest. Her eyes followed her companions to the nearby tree where the ape-like creatures had clambered too. "I think we should try to talk to these creatures" stated Valosix. "After all they did not attack us during the fray and evidently helped to win the battle against the wolves. They may yet be an ally" Valosix turned to Raylyn to look for a reaction "What say you my friend?"

The smell of blood tainted the forest air making Raylyn even more paranoid. The sound of battle and the stench of the dead was very likely to bring unwanted attention their way. She wanted nothing more than to be on their way but as Valosix joined her on the ground her suspicions were realized. They would want to talk, if possible, to these ape things.

Goddess help us. She thought to herself before shifting back to her human form, rubbing her face to get the tingles out of her skin from the shift. We both know I will say something to get us into trouble with these beasts, be better if it came from you if we do indeed communicate. She said quietly to Valosix keeping her eyes glued to the ape things. Yes they did help but that didn't make them friendly. Just be quick about it, who knows what heard us fighting and that entangle spell won’t hold those things in the tree for much longer. She warned Valosix, keeping her senses open to the forest around them.
